N.Y.C (PT.2)

THE 2ND (THIRD IF YOU COUNT THE BASQUIAT MIX) OF OUR MIXES FROM OR RELATING TO NEW YORK CITY. AND THIS TIME PRESENTED BY WIRESHAKER…….   In 1975, Connecticut-raised gangling teen-aged Stooges fanatic Thurston Moore found himself spending more and more time travelling the 70 miles between his suburban hometown and the scuzz pits of NYC. Joints like Max’s Kansas City and CBGBS. Ears and mind wide open, he absorbed the new sounds of the city: the first stirrings of punk and later no wave, and soon overcame his inherent shyness to become an active participant himself, mingling in the circles around Patti Smith and Lydia Lunch. Of course, he eventually found himself in a band which, after the obligatory line-up and name changes, ended up as Sonic Youth. And the rest is… Inspired by his recent autobiography, here’s a selection of the sounds which he would have encountered in the Big Apple.   1  PATTI SMITH-PISS FACTORY 2 SUICIDE-GHOST RIDER 3  DEAD BOYS-SONIC REDUCER 4 RICHARD HELL & THE VOIDOIDS-LOVE COMES IN SPURTS (ALBUM VERS) 5 TELEVISION-LITTLE JOHNNY JEWEL 6 TEENAGE JESUS & THE JERKS-THE CLOSET 7  JAMES WHITE & THE BLACKS-CONTORT YOURSELF 8 BUSH TETRAS-TOO MANY CREEPS 9 THE RAYBEATS-TIGHT TURN 10 MARS-3E 11 DNA-DETACHED 12 THEORETICAL GIRLS-YOU GOT ME 13 KONK-ELEPHANT 14 LIQUID LIQUID-CAVERN 15 THE LOUNGE LIZARDS-BOB THE BOB 16 DEFUNKT-THERMONUCLEAR SWEAT 17 BAD BRAINS-SAILIN’ ON 18 SONIC YOUTH-THE BURNING SPEAR

Mach Tanz!

The accepted Anglo-American critical consensus would have you believe that before the sudden early 70s emergence of Kraftwerk, Can, Amon Duul, Faust and their comrades, German pop was a wasteland populated only by Bavarian oompah bands and middle-aged, middle of the road schlager merchants as epitomised by James Last. This is an attempt to counteract that notion (although Hansi himself does get to top and tail proceedings). Here are all sorts of things you were never told about: Teutonic takes on Bossa, exotica, psych, sunshine-pop and, from Cindy & Bert, Sabbath as well as much stranger and stronger stuff. And you might also have noticed that being right-on as ever, we’ve avoided use of that rather demeaning K-word. Prost!   1 James Last-Nothing 2 Paul Nero- This Is Soul 3 Hazy Osterwald Jet Set-Swinging London 4 Vivi Bach & Dietmar Schonherr-Molotow Cocktail Party 5 Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra-The World is Gone 6 Mary Roos-Blauer Montag (Mas Que Nada) 7 Hildegard Knef-Von Nun An Ging’s Bergab  8 Inga Rumpf & I.D Company-I Watched The Women 9 Sibylle Baier-Give Me A Smile 10 City Preachers-Come Back 11 The Rattles-If You Don’t Come Back 12 Cindy & Bert-Der Hund Von Baskerville (Paranoid) 13 Peter Herbolzheimer-Frogdance 14 Gunter Noris-Gemini 15 Eugen Thomass-Undergroovin’ 16 Carlos Fendeira-Gimmi Moro 17 Tommy Haggard Orchestra-Peeled Tomato 18 Rolf Wilhelm-Do It Yourself 19 Orchester Werner Muller-Bodybuilding 20 George-Butterflies Never Cry 21 Slapp Happy-Little Girls World 22 James Last-Voodoo Lady’s Love

Take The First Train To Clarksdale: Rural Blues

Back to basics. A voice, a guitar and a tapping foot. Add a mythological bargain with the devil and you have the simple ingredients that can tilt a world on its axis, which the Blues certainly did. And ground zero was an unassuming share-cropping town situated on the bank of the Mississippi at the intersection of Routes 49 and 61. Clarksdale: the place where Robert Johnson was said to have made his Faustian pact. Here’s some of the first generation sounds which led up to and were fall-out from that encounter. Apologies for the sound quality but we are dealing with recordings made almost a century ago!   1 ROBERT JOHNSON-CROSS ROAD BLUES 2 BLIND LEMON JEFFERSON-SEE THAT MY GRAVE IS KEPT CLEAN 3 BESSIE SMITH-BLUE SPIRIT BLUES 4 MISSISSIPPI JOHN HURT-STACK O’LEE 5 SON HOUSE-DEATH LETTER BLUES 6 CHARLEY PATTON-SCREAMIN’ AND HOLLERIN’ THE BLUES 7 ROBERT WILKINS-THAT’S NO WAY TO GET ALONG 8 SKIP JAMES-DEVIL GOT MY WOMAN 9 SISTER ROSETTA THARPE-THE DEVIL HAS THROWN HIM DOWN 10 BUKKA WHITE-SHAKE ‘EM ON DOWN 11 LEADBELLY-(BLACK GAL) WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT 12 VICTORIA SPIVEY & LONNIE JOHNSON-DOPE HEAD BLUES 13 BLIND WILLIE McTELL-TRAVELIN’ BLUES 14 HENRY THOMAS-HONEY WON’T YOU ALLOW ME ONE MORE CHANCE 15 MISSISSIPPI FRED McDOWELL-LEVEE CAMP BLUES 16 MEMPHIS MINNIE-WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS 17 HAMBONE WILLIE NEWBERN-ROLL AND TUMBLE BLUES 18 ONE STRING SAM-I NEED A HUNDRED DOLLARS 19 PINK ANDERSON-IN THE EVENING 20 FLOYD ANDERSON-RUNAWAY MAN BLUES 21 BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON-JOHN THE REVELATOR 22 BIG BILL BROONZY-KEYS TO THE HIGHWAY 23 REVERAND GARY DAVIS-I’M THROWIN’ UP MY ARMS
