Description

We’re at our most vulnerable when we go to our doctors. We trust the person at the other end of that scalpel. We trust the hospital. We trust the system.

Christopher Duntsch was a neurosurgeon who radiated confidence. He claimed he was the best in Dallas. If you had back pain, and had tried everything else, Dr. Duntsch could give you the spine surgery that would take your pain away.

But soon his patients started to experience complications, and the system failed to protect them. Which begs the question: who - or what - is that system meant to protect?

From Wondery, the network behind the hit podcast Dirty John, DR. DEATH is a story about a charming surgeon, 33 patients and a spineless system. Reported and hosted by Laura Beil.

All physicians are taught, “First do no harm.” But what happens when a doctor does harm his patients?Dr. Robert Henderson was a veteran spinal surgeon in Dallas when he got an unusual phone call from a local hospital: a new surgeon had operated so poorly that a patient who’d walked in on her own two feet now couldn’t even wiggle her toes. Dr. Henderson had seen a lot, but he wasn't prepared for this. The surgery was so bad, in fact, he asked himself whether this person possibly be an impostor impersonating a physician?“Death Don’t Have No Mercy” performed by Delaney Davidson and Marlon Williams, courtesy of Rough Diamond Records. Please tell us what you think about our show and help us by answering a few questions at wondery.com/surveySubscribe to Dr Death on Apple, Spotify, NPR One, Stitcher or sign up for email updates at wondery.com to stay up to date about future episodes.Listen ad free with Wondery+, including exclusive bonus episodes. Chris Duntsch was a promising medical student, with a bright future ahead of him. The friends who knew him were shocked at the doctor he would later become. Not Chris, they said. That’s not the man I know. The Chris Duntsch they knew was driven, hard-working, smart, with a twinkle in his eye. And no one believed they knew Chris Duntsch better than his best friend, Jerry Summers.“Death Don’t Have No Mercy” performed by Delaney Davidson and Marlon Williams, courtesy of Rough Diamond Records. Kimberly Morgan was attracted to Christopher Duntsch from the moment she met him. He was charming and seemed destined for great things. But she also saw another side to him. Duntsch’s behavior led many people who came into contact with him to wonder: Was he an impaired physician? A terrible surgeon? Or a cold-blooded killer?“Death Don’t Have No Mercy” performed by Delaney Davidson and Marlon Williams, courtesy of Rough Diamond Records. If a doctor is fired from a hospital, the hospital should report it immediately. That’s how problem doctors are prevented from getting hired elsewhere. But the places where Dr. Duntsch operated failed to report him to the proper authorities. If they had, maybe Duntsch’s path of destruction would have been stopped much sooner. If someone you love is diagnosed with cancer you want them to get the best treatment from the best doctors. In 2013, patients in Michigan thought Farid Fata was that doctor. As someone who has undergone emergency spine surgery, this podcast was truly horrifying. I can’t imagine. These poor people. I woke up with residual side effects, but they were not preventable. This is…I just can’t.

this is a AD out of water, no need to download, good chance you can just skip this program in the first place, lest face it if they have to advertise with this level of desperation then it usually is a instant skip.

I feel bad for Jerry but he became an abusive piece of crap to the one person who loved him and helped him and kept him out of a nursing home. he left scars on her with his damn power chair ffs. "you hurt the ones you love" is bs that should not be taught and not repeated. Abusive pieces of crap hurt the ones within reach, and this is not love. Abusive pieces of crap seldom hurt the people who have hurt them. They hurt the ones they can get away with hurting.

This had to have been one of the more difficult episodes. As much as I was feeling for Jerry and the suffering inflicted on him by his supposed best friend, to hear him and how his life was so severely impacted by that fateful procedure is heartbreaking. **SPOILER ALERT** Stop reading here as in between these sentences is the 'real' comment which is a spoiler. Jerry, Chris, stop reading. Chris was a real piece of work The real suckerpunch was how Jerry, in his warped mind, blames himself for the other victim's suffering and has forgiven Chris and still loves him. Hope nobody read this and had the episode spoiled. I did give fair warning and tried to nestle the real sentence in between sentences of nonsense (or useless comments!!).
