Tweets from @BobDylan, @BuffaloSabres, @UnRealBluegrass, @PodDylan @NightlyMoth, @Pulmyers, @TheFM_Dylan, @Suemyassoff, and @Zimmy_TB were fed into NotebookLM which created this podcast. (Well, I made a few of them and used bits of several, but no humans wrote or recorded anything.) We've been playing with AI on a number of Dylan projects. Watch for more. In 1983 Bob Dylan recorded Blind Willie McTell, but it remained unreleased until The Bootleg Series Vol. 1-3, and became one of Dylan's most revered songs. It finally appeared in concert in 1997 where it remained an occasional highlight for a long long time. On this episode we dive into this well loved Dylan song with Michael Gray, who researched and wrote extensively about it in his book Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan. This is the twelfth episode in our walk through The 50th Anniversary Series release - we're well into Volume 2, with this discussion covering material in Chapter 6. It's deep dive into a song Gray knows well, and a man he wrote a whole book about. As usually, we cover a bunch here but the book goes way deeper. ** There is a video version of this episode at TheFM.Club website for Premium Members.** LINKS Michael Gray Website (includes autographed first editions of his Blind Willie McTell book) Song & Dance Man Vol.2 Book Website Song & Dance Man Vol 1, 2, 3 Book Series Amazon Our Blind Willie McTell: The Song & The Man Playlist Seven Days: Our Weekly Bob Dylan Newsletter EXTENDED EDITIONS To get Extended and Bonus Episodes of our shows: Subscribe to FM+ : Click the subscribe button in Apple Podcasts or sign up here. Bob Dylan struggled in many ways in the mid 80's, no matter how you look at it. We talk about the perception and reality of that struggle, along with his triumphs, with Professor Erin Callahan. Erin often hosts The Dylantantes podcast, is co-author/co-editor of The Politics and Power of Bob Dylan’s Live Performances - a recent book looking at Dylan through the lens of his live setlists, and has another book coming - this one about Bob Dylan in the 1980s. We continue our series with Michael Gray on Song & Dance Man, Vol. 2 with a discussion of two chapters on great songs from Bob's Born-Again Period. The first is Yonder Comes Sin, and outtake captured at a live show soundcheck, and unreleased until the Trouble No More Bootleg Series. The Second is the beloved Every Grain of Sand. This is an extended version of this episode exclusively for FM+ Subscribers and FM Club Premium Members. The nature of Michael’s work and writing is such that if time permitted I would discuss near every paragraph - it’s very tough to choose the quotes used in these episodes and narrow down the discussion. So for this episode even more than all the others, it’s highly recommended that you get the book and read the full chapters. Dylan & The Dead is much more than an album, it's a relationship. This a part of our 'Five Worst Years' series looking at all sides of 1984-1988. Following 18 months after Infidels, nothing about the making of this record - the recording process, the sound, the songs, or even the cover art - suggested that Dylan was on solid footing. The times were a-changin' again. Yet the music did impress some: Rolling Stone asked: "Is Dylan “back”? Again? One is tempted to trumpet some such tidings. ...Empire Burlesque is nothing as straightforward as a simple return to rock & roll form for Dylan." In this episode we look at the first proper release in our focus years of 1984-1988, talking with music writer Jim Beviglia about Empire Burlesque and each of the songs it contains. ** The Extended Version of this Episode is 55 Minutes long and available to FM+ Subscribers ** Jim writes about music for American Songwriter, Culture Sonar, and has written a series of books called Counting Down Their 100 Finest Songs with editions on Dylan, Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, and many others. A post on the website CountDown Kid led us to talk to Jim about this record. Bob Dylan has had an incredible career for over sixty years. But Dylan hit a bit of a rough patch in the 1980's - especially the mid 80s. Or did he? This is the question we're going to look at as we revisit the years 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1988 - and everything that took place during those years - through this and a whole bunch of episodes ahead on Dylan.FM. In this introductory episode we set the stage, discussing how the 1980s sit within Dylan's history and legacy, and looking at exactly what happened in these five years, and why we think they're worthy of special attention. Dylan fans have always focused on setlists, but this may be the first book to use them as a theme, around which a series of writers look at how the list of songs Bob chooses to sing in any given night or tour has evolved, the different roles certain songs have played over the years, and the larger story or message contained within a sequence of songs (intentionally or not). Another by-product of the pandemic, The Power and Politics of Bob Dylan’s Live Performances - Play a Song for Me, is anchored by chapters from co-editors Erin Callahan and Court Carney, who are joined by a baker’s dozen of other writers mostly professors, or academics or teachers or working in pursuit of advanced degrees. The result is a scholarly, thoughtful, interesting, well written and researched book, filled with essays that take a wide range of approaches to Dylan’s work and performance and live shows drill in and expand on different aspects of them. In this episode we spoke to Erin Callahan and Court Carney about all of it, both the overall concepts of the book and then briefly each of the chapter the book contains. In this episode we talk with author Michael Gray about Chapter One of Volume 2 of Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan - Yonder Comes Sin, which was just released. Much of the discussion is about Street-Legal, and how that album revealed Dylan's evolving search for salvation - in a way that perhaps foreshadowed the gospel years much more clearly than anyone caught at the time. Only one song from Dylan's 1960s output earned a dedicated chapter in Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan (Vol.1), and it's a song that Dylan never even released until over 20 years later. In this episode we talk to Michael Gray about "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" (later released on Biograph in 1985 and later on Side Tracks). The song is called out for special attention, because as Michael explains, it is unlike any other in Dylan's catalog before or since. We'll learn why in this episode. In this fourth episode in our Series on the new book release Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan (Vol.1) we talk to author Michael Gray about Chapter Four: Dylan's Use of Language: Toward Complexity. We discuss the changes on songs seen over the course of Dylan's first seven albums - from Bob Dylan through Blonde on Blonde. The changes Bob Dylan went through from 1962 through 1966 are myriad, as everyone who has listened to the run of albums and live shows from that period knows. Dylan started playing primarily covers of folk songs and other ballads, and quickly became a distinctive songwriter (with early songs including the notable Song to Woody and Blowin In The Wind) who then grew and changed at perhaps the most incredible pace ever (literally) recorded. ** There is an Extended Version and Video of this episode available. Details below. ** **S02.14 is a Pt.2 - Another 40 Minutes - Discussing This Chapter - Available to FM+ Subscribers** One of the many things going on in this period is a trend towards complexity of lyric. It's a long way from 'How Many Ears Can One Man Have' to 'Your Matchbook Songs and Your Gypsy Hymns'. Michael Gray talks about these changes, illustrates them, and highlights the most interesting of them. As in the prior episodes, we'll listen to passages from the book and then Michael comments, adds new thoughts, and answers questions. The selections for Chapter Four are read in this episode by Anne Margaret Daniel, a writer and professor and author from Woodstock NY. In this second episode in our Series on the new Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan (Vol.1) we talk to author Michael Gray about Chapter Two: Dylan and The Literary Tradition. We talk about the influence both classical english writers as well as both early and modern American writers had on Dylan, and what he came to do with that influence. ** There is an Extended Version of this episode available to FM+ Members. Details below. ** As in the prior episode, we'll listen to passages from the book and then Michael comments, adds new thoughts, and answers questions. The book selections for Chapter Two are read in this episode by Allison Rapp, a music writer based in New York. The Song & Dance Man book was first released in 1972 in the UK, and 1973 in the US. It was updated twice before, in the early 80's and late 90's - eventually growing to over 900 pages. It's been loved by Dylan Scholars and fans for all these decades - The Observer (London) Said: "A mammoth work of scholarship, often enthralling and never less than illuminating." After over a decade out of print, is is being re-issued in three volumes for it's 50th Anniversary - with the full text and extensive footnotes of the Third Edition reproduced in full.
