New Frontiers - S4 Ep2 - Healthcare - An Increasing Target for Cyberattacks

Welcome to New Frontiers, the podcast where Hemostasis meets innovation. In this second episode, I’m joined by Dr. Marco Foracchia, Chief Information Officer at Azienda Unità Sanitaria Locale – IRCCS Reggio Emilia, for an insightful conversation on cybersecurity in healthcare. Together we’ll uncover why hospitals are prime targets for cyberattacks, the specific vulnerabilities they face, and how data protection compares across critical sectors. We’ll also break down common attack methods and practical strategies to prevent and respond to threats. Tune in to discover key insights and best practices for navigating today’s cybersecurity challenges in one of the most complex sectors.

New Frontiers - S4 Ep1 - Bayesian QC

Welcome to New Frontiers, the podcast where Hemostasis meets cutting-edge innovation. In our debut episode, we dive into the world of data with Dr. Panagiotis Tsiamyrtzis, a leading voice in Statistical Process Control and Bayesian methods, teaching at Politecnico di Milano and the Athens University of Economics and Business. Together, we’ll explore the strengths and limitations of Frequentist versus Bayesian approaches, and discover how Bayesian models—adaptive, self-starting, and powered by prior knowledge—can revolutionize Quality Control, especially when data is scarce. Tune in and find out how smart statistics are reshaping the future of Hemostasis.

Clot stories - S3 Ep4 - Meet Nusaiba

I’m Nusaiba, at 20 I had a two pulmonary embolism 10 months apart while studying at university. It was devastating and impacted every aspect of my life, I was completely unaware of how difficult recovery can be and did not know anything about some of the unexpected side effects of blood thinners. Four years down the line, I have had to adjust to a new normal where life involves a lot of hospital appointments! As a young person with a clot I had to navigate recovery while finishing my degree and now working full time, while also trying to enjoy life as a young person! I hope by sharing my story both patients and clinicians will learn about the complexities of having blood clots and that recovery can be very hard but you will get better!

Clot stories - S3 Ep3 - Meet Priya

I’m Priyanka Sardana-Gakhar—friends call me Priya—a 29-year-old soccer player from Sydney, Australia. At 22, I earned a scholarship to play NCAA D1 in the U.S. and moved to Louisiana. My life took a sharp turn after a 14-hour flight back to cold Canberra, where I was diagnosed with multiple blood clots in my lungs. As an athlete, it’s easy to dismiss symptoms, and often, others do too. I’m sharing my story to make sure no one else goes through this, and to remind everyone to keep pushing for answers, no matter what.

Clot stories - S3 Ep1 - Meet Ellie

I’m Ellie Bradford, 24, from the UK. I had my first blood clot at just 16 years old due to May-Thurner Syndrome and the combined pill, and another unprovoked DVT at 24. Now on lifelong blood thinners, I want to raise awareness that blood clots can happen to anyone. Sharing my story is my way of helping others recognize the signs and push for the right diagnosis.

Clot stories - S3 Ep2 - Meet Lainey

Lainey is a research technician for an Alzheimer's and Aging Laboratory. She graduated from Iowa State University with her bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. While at Iowa State, Lainey experienced two clotting events. Lainey is a proud, two time pulmonary embolism survivor. A latin proverb states,“by teaching, we learn”.  Lainey uses this phrase to influence her personal life and her life spreading awareness around the risks, signs and symptoms of blood clots. When she isn’t in the laboratory, you can find Lainey with a camera in hand photographing pets and wildlife, or at home baking and crafting with her two labradors and three orange kitties by her side.
