In this podcast, we’re going to talk about a very fascinating study relating to COVID-19.  Vitamin D is not only associated with decreased severity from COVID-2 but also decreased mortality from COVID-2. A study that involved 780 confirmed cases of SARS-COVID-2 showed decreased severity in blood clots, hypoxia, and respiratory stress.  There were three groups involved in the study: Group 1: Had enough vitamin D Group 2: Had insufficient vitamin D Group 3: Had a deficiency in vitamin D The group that had a deficiency in vitamin D had a much higher mortality rate than the group that had enough vitamin D.  Vitamin D can potentially put out the cytokine storm. Today we’re going to talk about viruses and the immune system. It’s not the virus that kills you. It’s actually your own immune system.  The virus doesn’t have a metabolism. It’s not even alive. Here’s what happens. You have this inactive shell with some DNA that has some very specific instructions to replicate. There are certain things on the surface of the virus that connect to certain tissues and certain receptors in the cell.  For example, COVID-19 connects to the ACE2 receptor. Once it connects, it’s able to get into the cell. Once inside of the cell, the immune system doesn’t see it at first. The goal of the virus is to get into the cell and replicate as fast as possible. This creates a lot of damage and an immune reaction, but it’s not what kills you.  Let’s say you have COVID-19, you’re on a respirator, and you have cytokine storm. This is creating massive destruction, which can lead to death. This destructive inflammatory condition is also happening on the inside of your arteries, and it can even create blood clots. The innate part of the immune system is overreacting because part of the adaptive immune system is not working. The T suppressor cells, which are a part of the adaptive immune system, suppress or regulate the overreaction. But, there is a severe imbalance going on where you lose the adaptive immune system, including the T suppressor cells, and there is too much of the innate immune system causing the overreaction. This is what’s really killing people.  The virus is a trigger, and it causes damage, but the virus mainly seems to kill people with a weak immune system. It’s usually certain metabolic conditions that cause weakness within the T suppressor cells. In this podcast, I want to talk to you about vitamin A and your immune system. Now, I’ve done plenty of other videos on the role of zinc, vitamin D, and vitamin C in the immune system, but I haven’t touched on vitamin A yet.  Vitamin A is an essential part of the immune system. A vitamin A deficiency will leave your body susceptible to infections—especially in the respiratory system, including your lungs, sinuses, and throat.  You need vitamin A for your mucous membranes. In particular, vitamin A is required for the creation of mucin. Mucin is an essential part of the mucus membrane.  Vitamin A is also involved in the epithelial layer and lymphatic system layer. Each of these acts as a barrier for microbes.  When pathogens enter the body, your body triggers macrophages. These are large phagocytic cells that consume pathogens and clean up other harmful debris. Macrophages are your body’s first line of defense against infection.  Your thymus gland, which is right above the heart, helps train your immune cells. The thymus can actually activate and synthesize vitamin A.  Vitamin A is also required for dendritic cells and neutrophil traps.  When you’re low in vitamin A, your risk increases for: • Ulcerative colitis  • MS • Psoriasis • Lupus How can you get more vitamin A? Today we're going to talk about "intermittent" and what that really means. We're going to cover intermittent fasting, the biggest intermittent fasting mistake, and intermittent exercise.  A healthy body has really good circadian rhythms. These are natural waves of rhythm like:  • Sleep cycles  • Eating cycles   • Rhythms of digestion  • Rhythms of hormones Anything we do of a sustained nature adds more stress to the body. For example, one of the most important things intermittent fasting does is correcting digestion. The body was not designed to consume on a sustained basis (snacking in between meals). Sustained eating can create sustained stimulation of insulin, which can lead to insulin resistance and diabetes. It's very important to fast, and not eat anything when you're fasting. But, you can drink water and take supplements during fasting.  High-intensity interval training is intermittent exercise. This can help stimulate growth hormone. Doing this high-intensity exercise intermittently is important because it won't stimulate the opposing hormone: cortisol. It keeps the stress down while still stimulating growth hormone. The growth hormone is stimulated by the high intensity. But, cortisol is stimulated by duration, which you're keeping short.  Recovery is also very important. Today we're going to talk about the benefits of hydroxychloroquine that actually go beyond just killing COVID-19.  Hydroxychloroquine has been used for over 70 years as a malaria drug. It's been repurposed for COVID-19. Hydroxychloroquine is also a very inexpensive drug.  There are some reports that hydroxychloroquine is ineffective and could even be dangerous. But when you look deeper into the study their claims are based on—it's bogus. Hydroxychloroquine benefits that go beyond killing the coronavirus: 1. It's a zinc ionophore  2. It's antithrombotic  3. It's an alkalizer  4. It suppresses an overactive immune system  5. It's a powerful anti-inflammatory  6. It helps reduce autoantibodies  But, there may be a point of no return. In this podcast, we're going to talk about some really interesting benefits of sunlight that go beyond just vitamin D.  When the sun hits your skin, certain chemical reactions occur that generate vitamin D from the cholesterol in your skin. You actually need cholesterol to make vitamin D.  Health benefits of sunlight that go beyond vitamin D: 1. When the sun hits your skin and retinas, it can increase serotonin, which can potentially affect your mood.  2. The sun can reduce melatonin. Melatonin helps you sleep.  3. In this podcast, we’re going to talk about vitamin D and blood pressure. I want to cover why vitamin D can potentially help someone with hypertension.  Never stop taking your blood pressure medication unless you’ve checked with your doctor. But, if you’re on blood pressure medication and you’re not taking vitamin D, you might want to consider taking it.  One of the most commonly prescribed drugs for hypertension is an ACE inhibitor. This drug inhibits the angiotensin-converting enzyme. This enzyme relates to an entire system in your body, which is called the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). The RAS helps regulate:  • Blood pressure   • Fluid balance   • Electrolyte balance  Vitamin D actually helps lower the RAS. My theory is that the reason this system could be high in the first place is that the person has a vitamin D deficiency. 75% of the population has some level of vitamin D deficiency.  What might help lower blood pressure (research and talk to your doctor about it): ***10,000-20,000 IUs of vitamin D3 with vitamin K2   • If you do 10,000 IUs of vitamin D3, then consider 100 mcg of vitamin K2.  • If you do 20,000 IUs of vitamin D3, then consider  •  200 mcg of vitamin K2.   • You could also consider adding 1000 mg of potassium a day. Some of the organic foods that you buy from Wholefoods are actually from China.  The United States does not inspect imported foods. In very small print on certain organic products from Wholefoods, you'll see that it says "product of China." Not all of the foods are from China, but it's important to check the labels to make sure they aren't products of China. Even the "California Blend Vegetables" said "product of China" on the label.  Organic means "without pesticides, insecticides, and antibiotics." There have been some interesting new findings on why people are dying from COVID-19. It’s been thought that COVID-19 is more of a pneumonia type problem or ARDS. But, they have found that it’s actually more of a thrombosis, which is blood clots. This could explain why some people are also getting heart attacks or strokes.  The virus is triggering inflammatory cytokines. If a person has a pre-existing condition or a weak immune system, they could get an overreaction of cytokines called a cytokine storm. They also don’t have the enzymes that are supposed to resolve the situation, which causes a massive amount of oxidative stress. At this point, the tissues are being destroyed, and the person is starving for oxygen.  Hydroxychloroquine, which is being used in some cases as a treatment for COVID-19, just so happens to be anti-thrombotic. It can help prevent clotting. It’s also anti-inflammatory. Today we’re going to talk about the Black Plague pandemic. This pandemic roughly occurred around 1348. There were between 70-200 million people that died during that pandemic.  A discovery was made by digging up and examining the skeletons from an unmarked grave in northern London. They found that a good number of these skeletons had:  • Rickets (rickets is a severe vitamin D deficiency)  • Bad teeth (bad teeth can be due to a vitamin D deficiency)  • Anemia   • Injuries (potentially from a war) So there was a combination of malnutrition and a war that could create a perfect storm for a weakened immune system.  A vitamin D deficiency can create:  • Susceptibility to infection   • A low number of white blood cells  • Weak white blood cells  • Less control of inflammation  There was also a pandemic that occurred in 1918 called the Spanish Flu, in which about 50-100 million people died. Both of these pandemics peaked in the winter, which is also the time of year when people typically get the least amount of vitamin D.  There was also a war going on at the time or near the time of both of these pandemics. This could have caused a drop in nutritional levels because people started eating differently. There weren’t a lot of fresh, nutrient-dense foods available, especially for soldiers.  With COVID-19, the people who are dying are older, and people with a weakened immune system. It’s possible that the COVID-19 mortality rate may be slightly less than what they’ve been telling you.  Two recent studies focused on measuring antibodies to the virus. The purpose was to find out the true infection rate.  University of Southern California   • 863 people were tested  • 4.1% of the group had antibodies to the virus  Stanford University   • 3300 people were tested   • 2.4 - 4.2% of the group had antibodies to the virus  The infection rate was thought to be 7994 when in actuality, it was between 220,000 and 442,000. Today we’re going to talk about an interesting case study that was done by a Brazilian doctor working with a patient who had myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease is where you have what they call autoantibodies that are against your own tissues. This particular autoimmune disease attacks the connection between your nerves and your muscles. This creates a lot of muscle problems.  One of the treatments commonly used for this condition is steroids. But, unfortunately, there are a lot of side effects when you take steroids.  This doctor used between 80,000 and 120,000 IUs of vitamin D3 and was able to put this patient’s symptoms in remission.  Vitamin D is hormone-like and acts as a steroid without the side-effects. It also supports the T regulatory cells, which is a part of the immune system that helps prevent autoimmune diseases.  There is a huge connection with a lot of autoimmune diseases and vitamin D deficiency. But, one of the concerns people have with taking high doses of vitamin D is a condition called hypercalcemia. This is high calcium in the blood, which could potentially lead to kidney stones. To lessen this risk, the doctor told the patient to omit calcium from the diet. Do you need to get more serious about the coronavirus (COVID-19)? There are many definitions of the word serious. But, the definition of serious that we’re focusing on here refers to looming danger or grave danger. Basically, you’re afraid.    The problem is that being in a state of fear can greatly affect your immune system. It can increase cortisol and adrenalin, making you more susceptible to disease.  It is vital, despite what’s happening in your environment, to try to maintain an attitude of ease (being less serious). There is no benefit of being overly serious about anything or being in a state of fear.  The more fear and inaction, the more stress the person is in, and the more cortisol, the weaker the immune system. A better option may be to stay in action, stay calm, and get the facts. There is a big difference between fact and opinion:  • Facts are based on evidence—truth.  • Opinions may or may not be based on facts. Today we’re going to talk about COVID-19, temperature, and humidity. Could COVID-19 get better in the summer? Studies on COVID-19 and temperature: Study: High temperature and high humidity could significantly reduce the transmission of COVID-19. For every increase in 1 degree Celsius and increase in 1% humidity, there’s a decrease by R (the infection rate) by .0383 and .0224. Study: There are greater infections in the northern hemisphere versus the lower hemisphere. This may have to do with distance from the sun and how much vitamin D people are able to get.  Study: Showed an inverse relationship between humidity, temperature, and COVID-19 infections.  Certain viruses are seasonal and peak in the winter because they’re more stable in cold temperatures. During the winter months, people also tend to have higher levels of cortisol, which weakens the immune system.  During the winter months, you’re also going to get less vitamin D, which can weaken the immune system. There are even more benefits of sunlight that go beyond vitamin D and temperature, that you’re missing out on in the winter months.  If there are viruses that are peaking in the winter months, it’s important to keep your immune system strong during this time. You can also take vitamin D and do whatever you can to help counter the increase in cortisol. In this podcast, I want to talk to you about the ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting, your thyroid, and your hair. Some people who go on an intermittent fasting and keto plan notice hair loss. Some people also feel cold and have an enlarged thyroid. There is a way to do keto correctly, so you don’t have hair loss and a thyroid problem.  Vitamin A activates thyroid receptors. The pituitary sends a hormone down to the thyroid that controls it. The hormone is called thyroid-stimulating hormone, or TSH. It changes the size of the thyroid and the production of hormones, like T4. Low levels of vitamin A can inhibit the thyroid receptors of TSH. In turn, your pituitary produces more and more TSH to try to force the thyroid to work.  When this situation happens, it can cause the thyroid to enlarge. In turn, this can make you cold and contribute to hair loss.  Vitamin A comes from: • Liver • Eggs • Butter • Fish oil • Greens If you don’t consume enough of these foods, you could be low in vitamin A.  The other causes of low vitamin A could be: • Fatty or inflamed liver • Low gallbladder bile or no gallbladder • Gastric bypass • SIBO Low levels of zinc is another very common problem that causes thyroid issues. This is often caused by avoiding all animal products, like with a vegetarian or vegan diet. In this podcast, we’re going to talk about what vitamin D can do for the cytokine storm.  A cytokine storm is basically what’s really killing the majority of people who die from COVID-19. But, it’s only deadly if the person’s immune system is malfunctioning.  There is a really interesting study that compared the two countries with the highest mortality rates from COVID-19 to the countries with the lowest mortality rates from COVID-19. They looked at their vitamin D levels. They found a correlation between the higher mortality rates and low vitamin D. Not only that; they found a strong correlation between vitamin D and cytokine storm. People that had the most vitamin D did not have the cytokine storm.  Vitamin D is an immune modulator. It controls the amount of inflammation within the immune system. A cytokine is a signaling protein that can:  • Increase the number of white blood cells  • Cause inflammation  • Suppress inflammation  • Stimulate angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels) Just like how your immune system has strategies to fight off pathogens, pathogens have strategies to survive and counter attacks.  During a cytokine storm, there is a hyperinflammatory reaction going on that creates a lot of damage in the body.  Vitamin D may be able to help suppress cytokines. But, if your immune system is already healthy, you don’t really have to worry about anything. Today we’re going to talk about antibodies and how you can create your own immunity through your own antibodies.  You have this amazing and powerful internal defense mechanism, or immunity, that helps neutralize enemies. There are two parts of the immune system: The innate— You are born with this. It doesn’t need any training. It has a general defense mechanism for day to day activity. When things get too intense, they signal the acquired immune system to get help.  The acquired or adaptive— This is the back-up force. The acquired has very specific actions to help protect you. This part of the immune system is acquired or adapted over time. It learns from experience. If it’s not first exposed to a virus, it won’t learn anything.  Hypothetically, vaccines are supposed to create artificial immunity. But, your own body can even create immunity to pathogens. It all occurs mainly from the B cells, which are a part of the acquired immune system. B cells have receptors that can reach out and grab pathogens. These are called antibodies. Antibodies neutralize the enemy (a pathogen).  A virus becomes dangerous when it gets inside of the cell. If you recover from a virus, the next time you’re exposed to this virus, you’ll be immune to it. This is because you now have antibodies waiting to neutralize the virus.  High levels of cortisol can decrease your antibodies. Low levels of zinc or vitamin D can also cause you not to have the full capacity of your antibodies.  Certain viruses can also create white blood cell amnesia, which causes the antibodies not to remember what to attack. Today we’re going to talk about the cheapest potential COVID-19 therapy in the world. What we’re talking about is the sun, and what it can do to give you vitamin D. Of course, this is actually free, all you have to do is go out and get 20 minutes of sun.  Somalian immigrants make up a very small community in Stockholm, Sweden. They make up less than 1% of the entire population of Stockholm. Yet, in Stockholm, 40% of all of the COVID-19 deaths were from this small group.  What puts people at risk for COVID-19?:  • Pre-existing health problems (obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, COPD, asthma) This group didn’t have many of these problems, and they weren’t all over the age of 60. But, what they do have is darker skin. The melanin that changes the color of the skin—protects against UV. But, it also prevents the absorption of vitamin D. In Chicago, 72% of deaths due to the coronavirus were African American.  The Somalian group also has a dress code that requires them to be almost fully covered, which can prevent vitamin D absorption.  It has also been found that the great majority of COVID-19 deaths were in the Northern hemisphere. This could be related to the distance between where you are and the sun, and how much vitamin D you’re going to get. In this podcast, I want to give you a quick way to know if you have brain damage. The truth is, everyone acquires some degree of damage in their brain as they age. This has to do with a lack of fuel in your neurons.  In one study, it was shown that the average person loses about 30% of their brain cells as they reach old age. This happens very gradually over time. The early signs of dementia can come on slowly—you might start forgetting where you put your keys or forget someone’s name.  When your neurons are starving of fuel, you will notice: • Loss of memory • Lack of clarity • Loss of focus and poor attention span This all comes from consuming a high carbohydrate diet. Over time, carbs cause insulin resistance, and glucose cannot supply the brain cells with energy.  Neurons actually prefer a different type of fuel: ketones. If given a choice between glucose and ketones, your neurons will choose ketones every time.  There are two simple experiments you can do to find out if you have brain damage: 1. Go on a healthy ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting plan, which promotes the creation of ketones.  2. Use MCT oil - this instantly creates ketones.  After 1-2 weeks, take note of your cognitive improvements. If there are significant improvements, this could be a sign of damage due to low nutrients in your brain. In this case, it’s important to stay on a keto and intermittent fasting plan.
