The next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series is Chuck’s chat with French horn player Alan Robinson, the man whose extraordinary playing graces “God Only Knows.” It’s absolutely incredible what a photographic memory Alan possesses—listening to him speak, it’s as if you’re sitting there right beside him, watching Brian Wilson through the control room glass. This interview is an absolute must-hear for Pet Sounds fans.   At 21, Alan became the youngest contract member of the 20th Century Fox orchestra, where he played on films like The King & I, Carousel and The Sound Of Music. In the mid-1960s, he discovered that "being a busy session player was more lucrative than symphonic work,” which is how he came to be on Pet Sounds. The next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series is Part 1 of Chuck’s chat with Brian Wilson’s favorite drummer, legendary studio maestro Hal Blaine. It’s not hard to understand why Brian worked with him so often: Hal claimed to have participated in over 35,000 sessions and 6,000 singles. His drumming is featured on 150 US top 10 hits, 40 of which went to number one. Chuck’s interview with Hal took place while the latter was living in a retirement community, and the tone is definitely “no shits given” by this point. We kick off the Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series at the very beginning…it’s Chuck’s conversation with one of Brian Wilson’s most towering influences, Ross Barbour of The Four Freshmen!  His father Murry took Brian to see the legendary harmony group when he was 14, and he got the opportunity to meet them. The concert and that meeting had a profound effect on young Brian, who said, “My voice was shivering as I was talking to them…I was so in awe of them. It was one of the biggest moments in my life. [Their song] ‘It’s a Blue World’ made me cry. Recorded only two days before the great man’s passing, this audiobook-style episode is a Brian Wilson diary that covers the 27 sessions it took to accomplish one of his great works, a span of six months that kicks off at the moment in December 1965 when he first heard The Beatles’ Rubber Soul and vowed to make the greatest rock record of all time, to Pet Sounds’ release in May 1966.
