Title: How the West Won Subtitle: The Neglected Story of the Triumph of Modernity Author: Rodney Stark Narrator: Kevin Foley Format: Unabridged Length: 15 hrs and 25 mins Language: English Release date: 06-27-14 Publisher: Tantor Audio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 310 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: Modernity developed only in the West - in Europe and North America. Nowhere else did science and democracy arise; nowhere else was slavery outlawed. Only Westerners invented chimneys, musical scores, telescopes, eyeglasses, pianos, electric lights, aspirin, and soap. The question is, why? Unfortunately, that question has become so politically incorrect that most scholars avoid it. But acclaimed author Rodney Stark provides the answers in this sweeping new look at Western civilization. How the West Won demonstrates the primacy of uniquely Western ideas - among them the belief in free will, the commitment to the pursuit of knowledge, the notion that the universe functions according to rational rules that can be discovered, and the emphasis on human freedom and secure property rights. How the West Won displays Stark's gifts for lively narrative history and making the latest scholarship accessible to all. This bold, insightful book will force you to rethink your understanding of the West and the birth of modernity - and to recognize that Western civilization really has set itself apart from other cultures.

Title: Hitler Subtitle: A Biography Author: Ian Kershaw Narrator: Damian Lynch Format: Unabridged Length: 44 hrs and 5 mins Language: English Release date: 11-13-15 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 19 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: Hailed as the most compelling biography of the German dictator yet written, Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the heart of its subject's immense darkness. From his illegitimate birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in the 20th century. Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the character of the bizarre misfit in his 30-year ascent from a Viennese shelter for the indigent to uncontested rule over the German nation that had tried and rejected democracy in the crippling aftermath of World War I. With extraordinary vividness, Kershaw recreates the settings that made Hitler's rise possible: the virulent anti-Semitism of prewar Vienna, the crucible of a war with immense casualties, the toxic nationalism that gripped Bavaria in the 1920s, the undermining of the Weimar Republic by extremists of the Right and the Left and the hysteria that accompanied Hitler's seizure of power in 1933 and then mounted in brutal attacks by his storm troopers on Jews and others condemned as enemies of the Aryan race. In an account drawing on many previously untapped sources, Hitler metamorphoses from an obscure fantasist, a "drummer" sounding an insistent beat of hatred in Munich beer halls, to the instigator of an infamous failed putsch and, ultimately, to the leadership of a ragtag alliance of right-wing parties fused into a movement that enthralled the German people.

Title: The Sleepwalkers Author: Christopher Clark Narrator: Christopher Clark Format: Unabridged Length: 23 hrs and 9 mins Language: English Release date: 01-18-18 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: The pacy, sensitive and formidably argued history of the causes of the First World War, from acclaimed historian and author Christopher Clark. Sunday Times and Independent Books of the Year 2012. The moments that it took Gavrilo Princip to step forward to the stalled car and shoot dead Franz Ferdinand and his wife were perhaps the most fateful of the modern era. An act of terrorism of staggering efficiency, it fulfilled its every aim: it would liberate Bosnia from Habsburg rule, and it created a powerful new Serbia, but it also brought down four great empires, killed millions of men and destroyed a civilization. What made a seemingly prosperous and complacent Europe so vulnerable to the impact of this assassination? In The Sleepwalkers Christopher Clark retells the story of the outbreak of the First World War and its causes. Above all, it shows how the failure to understand the seriousness of the chaotic, near genocidal fighting in the Balkans would drag Europe into catastrophe.

Title: Bradford's History of the Plymouth Settlement, 1608-1650 Author: William Bradford, Harold Paget Narrator: James Winston Format: Unabridged Length: 11 hrs and 7 mins Language: English Release date: 12-31-17 Publisher: Audioliterature Ratings: 1 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: Bradford's history is a blend of fact and interpretation. The Bradford journal records not only the events of the first 30 years of the Plymouth Colony, but also the reactions of the colonists. That makes historians regard this book as the preeminent work of 17th century America. Bradford's journal is a simple yet vivid story. Though Bradford never made an effort to publish the manuscript, he did intend for it to be preserved and read by others: "I have been the larger in these things, and so shall crave leave in some like passages following, (though in other things I shall labour to be more contract) that their children may see with what difficulties their fathers wrestled in going through these things in their first beginnings, and how God brought them along notwithstanding all their weaknesses and infirmities." William Bradford (1590-1657) was an English Separatist migrating on the Mayflower in 1620 to Plymouth Colony, and became its governor for thirty years. Harold Paget (*1876) was an American historian. ©2017 Audioliterature (P)2017 Audioliterature

Title: The Strenuous Life: Essays and Addresses of Theodore Roosevelt Author: Theodore Roosevelt Narrator: George Doyle Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 5 mins Language: English Release date: 12-31-17 Publisher: Audioliterature Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: "The Strenuous Life: Essays and Addresses" is a collection of Theodore Roosevelt's published commentaries and public addresses on what is necessary for a vital and healthy political, social and individual life. Roosevelt states the main point of his speech in the opening remarks: "I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life, the life of toil and effort, of labor and strife; to preach that highest form of success which comes, not to the man who desires mere easy peace, but to the man who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, or from bitter toil, and who out of these wins the splendid ultimate triumph." br />An individual who puts great effort into his work and is not lazy, he claims, will be a success. It is the duty of someone who does not engage in manual labor for a living to devote himself to the arts or sciences. He uses the citizens of Chicago and Illinois as examples of people who embody such a spirit. Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. ©2017 Audioliterature (P)2017 Audioliterature

Title: The Alphabet Versus the Goddess Subtitle: The Conflict Between Word and Image Author: Leonard Shlain Narrator: Norman Dietz Format: Unabridged Length: 24 hrs and 4 mins Language: English Release date: 12-26-17 Publisher: Tantor Audio Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: Who changed the sex of God? This groundbreaking book proposes that the rise of alphabetic literacy reconfigured the human brain and brought about profound changes in history, religion, and gender relations. Making remarkable connections across brain function, myth, and anthropology, Dr. Shlain shows why pre-literate cultures were principally informed by holistic, right-brain modes that venerated the Goddess, images, and feminine values. Writing drove cultures toward linear left-brain thinking and this shift upset the balance between men and women, initiating the decline of the feminine and ushering in patriarchal rule. Examining the cultures of the Israelites, Greeks, Christians, and Muslims, Shlain reinterprets ancient myths and parables in light of his theory. Provocative and inspiring, this book is a paradigm-shattering work that will transform your view of history and the mind.

Title: The Jewish War Author: Flavius Josephus Narrator: Alastair Cameron Format: Unabridged Length: 19 hrs and 53 mins Language: English Release date: 12-26-17 Publisher: A.R.N. Publications Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 10 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: The Jewish rebellion against Rome was a significant turning point in Jewish history. Although Josephus is known for his divided loyalties in the rebellion, his account is the most detailed record available of the Jewish life and revolt under Roman rule. Born in Jerusalem to a father of priestly descent and a mother who claimed royal ancestry, Josephus was a first-century Romano-Jewish scholar, hagiographer, and historian. Josephus began as a Jewish leader of the rebellion but when captured by the Romans, he switched sides to work as a negotiator in their effort to suppress the resistance. As Josephus was in a position to view the conflict from both sides, his account is extremely insightful. Josephus's words create a vivid picture from the capture of Jerusalem to the mass suicides at Masada. The Jewish Wars is a historic account useful not only for biblical study but for history lovers as well. Josephus's recorded histories include the Antiquities of the Jews, along with The Jewish War.

Commissioned by the Communist League and originally published in London just as the revolutions of 1848 began to erupt, the Manifesto was later recognized as one of the world's most influential political manuscripts. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and then-present) and the problems of capitalism and the capitalist mode of production, rather than a prediction of communism's potential future forms. "The Communist Manifesto" summarizes Marx and Engels' theories about the nature of society and politics, that in their own words, "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles". It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism. Title: Paradise in Chains Subtitle: The Bounty Mutiny and the Founding of Australia Author: Diana Preston Narrator: Davina Porter Format: Unabridged Length: 13 hrs and 55 mins Language: English Release date: 11-07-17 Publisher: Recorded Books Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: Celebrated historian Diana Preston presents betrayals, escapes, and survival at sea in her account of the mutiny of the Bounty and the flight of convicts from the Australian penal colony. The story of the mutiny of the Bounty and William Bligh and his men's survival on the open ocean for 48 days and 3,618 miles has become the stuff of legend. But few realize that Bligh's escape across the seas was not the only open-boat journey in that era of British exploration and colonization. Indeed, nine convicts from the Australian penal colony, led by Mary Bryant, also traveled 3,250 miles across the open ocean and some uncharted seas to land at the same port Bligh had reached only months before. In this meticulously researched dual narrative of survival, acclaimed historian Diana Preston provides the background and context to explain the thrilling open-boat voyages each party survived and the Pacific Island nations each encountered on their journey to safety. Through this deep dive, listeners come to understand the Pacific Islands as they were and as they were perceived, and how these seemingly utopian lands became a place where mutineers, convicts, and eventually the natives themselves, were chained.

Title: Burke and Wills Subtitle: The Triumph and Tragedy of Australia's Most Famous Explorers Author: Peter FitzSimons Narrator: Michael Carman Format: Unabridged Length: 23 hrs and 42 mins Language: English Release date: 10-31-17 Publisher: Hachette Australia Audio Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 12 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: The iconic Australian exploration story - brought to life by Peter FitzSimons, Australia's storyteller. 'They have left here today!' he calls to the others. When King puts his hand down above the ashes of the fire, it is to find it still hot. There is even a tiny flame flickering from the end of one log. They must have left just hours ago. Melbourne, 20 August 1860. In an ambitious quest to be the first Europeans to cross the harsh Australian continent, the Victorian Exploring Expedition sets off, with 15,000 well-wishers cheering them on. Led by Robert O'Hara Burke, a brave man totally lacking in the bush skills necessary for his task; surveyor and meteorologist William Wills; and 17 others, the expedition took 20 tons of equipment carried on six wagons, 23 horses and 26 camels. Almost immediately plagued by disputes and sackings, the expeditioners battled the extremes of the Australian landscape and weather: its deserts, the boggy mangrove swamps of the Gulf, the searing heat and flooding rains. Food ran short and, unable to live off the land, the men nevertheless mostly spurned the offers of help from the local indigenous people. In desperation, leaving the rest of the party at the expedition's depot on Coopers Creek, Burke, Wills, Charley Gray and John King made a dash for the Gulf in December 1860. Bad luck and bad management would see them miss by just hours a rendezvous back at Coopers Creek, leaving them stranded in the wilderness with practically no supplies. Only King survived to tell the tale. Yet, despite their tragic fates, the names of Burke and Wills have become synonymous with perseverance and bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. They live on in our nation's history - and their story remains immediate and compelling.

Title: The Square and the Tower Subtitle: Networks, Hierarchies and the Struggle for Global Power Author: Niall Ferguson Narrator: John Sackville Format: Unabridged Length: 16 hrs and 11 mins Language: English Release date: 10-05-17 Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Square and the Tower by Niall Ferguson. What if everything we thought we knew about history was wrong? From the global best-selling author of Empire, The Ascent of Money and Civilization, this is a whole new way of looking at the world. Most history is hierarchical: it's about popes, presidents, and prime ministers. But what if that's simply because they create the historical archives? What if we are missing equally powerful but less visible networks - leaving them to the conspiracy theorists, with their dreams of all-powerful Illuminati? The 21st century has been hailed as the Networked Age. But in The Square and the Tower, Niall Ferguson argues that social networks are nothing new. From the printers and preachers who made the Reformation to the freemasons who led the American Revolution, it was the networkers who disrupted the old order of popes and kings. Far from being novel, our era is the Second Networked Age, with the computer in the role of the printing press. Those looking forward to a utopia of interconnected 'netizens' may therefore be disappointed. For networks are prone to clustering, contagions and even outages. And the conflicts of the past already have unnerving parallels today, in the time of Facebook, Islamic State and Trumpworld.

Title: In Search of the Old Ones Subtitle: Exploring the Anasazi World of the Southwest Author: David Roberts Narrator: Kaipo Schwab Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 57 mins Language: English Release date: 09-20-17 Publisher: Tantor Audio Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: An exuberant, hands-on fly-on-the-wall account that combines the thrill of canyoneering and rock climbing with the intellectual sleuthing of archaeology to explore the Anasazi. David Roberts describes the culture of the Anasazi - the name means "enemy ancestors" in Navajo - who once inhabited the Colorado Plateau and whose modern descendants are the Hopi Indians of Arizona. Archaeologists, Roberts writes, have been puzzling over the Anasazi for more than a century, trying to determine the environmental and cultural stresses that caused their society to collapse 700 years ago. He guides us through controversies in the historical record, among them the haunting question of whether the Anasazi committed acts of cannibalism. Roberts's book is full of up-to-date thinking on the culture of the ancient people who lived in the harsh desert country of the Southwest. Critic Reviews: "[Roberts's] awe at the region's beauty, with its sheer cliffs, canyons and mesas, and at the testaments to an unknown culture will be contagious for readers." ( Publishers Weekly)
