If Memory Serves (Mandela Effect, Folk Trust, & AI)
We split the party! While Perry is searching for answers to all the inexplicable weird things happening lately, Mason is searching for Digby. Meanwhile, Digby is out to find his place in the world as an artificially-intelligent raccoon - and he just so happens to catch a ride with Andrew Peck. Perry finds something strange in a pre-recorded interview with Andrea Kitta, and as the crew goes their separate ways... it seems that everything is converging on a single familiar location.
In This Episode:
Andrew Peck does a phenomenal job voice-acting, after Mason wrote him a ton of lines.
Andrea Kitta covers a ton of ground very quickly, as we talk about several facets of folklore in the modern age.
The deferral of fact-checking, and the implicit trust within folk groups.
The impact of AI tools on disinformation, as well as 'information' more broadly.
The Mandela Effect, and how unreliable memory is.
Mark Norman makes an acting cameo.
Guests:
Andrea Kitta: A folklorist with a specialty in medicine, belief, and the supernatural. She is also interested in Internet folklore, narrative, and contemporary (urban) legend. Her current research includes: vaccines, pandemic illness, contagion and contamination, virality, stigmatized diseases, disability, health information on the Internet, and Slender Man. She is a fellow of the American Folklore Society.
Andrew Peck: A folklorist, media scholar, and ethnographer whose research focuses on how digital media offers new possibilities for persuasion and everyday communication. His current research focuses on how online communities circulate and contest knowledge using memes; and how hoaxes, rumors, and urban legends develop and circulate across networks.
Featuring voice acting from:
Brooke Jennett of THIRTEEN as Digby
Mark Norman of The Folklore Podcast as Mark Norman

The concept of "Digital Folklore" is a fascinating exploration of how traditional folklore, which encompasses myths, legends, and customs passed down through generations, has adapted and evolved in the digital age. This podcast delves into the ways in which modern technology and online communities have become the new fertile ground for the creation and dissemination of folklore. http://www.travelful.net/location/5254563/usa/branded-paper-placemats In this digital era, folklore has shifted from being predominantly oral and written to now encompassing memes, viral videos, internet urban legends, and even online rituals. These digital narratives often draw from ancient folklore, urban legends, and mythology, reflecting the human need for storytelling and the persistence of these timeless themes. Moreover, they shed light on our society's collective consciousness and anxieties. https://www.a-zbusinessfinder.com/business-directory/Branded-Paper-Placemats-Floral-Park-New-York-USA/33912761/
Excellent episode guys! As a Tumblr user I can attest to what you said about the beloved Hellsite. The frame grows ever more intriguing especially now that you're in the second season. I enjoyed the frame in the first season because it kinda felt like a GM establishing the campaign setting with broad strokes. As a GM I mean this in the best possible way. I'm waiting eagerly to see how your character selves and the story interact with with this eerie mysterious setting you've made.
excellent job guys
Another fact about the devils chair is that you're supposed to leave a beer as an offering. It's said that at midnight, the devil comes and drinks the beers, and the next day, the beer can/bottle will be sitting there empty. I will say that the rumors are true that they are normally empty the next day. Cassidaga is right on way back from the beach for a lot of people in Central Florida, and what's better to end a day at the beach with then a free beer? Sometimes, I wonder if the folk tale was created by someone in the area who wanted some beer but was broke. Whoever created this story, I have to thank them for all the free beer I've drank on Cassidaga!
This episode was very emotional for me. I was unaware of the Momo story, but I did know a beautiful trans woman who called herself Momo. Having heard this story now, I can only imagine how much dysphoria and alienation she must have been feeling. A few years ago, she took her own life. It makes me wish I had reached out more to her, but I had a bit of a crush on her, so I was shy. She was so beautiful. Her loss still makes me sad. Anyway, great show. I'm really enjoying the philosophical elements.
