Description
Gill’s Mum, Kath made a prophecy many years before being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dementia, incensed when she heard people could be forced to sell their home to pay care fees, she made Gill swear she would never let that happen. Gill subsequently found that Kath’s words gave her the strength and tenacity to battle the Establishment for 7 arduous years, not only to save the family home, but more importantly, to ensure Kath received the correct level of care. Gill is looking to produce her play 'Do You Know Who I Am?' in order to give a platform to her own experiences and celebrate Kath's life

Here are a set of 4 podcasts, hosted by Gill and Yvonne. They discuss the prophecy Gill’s Mum, Kath made years before she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dementia. Whilst watching a news bulletin, she had been incensed when she heard that people could be forced to sell their home to pay care fees and she made Gill swear that she would never let that happen. Gill subsequently found that Kath’s words gave her the strength and tenacity to battle the Establishment for 7 arduous years, not only to save the family home, but more importantly, to ensure Kath received the correct level of care.
Gill and Yvonne talk about a Sector that is seemingly not fit for purpose and in Gill’s experience, appeared to be dependent on Continuing Health Care (CHC) tick box processes.
They discuss the unintended consequences and the cost to families, emotionally, practically, domestically, and financially when a loved one is diagnosed with a health condition, and the importance of having lasting power of attorney.
Gill discusses her relentless fight to force the authorities to address and act on Kath’s complex care needs that were consistently ignored by the myriad of professionals and departments who she feels avoided taking responsibility and accountability. Kath’s care needs were dismissed time and again.
Gill and Yvonne chat about the legacy Kath leaves behind. Her love of life and her witty, feisty character as a Sheffield pub landlady spanning from the late 60’s to late 80’s brought to life in a poignant play they have written called “Do You
Know Who I Am”, which raises awareness of Alzheimer’s Dementia but also celebrates and looks back on the life of Kath, as well showing the enduring bond of a mother and daughter.
If you are concerned and experiencing any of the issues outlined or are interested in helping to get “Do You Know Who I Am” into production, we would love to hear from you please get in touch with us by email at ifilosemymarbles@yahoo.com

After Kath died in December 2019, Gill tried to get back to some normality, and meeting Yvonne for lunch talked about how she could write a book about all that had happened. It was a flippant comment, which morphed into writing a play to
honour Kath’s life and raise awareness of having to navigate endless health and care systems and processes. The play ‘Do You Know Who I Am?’ is sad but uplifting too, showing the glamourous side of Kath, it has humour, and lots of musical
nostalgia. It shows how a mother and daughter relationship can endure the toughest of times.

No government has been able to address the ever-growing social care issues, where more and more individuals and families are impacted day after day. The so-called Continuing Health Care or CHC framework and its’ goalposts seem to shift like quicksand. Gill and Yvonne talk about the politics and what can be expected when families find themselves embroiled into the Social Care system, and the importance of holding Lasting Power of Attorney.
They chat about their play, Do You Know Who I Am? which they hope will provide a further platform to raise awareness.
