Description

Here are featured interviews from "Driving It Home with Patti Vasquez" (weeknights from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on WCPT Chicago), a radio talk show devoted to covering the news of the day and connecting listeners with local leaders.

Patti Vasquez is a Chicago comedian, writer, actor, talk show host, consultant, advocate, and policy adviser. After achieving a degree in history from the University of Illinois, she set out to share her hilarious observations about how people behave, and stories about her second-generation Irish dad and Mexican immigrant mom. Patti has headlined in comedy clubs and colleges all over the U.S., Canada, and Europe, appeared on Nickelodeon, TBS, ABC, The Oprah Winfrey Network, and has a recurring role on NBC’s “Chicago Fire.” When her son Declan was born with a rare neurological disorder, Patti decided to take her communication and performance experience to launch her company “With Kind Words,” in which she helps medical professionals and educators communicate with compassion. For six years, Patti was the first Latina to host her own talk show on WGN Radio 720. In addition to her work as a performer and consultant, Patti began advocating for children and families throughout Illinois and helped restore funding for vital support services after massive cuts were made by former Governor Bruce Rauner. In 2020 she ran to be the state representative of the 19th District.  She is now the health care and human services liaison and assistant policy adviser for Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza.  Patti lives with her family on the Northwest Side of Chicago and continues to advocate for her community.

We educate, advocate, organize and uplift survivor voices to protect Illinois children and families from gun violence. We've been around since 1994, and we have a survivors council, we work with those who are impacted by gun violence, and then we also have a public safety task force, which monitors the laws that we've passed to make sure that they're effective." The organization is hosting its third annual fundraiser on November 13 at Hubbard Inn in Chicago, with the theme "voices for change in the fight to end gun violence." The event will honor Arne Duncan and Marsha Lee, and feature speaker Kenny Gross from the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago. The fundraiser aims to support the organization's work amidst federal budget cuts to gun violence prevention programs. Patti Vasquez and guest co-host Dan Schaefer are joined in studio by Chicago Ald. Gilbert Villegas. Villegas discussed the deployment of the National Guard in Chicago, criticizing it as a waste of resources. "I've been on record as telling the federal government, if you want to send federal resources, you want to help us with crime, let's talk," Villegas told Vasquez. "Let's figure out where we can get ATF [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives] to deal with illegal guns, DEA [Drug Enforcement Administration] to deal with fentanyl and drugs, and then the Department of Justice to figure out, we have these drug rings and these gangs, let's figure out how to do this. But if you're just going to send troops to Michigan Avenue or along the river, you're not sending them to where people are really looking for some assistance." Villegas also emphasized the importance of universal basic income, citing a pilot program that distributed $500 monthly to 1,000 residents. He called for federal support for local law enforcement and immigration reform, stressing the need for accountability and justice in dealing with federal agents' actions.
