THE 2ND (THIRD IF YOU COUNT THE BASQUIAT MIX)
OF OUR MIXES FROM OR RELATING TO NEW YORK CITY.
AND THIS TIME PRESENTED BY WIRESHAKER…….
In 1975, Connecticut-raised gangling teen-aged Stooges fanatic Thurston Moore found himself spending more and more time travelling the 70 miles between his suburban hometown and the scuzz pits of NYC. Joints like Max’s Kansas City and CBGBS.
Ears and mind wide open, he absorbed the new sounds of the city: the first stirrings of punk and later no wave, and soon overcame his inherent shyness to become an active participant himself, mingling in the circles around Patti Smith and Lydia Lunch.
Of course, he eventually found himself in a band which, after the obligatory line-up and name changes, ended up as Sonic Youth. And the rest is…
Inspired by his recent autobiography, here’s a selection of the sounds which he would have encountered in the Big Apple.

The accepted Anglo-American critical consensus would have you believe that before the sudden early 70s emergence of Kraftwerk, Can, Amon Duul, Faust and their comrades, German pop was a wasteland populated only by Bavarian oompah bands and middle-aged, middle of the road schlager merchants as epitomised by James Last.
This is an attempt to counteract that notion (although Hansi himself does get to top and tail proceedings).
Here are all sorts of things you were never told about: Teutonic takes on Bossa, exotica, psych, sunshine-pop and, from Cindy & Bert, Sabbath as well as much stranger and stronger stuff.
And you might also have noticed that being right-on as ever, we’ve avoided use of that rather demeaning K-word.
Prost!

Back to basics. A voice, a guitar and a tapping foot. Add a mythological bargain with the devil and you have the simple ingredients that can tilt a world on its axis, which the Blues certainly did.
And ground zero was an unassuming share-cropping town situated on the bank of the Mississippi at the intersection of Routes 49 and 61. Clarksdale: the place where Robert Johnson was said to have made his Faustian pact.
Here’s some of the first generation sounds which led up to and were fall-out from that encounter.
