Discover Indie Film

Meet tomorrow's filmmakers today. Hosted by film festival programmer Jeff Howard, Discover Indie Film features interviews with filmmakers from the festival circuit who rise above the crowd. Find out what films inspire them, how they get their films made, and what they plan to do next.

470. 4Qs with Regina Pigsley

What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Tuesday's interview with Regina Pigsley was two years in the making and well worth the wait! Her film “The Phoenix” screened at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival and won Outstanding Director – Drama & Audience Award - Best Short Film – Drama and six months later brought her revamped college film “Matched” to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2023, taking home an Audience Award for Best Short Film - SciFi. Regina is an all around amazing person and you know that means you're going to want to tune in for her 4 Questions. 469. Regina Pigsley “The Phoenix” & Matched”

It's Tuesday, Indie Film Lovers, and you know that means a new podcast is out! This particular interview was two years in the making! How so? Regina Pigsley and I had set a time to record this, either in person or Zoom, so many times since her film “The Phoenix” screened at Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2022 (where she won Outstanding Director – Drama & Audience Award - Best Short Film – Drama) that we both thought that we were recording her second appearance on Discover Indie Film. But noooo... thorough research proves that Regina has not been on the podcast before! It might be because we had another great festival Q&A six months later when she brought her revamped college film “Matched” to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2023, taking home an Audience Award for Best Short Film - SciFi. But our shared false memory that Regina had done a Discover Indie Film podcast is no longer relevant because we DID record this podcast! Lucky you, because this is a wonderful conversation with an amazingly dedicated filmmaker and human. I add the “amazing human” part because Regina works for World Central Kitchen, utilizing her production skills to help get food to people in war zones. Amazing! What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Happy Thursday, Everyone! I'm writing this intro before Election Day so either you all know something I don't know yet or we're all still nervously waiting. Regardless, there's no better way to spend today than following up Camille Corbett's terrific interview posted Tuesday with her 4 Questions. Camille brought her comedy/horror short “The Island” to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2023 and took home a Programmer’s Prize – Exceptional Filmmaking. Camille is an impressively busy multi-hyphenate person ( Writer/Director/Actor/Producer/Comedian/Model) and I'm excited for you to hear about some of her inspirations here! 465. Camille Corbett “The Island”

A beautiful Tuesday to you all! I know the focus on everyone's mind today is the new podcast release from Discover Indie Film, right? We thought this insightful, engaging interview with the extremely talented Camille Corbett would be the perfect thing to put out on this Election Day to distract and remind everyone of the importance of art despite whatever outcome you're hoping for. Camille brought her comedy/horror short “The Island” to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2023 and took home a Programmer’s Prize – Exceptional Filmmaking. I’ll be honest... for the last year I was hoping she’d have time to record a podcast because Camille is an incredibly busy multi-hyphenate person! Writer/Director/Actor/Producer/Comedian/Model...heck, you can even add Podcaster to that list. But Camille had some time and came in person to sit down at the mics with me and we had an amazing talk. Camille has an incredible life story, filled with education, travel, and creativity. Enjoy! 464. Fr3deR1cK & Jeff Shoot the S**t, Part 7

This podcast is a special one.  For his seventh appearance on the Discover Indie Film podcast,  Fr3deR1cK Taylor does the introduction. This is only significant to me, the person who did the first 463 introductions, but since I get to type these show notes I get to make a big deal out of it.  Fr3deR1cK was out in L.A. again to shoot more brilliant documentary footage and with a certain election coming in a few days we took another opportunity to sit down at the mic's together. 463. 4Qs with Nick Roth

What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Happy Tuesday, My curious friends and welcome back! I'm hoping you enjoyed my chat with the remarkably talented Nick Roth last week and you are back to catch his 4Qs! Nick wrote and co-directed the feature comedy Hanky Panky, which took home the Grand Jury Awards for Best Feature Film – Comedy and Best Cast Performance – Feature Film at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024. This film is seriously funny and I URGE to go to your favorite place to buy/rent films and watch Hanky Panky as soon as possible. 462. Nick Roth “Hanky Panky”

Happy Thursday, Cinema Peeps! I'm thrilled that today you'll be learning about filmmaker Nick Roth. Nick wrote and co-directed the feature comedy Hanky Panky, which happened to take home the Grand Jury Awards for Best Feature Film – Comedy and Best Cast Performance – Feature Film at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024. When I first saw Hanky Panky, I had one thought. “The people who made this film are the BEST PEOPLE.” This ensemble comedy sincerely takes me back to the glory days of Monty Python and Kids In The Hall movies, where a group of smart, funny people do their best to create something that nobody has seen before. Therefore you should accept the challenge to go to your favorite place to buy/rent films and watch Hanky Panky. Nick is of the opinion that the film is perfectly fine, maybe even better, on the AVOD platforms that throw ads into the film at random moments. Personally, I think you should rent it on an ad free platform. Is that enough setup? I think so! Except that you can go to @hankypankymovie to get weblink and more! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter The INDIE Channel The INDIE Channel Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter – TikTok

460. Gerrit Van Woudenberg “Quantum Suicide”

Welcome back to our Discover Indie Film community. I'm very excited to share this interview with Gerrit Van Woudenberg! Gerrit  brought his feature film Quantum Suicide to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024 and took home two Grand Jury Awards; Best Feature Film – SciFi and Best Production Design – Feature Film. I rarely mention awards from other festivals, but Quantum Suicide also won Best Science Fiction Feature at the Philip K Dick Film Festival and that’s too cool to not mention. Made in the excellent tradition of SciFI Indies such as Pi and Primer, I can honestly say that in many ways Gerrit exceeded the standard set by those amazing SciFi pioneers. How? Well, you just have to watch the film and you can because it gets released the day after this podcast! To find out where you can see it, just go to https://quantumsuici.de/ but, personally, I hope that you find it on VOD and pay to see it without commercials. If you want to find the film on social media, use the handle @quantumthefilm APPY THURSDAY, FILM LOVERS! This week I chatted with Nathan Tape via Zoom from New Orleans. Nathan brought his feature film “Off Ramp” to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2023 and it is fair to say the film cleaned up the awards, taking home six! 451. Hayden Croft Returns!

This was Hayden Croft’s fourth appearance on this podcast because it represents his fourth film that has screened at either Film Invasion Los Angeles or Sherman Oaks Film Festival. In March 2018, he came by with actor/producer Jay Eftimoski to discuss their film “New Age, Olde English” which screened at SOFF 2016. In July 2021, he came by to discuss “Last Wish” which screened at FILA 2018. In September 2021, he came by to discuss “Four Junkies” which screened at SOFF 2019. And today he came in to discuss… The short film “Tax Time” that screened at FILA 2023 and, almost more importantly, his self-published short story anthology “Kisses from Strangers in the Dark” that he gave me in 2018, and his currently unpublished novel “Sand Ramsey is a Dick” aka “Oh No, NoHo” aka “No Way, NoHo.” We had a LOT to talk about! You can learn more about Hayden and his work at haydenlcroft.com and, to get a little high art on y’all, below is the poem Hayden recited on this podcast! “Combustible Criteria” By Hayden Croft   Contending with the coarseness, current culture calls “connection,” Confers a change - of course - on once conventional conceptions.   Collective condescension can oft condemn the callous, And the cover-up contenders, who conceal their constant malice.   They concoct a coalition of compelling conversations, To consort with the contentious, and contort all condemnations.   Coercion is a construct used to codify contrivance, And by condoning corporate conduct, one corroborates connivance.   Crude, continual conjecture on the concept that is class, Is both critical, and cynical, and caters to the crass.   In conscripting crowds to conquest, your charm must be contagious, Your commands be uncontested; your charisma be courageous.   To capture the chaotic, then condemn it to confinement. The combative must be concrete; any comfort’s by consignment.   The conditions of convection are conveyed through circulation,   And constricting coalescence, can’t constrain the conflagration.   Contained within this charter, is the credible collusion, Of contro-versy contagions, meant to counteract confusion.   Discover Indie Film Links DIF Website  - DIF Instagram  - DIF Facebook  - DIF Twitter  TVHi Links TVHi Website  - TVHi Instagram  - TVHi Facebook  - TVHi Twitter
