What is BOINC
The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is an open-source grid computing infrastructure which provides open access to a global volunteer-based distributed computing network. To date, BOINC has been the driving force behind numerous computationally intensive research programs, such as pulsar identification, the creation of patient specific cancer treatments, the simulation of candidate molecules for next-generation solar panels, along with many others. While BOINC has been used primarily for science and mathematics, it can host data from any open or commercial field so long as the data can be formatted for BOINC’s processes. Examples of projects include tasks on engineering, cryptography, rendering, weather and climate prediction, as well as social, market, and resource analytics. Enigma@home, for example, worked to break remaining WWII messages encrypted by an Enigma machine.

In this episode we answer the questions:
What would happen if everyone could choose from a market of societal incentive structures and economic systems?
What would happen if economic systems were built and managed via an open-source organizational model?
What would happen if the value of economic variables were rules-based?
What would happen if the transition out of a failing or unpopular economic system was not only possible, but seamless?
What would happen if anyone could start their own economic system at any time with a few lines of code?

What does GPUGRID do?
GPUGRID is a project that runs molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for scientists in the fields of cancer, HIV/AIDS, neurological disorders and general scientific and lab simulations.
GPUGRID does things a little similar to Rosetta@home but where Rosetta focuses on mainly folding and proteins, GPUGRID does all sorts of things from docking, to folding to just "what happens if this happens" types of experiments with not only proteins but also smaller molecules. To learn more about how proteins work, check out my other Project Brief on Rosetta.
What is MD?
Molecular dynamics is the physics of molecules and atoms and how they interact at the tiny scales where they live. The animation above is a little bit fast but it shows how one big molecule interacts in a sea of smaller water or gas molecules.
It is a little hectic, and that's how it is in reality (just we can't really see it). All that jiggling around is what we call heat, the hotter it is, the more it jiggles and the more chance it has to separate a material (for example, turning water into steam).
This jiggling is important to incorporate into simulations like folding or docking, because that way, the possible drug or cure that is being tested is in the most realistic situation it can be.
Why GPUs and not CPUs?
For those of you that don't know, CPUs are what makes your computer run, it does the maths, it manages your memory and files and all the general stuff. CPUs usually only need a couple of hands (cores) to do a bunch of complex things because usually you will only be doing a couple things at a time on the computer.
The GPU is usually an extra card or component within the computer that puts stuff on the screen. Now the key thing about this is that to put stuff on the screen, you can have lots and lots of little hands (cores) doing very simple things to bring one big thing together in the end (ie, the picture on the screen)
This fact is why GPUGRID only uses GPUs, because they are really really good at lots and lots of really small calculations. Much like lots and lots of molecules all bouncing around.

This week we discuss ilikechocolate's outline for a new magnitude definition and distribution mechanism.
In this episode we really only introduce the questions that need to be answered in order to move forward:
What are the problems with the current magnitude system?
How does this idea address those problems?
What are the benefits to this idea?
What are the problems with this idea?
Who would benefit from the implementation of this idea?
Who would lose out from the implementation of this idea?
Is this idea secure?
What are the philosophical implications of this proposal?
We discuss only a few of these questions, but are certain to return to this discussion in the near future to fully address all of them.

We are all intrinsically aware of the power of data, yet we continue to give for free the data that defines our personal existence and hold for sale the data that could change humanity and the world.
This episode from September 26th looks forward to an economy in which the value created by individuals interacting with a digital world is recognized and dignified with monetary compensation.
We discuss how blockchain technology holds the potential to redefine the patent and copyright structures by simultaneously freeing data and knowledge, opening them to the open-source future, while strengthening ownership rights and claims.

It mints and distributes cryptocurrency in relation to the processing power a network participant directs toward data-driven analysis and scientific discovery, as well as through a proof-of-stake reward mechanism. The Gridcoin blockchain monitors processing contributions to the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Networked Computing (BOINC). BOINC hosts major institutional computing projects such as IBM’s World Community Grid, SETI, and CERN, alongside projects developed by students, enthusiasts, mathematicians, researchers, and citizen scientists. Access to Gridcoin's computation resources is free, while computation contributors are incentivized with cryptocurrency minted by the Gridcoin protocol.

What are Amicable Numbers?
Amicable numbers is a BOINC project run by a small group of people who want to discover as many Amicable numbers as possible.
Now in order to understand Amicable numbers, we must first understand what a perfect number is...
A perfect number is a number where all of its factors (except for the number itself) adds to the number you have.
In the example above, 6 is a perfect number. It has factors:
6 (6x1)
3 (3x2)
2 (2x3)
1 (1x6)
So if we take the sum of these numbers except for 6 itself we get:3 + 2 + 1 = 6
Pretty cool right?
So this is where we come to Amicable numbers.
An Amicable number pair is a pair of numbers where each of the factors of each number (except the number itself) adds to the other number.
You can see this in the image above with the smallest Amicable number pair 220 and 284.
As far as research goes, there is no directly applicable problem that uses Amicable numbers however, it does present quite a novelty to crunchers who want to claim those numbers as their own (much like finding prime numbers with Primegrid).

Blockchains: Moving Beyond the Trust-Based Model
In this episode we discuss how blockchain technology presents an alternative to the trust-based model of not only finance, but any protocol, process, or organization that relies on arbiters of trust.
While the [electronic payments] system works well enough for most transactions, it still suffers from the inherent weaknesses of the trust based model.
What is needed is an electronic payment system based on cryptographic proof instead of trust, allowing any two willing parties to transact directly with each other without the need for a trusted third party.
- Satoshi Nakamoto
Trust is a complex natural protocol that enables social interaction between individuals. It largely depends on a biological function drawn from a tribal library. It is difficult to maintain a natural web of trust beyond 100-200 individual people. This creates logical problems including tribalism and prejudice.
To overcome these problems, human societies manufactured protocols and processes that manage trust across large webs of individuals. For thousands of years, technological limitations demanded these protocols and processes be managed by people -- by arbiters of trust. In solving the problems of the tribal model, this trust-based model creates a significant problem: arbiters of trust hold incredible power.
Cypherpunks, crypto-anarchists, and others claim that a digital future secured by cryptography is the solution to this ancient problem. The Bitcoin blockchain was the first successful implementation of their proposed solution.

Manual Reward Claims (MRC)
This week we discuss manual reward claims, a mechanism that seeks to develop a lever for the the Gridcoin economic system by giving crunchers the option to claim their earned research rewards (ERR) without staking.
Instead, the researcher would click a button and receive their ERR, minus a small fee, in the next staked block. The fee, as currently presented, would be split between the staker of the block and development funding.
This means that this lever utilizes fee-based economics to enable treasury funding!
Treasury funding is a critical aspect of blockchain economies -- how do you fund development of open-source software and open-source economies... and open-source science? -- and is being explored by more and more communities. Here again, it would seem, GRC is helping drive the crypto space forward.
You will hear an introduction to these concepts along with an introduction to some of the details and discussions going on.
Remember! MRC is in the very early stages of development. Now is the time to get involved if you have ideas on how it might function best. You don't need to code to participate in these discussions!

Project brief: LHC@Home
This week @delta1512 introduces us to the power-house of particle physics, LHC@Home.
Have you ever pondered if the protons and neutrons you learned about in high-school were actually made up of something even smaller? Well, they are, and there are a whole load of different "fundamental particles" that make up reality as we know it, and scientists dedicate themselves to discovering more of them and seeing how they work. This is where LHC@Home helps out.
To learn more, check out the project brief post linked above, or join us live tonight on The Gridcoin Fireside.
There is no Project brief next week, but we'll see Delta again in two weeks!
