“That is why the Lord says, ‘Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.’ Return to the Lord for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.” Joel 2:12-13The book of Joel, the second of the minor prophets, is such a beautiful book. It’s not long, only three chapters, but packs quite a spiritual punch. It tells of a locust swarm. It tells of a call to repentance and what it means to rejoice in the Lord. It tells of the promise of the Spirit of the Lord. It tells of God’s judgment against enemy nations and blessings for God’s people. Joel is surely a book that, even though it might not be the most taught-through, has a lot of recognizable truths. To help us navigate the book of Joel is Dr. David Baker. David is Professor of Old Testament at Ashland Theological Seminary and author of a number of commentaries including one on Joel. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “O Israel and Judah, what should I do with you?” asks the Lord. “For your love vanishes like the morning mist and disappears like dew in the sunlight. I sent my prophets to cut you to pieces - to slaughter you with my words, with judgments as inescapable as light. I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings. But like Adam, you broke my covenant and betrayed my trust.” - Hosea 6:4-7We’re getting deeper into the prophets now as we’ve moved from what are considered the major prophets to the minor prophets. Now don’t let these terms color your view of these next books - the minor prophets have a lot to say. In fact, this conversation on Hosea has been one of my favorites. Honestly, I had not spent much time in Hosea before but man did re-reading it and spending time prepping for this conversation really impact me. Hosea is, yes, another prophet trying to warn Israel of the coming judgment of the Lord, but the approach Hosea takes hits home in a fresh way. To help us navigate the book of Hosea is Dr. Duane Garrett - chair of Old Testament at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and author of a commentary on Hosea. In this conversation Dr. Garrett and I talk about the continued role of prophets, the unique structure to Hosea, and why God seems to be focusing his attention on Israel rather than the surrounding pagan nations. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, ‘O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.” - Daniel 3:16-18The book of Daniel is perhaps the most well-known of the major prophets, but also perhaps the least understood. It is a book of variation: there are perfectly understandable and well-known stories, but there are also visions and dreams and angels and hands writing on walls. There is some truly crazy stuff in the book of Daniel, but at its heart Daniel is a book about the kingdom of God, the faithfulness of God, and the providence of God. To help us navigate the book of Daniel is Dr. John Goldingay, senior professor of Old Testament and David Allan Hubbard Professor Emeritus at Fuller Theological Seminary and author of many books about the Old Testament including a commentary on the book of Daniel.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “The next generation will live into the words we speak over them, so we should consider what words we are speaking over Gen Z. We, older generations, are responsible for raising, stewarding, and discipling the next generation, and right now, they are hearing from us, “We don’t like you.” - An excerpt from What Gen Z Really Wants to Know About God. We’re in a bit of a tale as old as time moment. There is a lot of discussion about Gen Z - and a lot of it negative. Honestly this seems like a not uncommon issue where older generations speak negatively about younger generations, but there is something that does seem different about the conversation surrounding Gen Z. Gen Z is considered the first digital native generation and there is data to show a decline in church engagement in Gen Z. As I read from the excerpt earlier, there is a narrative in place that Gen Z is lazy, difficult, and weak. But what if we flipped the narrative? What if we approached Gen Z with hope and optimism, maybe even appreciation for what we can learn from them? Gen Z isn’t just the future of the church, it’s the church today so how can we think of and approach Gen Z differently than the prevailing narratives. My guest today is Dr. Tanita Maddox, national director at Young Life and author of the new book What Gen Z Really Wants to Know About God. In this conversation, we talk about who Gen Z is, how they think, the relationship between Gen Z and the church, and why we should not only be hopeful about Gen Z but even see them as a brave, resilient generation. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “As Scripture reveals, the kind of wisdom we drink in ultimately guides our choices. It conditions our thoughts and molds our character and habits to become who we are. It influences the longings and desires of our heart and the ways we seek to find meaning. The right question then becomes, what kind of wisdom are we currently being guided by?” - An excerpt from The Man You’re Meant to Be. There’s a lot of talk lately about men and manhood. The rise of the so-called "manosphere" is a major factor in this. As we’ve talked about before, social media and podcasts and other forms of media are can be so specific as ecosystems that it’s easier than ever to be fed almost exclusively however you want to - like going to a Cheesecake Factory but choosing to only get the same thing repeatedly. Now that’s not necessarily a bad thing - the choice you make can be delicious and you can enjoy it every day. But . . . it can also mean that you’re only being fed by one source and that can and will begin to shape you. What you intake (what you watch or listen to) can and will shape your worldview. This is a major part of the manhood conversation and a part of the new book The Man You’re Meant to Be by my friend John Simons. John was a pastor at Saddleback Church working with men and is currently the men’s pastor at Rolling Hills Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee. In this conversation John and I talk about how the loneliness epidemic is affecting men, the impact of outside voices, wisdom from above vs. wisdom from below, and much more.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “So now, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will end the captivity of my people; I will have mercy on all Israel, for I jealously guard my hold reputation! They will accept responsibility for their past shame and unfaithfulness after they come home to live in peace in their own land, with no one to bother them. When I bring them home from the lands of their enemies, I will display my holiness among them for all the nations to see. Then my people will know that I am the Lord their God, because I sent them away to exile and brought them home again.” - Ezekiel 39:25-28My guest today has previously started his teaching on Ezekiel this way: “Why in the world would anybody want to read Ezekiel let alone study this unbelievable and incomprehensible book?” When I heard this - I immediately knew he was the guy I wanted to help us navigate this book. Ezekiel is a diamond in the rough in the canon of the prophets. It’s message is similar to the prophets we’ve read already, Isaiah and Jeremiah, but with an element we hadn’t quite seen before. Right away in chapter 1 Ezekiel says, “From the center of the cloud came four living beings that looked human, except that each had four faces and four wings.” Again - this is chapter 1. We’re clearly off to something a little different with Ezekiel. And there’s nobody better to help us navigate this different book than Dr. Daniel Block. Dan is the Gunther H. Knoedler Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Wheaton College and wrote a commentary on Ezekiel in 1998 that is still considered the gold standard commentary on Ezekiel. And you know what, Dan is still working on Ezekiel to this day. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. The garlands have fallen from our heads. Weep for us because we have sinned. Our hearts are sick and weary, and our eyes grow dim with tears. For Jerusalem is empty and desolate, a place haunted by jackals. But Lord, you remain the same forever! Your throne continues from generation to generation.” Lamentations 5: 15-19The book of Lamentations picks up right where Jeremiah left off. Jerusalem has fallen and the prophet Jeremiah is left weeping at what has occurred. Lamentations, though not necessarily easy to read, is a beautiful book showing the heart of a man so burdened with grief for the choices that the people of Jerusalem had made. It’s also a picture of God’s heart, grieving for his chosen people to return to him. But like the book of Jeremiah, Lamentations is not without hope. We are treated to a beautiful reminder of the faithfulness of God and that hope continues to rest in him and him alone. To help us navigate the book of Lamentations is Dr. Danny Hays, author of the Teach the Text commentary on Jeremiah and Lamentations.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “Why do some of us experience Christianity as a burden and others as a refuge? The answer, I am convinced, has to do with grace. Grace is the Big Relief at the heart of Christianity. When grace is down-played or qualified, faith turns into a project and then a burden. Project religion - the ancient human enterprise of proving ourselves morally and spiritually worthy of God’s love - is everywhere. When anchored to grace, however, Christianity remains good news. More than that, faith becomes a source of energy rather than a drain.” - an excerpt from The Big ReliefToday I’m excited to talk about one of my favorite books of the year. As I’ve mentioned a few times on this podcast, I’ve been on a bit of a grace kick lately. Grace was something I knew about, but honestly hadn’t spent a whole ton of time considering. It’s just the last few months though that I’ve really been sitting with grace and seeing just how beautiful, how important it is. So imagine my excitement when I saw a book about the urgency of grace in a worn-out world - right up my alley! And imagine how happy I was to start reading this book and seeing how good and funny it was. So today I’m thrilled to have on David Zahl, author of many books including The Big Relief. In this conversation, David and I talk about what makes grace stand out, the vertical and horizontal nature of grace, the difference between grace and mercy, how the church can be better beacons of grace, how to start living a grace first life today, and much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “But this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I will certainly bring my people back again from all the countries where I will scatter them in my fury. I will bring them back to this very city and let them live in peace and safety. They will be my people, and I will be their God. And I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship me, and they will never leave me. I will find joy doing good for them and will faithfully and wholeheartedly replant them in this land. - Jeremiah 32:37-41Jeremiah is a book not for the faint of heart. It’s a big book, 52 chapters and with a greater word count than any other book in the Bible. It’s a troubling book - the warnings from a prophet of God telling people what is going to befall them if they don’t repent and turn back to the God of their ancestors. It’s a sad book as it tells of the destruction of Jerusalem. There’s no doubt, Jeremiah is a behemoth of an Old Testament book. But, it’s not a book to ignore by any means. At its heart, even with the difficult things in the book, Jeremiah is still a book about hope. It’s still a book about the faithfulness of God. The passage I read at the beginning from Jeremiah 32 makes that clear. We learn so much about God in this book - it’s truly a rich, theological text. But like I said, it’s not for the faint of heart so to help us navigate this book today is Dr. Jerry Hwang, author of the ESV commentary on Jeremiah. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. The Marriage Game Plan

The Marriage Game Plan

2025-08-0543:32

“Marriage is hard, but there is hope. Knowing that we can win and have a fulfilling marriage gives us the hope and determination to fight for what we desire every day. A successful marriage is not easy and requires working hard and giving 100 percent as individuals and as a couple. For two people ready and willing to put in the hard work and effort, having a game plan could change everything.” - The Marriage Game Plan. Marriage is an arena where it’s all on the table - your spouse sees the best of you, the worst of you, and everything in between. It’s a place of partnership but also a place of refinement. There’s no doubt that marriage is hard, but as we heard in the opening quote, it’s entirely doable if you have a game plan. My friends George and Tondra Gregory are the authors of the new book The Marriage Game Plan. George and Tondra have been on this podcast many times in the past talking about marriage and I’m excited to talk with them today about their new book. We talk about why a game plan is crucial, how to navigate difficult conversations, how to better communicate, and lots more.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. I think we’d probably all agree that digital distraction is at an all time high. News from around the world is at our fingertips at a moment's notice. We get real-time updates on, well, everything. We can play any sort of game imaginable anywhere in the world and we can post our own thoughts and musings for anybody to see. Smartphones are truly an incredible innovation, but they come with a cost. Instead of engaging with the world right around us, we engage in a digital world filled with avatars and algorithms. Instead of looking up to God or out to the people directly in front of us, we look down into the screen of a metal rectangle. This past weekend at Saddleback, Pastor Darren Whitehead spoke on his book, The Digital Fast. Darren was kind enough to join this podcast to follow-up on his message. In this conversation we talk about how to fill the gaps in our time if not on our phones, spiritual practices and rhythms, reading the Bible, the difference between Australians and Americans, the calling of a generation to re-engage in the spiritual, and much more.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing. O Jacob, how can you say the Lord does not see your troubles? O Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights? Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth.” Isaiah 40:26-28As we enter the book of Isaiah, we are moving from the wisdom literature into the prophets. In many ways it’s a good thing that Isaiah is the first of the major prophets we read because it’s the most accessible. Isaiah paints a portrait, not just of Israelite history, but of the God who is above it all - the God who is both creator and master of all things, but also close, loving and kind. Isaiah is a long book coming in at 66 chapters, but it is rich with history, the character of God, and hope for the savior that is to come. To help us navigate the book of Isaiah is Dr. Andrew Abernethy Professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College and author of not one, not two, but three books on Isaiah. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Originally Released July 4 2023Saddleback Church Content Development Pastor Jason Wieland is joined by author, teacher, and spoken word artist Hosanna Wong for a conversation around identity in Christ and how to adopt the rhythms of Jesus. One of the most fundamental questions of life is Who Am I? and, in Christian circles, we are often rushed to answer that our identity is in Christ. But how do we really find out what this means and, even when we do feel connected to Jesus, how do we keep that connection? This conversation addresses these questions and dives deep into looking at four rhythms or spiritual disciplines that you can begin adopting in your own life. Hosanna Wong is an international speaker, best-selling author and spoken word artist helping everyday people know Jesus for real. Widely known for her spoken word piece, "I Have A New Name," Hosanna shares in churches, conferences, prisons, and other events around the world, reaching across various denominations, backgrounds and cultures.Born and raised in an urban ministry on the streets of San Francisco, Hosanna later packed her life into suitcases and traveled to churches and other ministries throughout the United States to share about Jesus through spoken word poetry. During those years without a permanent home, she began speaking and creating resources to serve the local and global Church.Hosanna currently travels and speaks year-round, and serves on teaching teams at churches throughout the United States. She and her husband, Guy serve together in various ministries equipping people with tools to share the gospel of Jesus in today's world.Hosanna is the best-selling author of How (Not) to Save the World and You Are More Than You've Been Told. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “For the beauty of a journey is that it doesn’t need to be just one thing but can be many things spread out over time and over the many legs of the adventure . . . The Christian story may have already played out with robed people in a bygone past, but I believe it also continues to move, roll on, slosh, and rise in me each morning and moon.” - The Journey of GodAll of history has a central theme: God wants a family. This is why the universe was made - so God could make people. This is the story of the Israelites through the Old Testament. This is redemption story, Jesus living on earth and dying on the cross to make it possible for God’s family to live with him forever. This is the story of the church - spreading the Good News that God wants a family and that family learning how to live together. This is the story of the end, God’s family finally living with Him in perfect relationship forever. This may be a central theme, but there is so much in it to unpack and J.D. Lyonhart does just that in his new book, The Journey of God. J.D. is a professor of religion and philosophy at University of Jamestown and co-host of the Spiritually Incorrect Podcast. In this episode, J.D. and I talk about why it’s okay to have fun when talking about the Bible, the central theme of Jesus’ presence, how we should think about sin and redemption, current issues facing the church, and much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Originally Released Dec. 5, 2023When an athlete trains and practices in his or her sport, they are achieving multiple goals at the same time. They get stronger by lifting weights. They get more agile and increase endurance by running and doing sprints. They develop muscle memory by practicing their sport and certain moves over and over and over again. All of this is in pursuit of being ready for the competition – ready for game day. As Christians, we have our own exercises – we call them spiritual practices. We grow stronger in our faith through reading Scripture. We grow more agile and increase endurance through fasting and silence and solitude. We develop muscle memory through gratitude. Today’s episode is all about spiritual practices. Host Jason Wieland is joined today by Reward Sibanda. Reward and Jason go in-depth on what spiritual practices are, what they do to and for you, and why it’s important to make spiritual practices a part of your life. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. In this episode of Doable Discipleship, host Jason Wieland talks about what it means to choose to move in - to engage in relationships. He talks about some of the reasons why we may want to isolate or choose something easier, but offers a different perspective on why it's important to choose to engage. He talks about what the Bible says and encourages you to move in the way Jesus did. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “You have captured my heart, my treasure, my bride. You hold it hostage with one glance of your eyes, with a single jewel of your necklace. Your love delights me, my treasure my bride.” Song of Songs 4:9-10Song of Songs is the last of the Biblical wisdom literature and puts a bow on our time with Solomon. It’s a book not commonly taught from because of its intimate nature, but I was grateful to find somebody who is actually currently teaching through this book at his church. Dr. James Hamilton is Professor of Biblical Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is the Senior Pastor at Kenwood Baptist Church. In this conversation, Jim and I talk about the rich theological truths of Song of Songs, what we can learn from all of Solomon’s writings, the connection between Song of Songs and Genesis, and much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “What do people really get for all their hard work? I have seen the burden God has placed on us all. Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:9-11Ecclesiastes is one of my favorite books of the Bible. I might be weird in this, I don’t know many other people who would say Ecclesiastes is their favorite. To me, it’s one of the most human books in the whole Bible. Not only does it have some of my favorite verses, but it’s such a relatable look at one man’s struggles. Ecclesiastes is another entry in the Wisdom Literature of the Bible, along with Job, Psalms and Proverbs and, even though it may not seem like wisdom literature at first glance, it becomes clear why the more you spend time in it.To help us navigate the book of Ecclesiastes is Dr. Richard Belcher. Originally published Dec. 12, 2023Have you ever asked yourself the question: Why should I get out of bed? In today's episode, host Jason Wieland, Content Development Pastor at Saddleback Church, talks about his favorite book of 2023. It's called On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden & Gift of Living by Alan Noble. This short, 104-page book is rich in its look at anxiety, depression, and other hardships of life. It doesn't sugarcoat the realities of suffering. For anybody who may not struggle with these issues themselves, Dr. Noble paints an important picture of what life is truly like for those in this daily fight. However, this book is truly one of hope as it reminds us of the reality of our good creation, the presence of our good Creator and the truth that your life is a testimony of that goodness - whether you are having a good day or not.Join Jason as he dives into this impactful, important book. We’ve done many episodes of Doable Discipleship about identity, largely because it’s such an important topic in a world that constantly tries to fight for the right to control your identity, but also because there’s just so much to talk about, particularly from the Christian perspective. And today I want to add two more facets to that conversation: self-esteem and bias. The premise: who you think you are creates a bias, even an unconscious one, in how you receive input about your life and how you view other people. It affects how you handle success, failure, advice, friendships, and so much more. Christians have the opportunity to anchor their identity, and therefore their bias and self-esteem in two key biblical truths. To talk to us about bias, self-esteem, and these biblical truths is Dr. Erin Devers, professor of psychology and Indiana Wesleyan University and author of the new book, The Unbiased Self. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. It premiered in 2017 and now offers more than 400 episodes.
