Description

Welcome to Dying Laughing — the comedy podcast that explores grief in all its messy, magical, and mortifying glory.

Hosted by stand-up comedian, Netflix host, and professional grief reliever Jessimae Peluso  aka your favorite “griefluencer” — this show dares to laugh in the face of death, because if you’re not laughing, you’re crying in a Marshall’s fitting room while listening to Fleetwood Mac on repeat.

You’re going to lose a lot in this life: your loved ones, your job, your dog (way harder than your ex), your relationship, your mind, your appetite and yes, your favorite necklace that your dad gave you (which your toxic ex absolutely kept).

While all of that sounds brutal, it can also be beautiful. I call it brutiful.

Each week, I invite you into real, raw, and ridiculously funny conversations about how we survive loss, reclaim joy, and sometimes ugly-cry in public. Everything deserves a proper burial - even our dignity.

Welcome to Dying Laughing with Jessimae. 💀🖤

EPISODE 18: Life Lessons From My Pitbull : Saying Goodbye to a Pet This episode is a love letter to my dog, Carlin Joseph Peluso, the happiest pitbull on Earth and the longest relationship I’ve ever had. As I prepare to say goodbye, I reflect on the weird, beautiful process of anticipatory grief and the lessons he’s taught me about loyalty, joy, and letting go. It’s funny, raw, and full of love because that’s what he gave me every single day. In this episode, I share:– What it’s like to prepare for loss before it happens– What pets teach us about love, trust, and living in the moment– Why every new loss is a chance to release an old one– The joy and chaos of owning a pitbull– And how to find laughter, even in heartbreak 💀 Subscribe, share, and tell your griefiest dog parent friend.Hug your pup for Carlin. ❤️ Learn more about your ad choices. They also nerd out on the science:– How nutrition impacts brain health and longevity– The truth about “anti-aging” and foods to avoid– The power of sleep, music, and connection in healing– And how to care for your brain before it’s too late It’s heartfelt, educational, and filled with moments of laughter — proof that grief and growth can coexist. 💀 Subscribe, share, and tag your griefiest friend.🖤 Listener Prompt: What’s one thing you do to take care of your brain and your heart? EPISODE 16: My Dead Dad’s Birthday: Chicken Riggies & Remembrance Dying Laughing with Jessimae Today would’ve been my dad’s birthday, and instead of ignoring the day—or crying into a store-bought cupcake—I decided to celebrate him the best way I know how: by telling stories, roasting his quirks, and making chicken riggies for my family. It's an Upstate thing! In this episode, I share memories of my dad and reflect on the weirdness of celebrating a birthday for someone who’s no longer here. We talk about the chaos of grief birthdays, why food is the ultimate love language in an Italian family, and the ways you can honor your own loved one on their special day—even after they’re gone. You’ll hear:– A “Roast in Peace” of my dad’s funniest quirks– Why grief birthdays are equal parts heartbreaking and healing– 6 ways to celebrate someone you’ve lost on their birthday– And why carbs, candles, and comedy are the only real grief plan you need So happy birthday, Dad. You’re still here every time we laugh, remember, and eat too much pasta. 💀 Subscribe, rate, and tag your griefiest friend. 🖤 Follow @JessimaePeluso for more. 🎁 Listener Prompt: What’s your weirdest birthday grief tradition? EPISODE 15: The Stages of Grief: Sadness & Shopping  Dying Laughing with Jessimae (Rereleased episode from 2020) In this rereleased episode—recorded just weeks after my mom passed—I tried to make sense of the unthinkable by doing what any grieving comedian-slash-daughter might do: I put the fun in orphan. This is one of the first raw reflections I recorded post-loss, and it’s full of emotional spirals, weird shopping habits, and unexpected breakthroughs. I talk about the panic and disorientation that comes with becoming an adult orphan, the grief glow-up no one asks for, and how loss forces you to transform—whether you’re ready or not. You’ll hear: Why your mood can dictate your style How grief shows up in your body Ways to connect with loved ones after they’re gone How nature heals sadness 5 surprisingly helpful ways to deal with uncertainty And how to feel grief through all five senses This episode was part of my personal Stages of Grief before we even broke down the classic five. If you’re shopping sad, crying in the garden, or trying to parent yourself—you’re not alone. 🖤 I hope these tender episodes help you heal as a part of the new Dying Laughing journey. EPISODE 14: THE BIRTHDAY GRIEF GUIDE Dying Laughing with Jessimae What happens when your birthday rolls around… and your parents aren’t here to call, guilt-trip, or send a check? In this episode, Jessimae offers a brutally honest and hilarious guide to aging while grieving. From the Ghosts of Birthdays Past (Chuck E. Cheese, roulette, and Champagne from Truffle Shuffle), to Aging While Orphaned (no backup, no birthday boxes, no one to lovingly tell you you look tired), this episode is for anyone who’s ever cried in the tub with candles and a cupcake. We also share a sarcastic wish list in Gifts I Wish I Got, and send some love to our beloved Grief Gang with a few heartfelt birthday wishes. It’s a little sad, a little silly, and full of the emotional chaos that comes with grieving another year older. 💀 Subscribe, rate, and tag your griefiest friend. 🖤 Follow @JessimaePeluso for more. 🎁 Listener Prompt: What’s your weirdest birthday grief tradition? EPISODE 13: The Stages of Grief: Pain & Guilt Dying Laughing with Jessimae In this episode of Dying Laughing, Jessimae unpacks one of the heaviest stages of grief: pain and guilt. Recording from her sister’s garage, she reflects on her own guilt around not being there when either of her parents passed, and the obsessive cycle of woulda’s, coulda’s, and shoulda’s that so often follow us through this stage of grief after loss. She also shares listener submissions about the guilt of missing funerals, making the impossible choice to remove someone from life support, and even yelling at their dogs. Through honesty and humor, Jessimae shows how guilt can teach us something...if we don’t let it linger forever. 🎧 Dying Laughing is where we carry grief together, with laughs in between the tears. EPISODE 12: The Struggle Is Real Dying Laughing with Jessimae In this episode of Dying Laughing, Jessimae takes on the messy, universal theme of struggle and proves it doesn’t have to define us. She answers fan-submitted questions about everything from navigating suicide loss, to the challenges of single parenting, to what it feels like to believe you’re unworthy of love. Jessimae also opens up about her own battles with acne, loss, and the heavy days that shaped her and finds the humor and light tucked inside the hard stuff. Along the way, her sister makes a quick (and hilarious) appearance, reminding us that sometimes the best medicine for struggle is connection. This one’s real, raw, and ultimately hopeful - a reminder that whatever you’re going through, you’re not alone in it. 🎧 Dying Laughing is here to help you cry, laugh, and maybe even heal. EPISODE 11: THE STAGES OF GRIEF: DAY DRINKING In this throwback episode, I'm taking you back to 2020, just weeks after my mom died. I recorded this in my sister’s backyard with a Yeti cup full of red wine, a little weed, and a whole lot of shock and anger. I talk about what it felt like to face my mom’s birthday after losing her, the fog of grief brain, how we distract ourselves from pain, and the strange mix of heartbreak and release that comes with loss. It’s messy, unpolished, and painfully real but that’s grief. And if you’re in the thick of it, I hope this episode reminds you that you’re not alone. EPISODE 10: THE DEATHS WE DON'T BURY | KYLE CREEK (aka The Captain) Dying Laughing with Jessimae Peluso Not all grief comes with a casket. In this episode, Jessimae sits down with writer and provocateur Kyle Creek. better known as The Captain to talk about the invisible deaths we carry: identity shifts, old selves, broken dreams, and relationships that died without closure.  We also discuss the death of parts of the self in order to prepare for brute change that comes with parenthood. They dive into the losses that don’t get eulogies, the parts of ourselves we had to kill to survive, and why trying to resurrect the past usually ends in emotional zombie mode. This is a conversation for anyone who’s ever grieved something silently without thoughts and prayers, condolences, or closure.  They discuss ego death and becoming someone new Masculinity, fatherhood, and letting go of who you thought you'd be. 🎧 Grab a shovel. BONUS EPISODE 9: DENIAL (from GRIEF SURVIVAL GUIDE MINISERIES) Dying Laughing with Jessimae In this bonus throwback episode from Jessimae’s Sharp Tongue's Grief Survival Guide miniseries, we dig into the first stage of grief: Denial. Recorded shortly after losing her mom, Jessimae reflects on what it feels like when reality just won’t sink in...the suspended state of disbelief, the way grief slows you down, and how talking about a loved one in the past tense can feel impossible. From crying in unexpected places, to realizing that “grief brain” is real, to learning how to actually listen to your body, she shares the rawest truths from the earliest days of her loss. This isn’t a clean, polished version of grief - it’s messy, tender, and brutally human. And it’s a reminder that self-care isn’t optional when your world has been cracked open. EPISODE 8: THE STAGES OF GRIEF: DENIAL Dying Laughing with Jessimae Peluso We’re kicking off the first stage of grief...Denial. You know… that magical headspace where you tell yourself everything’s fine, even when your 15-year-old dog is basically applying for Social Security. In this episode of Dying Laughing, I share how denial has shown up in my life (spoiler: a lot), why dogs are little time capsules, and I read submissions about the funniest, most relatable, and most painfully human ways people and their families have lived in denial. From pretending a breakup was “just a break” to ignoring that Grandma’s wig was on backwards at the funeral this one’s honest, hilarious, and maybe a little too real. 💬 Email us your own moments of denial—I might read them in a future episode. 📌 Don’t forget to subscribe so you don’t miss the next stage of grief. We also answer questions from listeners about navigating heartbreak, healing, and what it means to find connection after someone is gone. EPISODE 6: HOW ART HEALS GRIEF | SARAH BARTHEL (Phantogram) Pt. 1  Dying Laughing with Jessimae Peluso In this deeply personal episode of Dying Laughing, Jessimae sits down with her dear friend and musical powerhouse, Sarah Barthel lead singer of Phantogram and one of the most beautiful souls on the planet. The two reflect on how they met during a USO Christmas tour, both navigating fresh grief, and how that shared heartbreak turned into an unshakable bond. Sarah opens up about losing her father, the tragic death of her sister by suicide, and how music and laughter have been vital lifelines through every stage of her healing. From on-stage performances to backstage breakdowns, they dive into the ways we hold pain, release it, and somehow still laugh in the middle of it all. EPISODE 5: THE STAGES OF GRIEF Dying Laughing with Jessimae Peluso In this episode, I’m diving into the five stages of grief or as I like to call them, the emotional group chat from hell. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance sound great on paper... but in real life? They’re messy, unpredictable, and rarely show up in order. I’m sharing how each stage actually unfolded for me, with stories pulled from my Grief Survival Guide mini-series on Sharp Tongue, plus a fresh take on what it really means to “process” loss. I also unpack the difference between the classic five stages and the newer seven-stage model, and explain why grief doesn’t follow a rulebook it follows you, sometimes in sweatpants. Whether you’re deep in denial or mad at a bird (been there), this episode is here to help you feel seen, heard, and hopefully a little less alone. EPISODE 4: JOHN STAMOS | IF YOU WOULD HAVE TOLD ME (Part 2) Dying Laughing with Jessimae Peluso Part two with Stamos, baby! We go even deeper in this one. We recorded before the recent passing of Brian Wilson’s wife, Melinda so the conversation around his work with The Beach Boys hits even harder now. We talk about how music helps us survive grief, the real behind-the-scenes magic of Full House, and how our mutual friend Jeff Ross plays a big role in how we process pain through comedy. We talk about what it’s like to keep loving after loss… and how grief keeps surprising you, even years later. This one felt like a warm hug with a drum solo. Listen when you’re ready to cry, laugh, or just feel seen. Buy his book If You Would Have Told Me: https://a.co/d/9RCTKwS FOR MORE FUN IN YOUR LIFE...FOLLOW JESSIMAE! EPISODE 3: JOHN STAMOS | IF YOU WOULD HAVE TOLD ME (Pt. 1) Dying Laughing with Jessimae Peluso You think you know John Stamos. But do you know what his biggest grief was? Or why he secretly relates to all of us who’ve lost someone and can’t quite let them go? In Part One of this two-parter, I sit down with John Stamos not just as a celebrity, but as a human being who’s lived through major loss, public pressure, and Full House-level fame. We talk about the people we miss, the weird ways we stay connected to them, and yes… Uncle Jesse comes up. But it’s more than that. This episode will sneak up on you. One second you’re like, “Oh wow, Stamos is hot and funny,” and the next you’re like, “Why am I crying in traffic?” There’s a reason he wrote a book. There’s a reason he said yes to this podcast. Don’t miss it. Trust me. It gets deeper than you think. Buy his book If You Would Have Told Me: https://a.co/d/9RCTKwS FOR MORE FUN IN YOUR LIFE...FOLLOW JESSIMAE! EPISODE 2: THE DEAD PARENT OLYMPICS Dying Laughing with Jessimae Peluso Okay. If you’ve lost a parent or even just had a complicated relationship with one, this episode might hit you straight in the gut… but in like, a warm hug meets a gut-punch kind of way. This episode is for all of us in the “Dead Dad’s Club” and the “Dead Mom’s Club” and especially for those of us who didn’t get a trophy for surviving the worst moments of our lives. Jessimae talks about the bizarre things that happen when your parents die-the competition, the weird flexes, the dark jokes that only make sense after your whole world falls apart. She's sharing stories I’ve never told before… like the FaceTime goodbye that was anything but graceful, and the hospice goodbye that haunts her in the best and worst ways. It’s raw, it’s ridiculous, and yeah we even roast her dead parents because they’d expect nothing less! This isn’t therapy, but it might feel like the grief support group you wish had wine and didn’t suck. You in? Email us! JessimaePelusoComedy@gmail.com FOLLOW JESSIMAE FOR MORE FUN IN YOUR LIFE! EPISODE 1: ARE YOU GRIEVING WRONG? Dying Laughing with Jessimae Peluso Welcome to Dying Laughing the grief survival podcast that knows you’ve cried in a Marshalls fitting room and called it healing. In this premiere episode, Jessimae asks the big, awkward question: Are you grieving wrong?  She breaks down the weird, brutal, and beautiful parts of loss from how grief shows up differently for everyone and why there's truly no “right” way to do it. She explores the clinical diagnosis of “prolonged grief” according to the DSM-5, reflects on how long Italians actually grieve (spoiler: forever), and introduces her own updated NEW GRIEF RULES for surviving loss without losing your damn mind. From seeing her mom’s ghost in Italy to rejecting the idea that grief is one-size-fits-all, this episode is a real, funny, and sometimes haunting reminder that however you're grieving…you're doing it right. Whether you’ve lost a loved one, a pet, a job, or just your damn mind this is your new grief safe space...with jokes.  Because even grief deserves a punchline. 💀 Dying Laughing is here to give grief a glow-up. It’s the end of an era and the beginning of something even BETTER! After years of stories, therapy sessions disguised as interviews, and enough oversharing to make my ancestors sweat… this is the final episode of Sharp Tongue Podcast. In this send-off, I reflect on what this podcast has meant to me, the beautiful (and weird) community we’ve built, and why it’s time for a change. We have a new name, a new direction, and the same dark sense of humor that got us through it all. Thank you for riding with me. For listening. For laughing. For healing in real time. Let’s lay Sharp Tongue to rest and DIE LAUGHING together. New show. New name. Same Jessimae.
