As Sophie De Luca has learned, many things really are better the second time around. She's celebrating a wonderful year of marriage to her sweet second husband, Goebel. Narrator: Hillary Huber
Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 7 mins
Language: English
Release date: 01-23-18
Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
Publisher's Summary:
A sharp and bitingly funny novel about a professor whose calm-ish Midwestern life gives way to a vortex of crises - and her attempts to salvage the pieces without going to pieces herself.
In the space of a few torrid months on the Iowa prairie, Phillipa Maakestad - long-married theater professor and mother of an unstable daughter - grapples with a life turned upside down. After falling headlong into a passionate affair during a semester spent teaching in Ohio, Phillipa returns home to Iowa for her daughter Ginny's wedding. There, Phillipa must endure (among other things) a wedding-day tornado, a menace of a mother-in-law who may or may not have been a Nazi collaborator, and the tragicomic revenge fantasies of her heretofore docile husband.Naturally, she does what any newly liberated woman would do: she takes a match to her life on the prairie and then steps back to survey the wreckage.Set in the seething political climate of a contentious election, Thisbe Nissen's new novel is sexy, smart, and razor-sharp - a freight train barreling through the heart of the land and the land of the heart.

Title: A Complicated Kindness
Author: Miriam Toews
Narrator: Miriam Toews
Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 44 mins
Language: English
Release date: 11-21-17
Publisher: Vintage Canada
Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
Publisher's Summary:
Sixteen-year-old Nomi Nickel longs to hang out with Lou Reed and Marianne Faithfull in New York City's East Village. Instead she's trapped in East Village, Manitoba, a small town whose population is Mennonite: "the most embarrassing sub-sect of people to belong to if you're a teenager". East Village is a town with no train and no bar whose job prospects consist of slaughtering chickens at the Happy Family Farms abattoir or churning butter for tourists at the pioneer village. Ministered with an iron fist by Nomi's uncle Hans, aka The Mouth of Darkness, East Village is a town that's tall on rules and short on fun: no dancing, drinking, rock 'n' roll, recreational sex, swimming, make-up, jewellery, playing pool, going to cities, or staying up past nine o'clock.
As the novel begins, Nomi struggles to cope with the back-to-back departures three years earlier of Tash, her beautiful and mouthy sister, and Trudie, her warm and spirited mother. She lives with her father, Ray, a sweet yet hapless schoolteacher whose love is unconditional but whose parenting skills amount to benign neglect. Father and daughter deal with their losses in very different ways. Ray, a committed elder of the church, seeks to create an artificial sense of order by reorganizing the city dump late at night. Nomi, on the other hand, favours chaos as she tries to blunt her pain through "drugs and imagination." Together they live in a limbo of unanswered questions.
Nomi's first-person narrative shifts effortlessly between the present and the past. Within the present, Nomi goes through the motions of finishing high school while flagrantly rebelling against Mennonite tradition. She hangs out on Suicide Hill, hooks up with a boy named Travis, goes on the Pill, wanders around town, skips class, and cranks Led Zeppelin. But the past is never far from her mind as she remembers happy times with her mother and sister - as well as the painful events that led them to flee town. Throughout, in a voice both defiant and vulnerable, she offers hilarious and heartbreaking reflections on life, death, family, faith and love.
Eventually Nomi's grief - and a growing sense of hypocrisy - cause her to spiral ever downward to a climax that seems at once startling and inevitable. But even when one more loss is heaped on her piles of losses, Nomi maintains hope and finds the imagination and willingness to envision what lies beyond.
Few novels in recent years have generated as much excitement as A Complicated Kindness. Winner of the Governor General's Award and a Giller Prize Finalist, Miriam Toews' third novel has earned both critical acclaim and a long and steady position on our national best-seller lists.
Critic Reviews:
"Poignant.... Bold, tender and intelligent, this is a clear-eyed exploration of belief and belonging, and the irresistible urge to escape both." (Publishers Weekly)
"...knockout novel....There's leave-taking in this book. But there's wholeness, too. It is a joy." (Jennifer Wells, Toronto Star)
"In novel full of original characters...Toews has created a feisty but appealing young heroine.... As an indictment against religious fundamentalism, A Complicated Kindness is timely. As a commentary on character it is fresh and inventive, and as storytelling it is first rate." (The London Free Press)

Title: Moving Kings
Subtitle: A Novel
Author: Joshua Cohen
Narrator: Jonathan Davis
Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 13 mins
Language: English
Release date: 07-11-17
Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
Publisher's Summary:
A propulsive, incendiary novel about faith, race, class, and what it means to have a home, from Joshua Cohen, "a major American writer" (The New York Times)
One of the boldest voices of his generation, Joshua Cohen returns with Moving Kings, a powerful and provocative novel that interweaves, in profoundly intimate terms, the housing crisis in America's poor black and Hispanic neighborhoods with the world's oldest conflict, in the Middle East.
The year is 2015, and 21-year-olds Yoav and Uri, veterans of the last Gaza War, have just completed their compulsory military service in the Israel Defense Forces. In keeping with national tradition, they take a year off for rest, recovery, and travel. They come to New York City and begin working for Yoav's distant cousin David King - a proud American patriot, Republican, and Jew, and the recently divorced proprietor of King's Moving Inc., a heavyweight in the tristate area's moving and storage industries. Yoav and Uri now must struggle to become reacquainted with civilian life, but it's not easy to move beyond their traumatic pasts when their days are spent kicking down doors as eviction movers in the ungentrified corners of the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens, throwing out delinquent tenants and seizing their possessions. And what starts off as a profitable if eerily familiar job - an "occupation" - quickly turns violent when they encounter one homeowner seeking revenge.
Critic Reviews:
"Joshua Cohen's Moving Kings is a lit fuse, a force let loose, a creeping flame heading for demolition, and Cohen himself is a fierce polyknower in command of the moving parts of the human predicament. A master of argot and wit, he writes the language of men in a staccato yet keening idiom of his own invention. And though it is set in a grungy New York, call this the first Israeli combat novel ever dared by an American writer." (Cynthia Ozick)
"Joshua Cohen is a blacksmith who heats, hammers, and molds the language to sharpest, most precise points - not for the sake of craft, but to tell a troubled story about troubled life in the twenty-first century. This is a dazzling and poignant book." (Rachel Kushner)

Titolo: Un altro giro di giostra
Sottotitolo: Viaggio nel male e nel bene del nostro tempo
Autore: Tiziano Terzani
Narratore: Edoardo Siravo
Formato: Unabridged
Durata: 22 hrs and 56 mins
Lingua: Italiano
Data di pubblicazione: 07-04-17
Editore: Salani
Valutazioni: 4.5 su 5 su 3 voti
Categoria: Fiction, Contemporary
Riepilogo Editore:
©2011 Longanesi & C., Milano (P)2011 Adriano Salani Editore s.u.r.l., Milano
Recensioni critiche:

He takes her from the front of her school into a world of robbery, violence, and the constant threat of death. And he does it to save her life.
Nate made dangerous enemies in prison - a gang called Aryan Steel has put out a bounty on his head, counting on its members on the outside to finish him off. They've already murdered his ex-wife, Polly's mother. And Polly is their next target.
Nate and Polly's lives soon become a series of narrow misses, of evading the bad guys and the police, of sleepless nights in motels. Out on the lam, Polly is forced to grow up early: With barely any time to mourn her mother, she must learn how to take a punch and pull off a drug-house heist. She finds herself transforming from a shy little girl into a true fighter. Nate, in turn, learns what it's like to love fiercely and unconditionally - a love he's never quite felt before. But can their powerful bond transcend the dangerous existence he's carved out for them? Will they ever be able to live an honest life, free of fear?
She Rides Shotgun is a gripping and emotionally wrenching novel that upends even our most long-held expectations about heroes, villains, and victims. Nate takes Polly to save her life, but in the end it may very well be Polly who saves him.

Publisher's Summary:
Every summer, four college friends hold a mini reunion. They laugh, reminisce, and commiserate about their soul-sucking jobs. Maybe they should have listened to everyone who warned them to study something "practical".
Then an unexpected windfall arrives - $1 million, to be exact - with the stipulation that they use it to jump-start their new careers. Almost overnight, a professor, a bartender, a copywriter, and an administrative assistant reinvent themselves as a novelist, an event planner, a pastry chef, and a bed-and-breakfast owner. But the changes in their professional roles create unexpected turbulence in their personal lives, and soon the secrets and scandals from their past start to resurface. For anyone who has ever wondered "what if?" this engaging novel provides a sweet, funny look at friendship, romance, and second chances.
