The news, shared on Twitter by Europe Tesla ship tracker Morten Grove, is significant because Tesla boss Elon Musk has pegged Europe as a key market for the electric crossover vehicle." says The Driven: "Musk believes the Model Y will be so popular that it will outsell the Model 3, Model S and Model X combined – and it appears that this may indeed come to pass. Grove cites a “very credible source”, and there are suggestions that the delay of long-range AWD Model 3s reaching Europe could be a result of Tesla deciding to use shipping capacity for the Model Y instead. The same source reportedly said that the refreshed 2022 Model S and Model X will also reach Europe in the next quarter. The news is also interesting because it is known that Model Y production will be a focus of Tesla’s upcoming Berlin gigafactory, which it was thought would be operational by May." https://thedriven.io/2021/06/15/shanghai-made-tesla-model-y-available-in-europe-in-coming-months/ TESLA MODEL S ALL ABOUT EFFICIENCY"the 2020 Tesla Model S Long Range Plus has an EPA rating of 402 miles and a combined city and highway MPGe of 117. The 2020 Model S Long Range only had 373 miles of range a combined city and highway MPGe of 111." but now says Teslarati, the new Long Range is even better: "The 2021 Tesla Model S Long Range received a stellar EPA rating of 405 miles of total range with a combined city/highway MPGe of 120. While Elon Musk noted during the Model S Plaid’s unveiling that the vehicle’s dual motor configuration has 412 miles of range, the company has listed the vehicle with its official 405-mile EPA rating." Previously the battery was around 104kWh but with the increased efficiency, but this could be 2-4kWh smaller. We wait to see. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-refresh-2021-epa-rating/ NISSAN LAUNCHES NEW NOTE AURA WITH E-POWER"Nissan launched the all-new Note Aura premium compact car in Japan, with sales planned to start in autumn. The all-new Note Aura comes exclusively with Nissan’s e-POWER electrified powertrain " says Green Car Congress: "e-POWER uses a highly efficient gasoline engine to generate electricity for the electric motor that propels the vehicle. Nissan introduced the system to market in November 2016 on the Note, followed by a version of the Serena minivan in March 2018, the Kicks SUV e-POWER in June 2020, the new version of the Note in December 2020 featuring the second-generation e-POWER system, and a version of the Qashqai in Europe in February 2021." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/06/20210615-epower.html PEUGEOT OPENS ORDER BOOKS FOR E-RIFTERPEUGEOT has opened the order books for its all-new e-Rifter, one of the latest models to join PEUGEOT’s growing range of zero emissions vehicles. Customers can place orders from now, with first deliveries expected in November 2021. The PEUGEOT e-Rifter is available in two trim levels, with prices starting from £30,375*. Unveiled earlier this year, the all-new PEUGEOT e-Rifter is built on PEUGEOT’s multi-energy EMP2 platform with a 100kw (136hp) electric powertrain capable of up to 260Nm of torque. One of the latest models to form part of PEUGEOT’s electrification strategy, the e-Rifter is launched as the brand continues its work to offer an electrified variant for every vehicle in its range by 2025. The new PEUGEOT e-Rifter is available in two trim levels, starting at £30,375* for the standard five-seater Allure Premium. This variant is joined by the five-seater GT variant from £32,455*. Customers also have the option of a long wheelbase seven-seater Allure Premium, with prices from £32,375*. All versions of the e-Rifter are priced below the £35,000 Government Plug in Grant Threshold. LONDON ELECTRIC CARS OFFERS AFFORDABLE CLASSIC MINI ELECTRIC CONVERSION"What LEC offers is a £25,000 electric conversion, excluding the cost of the actual Mini itself. So you have to source your own classic Mini and LEC will then convert the entire car over to an electric powertrain. For that £25,000 starting price, you get a very small 20 kWh battery pack and a 107 horsepower electric motor from a first-gen Nissan Leaf." writes BMW Blog: "If you want a longer range, you can pay a bit extra for a 25 kWh battery (£27,000) or a 30 kWh battery (£30,000). LEC will even fit a 40 kWh battery but it’s a special order because the rear seats have to be removed, to fit the massive battery pack." AutoExpress says: "The electric motor was also sourced from the previous-generation Nissan Leaf, and occupies the same space under the bonnet as the old A-Series engine. It also has the same 107bhp output as the Mk1 Leaf, giving it around twice as much power as a standard Mini. Over the next four years, LEC will expand its roster of classic car conversions, with kits for the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, the Ford Anglia and Lincoln Continental Convertible. By 2025, the firm aims to complete 1,000 conversions from its London workshop." https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/06/14/london-electric-cars-offers-affordable-classic-mini-electric-conversion/ https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mini/355232/lec-launches-affordable-ev-conversion-classic-mini MEET THE WORLD’S FIRST 16 TONNE ELECTRIC TRUCK"There were 10 million electric cars on the world’s roads at the end of 2020 as registrations soared by 41% in just one year. But when it comes to hauling heavy loads, most of the world’s trucks still run on diesel. But that’s starting to change with the introduction in Germany of the world’s first 16 tonne all-electric truck. The Volta Zero has already been demonstrated in France, Italy and Spain. It’s due to enter service by the end of this year." says World Economic Forum: "Electrifying truck fleets will have a positive impact on urban air quality. According to the United Nations, nine out of 10 of us breathe polluted air. Air quality is at its worst in city centres. The 96 entries in the global league table of the worst air quality locations are all cities. Recent research shows 3.4 early deaths are caused by outdoor air pollution every year. The driver sits in the centre of the cab at low-level to mirror the eyeline of pedestrians and car drivers. Conventional truck blindpots are eliminated by what the makers call a “glasshouse-style cab” with 220⁰ visibility, supplemented by cameras in place of conventional mirrors." https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2021/06/electric-truck-cut-city-air-pollution/ GEELY'S EV BRAND ZEEKR SELLS OUT OF DELIVERABLE CARS FOR THIS YEAR"Zeekr, a new premium electric vehicle (EV) brand launched this year by Geely (GEELY.UL), has sold out of deliveries for this year, Chief Executive An Conghui said on Tuesday." according to Reuters: "Geely, the owner of Volvo Cars, in April launched Zeekr to target growing Chinese demand for premium EVs that has boosted sales for Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and Chinese peer Nio Inc (NIO.N).  Executives said that Zeekr would use a direct sales model to manage pricing and inventory. The brand plans to open more than 100 stores this year. Geely is making Zeekr 001 cars in China's eastern city of Ningbo. https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/geelys-ev-brand-zeekr-sells-out-deliverable-cars-this-year-2021-06-15/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What’s the best way to navigate an EV journey and charge on the way? Approximately two days later, on June 12, Unplugged Performance debuted its race-prepped Model S Plaid that's set to compete at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (with our resident pro racing driver, Randy Pobst, behind the wheel). " says Motor Trend: "The interior is almost completely stripped out. After ditching items such as the car's airbags, a center console, and door panels, Unplugged Performance fits this tri-motor Tesla with a roll cage and a racing seat with six-point racing belts. The body is stock except for a huge front splitter and a gigantic adjustable rear wing. Likewise, the Plaid racer retains its factory air springs, however, it employs custom Unplugged Performance/Bilstein dampers and a three-way adjustable rear anti-roll bar. The car rides on Yokohama Advan slicks on custom forged aluminum wheels." https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesla-model-s-plaid-pikes-peak-race/ ADL presents EV Bus For U.S."Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL), a subsidiary of NFI Group (NFI), unveiled its first all-electric three-axle double-deck bus for North America. Following trials with select transit operators, the vehicle is now launching on the broader North American markets." says electrive.com: "The 45-foot Enviro500EV CHARGE has a passenger capacity of up to 82 seats, including 53 on the upper deck. An electric portal axle with hub motors provides propulsion with 2×125kW peak power output. The battery capacity of the Enviro500EV Charge stands at 648 kWh of energy storage integrated “in the chassis and the rear of the vehicle for a low centre of gravity and great stability”. Charging can be done via industry-standard CCS1" https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/13/adl-presents-triple-axle-double-decker-bus-for-north-america/ BYD’s electric school bus will feed electricity back to classrooms"Chinese EV automaker BYD officially introduced its new electric Type D school bus, available in the US in lengths of 10.6, 11.6, and 12 meters, and capable of carrying up to 84 passengers. Most notably, the school bus enables bi-directional charging. According to the company, the bus can be charged overnight when energy demand is low, and feed clean energy back to the school during school hours" says The Next Web: "The bus features a lithium iron phosphate battery and has a range of roughly 250 kilometers on a single charge. That’s 57km more than the electric school buses of Blue Bird Corporation, one of the biggest industry players, can go. Although it’s unclear when and where BYD’s new ebuses will debut, the announcement comes in perfect sync with President Biden’s EV infrastructure scheme" https://thenextweb.com/news/byds-electric-school-bus-feed-electricity-back-classrooms UK in talks with 6 firms to build gigafactories"Britain is in talks with six companies for building gigafactories to produce electric vehicle batteries, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing people briefed on the discussions." reports Reuters today: "Ford Motor Co (F.N), Nissan Motor Co Ltd (7201.T), LG Corp (003550.KS), Samsung (005930.KS) and start-ups Britishvolt and InoBat Auto are in talks with the British government or local authorities about locations for potential factories and financial support, according to the report. The British government's plan to prohibit the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and hybrids by 2035 will require the country's vehicle plants to shift to producing electric models." https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/britain-talks-with-6-firms-about-building-gigafactories-ev-batteries-ft-2021-06-16/ Russian Government Increases Investment for Electric Vehicles."The Russian government plans to invest 777 billion rubles ($10.5 billion) into electric and hydrogen vehicle development by 2030, according to documents obtained by the Vedomosti news outlet." says The Moscow Times: "In the next nine years Russia’s electric vehicle (EV) share of the auto market could grow from 0.05% to 15%, officials at the Ministry of Economic Development said. By 2030 there could be 1.5 million EVs on Russian roads, supported by 20,000 new charging stations, according to the plan." https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2021/06/01/russian-government-increases-investment-for-electric-vehicles-a74067 Tesla desperately needs a No. 2 for Elon Musk"While Musk is not likely to step aside at Tesla (TSLA) anytime soon, it's evident he has many more interests — some would call them distractions — beyond electric vehicles. He's been obsessed with cryptocurrencies, especially dogecoin" says CNN Business: "It makes no sense for Tesla to be essentially a one-man show while SpaceX has an extremely adept COO in Gwynne Shotwell, one of that company's first hires, who is capable of stepping in to lead if Musk were unable to do so. Why doesn't Musk have someone like Shotwell at Tesla? Tesla has suffered a bit of a brain drain over the past few years, with several high-profile executives leaving. Most recent, and most alarming to Tesla investors, is this week's departure of Jerome Guillen. The nearly 11-year Tesla veteran had been running the trucking division and previously served in many roles, including president of the automotive division and program director on Tesla's Model S sedan. David Whiston, an auto analyst at Morningstar, said in an email to CNN Business that the only executive left who might make sense as a Musk successor is Andrew "Drew" Baglino, Tesla's senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering, who has been with the company since 2006." QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS RAJEEV NARAYANMy Volt makes a strange ethereal moaning sound at low speed, that I am not a fan of.. That being said I understand that regulations mandating these low speed sounds are increasing. It would be interesting if these could be changed, downloaded, or even self made like ringtones today. Perhaps you could even decide which one gets played based on GPS location. As for sounds at higher speeds- I am not a fan of that, one of the things I enjoy about my EV is the quiet ride, thst being said I can see a similar market for customizable / downloaded high-speed sounds- “Ferrari” or “spaceship” may be interesting.  LIAM FROM OHIOI am not an EV owner but, I think car manufacturers should just put a microphone under the hood of their EVs,✝ and pump the motor sounds through the interior (and exterior) speakers. (Of course with adjustable volume.) I love the sound of motor whine! Have you heard how cool the EV1 sounded even without fake motor sounds?* Regarding my opinion fake motor sounds, Porsche, Audi, and Jaguar have nailed it in my opinion! Although, I don’t really care for the fake sounds that the e-Golf and Mach-E make when accelerating, as they sound too much like combustion engine sounds. JAMES COYLEI have to agree the Zoe Pedestrian noise, is really is annoying BUT it does come in really useful when driving in busy town areas with lots of people walking around, HOWEVER the button to turn it on/off is in a really awkward place, and you cant turn it on, for instance when reversing, only off. EG: if there was a button to turn it on, on the steering wheel you could click it on and off at will, I'm most cautious when silently reversing slowly out of a super market car parking space, you cant turn it on, it refuses to make any noise whilst reversing, when its at its most quiet. IAN HARRISON FROM HULL•I am a blind enthusiast of electric vehicles but do worry about not being able to use yet another of my senses while out and about. So few drivers fail to recognise the significance of a white cane or guide dog compared with years ago that crossing uncontrolled roads is always a gamble anyway. Perhaps cars could be taught to notice the cane or the profile of a guide dog and its owner, then perform a beep whether or not your system is switched on. •Silent cars when combined with this fad for shared spaces is a double whammy for both the blind and even parents and small children. •Can I give a shout out to Motability UK who provide leased vehicles to the disabled. They are slowly increasing their range of EVs, including the ID3. I can’t wait to get my wife an electric vehicle next time around. STEPHEN HARRISSo far as EV sounds are concerned, they should be silent.  However, having the option to change the sound of the horn or have two different buttons for the horn, so that the driver can give an appropriate warning for the circumstance would be ideal.  The usual horn sound can scare the daylights out of unsuspecting pedestrians and I think many sensible drivers are hesitant to use it for that reason, whereas a sound like a bike bell would be enough to get them to turn in the direction of the vehicle and see what is happening.  A bike bell is pretty universally recognised warning to get out of the way.s (PEVs).  They would be an ideal first and last mile solution and indeed are plenty capable enough to make the whole journey in many instances. MARK ORRICONo artificial noises please. Inside or out. There are some nearly silent piston cars out there. It’s on the driver and pedestrians to avoid being run over and running people over. When I got my Niro in February I had it 2 days with the reverse beeping and pulled the front bumper off to disconnect the speaker…..my first new car ever and day 2 I’m pulling the thing apart, I got an ev partly for a quieter vehicle not one that was going to wake all my neighbors up when I back out of the garage. ALUN MORGANTo me it’s very clear, there should be no rules about EV noise at all. Regulations should be technology agnostic: Minimum external noise limits should exist for all vehicles at low speed. I think the current AVAS regs allowing quite a lot of freedom under an “engine like noise” are a good way to go. Equally: Maximum external noise should be regulated, there are standards for drive by noise, but regulations on maximum noise at low speeds are probably a good idea now that a lot of cars simply have a speaker under the hood that could easily be abused. As for internal noise - go for broke, I don’t care if you want your EV to sound like a V12, or your V12 to sound like an EV (good luck with that). The market will provide/decide. I suspect as EVs become ubiquitous, playing faux engine noises from your audio system will turn out to be a fad.  QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What’s the best way to navigate an EV journey and charge on the way? Speaking to a small but enthusiastic crowd, Musk spent the next half-hour running through the car’s plethora of features" said Digital Trends: "The tri-motor, 1,020-horsepower Model S Plaid sits at the top of the Model S range and comes with a serious boost to its performance specs, including a top speed of 200 mph and an astonishingly zippy zero-to-60 time of just 1.99 seconds. The first deliveries of the Model S Plaid come nine months after Tesla started taking orders for the new vehicle, which, at just a shade over $130,000, is the company’s most expensive production vehicle to date. Musk told the crowd the automaker is ready to deliver the first 25 Model S Plaid cars now, increasing to several hundred vehicles a week “soon,”" "The 1,000-vehicle-per-week run rate is half of the maximum combined output of Model S and Model X previously reached in 2018. Musk did not mention when production of the updated Model X would begin, but reservation holders have recently been told to expect their vehicles in October, at the earliest" reported Fox Business: "The price of the Model S Plaid, which Tesla claims is the world's quickest car, was also increased by $10,000 just before the event to $129,990, but existing reservation holders will still be able to get theirs for the original price. A less powerful $79,990 Model S is also available for order, but the start of production has not been announced. The Tesla website lists the estimated delivery date for new orders as September-October." On the price rise, Rob Mauer from Tesla Daily noted: "Strangely, Tesla still lists the price of the "Plaid" Model X at $119,990 — $10,000 cheaper than the comparable Model S. As a larger vehicle, historically the Model X has been more expensive than the Model S. This is evident on the base "Long Range" trims of each vehicle, where the Model X starts at $89,990 compared to the Model S at $79,990." https://www.digitaltrends.com/news/tesla-delivers-new-model-s-plaid-car-to-first-customers/ https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/tesla-model-s-plaid-production https://www.thestreet.com/tesla/news/tesla-raises-prices-ahead-of-model-s-delivery-event-tsla TESLA WARNS NEW MODEL S PLAID WON’T HIT ADVERTISED 200 MPH"Tesla is warning that its new Model S Plaid won’t hit its advertised 200 mph top speed at launch since it will need a tire and wheel upgrade this fall. says electrek: "But now we learn that the new Model S Plaid won’t actually hit the advertised 200 mph (322 km/h). Tesla added a note to its online configurator stating that it will require new wheels and tires. The indicated Plaid top speed requires proper wheels and tires which will be available in Fall 2021. The automaker hasn’t released much information about the Model S Plaid’s wheels and tires other than two wheel options. It’s unclear what wheel and tire combination is going to be needed to achieve 200 mph, but tires have speed ratings and 200 mph tires are fairly rare (and expensive). Tesla also warns that the 21″ Arachnid wheel package reduces the expected range of the Model S Plaid to 350 miles (down from 390 miles) and it costs an extra $4,500." https://electrek.co/2021/06/10/tesla-warns-new-model-s-plaid-advertised-200-mph-tire-wheel-upgrade/ And talking of range reductions, the new Model S Long Range. Elon Musk said on stage the car had 412 mile range,  which matches what they had been advertising. However after the presentation the website team lowered it to 405 miles. So $79,990 a 7 miles less range, not a deal breaker. ELON MUSK DEMOS CYBERPUNK 2077 ON NEW TESLA"Elon Musk teased that Tesla’s new Model S Plaid would be capable of running Cyberpunk 2077 earlier this year, and he’s now demonstrated the car’s “PS5-level performance.” The refreshed Model S includes a new Tesla infotainment system, powered by AMD’s Ryzen processor and a discrete AMD RDNA 2 GPU." reports The Verge: "We only saw a brief demo of Cyberpunk 2077 running at high frame rates on the $130,000 Model S Plaid during Tesla’s event, alongside a closer look at the updated UI on the infotainment system. You might be wondering why you’d need PS5-level gaming performance in your car" https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/11/22529210/tesla-model-s-plaid-cyberpunk-demo-ps5-performance APPLE HIRES COFOUNDER OF EV STARTUP CANOO AND BMW VETERAN"Apple has hired Ulrich Kranz, a former BMW executive and cofounder of autonomous electric vehicle startup Canoo, to work on its electric car, Bloomberg first reported. Apple hired Kranz in recent weeks, about a month after he stepped down as CEO of Canoo, people familiar with the situation told Bloomberg. He would report to Doug Field, formerly of Tesla, who heads up Apple's electric vehicle project, the people said" according to Business Insider: "Kranz worked at BMW for 30 years, and was a senior vice-president for around half of that time. While at the company he worked on the development of Minis, sports cars, and the company's first SUV. He also led BMW's Project I, which designed electric vehicles for use in large cities." https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-electric-car-vehicle-canoo-bmw-ulrich-kranz-car-ev-2021-6?r=US&IR=T FORD F-150 LIGHTNING EXCEEDS 100,000 RESERVATIONS"Ford has confirmed that the total number of reservations of the Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck exceeded 100,000! The milestone was achieved in about three weeks since the unveiling on May 19, 2021 (see the debut post and features here) and it's a huge success." according to InsideEVs: "That would explain why Ford is now considering also a smaller electric pickup, possibly based on the all-new Maverick model. Customers want electric pickups - surely not all, but it's such a big market segment that demand is probably overwhelming. On sale now, the HomeStation Level 2 AC charging station is Electrify America's most serious effort yet to gain a foothold in home charging, where EV owners typically charge 80% or more of the time." says Green Car Reports: "The HomeStation is part of Electrify America's home-charging business, dubbed Electrify Home, announced in 2020. The station itself was announced earlier this year, but is only now going on sale through Electrify Home's website or Amazon, priced at $649, Electrify America announced Tuesday in a press release. With 9.6 kilowatts of power at 40 amps, Electrify America claims the HomeStation can add 33 miles of range per hour. It can be plugged into a NEMA 14-50 outlet or hardwired, according to the company. A WiFi connection allows the HomeStation to sync with the Electrify America smartphone app, allowing users to remotely start and stop charging. Amazon Alexa integration will soon be added as well, Electrify America said." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1132523_electrify-america-taps-into-connected-home-charging  QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What noises, if any, should electric vehicles make (inside or outside the vehicle) Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast. And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing. Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid. PREMIUM PARTNERSPHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBYPORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATIAUDI CINCINNATI EASTVOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNELRICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UKEMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

The company is looking to expand its Swedish gigafactory, Northvolt Ett, from 40 to 60 GWh of annual capacity." says evertiq.com: "With this private placement, Northvolt has raised more than USD 6.5 billion in equity and debt to enable an expansion plan leading up to and beyond 150 GWh of deployed annual production capacity in Europe by 2030. In addition, Northvolt has to date secured in excess of USD 27 billion worth of contracts from key customers, including BMW, Fluence, Scania and Volkswagen" Recharge reports: "VW said it is contributing $620m in the financing round, and thus will maintain a 20% stake in Northvolt. The carmaker had already invested about €900m ($1.1bn) in Northvolt in 2019, and has a seat on the battery cell specialist's board of directors. In order to meet its ambitious 2030 capacity target, Northvolt plans to build at least two more gigafactories in Europe over the coming decade, and is actively exploring the possibility of building one of these in Germany, the core of the continent’s car manufacturing sector." chief executive Peter Carlsson: "We have been producing cells at our cell industrialisation facility, Northvolt Labs, for more than a year and are excited to now bring the knowledge and technology we have developed to the north and start large-scale production, https://evertiq.com/news/50151 https://www.rechargenews.com/energy-transition/world-s-greenest-battery-vw-backed-northvolt-raises-almost-3bn-for-gigafactory-ramp-up/2-1-1022422 TESLA'S GIGAFACTORY TEXAS MODEL Y MACHINERY IS ALREADY OPERATIONAL"Tesla Inc's Gigafactory Texas is the company's latest vehicle production factory. It is supposed to begin production later this year of Tesla's Model Y, followed by the Cybertruck and Tesla Semi. And now it appears Tesla's factory is already hard at work.  Teslarati shared a video from Twitter showing multiple pieces of machinery inside Gigafactory whirring away. The equipment is most likely in an initial testing phase as Tesla gets ready to start production." according to Benzinga: "Although the factory is also still under construction, Tesla could begin vehicle production while other areas of the factory are built. In May, hundreds of Model Y front castings were seen piled outside of Gigafactory Texas. This latest video adds to the evidence Tesla is aggressively pushing its schedule to begin Model Y production at Gigafactory Texas as soon as possible. It needs to do so if it wants to meet demand, as all of quarter two inventory was sold out early." https://www.benzinga.com/news/21/06/21451261/video-shows-teslas-gigafactory-texas-model-y-machinery-is-already-operational ELECTRICITY EV PRODUCTION CENTER"Renault announced a new, wholly-owned legal entity Renault ElectriCity, that groups together the industrial sites of Douai, Maubeuge and Ruitz in northern France, totalling nearly 5,000 employees. This move is part of the previously announced Renaulution strategic plan, and will enable to "electrify" the plants with an ambition of 400,000 vehicles per year by 2025." says InsideEVs: "The Douai plant is scheduled to start production of its first electric car later this year. It will be the all-electric Megane E-Vision, based on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance's CMF-EV platform, utilized also by Nissan in the upcoming Ariya model. The Maubeuge plant is not a newbie to EVs, as it has been making the Renault Kangoo Z.E. with lithium-ion batteries for about 10 years. In 2022, Renault will launch the all-new Kangoo Van E-TECH Electric. We guess that the plant will produce also electric vans for Nissan and Daimler. The plant in Ruitz will supply electrical components to other plants." https://insideevs.com/news/512984/renault-creates-electricity-production-centre/ FERRARI TURNS TO TECH INDUSTRY FOR ITS ELECTRIC ERA LEADER"Ferrari (RACE.MI) has turned to technology industry veteran Benedetto Vigna to drive the luxury sports car maker known for its roaring, high-octane engines into a new era of silent, electric powertrains." says Reuters: "Vigna, 52, currently runs the biggest division of semiconductor maker STMicroelectronics (ST) (STM.BN), where he has worked since 1995 and helped pioneer the sensors first used in iPhones to rotate the screen by turning the handset. Vigna's appointment announced on Wednesday shows Ferrari's development strategy remains firmly anchored in manufacturing cutting-edge, high-end sports cars for an electric era, rather than repositioning itself as a pure luxury goods company. It also highlights the challenges facing carmakers as they adapt to the green revolution forcing the industry to move away from combustion engines and embrace new technologies from batteries to connectivity to autonomous driving." https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/ferrari-appoints-stm-exec-benedetto-vigna-new-ceo-2021-06-09/ NEW JERSERY INCENTIVES UNCERTAIN"New Jersey is so eager to get more electric vehicles on the road, the state was literally paying residents to buy them. But that rebate — up to $5,000 in one of the most generous state incentives in the country — expired in December, meaning anyone who bought an EV in the past six months didn’t get that benefit. And it’s unclear when the program will resume." reports NJ.com: "For months, state officials said they were targeting summer 2021 to again incentivize electric car purchases. But here we are on the cusp of summer, and the restart date has yet to be announced. Combined with the federal tax credit of up to $7,500, EV drivers in the Garden State were getting as much as $12,500 off the sticker price of their cars, depending on the make and model." https://www.nj.com/news/2021/06/nj-wants-to-pay-you-to-buy-an-electric-vehicle-but-it-hasnt-said-when-it-will-resume-doing-so.html GRIDSERVE TAKES OVER THE ELECTRIC HIGHWAY" GRIDSERVE has today completed the purchase of the Electric Highway – the world’s first national charging network for electric cars – from green energy supplier Ecotricity. The Electric Highway has played an important role in kickstarting the UK's electric vehicle revolution since it was established in 2011, enabling early adopters of EVs to drive across Britain." says Green Car Reports: " GRIDSERVE is ramping up its investment in the Electric Highway, replacing all existing pumps on the network with new technology that features all the latest advances, including contactless payment. Last month, for example, the Electric Highway opened the first high-power charging facility on the country’s motorway network – at Moto’s new flagship Rugby services, which features 12 of the new 350kW chargers." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9167/gridserve-takes-over-the-electric-highway/ THOUSANDS OF LONDON VANS COULD SWITCH TO ELECTRIC TODAY"More than 1.6 million vans across the UK could switch to ‘clean’ electric power today, new technical analysis reveals. London has the potential to make the biggest single switch to green EVs of all, the research shows, with more than 85,000 making the switch." says the Evening Standard: "Fleet management services and solutions firm Masternaut - owned by tyre giant Michelin - compiled a year’s worth of data from 37,252 electric vehicles to discover how and where EVs could provide a real-life replacement to petrol and diesel engined vehicles. The research found that UK fleet operators could replace 40 per cent of their current vehicles with electric alternatives today, with no daytime charging required. This transition from ICE fleets to EVs could reduce harmful emissions by 8.3 million tons of CO2 a year, according to Masternaut." https://www.standard.co.uk/tech/london-vans-electric-vehicles-switch-green-b939571.html TURNING DIESEL INTO ELECTRIC"Five years after the demise of Australian vehicle manufacturing in Adelaide, a growing number of businesses are retrofitting diesel light vehicles into custom electric vehicles (EVs) in Australia for use in underground mines." reports ABC: "Victoria-based mining supplier Safescape began developing its own EV in 2018. GB Auto signed a deal last year to retrofit 2000 LandCruisers into EVs at their facility in Orange, NSW. Zero Automotive manufactures a "whole modular [electric] platform" for their own version in Adelaide. Murray Engineering will start manufacturing electric LandCruisers as well as underground-ready DC vehicle chargers in Pinjarra, WA, later this year. It's pretty well going to be forced upon people to run electric vehicles [underground] because the vent flow in the mine is paramount. If you're counting light vehicles in the vent flow — five diesels and you have to take one truck out so all of a sudden it becomes a big cost issue."" https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-06-09/underground-electric-vehicles-australian-manufacturing/100198802 SOLARWATT TEAMS UP WITH BMW TO LAUNCH MODULAR BATTERY PRODUCT"German PV manufacturer Solarwatt has today (9 June) unveiled a new battery storage product developed in collaboration with BMW. One in five claim the increase of home working has influenced their plans. Upfront costs and operational challenges remain a barrier to widespread adoption of home charging" says thisismoney: "The news comes after it was revealed UK businesses plan to invest £15.8billion in the electrification of their fleets over the next year - a 50 per cent uplift on their spending during the previous 12 months. With the Government's ban on internal combustion engine vehicles less than a decade away, it all suggests that more firms are prepared to act now rather than risk delaying their own EV rollout." https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-9648999/One-UK-businesses-plan-install-electric-vehicle-charging-points-employees-homes.html TESLA IS NO LONGER THE MOST POPULAR ELECTRIC CAR BRAND IN NL"Tesla is no longer the most sold electric car in the Netherlands as new tax rules and wider choice impact its place in the rankings, the Financieele Dagblad said on Tuesday. In the first five months of this year, the Skoda Enyaq has built up market share of 11.8%, more than double that of Tesla, which had 18% of the Dutch market last year." according to dutchnews.nl: "One reason for the downturn in the Tesla’s popularity is changes in the tax rules for company cars. The maximum catalogue price to be eligible for a tax cut has been reduced from €45,000 to €40,000, and the cheapest Tesla is now around €49,000, the FD pointed out. Company car drivers with an electric vehicle which cost more than €40,000 have to add 22% of that to their annual income for tax purposes. The research by Altelium, an EV battery warranty provider, investigated calendar degradation of li-ion batteries - which is caused by chemical deterioration of batteries when they are not in use, especially when parked." says fleetnews: "The data found the ideal conditions for improving overall battery life is charging the battery once it hits the 10% level and recharge to 80%, instead of allowing the battery to drain to empty or zero and recharging to 100%. The research also highlighted that high-level SoC between 70-80% as the ‘worst’ position in which a car should be left parked at, as it could cause greater calendar ageing. EV batteries stored at 70-80% could lose up to four to eight per cent of capacity to hold charge at the end of one year, when compared to the ‘best condition’ observed - when the battery is completely discharged, the research found." https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/latest-fleet-news/electric-fleet-news/2021/06/07/research-reveals-ev-charging-practices-to-help-reduce-battery-ageing  QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What noises, if any, should electric vehicles make (inside or outside the vehicle) Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.

That makes it the best-selling EV in the country, outperforming Tesla's Model 3 and others." says greenboz.com: "Young families are buying the car because at around $5,000 it's cheap, it's easy to drive, park and charge, and it's fun to personalize with a Crayola box of color options and stickers from the likes of Pokemon and Hello Kitty. The car is reportedly ubiquitous in the Chinese city of Liuzhou, which has chargers all over the place; the city offers free parking and charging to support the growing EV market. Along with China, European cities historically have been eager to support pint-sized vehicles for urban living. But major European automakers aren't yet embracing the ultra-cheap EVs being sold in China. No need, as Plaid is just so good. "Previously, Tesla and Musk promised fans the tri-motor, Plaid Plus version of their new Model S would give drivers 1,100 horsepower, 520 miles of range on a fully charged battery, and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds." says CNBC: "In March, Tesla raised the price of the Model S Plaid Plus by $10,000 bringing it to about $150,000. The option to order the Model S Plaid Plus variant was removed from Tesla’s website around the last week of May, according to a CNET report. The remaining high-end version of the Model S Plaid will cost around $119,900 and feature a 390-mile range battery, with 1,020 horsepower and acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour in two seconds, among other features." The unveiling is 10th June. Will there be a surprise? Some people speculate because the Roadster 2 has been extended to 11th June at the Petersen Museum, that's the surprise.  "It’s available to order in the UK now for £110,980, but while Musk has reiterated that first deliveries will take place later this month, British buyers will have to wait until the end of 2022 for their cars according to Tesla’s UK configurator." said Autoexpress: "The Plaid+ variant would have lined up as a long-range version of the car, with the same performance specs, but with up to 520 miles of running on a full battery. It was priced at £139,980. Like most car manufacturers, Tesla is being affected by the global semiconductor shortage. In an earnings call on 26 April, Musk called the shortage “a huge problem.” " Do we need Plaid+? Thanks to a second electric motor on the front axle, it transmits power to the road via all-wheel drive. The two motors have a combined output of 195 kW.  The 80x is mainly driven by a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PSM) on the rear axle, which delivers an output of 150 kW.  An asynchronous motor, designed with a pulse inverter and a single-speed gearbox in a coaxial arrangement, is used at the front. This has an output of 80 kW.  Asynchronous motors are characterised by a short-term overload capability and low drag losses. They are thus perfect for short-term boosts. The ENYAQ SPORTLINE iV 80x is powered by a 82 kWh battery and can cover more than 500 km*** in the WLTP cycle. Fiat CEO Olivier François has already confirmed that a hotter electrified Abarth version is in the works, but now we have confirmation that far more electrification will enter Fiat's lineup. In fact, the Italian brand intends to go completely electric before the end of this decade." according to Motor1.com: "As for Fiat's electric ambitions, though the 500e looks quite similar to internal-combustion-powered versions of the iconic small car, it's actually the first car from the brand built from the ground-up to be an EV. Manufactured in Turin, Italy, the 500e features a 42 kWh battery powering a single electric motor good for 118 bhp (88 kilowatts). According to Chief Technology Officer Thomas Schmall, this does not involve individual plants but the entire cell business." reports electrive: "By 2030, Volkswagen plans to build six new giga-factories for cell production with its partners in Europe alone, at a cost in the double-digit billions, as the Group announced at its Power Day in March. According to [Chief Technology Officer Thomas Schmall] Schmall, this is enough to equip more than five million cars with batteries. For China and the plants on the American continent in the USA and Mexico, further factories would probably be added if VW also wants to rely on the standard battery cell there. https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/01/volkswagen-considers-an-ipo-for-their-battery-division/ UK FIRM'S UNIQUE EV DESIGN COULD BOOST RANGE BY 30%"A London-based start-up has revealed an innovative electric car design solution that, it says, could allow for 30% more range per charge.  Page-Roberts, founded in 2019, aims to "dramatically upscale EV efficiencies with cutting-edge engineering solutions that deliver design elegance." says Autocar: ""Pointing to the added height, extended wheelbase and "structural complexities" of a conventional 'skateboard' arrangement, Page-Roberts posits that a vertically oriented power pack could improve the design, user experience and manufacturing cost of electric cars. The battery would be positioned between two rows of opposite-facing seats, in an arrangement that, Page-Roberts claims, is "far more compact" than existing designs. It would also allow the car to sit lower, be more aerodynamically efficient and weigh less." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry-news-manufacturing/uk-firms-unique-ev-design-could-boost-range-30 VOLKSWAGEN TAKING OVER A GREEK ISLAND WITH ITS EVS, GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS THE MOVE"Late last year, Volkswagen announced it would be “investing” in the Greek island of Astypalea by converting the island's mobility infrastructure from ICEs to EVs. With around 1,500 ICE vehicles on the island, there was no odor of eco-friendly goodness." says autoevolution: "The five-year plan is meant to transform Astypalea into the first “smart and sustainable island” among the Greek provinces and act as an example for the rest of Greece. It's also a platform for study, helping Volkswagen understand a myriad of factors that will surely affect a transition to an electric society.  Astypalea is currently a mostly diesel-driven island, as very few alternative energy sources have been set up except generators. The Japanese carmaker is pinning hopes on the Ariya, its first all-electric crossover SUV, to pep up its EV range." says Nikkei Asia: "Nissan said it would also do more to attract customers unfamiliar with electric vehicles, opening a website on Friday to allow Ariya preordering and virtual driving using augmented reality technology. Nissan's chief operating officer, Ashwani Gupta, told Nikkei Asia in a recent interview that the Japanese carmaker is set to share close to 70% of key EV components with its alliance partners, France's Renault and Japan's Mitsubishi Motors, to lower EV production cost." https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/Nissan-launches-flagship-Ariya-EV-in-Japan NISSAN POSTPONES ‘ARIYA’ LAUNCH DUE TO LACK OF CHIPS"Nissan is postponing the market launch of its new electric model Ariya by several months due to the ongoing chip shortage. The Japanese domestic market is to be served first, so an export to Europe in 2021 seems rather unlikely." according to electrive: "When the Ariya was first unveiled in July last year, Nissan had announced that it would be on the market in mid-2021. Now the company announced that only a limited edition of the Ariya will be available for launch in Japan from “this winter”, for which pre-orders are now opening there. Reservations for the Ariya in Europe, the USA and China will be possible “later this year”. Nissan does not reveal when exactly deliveries to export markets are to start. That Nissan has chosen to start with the simplest model rather than the top-of-the-line four-wheeler in the face of the chip shortage is likely due precisely to the lack of semiconductors: The smaller battery with fewer modules requires fewer electronics" https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/04/nissan-postpones-ariya-launch-due-to-lack-of-chips/ EV STARTUPS RACE FOR A 'GOLDEN TICKET' ORDER"The future of a bevy of commercial EV startups seeking investor capital through blank-check IPOs rests largely in the hands of a small group of big companies such as UPS, FedEx, DHL and Amazon. With each carrier having tens of thousands of vehicles in its global fleet, an order from a package delivery giant can launch a startup on the road to manufacturing scale and profitability, and serve as a marketing tool to win orders from other big customers." reports Autmotive News: " Some startups already have their golden ticket. Arrival, which went public via a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), has an order for up to 10,000 vans from UPS. The Arrival electric test van decked out in UPS' distinct brown livery is popular with drivers at the package delivery giant's facility in London's Kentish Town district. During a demonstration of the van by Luke Wake, UPS vice president of maintenance and engineering, several drivers asked: "When can we drive one?" The van's battery pack will allow UPS to add automatic doors for drivers and LED lights in the back to help drivers find packages more quickly. Such features can save seconds per delivery -- which add up as UPS delivers 2 billion packages annually." https://www.autonews.com/manufacturing/ev-startups-race-golden-ticket-order TEXAS BID TO IMPOSE SPECIAL STATE TAX ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES FAILS — FOR NOW"An effort to impose what amounts to a special state tax on electric vehicles fell short of the finish line in the recently concluded legislative session, although the reprieve from new road use fees might be temporary." saus Austin American Statesman: "That's because debate about the issue largely focused on how much and when — not if — owners of electric and other vehicles that aren't powered by gasoline should pay. The possible fees are likely to come up again in 2023 during the next regular session of the Legislature, if not before then in a special session. the legislation, which would have set the fee at $200 annually for most electric cars, calling it nearly double the amount many drivers of equivalent conventionally powered vehicles pay in gasoline taxes each year." https://eu.statesman.com/story/business/2021/06/02/texas-senate-bill-state-tax-electric-vehicles-fails-for-now/7490493002/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERSRajeev NArayanI think for most workplaces, 7.2 kW or even 3.8 kW Level II chargers would suffice. In just a few hours these chargers could offset the commute to and from work also, for the cost of just one DC fast charger, you could buy several level II chargers.  If these were more common, it would make EVs an option for people who do not have access to charging at home. Ideally it would be nice if workplaces got incentives to help offset the cost of installation, and for adding solar to help charge vehicles. Some places here in San Antonio simply contract with Charting companies, unfortunately they typically charge about 31c/kWh, and install just a few chargers to maximize profits. I would prefer if workplaces install their own chargers and either provide free charging or charge less exorbitant prices. Shahad ChoudhuryWe need more, slower chargers at workplaces. My work is limited to 8 chargepoint plugs because of the grid connection, but it only takes a couple hours to charge up most EVs on them.  This led to lots of frustration and wasted time (pre lockdown) when people moved their full cars, since multiple other people are all rushing down to try and get the spot when they're notified Barry WolfFor USA: run many (at least 10% of spaces) 20 amp circuits to the parking lot, with one circuit per parking spot, using 4 conductor cable but make each circuit a 120 V circuit (extra unused conductor enables 240 V service in the future). Charging at either 12 amps or 16 amps @ 120V for eight hours will provide ~11 kWh or ~15 kWh, respectively, of energy during the work day. This will provide30 to 60 miles of range, depending on EVSE amperage and car efficiency. Either have people bring own EVSE or provide L1 EVSEs.  Karl CramerI’d be happy if every workplace parking lamppost had an outdoor GFCI rated plug socket at its base. Since were there for 8-12 hours anyway we can get a long slow charge that’s better for our battery life anyway. Ron BarberI assisted in the specification and configuration of the chargers at my workplace 2.5 years ago. One site of about 600 people we installed 14 Level 2 chargers (7.6kW or 3.8kW if both of the pair in use). A second location has about 1200 people and 24 Level 3 chargers. The units are from ClipperCreek which has provided excellent service. There is no charge to using the units but we ask people to use for only 4 hrs per session. It can vertebrae a point of contention with the number of EVs more than tripling since install.I also developed hardware and software to monitor the chargers and provide a web site for status.  The charging power is a bit low but some constraints on available power near the parking lot, but I did take a survey prior to speciation (about a year in planning) and collected commute distances and EV types to analyze average charging times needed. The system has proven to be well utilized. Michael ClasquinLots and lots of 240 volt sockets  that we can plug our granny chargers into, weatherproofed if necessary. Eight hours on a granny charger will get anybody home.  Stephen TroyerI think the type of charging at workplaces should be slow charging or bi-directional.  High speed chargers don't make as much sense at a work place because they'll run when demand on the grid is high, and because the average work day is long enough to get a charge from flat to full at a slow rate.  Bi-directional charging could make a lot of sense because then all those cars could help meet the peaks in demand and then put power back in before the end of the employees' work day so that they have plenty of power for the round trip home and back.  QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What noises, if any, should electric vehicles make (inside or outside the vehicle) Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.

Too much stick and the car won’t travel as far on a charge; too little, it will silently slide off the road. Exacerbating the equation is the fact that these vehicles are ponderously heavy." says Bloomberg Green, in a not-so-complimentary description:" Michelin, however, says it has finally perfected the mix after 30 years of tinkering with its rubber recipes. If EV ranges tick slightly higher in the next few months, the battery chemists won’t deserve all the praise; save some for the tire wizards." Michelin told them: "In March, we unveiled the e.PRIMACY, which will come later this year for larger SUVs in the U.S. That tire is bringing up to 7% additional range to electric vehicles, because it is optimized to reduce the road resistance without compromising any of the performance. That’s a technology we mastered and we’re just rolling it out. The second example is on the Pilot Sport, which we just released. It’s a dedicated tire for electric sports cars and it brings up to 37 miles of additional range, because of that optimization of running resistance." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-05/michelin-is-out-to-make-the-world-s-greenest-tire KIA DEBUTS THE 2021 NIRO EV "Kia's Niro EV may not grab many headlines, especially with the announcement of its flashier cousin, the EV6, but the 2021 model has finally made its debut. While it's primarily a carryover from the 2020 model year, a few changes have been made, which Kia outlined in an announcement on Friday." says CNET: "The feature changes for the Niro EV aren't massive, but they do represent some real quality-of-life improvements. We're big fans of the move to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as the inclusion of a rear seat occupant alert. In addition, remote starting becomes standard which means that you're now able to preheat or cool the Niro's cabin. , it does add features like highway driving assist, leading vehicle departure warning and navigation-based smart cruise control, so it's worth getting." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/best-lap-timer-for-2021/ TESLA LOSES ANOTHER MANAGER FROM BERLIN FACTORY"Tesla has lost another top manager from the automaker's new European plant under construction near Berlin, according to a report in Automobilwoche, a sister publication of Automotive News Europe. Marcel Jost, head of general assembly, left the automaker last month while Tesla CEO Elon Musk was visiting Germany, Automobilwoche said. " according to Automotive News: " He became Tesla's senior quality manager in Germany in March 2020. Jost's departure follows that of Evan Horetsky, project manager of the plant in Gruenheide near Berlin. Horetsky left Tesla in October 2020. With policy changes still in flux, we can expect even stronger growth in the second half of the year. " says Max at CleanTechnica: "The best selling full electric in May was the Volkswagen ID.4. Overall auto sales were still recovering, down 24% from seasonal norms. May’s cumulative plugin result of 39.1% comprised plugin hybrids (PHEVs) at 22.8% and full battery electrics (BEVs) at 16.2%. Since starting delivery in decent volumes in April, the Volkswagen ID.4 has quickly climbed to the top of the year-to-date best selling BEV rankings. It looks set to totally dominate the charts for the rest of the year, although its siblings the Skoda Enyaq, and later the Audi Q4 e-tron, may pull some interest away." Meanwhile in the UK: Battery electric vehicle (BEV) market share declined from 12.0% a year ago to 8.4% in the past month, although the May 2020 performance was distorted by lockdowns when new cars could only be purchased through click and collect or delivery, giving rise to variable purchasing patterns. Looking more broadly across 2021, plug-in vehicles now comprise 13.8% of new car registrations, up from 7.2% a year earlier, with the most rapid growth seen in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) derivatives." And finally, Norway from the perspective of electrive: "In Norway, 8,498 new electric cars were registered in May. The share of electric cars in new passenger car registrations was 60.4 per cent last month. Norway’s most successful model across all drive types in May was the Ford Mustang Mach-E with 1,384 new registrations. BEVs and PHEVs are added together, the market share in May was an impressive 83.3 per cent " https://cleantechnica.com/2021/06/03/sweden-continues-electric-vehicle-progress-in-may-with-39-1-share/ https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/03/norway-sold-8498-new-bevs-in-may/ FIRST VW-BASED FORD EV WILL BE AN SUV WITH AMERICAN DESIGN"Ford will build its own electric vehicle on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, the one used to underpin EVs from VW, SEAT, Skoda and Audi. However, the Blue Oval has no plans to make the vehicle in any way resemble models from the aforementioned brands - it wants to infuse it with American design, to drive the point home that it’s a Ford." according to InsideEVs: "The model will slip below the Mustang Mach-E in Ford’s EV lineup and it’s expected to be unveiled sometime next year; it will most likely go on sale in 2023. Ford plans to build it at one of its historic European plants, in Cologne, where it also assembles the Fiesta (until it is phased out in 2025)." QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What kind of charging do you think workplaces should have? Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.

In the U.S., where EV adoption is slower, the gas Mustang still outsells the electric version by nearly three-to-one." Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley: "Mach-E has been much stronger than we expected, so we’ve totally run out of stock. Mach-E is going global as we speak, but in the U.S. the wait for a Mach-E is months.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-03/ford-production-of-electric-mustang-exceeds-gas-powered-pony-car CHINA SALES - XPENG AND NIO"Xpeng reports 5,686 electric car deliveries in May, which is 484% more than a year ago and the third-best monthly result ever. The Chinese manufacturer is especially happy about the record sales of its P7 flagship, which noted 3,797 units." says InsideEVs: "The most important factors that drive the sales up are the new P7 Wing edition and the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery-powered G3 and P7 versions. If Xpeng will continue to increase the volume, it might really come close to NIO, the other well-known Chinese electric car startup." NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles in May 2021, representing a solid 95.3% year-over-year growth. The deliveries consisted of 1,412 ES8s, the company’s six-seater and seven-seater flagship premium smart electric SUV, 3,017 ES6s, the company’s five-seater high-performance premium smart electric SUV, and 2,282 EC6s, the company’s five-seater premium smart electric coupe SUV. https://insideevs.com/news/511568/xpeng-ev-sales-may-2021/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles NEW GENERATION OF MG ELECTRIC CARS ARE COMING TO EUROPE"MG has been selling the ZS EV in Europe for a while now. The ZS EV belongs to the first generation of MG electric cars and honestly I never payed much attention to it. As most first generation electric cars, the MG ZS EV isn’t very efficient and only gets a WLTP range of 263 km from a CATL 44,5 kWh battery pack. Its front grill makes it look like a gas car and suggests that GM didn’t care much about aerodynamics when designed it." says PushEVs: "MG is about to bring its second generation of all-electric cars to Europe. They will be better looking, more efficient, charge faster and have longer range. Two models are already confirmed. The two electric cars above look great, but there is another one that’ll be way more important in Europe, an electric supermini expected later this year to compete with the Renault ZOE. The new electric supermini could be named MG3 Electric." MG5AC Fast Charging: 3-Phase 11 kWDC Rapid Charging: 30 min to 80 %Vehicle to Load: 2.500 W External Power Supply Marvel RAcceleration: 4,9 s / 0-100 km/hDrive: Tri-Motor – All-wheel driveWLTP range: >400 kmTop speed: 200 km/hAC Fast Charging: 3-Phase 11 kWDC Rapid Charging: 30 min to 80 %External power supply: V2L-System https://pushevs.com/2021/06/02/new-generation-of-mg-electric-cars-are-coming-to-europe/ 7-ELEVEN TO INSTALL 500 FAST CHARGING STATIONS BY THE END OF 2022"The iconic American convenience store chain 7‑Eleven plans to deploy at least 500 DC fast charging stations at 250 selected stores in the US and Canada by the end of 2022. The new charging stations will be owned and operated by 7‑Eleven, which already has 22 charging stations located at 14 stores in 4 states." says ChargedEVs: ". 7‑Eleven is purchasing 100% wind energy for over 800 stores in Texas and over 300 in Illinois. The recent TikTok video was among a recent wave of public apologies in China, as Tesla’s legal team initiates a crackdown on inaccurate reports and false posts that could damage the company." reports Teslarati: "In his apology, the Tesla owner admitted that his Model X never had any issues with regards to its brakes over the three years he owned the vehicle. The EV owner also remarked that the TikTok skit, which was supposed to show a Model X “brake failure” incident, was for entertainment purposes only. Tesla has been improving its customer relations in China over the past months. Following the international coverage of the disgruntled Model 3 owner’s protest at the Shanghai Auto Show, Tesla established a “Special Handling Team” to address special customer concerns." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-fake-brake-failure-apology-china/ MUSK: PANIC BUYING CHIPS IS LIKE RUSH ON TOILET PAPER"Elon Musk said the chip shortage is wreaking havoc on Tesla Inc.’s supply chain and blamed companies ordering more microcontrollers than they need, much like consumers hoarded toilet paper in the early days of the pandemic." says Automotive News: "Musk, 49, said during Tesla’s first-quarter earnings call in April that the chip shortage was a “huge problem” and one of the most difficult supply chain challenges the company had ever experienced. Last month, the consulting firm AlixPartners estimated automakers will lose about $110 billion of sales this year due to the dearth of semiconductors, almost double an earlier projection. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. said last month it plans to increase production of microcontroller units by 60 percent this year to help relieve carmakers. Still, chip companies, auto manufacturers and their parts suppliers have warned chip supplies will remain tight into next year." “Our biggest challenge is supply chain, especially microcontroller chips. Never seen anything like it,” the CEO tweeted Wednesday. “Fear of running out is causing every company to overorder – like the toilet paper shortage, but at epic scale.” https://www.autonews.com/automakers-suppliers/musk-says-panic-buying-chips-rush-toilet-paper  VOLVO IS LAUNCHING THE C40 RECHARGE IN THE NETHERLANDS, NORWAY"Volvo has opened the order books for the C40 Recharge in the first European countries. The second electric model in the Swedish companies’ current range is available to order now in the Netherlands and Norway and from 3 June in Sweden and the UK. Other markets will follow in the coming weeks." says Chris Randall at electrive: "Volvo had introduced the C40 Recharge as a spin-off of the XC40 Recharge in early March. Both vehicles use the same drive system of the CMA platform, i.e. they have 300 kW power and a 78 kWh battery. Volvo has given the C40 some independent elements on the body, for example on the headlights or the rear doors. This is why the C40 Recharge is listed as a separate model and not as the XC40 Recharge Coupé." https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/02/volvo-is-launching-the-c40-recharge-in-the-netherlands-norway/  AUDI Q4 E-TRON TAKES AUTOBAHN ACCELERATION TEST"Audi is a rare example of a premium automaker that knows how to make small cars. And the most significant model right now is the Q4 e-tron that just launched in Germany." reports Auto Evolution: "The small A3 and Q3 compacts have been successful, but as the market is shifting in favor of EVs, Audi needed something special. The Q4 e-tron is that vehicle. The Q4 has twin motors, like the ID.4 GTX, which isn't on sale yet. It produces 302 hp (306 PS) in German spec, about as much as an old Golf R. Naturally, the battery pack makes it much heavier. But the official 0 to 62 mph time of 6.2 seconds was actually beaten by Auditography, which got 5.99 seconds. Meanwhile, Automann-TV got 6.35 seconds on the Autobahn, which is still pretty good." https://www.autoevolution.com/news/audi-q4-e-tron-takes-autobahn-acceleration-test-is-gti-fast-162400.html  QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What kind of charging do you think workplaces should have? Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.

It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Today we have two new all electric BMW's to tell you about. BMW’s iX - 300 miles for $83,200"The German automaker has just announced that when it goes on sale early next year, the new EV’s suggested price tag will exceed $80,000. That puts the iX squarely in Tesla Model X territory and leaves open the possibility that it may dethrone Elon Musk’s falcon-winged EV as the luxury SUV of choice for consumers. It will also compete with the Audi E-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, and Mercedes EQC when it eventually hits dealerships in the first quarter of 2022." says The Verge: "According to BMW, the iX will start at $83,200 for the iX xDrive 50 when preorders for the SUV begin in the middle of the year. That sum will get you an electric all-wheel drive motor configuration capable of putting out 516 horsepower for a 0–62mph sprint in 4.6 seconds. BMW says the iX will have an estimated range of around 300 miles based on the EPA’s testing model.  BMW is planning a more powerful iX M60 model for the future, with over 600 horsepower and the first all-electric SUV from BMW M.  The BMW iX xDrive50’s fifth-generation eDrive platform uses a 400-volt battery pack with a gross energy content of 111.5kWh and a net energy content of 106.3kWh." "The iX is capable of charging at up to 200 kW via a DC fast charger, and BMW says it should be able to gain up to 90 miles of range in 10 minutes at top charging speed. Filling the battery from 10 to 80 percent should take fewer than 40 minutes on the same fast charger." according to Inverse: "BMW is also partnering with the EVgo charging network to see charger and account status in within the BMW mobile app and iX buyers will get $100 in EVgo charging credit." " The iX xDrive 40 with 240 kW output will be available in Germany at prices starting at 77,300 euros, the iX xDrive 50 with 385 kW starts at 98,000 euros. In the USA, prices start at $83,200 plus $995 Destination, while the UK prices start at £69,905 OTR. The US market launch will also take place in 2022, unlike the UK’s November launch." writes electrive.com: " The high-voltage storage system in the 40 has a net capacity of 71 kWh and a gross capacity of 76.6 kWh. What is interesting about the batteries, is that BMW not only states the maximum charging power (200 kW for the large battery and 150 kW for the small battery) but also publishes detailed charging curves." Larger battery average of 126kW from 10-80%, or 35 mins, and smaller battery average of 96kW 10-80% or 31mins. Max regen is 208kW and 164kW respectively. 5th generation power train technology. Top speed limited to 200km/h. Towing is 2,500kg, 250 more than a Model X.  https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/1/22462746/bmw-ix-suv-ev-price-specs https://www.inverse.com/innovation/bmw-ix-2022-electric-ev-suv-photos-video https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/02/bmw-ix-to-be-delivered-from-november/ BMW iX vs. Cadillac Lyriq, E-Tron, Mach-E and Model Y"All five vehicles utilize lithium-ion batteries in their floors, but everything beyond that is different. BMW's iX claims 300 miles of range from its 106.3 kWh (that's usable capacity, mind you) battery pack. At 100 kW, the Lyriq's battery capacity is large, though not the largest, but that curb weight comes home to roost in the Cadillac's estimated mileage, which GM figures is also roundabout 300 miles. Tesla, on the other hands, does more with less, its 75-kWh battery pack enabling a range of 326 miles in the Long Range variant -- being 1,200 pounds lighter has its benefits." writes CNET.com: "BMW's iX leaves all these other electric SUVs in the dust with a combined power output from its dual motors of 516 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/audi-function-on-demand-mmi-navigation-plus-subscription/ BMW i4 Summing up the importance of this car, engadget says: "As BMW's electrified 4 Series model, the i4 will be a linchpin for the company's electric future, running on the same eDrive EV platform as the iX. " "BMW i4 is the fully-electric version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, but it has rather good specs for an electric car built on repurposed ICE vehicle underpinnings. In the United States, the i4 electric hatchback will be sold in two distinct trims, as a lower-powered rear-wheel drive variant, and a more powerful all-wheel drive model." says InsideEVs: "the i4 eDrive 40, which gets a single 335 horsepower rear-mounted electrically excited synchronous motor whose peak torque is 317 pound-feet (430 Nm). It sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds and its top speed is 118 mph (190 km/h).  This will be the longest-range i4, with an expected EPA range of around 300 miles on a single charge, and a starting price of $55,400. The more powerful i4 M50 will be the performance driver’s choice, with all-wheel drive and a combined power output of 536 horsepower. BMW claims it sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and its top speed is higher than the eDrive 40’s, 140 mph (225 km/h). The EPA range that BMW is expecting this model to achieve is a more conservative 240 miles and its starting price is $65,900" On the heat pump BMW said: "At extremely low ambient temperatures, the heat pump is assisted by a pair of powerful continuous-flow heaters offering 9 kW of heating power each. This ensures that thermal comfort on a par with conventionally powered BMW models can be provided very efficiently in any situation. The latest version of the heat pump makes use of ambient heat and heat from dehumidification – as well as the waste heat from the motors – for energy-efficient operation." "Instead of BMW’s current driver’s display and iDrive screen setup, BMW has now combined both into on giant panel, with two separate digital screens built in. The driver’s display looks similar to the gauges you’ll see in any other current Bimmer but it features more futuristic graphics, a bit more customization, and a cleaner design. While the new iDrive system is a complete overhaul, featuring an entirely new UI, added functionality, fantastic looking graphics, and a revised menu system." according to BMWblog: "BMW added Apple and Google Maps to the head-up display.  The hatchback is a feature that all 4 Series Gran Coupe customers love and one of the main reasons they choose it over the 3 Series.  Both cars get an 81.5 kWh net-energy battery pack (f 83.9 kWh gross) that’s as sustainable as absolutely possible. The high-voltage battery in the i4 is comprised of four modules with 72 cells each and three 12-cell modules. The i4 can charge at up to 200 kW, with a compatible DC fast charger. At that speed, the BMW i4 40 can recharge 102 miles of range in just ten minutes"Also: dynamic air suspension, 18-20" wheels, acoustic glazing, Harmon Kardon sound with 16 speakers, autonomous LKA up to 125mph.https://insideevs.com/news/511281/bmw-i4-us-priced-detailed/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articleshttps://www.engadget.com/bmw-i4-q1-2022-with-up-to-300-miles-range-101537012.htmlBMW i4 Prototype Drive"Mid-size saloons are where BMW’s customer base has resided traditionally, so the fully-electric i4 has the chance to attract a significant proportion of the marque’s buyers to zero-emission motoring. In the M50 variant, one thing is immediately clear: this is an EV made for keen drivers. The i4 appeals with astonishing steering precision and smooth handling, and despite the two-tonne weight there’s relatively little body roll. The ultra-low centre of gravity comes into play here; it’s actually 53mm lower than in the 3 Series." says AutoExpress: "The entire underside of the car is faired in for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, and since there’s no exhaust to deal with, the large diffuser makes use of all of the rear bumper space it can."electrive notes UK pricing: "BMW also named the prices for the two variants of the i4. The i4 eDrive 40 will be listed at prices starting at £51,905 OTR. As the vehicle costs more than the £35,000 maximum eligibility for the plug-in car grant, this means i4 drivers in the UK will have to do without the government grant. The i4 M50 will start at £63,905, while the market launch for both versions of the i4 will begin in November 2021." In the U.S. it starting at $56,395 (including destination charges) for the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 models and $66,895 for the more powerful AWD M50.Also, U.S. federal tax credit.https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/02/bmw-i4-to-launch-with-two-variants/BMW i4 vs Tesla Model 3"The i4’s dimensions, as we noted previously, are remarkably close to the Model 3 in every direction. It is 188.3 inches long, 72.9 inches wide, and 57.0 inches high with a wheelbase of 112.8 inches. The Model 3 is shorter at 184.8 inches, but its width (72.8 inches), height (56.8 inches), and wheelbase (113.2 inches) are all within half an inch of the new BMW. The i4 looks noticeably longer than the Model 3, in part due to its sleeker styling versus the Model 3’s bubble-shaped greenhouse even if the two are very close in height. " reports Brian Wong from Green Car Reports: "I only had a chance to play with the setup for a few minutes, but it felt ready for primetime. Responses were instantaneous, the menu structure is intuitive, and it’s fair to assume it will carry over some of iDrive 7’s most useful features, like wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and a voice command assistant that is actually helpful. Whether or not you prefer this more traditional look and feel compared to the Model 3’s single screen, highly minimalistic approach is a matter of personal preference. " 0-60mph, MOdel 3 Perf is 3.1 vs 3.9 sec here. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1132451_2022-bmw-i4-up-close-how-does-it-size-up-vs-model-3BMW i4 vs. Kia EV6, Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3CNET has also done one of their comparisons here too: "Every i4 will use an 83.9-kilowatt-hour battery. Official range figures aren't yet available, but BMW estimates the i4 M50 will have an EPA rating of 245 miles (the single-motor i4 eDrive40 should do a bit better, around 300 miles). Kia doesn't have EV6 GT range estimates right now, and the M50 is expected to last a little longer than the 232-mile Polestar 2. The Tesla Model 3 Performance, meanwhile, is EPA-rated at 315 miles. Real quick, a note about charging. The Kia EV6 has a major advantage by way of its 800-volt architecture. Kia says the EV6 can take in about 70 miles' worth of range in about 5 minutes, which is seriously impressive. BMW, meanwhile, maxes out at 90 miles' worth of range in about 30 minutes."https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2022-bmw-i4-kia-ev6-polestar-2-tesla-model-3-spec-comparison/QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COMWhat kind of charging do you think workplaces should have?Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.

Should you still be clinging to the notion that EVs are somehow missing something, prepare to be converted. Forever." is how Top Gear put it: "The car’s architecture encompasses a 6,960-cell, 120kWh Lithium/Manganese/Nickel battery pack in an H shape along the spine and behind the cockpit. There are four surface-mounted permanent magnet motors driving each wheel individually, the most advanced torque vectoring ever achieved and a power output equivalent to 1914bhp and 1,740lb ft of torque. A pair of single-speed gearboxes are connected to the front and rear wheels." "The Nevera’s construction is derived from a central carbonfibre monocoque tub, with aluminium subframes bolted at each end to which the axles are mounted. The battery pack also forms a structural part of the carbon tub itself, adding 37 per cent extra stiffness to the torsional rigidity rating. Suspension is of a double wishbone design at all four corners, with adaptive dampers and an adjustable ride height giving the Nevera increased adjustability within the driver mode systems." says evo magazine: "Like most EVs, braking is dealt with by two systems, with Rimac’s 300kW regeneration capability being the most powerful of any production EV, backed up by a 390mm set of carbon-ceramics discs and six-piston calipers from Brembo. The braking system is entirely by-wire, with a feedback motor built in to the hardware designed to merge brake feel from the two systems into one linear response. " "Rimac’s All-Wheel Torque Vectoring 2 system also helps here, bolstering grip and traction. The tech takes the place of conventional traction and stability control and governs the amount of torque sent to each wheel individually, with the parameters linked to seven different driving modes. These include Sport, Drift, Comfort, Range, Track and two Custom modes." according to Autoexpress: "Sport sharpens the throttle, steering, and brake response and firms up the suspension, while Drift mode “supplies more torque to the rear wheels to accentuate oversteer and help hold the car in a controlled power slide on the track.” Range adjusts the drivetrain to achieve the 340-mile claimed maximum, while Track mode “sets the Nevera to full, unrestrained configuration to help drivers exploit the car’s full potential,” according to Rimac." "Rimac has developed an “AI driving coach” feature that leverages the Nevera’s 12 ultrasonic and six radar sensors, as well as 13 cameras to help “optimize and enhance the driver’s on-track performance.” It does this by providing track-specific audio and visual cues for when to brake for, where to turn into, and when to accelerate out of a corner." according to The Verge: "Of course, very few people will have to worry about whether they can properly pilot a Nevera. The rules, adopted through a unanimous vote by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), mandate that EVs account for 90% of ride-hailing vehicle miles traveled by 2030.  Uber and Lyft have partnerships with rental companies and charging station providers to lower drivers' EV costs. Uber has also said it will invest $800 million through 2025 to help drivers globally switch to EVs." https://www.reuters.com/technology/california-regulator-adopts-ev-mandate-uber-lyft-ride-hail-fleets-2021-05-20/SEE TESLA GIGA BERLIN AFTER A YEAR OF CONSTRUCTION WORKS"It was quite a ride for Tesla to start the Giga Berlin project in Grünheide near Berlin in Germany. First, the company had to prepare the site, which started in mid-February 2020. The actual construction work, under only an early, partial permit (at Tesla's own risk), started in late May 2020." says InsideEVs: "Anyway, unlike the first phase of Tesla Giga Shanghai in China, which produced the first cars within about a year, Tesla Giga Berlin is not yet completed. The good news is that the work is in a really advanced stage. Some buildings and the infrastructure need to be completed. Then the company needs to complete the installation of production equipment.  The production of the first Made-in-Germany (MIG) Tesla Model Y for Europe should start by the end of this year."https://insideevs.com/news/510546/tesla-giga-berlin-may29-2021/BELGIUM ANNOUNCES NEW COMPANY CAR ELECTRIFICATION BILL"The Belgian government has given the green light to a bill by Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem to accelerate the electrification of company cars in the country. At the same time, the planned ban on internal combustion company cars is off the table, but tax advantages are now only available for EVs." according to electrive.com: "The planned cornerstones, which still have to be implemented in the necessary legislation, are: From 2026, only zero-emission company cars will benefit from tax advantages. New electric cars are to be 100 per cent tax-deductible from 2026. In the years thereafter, the tax deductibility will gradually decrease to 67.5 per cent in 2031.  Companies are also to be able to claim the construction of charging stations for electric cars against tax. In order to be able to claim the tax benefits, however, companies must ensure that the facilities are accessible to the public outside of opening hours."https://www.electrive.com/2021/05/31/belgium-announces-new-company-car-electrification-bill/INVESTMENT IN EV BATTERY INDUSTRY CONTINUING TO INCREASE"Toyota and Nissan are planning to invest 160 billion yen and 200 billion yen in order to increase their EV battery production capacities, respectively. The Nikkei reported on May 29 that the investment from Toyota pertaining to the period of April this year to March next year is approximately 200 percent of that for the previous fiscal year." says Business Korea: "The joint subsidiary of Toyota and Panasonic is planning to build more production lines in Hyogo, Japan and Dalian, China. Primearth EV Energy, another joint company, will increase its production capacity in Japan and China, too. Toyota’s capacity for 2022 is estimated at five million units, twice the capacity it reached last year." http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=68382 LG CHEM WILL SOON SUPPLY NCMA BATTERY CELLS TO TESLA"Currently, LG Chem supplies NCM 811 battery cells to Tesla in China, but starting next month, there will be a change to the NCMA chemistry. The Tesla Model Y MIC (Made in China) is set to become the first production electric car to get a NCMA battery." says Pedro at PushEVs but what does it mean? He Explains: "Previously, it was expected that GM would be the first automaker to use the NCMA chemistry from LG Chem, with the introduction of its Ultium batteries. The 2022 GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 will debut GM’s all-new 800 V Ultium battery architecture capable of 350 kW charging and arrive later this year. GM says that with its Ultium battery made with NCMA cells, the kWh cost at the cell level will be below 100 USD (82 euros). NCMA battery cells have higher nickel and lower cobalt content, which make them cheaper. NCMA battery cells are also more durable, safer and charge faster, but energy density shouldn’t be much different, just a bit higher."https://pushevs.com/2021/06/01/lg-chem-will-soon-supply-ncma-battery-cells-to-tesla/E-BIKES OFFER AFFORDABLE OPTION TO REACH CLIMATE GOALS"While we commit so much of California’s climate funds to electric cars it’s fair to ask if there are other options worth exploring. A recent study by the College of Engineering at Portland State University found that subsidies for electric bikes are more cost-effective than electric car incentives at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from private cars. The study focused on the greenhouse gas impacts of subsidies for electric bikes, battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrid electric cars in Oregon." says CAlmatter.org: "E-bikes plug into a regular wall outlet and cost about 1 cent per mile to operate — no need for charging stations. Compared to EVs, E-bikes are carbon crushers. Investing in biking makes people healthier and happier, improves traffic safety and reduces traffic congestion. In the future, we should consider a tax break for small businesses to purchase cargo E-bikes for local deliveries. " https://calmatters.org/commentary/my-turn/2021/05/e-bikes-offer-affordable-option-to-reach-climate-goals/ GLOBAL TOP 20 APRIL 2021"Registrations were up for an impressive 249% last month, to some 392,000 units, the 4th best month ever, with BEVs jumping 235%, to some 251,000 units, so we might be seeing the plugin market hit 5 million units this year." according to data from the ev-sales.blogspot: "These impressive results this year kept the 2021 PEV share to 5.7% (3.7% BEV), which is already significantly above the 4% of last year. There are two new faces on the Top 5, with the VW ID.4 debuting in 4th, with 10,318 units, its first five-digit score, while its (slightly) older brother, the ID.3, makes its first appearance this year, in #5. In the podium, besides the Wuling Mini EV return to the top position, after a win in January, there an important mark concerning both Teslas, as last month the Tesla Model Y managed to beat the Model 3 for the first time ever"http://ev-sales.blogspot.com/2021/05/global-top-20-april-2021.htmlQUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COMWhat kind of charging do you think workplaces should have? The German plant is expanding its electric cars and plug-in hybrid capacity to over 500,000 units as early as 2022. To further strengthen its in-house competence, the BMW Group also manufactures the high-voltage batteries and battery modules." says BMW Blog "At the Dingolfing plant, production of the fifth generation of the BMW eDrive, which is used in the iX3 is already in use and will soon be installed in significantly larger numbers in the i4 and iX. The BMW Group will invest over 500 million euros in Dingolfing between 2020 and 2022 to meet the rising demand of electrified BMWs. Along with investments in Leipzig, Regensburg and Steyr, BMW will spend over 790 millions euros." https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/05/29/bmw-plans-500000-electric-drives-per-year-starting-in-2022/ AUDI'S INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM GETS A HUGE UPGRADE"Audi has upgraded the MIB3 infotainment system with a slew of new features including Amazon Alexa voice support and more personalization options. Previously available as a push-to-talk function on the steering wheel, Amazon's Alexa voice assistant has been added to most 2022 Audi models equipped with the MIB 3 infotainment system and an active Audi Prime or Plus subscription." reports CarBuzz: "Apple Music support has also been expanded. In addition, wireless Android Auto support has been added to the e-tron, and e-tron Sportback. The move is a worrying reflection of the number of such videos that are being posted to the platform. However, TikTok's community guidelines suggest the content shouldn't remain on the platform at all." says Screenrant.com: "As the Wall Street Journal reports, lots of videos are now cropping up online of people pushing the boundaries and carrying out stunts with the Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features in Tesla cars. One individual was arrested by police for riding in the back of a moving Tesla, released on bail, and then videoed himself doing it again. As The Next Web reports, the trend for videos showing people using the Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features without following the guidance provided by Tesla has become so pronounced that TikTok is adding disclaimers to them warning of the dangers, such as: "The action in this video could result in serious injury." While TikTok can hardly be blamed for the videos being made, the most responsible course of action it could take would be removing them altogether. Indeed, its own community guidelines seem to suggest that's precisely what it should be doing." https://screenrant.com/tiktok-tagging-dangerous-tesla-autopilot-self-driving-videos/ MERCEDES-BENZ EQS SUV SPIED IN THE OPEN"We have plenty of reason to believe that the spy video here is showing us the EQS SUV prototype. The EV may be clad in heavy zebra camouflage but its headlamps and overall frontal profile is just too similar with the EQS sedan. A glance inside the vehicle also hints of the same MBUX Hyperscreen found in its sedan sibling. Meanwhile, going around it displays a lift gate design in the rear and an overall layout not that different from the GLS SUV." reports Benz Insider: "There’s no information available on the mechanical specs of the EQS SUV as of the moment, but if it carries over the trims of its sedan version like the latest Merc SUVs, its power might go from 329 hp up to 516 hp. We hope that its maker keeps up to its promise of at least 478 miles electric range for the electric SUV as well." https://www.benzinsider.com/2021/05/new-mercedes-benz-eqs-suv-spied-in-the-open/ TESLA MODEL X PLAID SEEN FOR THE FIRST TIME"Here we have two first very short videos with the refreshed Model X - probably the Plaid version. The car has a yoke steering wheel, new displays (instrument cluster, vertical infotainment screen and the all-new rear screen), 20'' Cyberstream Wheels, and plenty of other minor changes. We must admit that the new red Model X, with the black elements (previously silver/chrome) looks very good. It probably will look even better with the 22'' Turbine Wheel" reports InsideEVs: "since the Tesla Model S Plaid deliveries are just around the corner, we are eager to see some more videos also about the upcoming Model X, which is expected to follow a few months after the Model S." https://insideevs.com/news/510235/tesla-model-x-plaid-seen/ RIVIAN IPO COULD BE WORTH $70BN" A new report indicates that Rivian Automotive Inc. is gearing up to go public with an IPO that could be worth as much as $70 billion. Word of the potential IPO comes from sources cited by Bloomberg that wanted to remain anonymous because the IPO is unannounced at this time." says SlashGear: "Rivian is working with advisors, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Morgan Stanley. The sources claim that Rivian is seeking a valuation of around $70 billion, while past rumors indicated Rivian would be seeking a value closer to $50 billion. Now you can see the estimated length of time you can expect to wait at a full Supercharger station on the Tesla Navigation screen. Tesla has been showing the number of stalls currently available on the Nav screen for a few years. Now, if a Supercharger is full, drivers are shown a grey clock icon on the pin. When you touch the pin it will display short, medium or long wait for that location." according to PlugInSites.org  https://pluginsites.org/tesla-supercharger-wait-displayed-on-navigation-screen/ JAGUAR LAND ROVER ELECTRIC STATEGY"Jaguar has a new name for its global strategy that encompasses big changes to the Jaguar Land Rover vehicle lineup as the brands reposition themselves and transition to an electric future: Reimagine. " says Motortrend: "No new Jaguars will be added to the current lineup until 2025, when the luxury car brand will go fully electric. Land Rover will take a longer path to electrification. The goal of 1 million global sales annually has been abandoned for a more realistic 400,000. Overall, the automaker is going from six vehicle architectures to three: two for Land Rover and one for Jaguar. Overlap between the two brands will end; they will have separate architectures (an all-electric one for Jaguar, and a pair of flexible ICE/hybrid/BEV capable architectures for Land Rover)" https://www.motortrend.com/news/jaguar-land-rover-plans-ev-future/ ELECTRIC PORSCHE 911 HAS A SMARTPHONE-CONTROLLED TAILPIPE"Everrati, a UK-based electric car specialist, this week revealed its latest creation, a 964-generation Porsche 911. The car is powered by a 53kWh battery pack, has a claimed range of over 150 miles, and outputs 500 horsepower." says Forbes: "It weighs slightly less than when it was powered by internal combustion – partly thanks to the use of carbon fiber body panels – and can sprint to 60mph in under four seconds. DC fast charging means the battery can be topped up from 10 percent to almost full in an hour. But what sets this car apart from a growing range of electrified classics is the pair of tailpipes sprouting from under the rear bumper. PSA was further along in investing in EVs before its merger with Fiat, having made plans for a roughly 5 billion-euro project with oil giant Total that is backed by the French government. PSA's stronger sales of plug-in hybrids and battery-powered cars enabled Stellantis to exit an emissions-credit agreement that Fiat had set up with Tesla in 2019." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/stellantis-said-consider-battery-manufacturing-investment-italy SOUL EV NAMED ‘BEST VALUE ELECTRIC CAR’ The Kia Soul EV has picked up the prize for ‘Best value electric car’ at the Auto Trader New Car Awards 2021. Natural gas is used in almost all hydrogen production today. That earns the disdain of environmental, social, and governance investors, environmental groups and governments trying to slow climate change because the most common method, called steam-methane reforming, also produces large amounts of carbon dioxide that are dumped in the air." https://www.straitstimes.com/world/racing-for-hydrogen-how-gas-giants-are-vying-to-stay-relevant QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What kind of charging do you think workplaces should have? Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast. PREMIUM PARTNERSPHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBYPORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATIAUDI CINCINNATI EASTVOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNELRICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UKEMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/ PARTNERSDAVID AND LISA ALLENBOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGESDARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATEJUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYANIAIN SEARJULIETTE SODERGRENMICHAEL LUMBLEY

The car “needs one more week of tweak,” Musk said in explaining the delay." reports Bloomberg: "The Model S Plaid, the automaker’s quickest electric vehicle to date, was scheduled to be unveiled at a June 3 delivery event for customers at its factory in Fremont, California." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-29/musk-says-tesla-s-model-s-plaid-delivery-pushed-back-to-june-10?srnd=markets-vp MKBHD SAYS THE F-150 LIGHTNING IS MUCH BETTER THAN HE EXPECTEDWell-known tech reviewer, long-time Tesla owner Marques Brownlee (aka MKBHD) was able to get an exclusive hands-on experience with the upcoming, all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning. Brownlee admits that the F-150 Lightning is better than he expected. Brownlee notes that the F-150 Lightning was quoting him an impressive 367 miles of range, and it only had an 80 percent charge. Based on his math, with a full 100-percent charge, this electric truck with an empty bed should be able to travel some 459 miles." The base model is expected to get just 230 miles, though a version with 300 miles of range will be available. One of the comments notes a follow up video he posted: "He corrected his estimates because the math doesn't add up. He is saying now the extended battery might reach 350-380 miles https://insideevs.com/news/510259/ford-f150-lightning-first-impressions/ ROLLS-ROYCE IS WORKING ON EV CALLED 'SILENT SHADOW'"Rolls-Royce confirmed it is working on an all-new vehicle called Silent Shadow as the ultraluxury brand prepares to offer a full-electric car to its customers this decade. The BMW unit last year filed a trademark with the German patent office for the name Silent Shadow, a nod to the Silver Shadow model sold from 1965 to 1980." says Automotive News Europe: "Regulation is catching up with automakers, with many countries such as the UK planning to ban the sale of combustion-engine vehicles. While the pandemic suppressed vehicle demand in many regions, Rolls-Royce's production run is booked out for the year. Orders started to rise strongly from the fourth quarter of last year as the pandemic unleashed a free-spending attitude, Mueller-Oetvoes said of the company's clients." BYD DELIVERS SPAIN’S LARGEST EVER ELECTRIC BUS ORDERThe Municipal Transport Company of Madrid, EMT Madrid has taken the delivery of the 30 electric buses from BYD, ahead of the programmed hand-over schedule in Spain’s largest-ever single order for electric buses. The upshift in the delivery schedule is even more impressive given the many and varied restrictions on travel, shipping and other logistical complications brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. The hand-over follows an initial 15 BYD 12-metre electric buses delivered to EMT Madrid in May, 2020 – the first time BYD had supplied vehicles into the Spanish capital. Since entering service, EMT Madrid’s 15-strong BYD fleet has topped over 300,000 km, reducing CO2 emissions approximately by 300,000 kg. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/rolls-royce-working-ev-called-silent-shadow TESLA CYBERTRUCK RETRACTABLE SOLAR BED COVER REVEALED IN PATENT"Tesla’s plan for a retractable solar bed cover on its Cybertruck electric pickup truck has been revealed in a new patent application. After the launch of the Cybertruck, CEO Elon Musk surprised many when he said that Tesla’s new electric pickup truck will have a solar roof option that will add 15 miles of range per day." reports electrek: "Now, Tesla’s design for the retractable bed cover with solar cells embedded was revealed in a patent application released today. This is impressive considering it’s apparently strong enough for someone to stand on the cover. Tesla also explains that it can embed solar cells in the tonneau cover" "“A truck bed cover integrated in a vehicle (e.g., a truck), configured to move through an opening formed between a cab and a truck bed, and along a set of channels on the truck bed. The vehicle includes a motor engaged with the truck bed cover and configured to enable an automated movement of the truck bed cover along the set of channels" https://electrek.co/2021/05/27/tesla-cybertruck-retractable-solar-bed-cover-revealed-patent/ TESLA CABIN CAMERA HAS BEEN ENABLED FOR AUTOPILOT DRIVER MONITORING"Several years after Elon Musk said Tesla rejected eye tracking as a method for measuring driver attentiveness because it's "ineffective," owners of new Teslas are receiving vehicles with the feature active. According to notes in the 2021.4.15.11 update, the cabin camera mounted above the rear view mirror will "detect and alert driver inattentiveness while Autopilot is engaged." says engadget: "Tesla hacker Greentheonly has monitored Tesla's progress in developing the software that watches drivers, and showed what early versions of the system can recognize in some demonstration videos. A few other videos posted to social media in recent weeks show that drivers are starting to receive deliveries of the reworked Model S and Model X with a "yoke" steering wheel and other changes, so there may be more tweaks to find very soon." Slashgear points out: "The cabin camera apparently works in conjunction with the original steering wheel sensors, which is probably a good thing for reliability. The update also notes that data from the camera doesn’t get out of the car unless you actually agreed to and enabled data sharing." https://www.engadget.com/tesla-in-car-camera-autopilot-081511875.html https://www.slashgear.com/tesla-cabin-camera-has-been-enabled-for-autopilot-driver-monitoring-27674927/ ‘VIRTUAL POWER STATION’ CREATED BY UK POWER NETWORKS"A ‘virtual power station’ equivalent to the electricity generation of a gas-fired power station, is being created by UK Power Networks. New contracts for energy capacity worth £30 million are being awarded to 17 innovators in the energy, tech and car sector including Octopus Energy, Electric Miles and Ohme, making it the UK’s largest-ever ‘Flexibility’ tender. The far-sighted move is creating new opportunities for batteries and renewable energy with 77% of the capacity coming from low carbon sources." says Autmovei World: "More than two thirds of the new capacity (248 Megawatts) will come from using electric vehicles’ batteries and smart charging when they are hooked up to the power networks.[1] Flexibility providers who have been awarded contracts by UK Power Networks will now recruit up to 25,000 EV owners to support the network in this young and growing market. UK Power Networks, already the largest company to sign agreements for using the power of EVs in the UK, is laying the groundwork now for 2030 when the company estimates that up to 4.5 million new electric vehicles will be connected to the network." AGGREKO SUPPLIES BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEM FOR ARGONNE’S EV FAST-CHARGING FACILITY"Aggreko, a provider of mobile and modular energy solutions, has delivered a smart battery storage system to Argonne National Laboratory. Argonne will incorporate the new system into a fast charging facility at its Smart Energy Plaza near Chicago." says ChargedEVs: "The one-Megawatt 30-minute system is designed to enable ultra-fast charging by providing peak power mitigation and power quality services. ANL will also gather data on EV charge profiles exceeding 200 kW to quantify EV and charging system efficiencies, and explore the impact on the grid." https://chargedevs.com/newswire/aggreko-supplies-battery-storage-system-for-argonnes-ev-fast-charging-facility/ SKODA DEALERSHIPS TO RECEIVE USED 2ND LIFE ENERGY STORAGE"Skoda and the Czech technology company IBG Cesko are cooperating to use used batteries from the all-electric Enyaq iV and the PHEV models Superb iV and Octavia iV as stationary storage units at Skoda dealerships." says Chris Randall at electrive: "The energy storage system, manufactured together with IBG Cesko, can hold up to 20 batteries from the Superb iV and Octavia iV PHEV models, each with 13 kWh, or five 82 kWh batteries from the Enyaq iV BEV model. In total, the capacity of the system is up to 328 kWh. According to a statement from Skoda, the storage system can be coupled with a charging station. And it will do so without making a widely expected change to Texas’ auto dealer franchise laws that would finally allow Tesla to sell its cars—many of which will be built at its new Austin factory next year—directly to the public in the nation’s second-largest state." writes The Drive: "esla is on the verge of having to jump through the most ridiculous one yet: having to ship its Texas-built vehicles out of the state before it can sell (and ship) them back to Lone Star buyers.   There’s not enough time left in the current legislative section to advance the bill that was supposed to avert that Kafkaesque outcome. This is going to happen unless Texas Governor Greg Abbott calls a special session specifically to debate this topic—extremely unlikely—or some arcane regulatory exemption can be crafted for Tesla in the months ahead. So how did we end up here?" https://www.thedrive.com/tech/40779/tesla-will-have-to-ship-its-texas-built-cars-out-of-state-to-sell-back-to-residents TESLA CASHING IN ON CHIPS"Trust Tesla and its chief Elon Musk to come up with a big idea for solving the current chip shortage. This one would only help Tesla itself — it is considering buying and operating a plant of its own, according to people familiar with the matter" writes the FT: "A cutting-edge semiconductor fab requires investment of up to $20bn and the intricacies of operating such plants are notoriously hard to master. Tesla is also pursuing a more practical idea of paying in advance to secure supplies. That’s a strategy already adopted by other companies." https://www.ft.com/content/d94d327e-6c3d-484c-b1d0-9c0ebfef606d TESLA POWERPACK BATTERY STEPS IN AFTER COAL PLANT EXPLODES IN AUSTRALIA"On Tuesday, an explosion at the Callide Power Station, a coal-fired power plant in central Queensland, Australia, resulted in mass power outages from the New South Wales (NSW) border to Cairns. More than 470,000 customers were affected, particularly as the explosion caused a cascading impact on the Queensland grid." says Teslarati: "This was when the Hornsdale Power Reserve, a massive Tesla Powerpack battery farm, stepped in. With its upgraded toolkit that was added when it was expanded into a 150MW/194MWh system, the massive battery was able to immediately respond to the widespread power interruptions." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-powerpack-battery-coal-plant-explosion-australia/ TESLA HAS INSTALLED OVER 200,000 POWERWALL HOME BATTERIES"Despite issues with its Solar Roof, Tesla's Powerwall has apparently been a hot-selling item over the last year. The company announced on Twitter that it has sold over 200,000 Powerwall units so far, around double the number it said it had sold at this time in 2020. " according to Engadget: "It could apparently be shipping even larger numbers if it could manufacture more of them. Tesla recently said during its first-quarter earnings call that it had a "multi-quarter backlog on Powerwall." It also announced in April that it would no longer sell its Solar Roof panels without a Powerwall unit, which ought to boost demand even further.  Tesla recently unveiled the Powerwall+, an updated version that can supply up to 9.6kW of power, up from 5kW continuous and 7kW of peak output. This would apply to electric vehicles up to a price of $80,000." reports Chris Randall at Electrive: "The new law would remove this existing cap, but a different, future limit is included in the proposal: For example, the tax credit would be phased out over a three-year period once 50 per cent of car sales in the US are electric cars. Now for the proposed increase in the credit up to $12,500: The proponents of the bill, led by Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, propose to increase the $7,500 tax credit by $2,500 for vehicles assembled in the US and by another $2,500 for vehicles manufactured in plants whose employees are members of or represented by a union." Yahoo! News points out: “That would mean smaller credits to automakers such as Tesla, Volkswagen and others who do not have U.S. union workers, and companies building EVs outside the United States. The EV incentives are estimated to cost $31.6 billion through 2031, according to a congressional estimate. The bill must still be approved by the full Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. The bill also includes a 30% tax credit for manufacturers to retool or build new facilities to produce advanced energy technologies including batteries and new incentives to purchase commercial electric vehicles." https://www.electrive.com/2021/05/27/us-senate-approves-increase-of-ev-tax-credit/ https://news.yahoo.com/u-senate-panel-advances-ev-025709643.html RIVIAN DELAYS DELIVERIES OF THE R1T LAUNCH EDITION BY ONE MONTH"Rivian said that deliveries of the R1T Launch Edition, the limited edition release of its first series of “electric adventure vehicles,” will be delayed by a month, according to an update on its website." reports Tech Crunch: "Customers who preordered can now expect to start receiving their pickup trucks in July instead of June, with Launch Edition deliveries to be completed by Spring 2022. That means riding in an Air is a mostly calm and serene experience, at least until the driver floors the throttle. After my first encounter back in 2017, I was impressed with how well-built the Air was. Despite being an alpha prototype, everything I poked or prodded worked, including the three screens and their UI. But the car I rode in this past weekend felt like a huge step beyond that earlier experience in every regard." writes ArsTechnica: "Lucid is currently building a batch of 70 preproduction cars, with another run of 100 that, among other things, will be used for PR and marketing. In 2017 and 2018 it offered the Ioniq Electric with an “Ioniq Unlimited” program—focused toward cost-conscious Millennials—that folded charging costs, scheduled maintenance, and even replacement costs of wear items into a single monthly payment. Although Hyundai won’t detail the program until later in the year, there are already two key differences. This time, it’s intended for intervals as short as one to three months, and it’s aimed at a more affluent crowd—just those who want to try before they buy." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1132386_hyundai-ioniq-5-subscription-will-let-ev-intenders-try-before-they-buy TESLA LOSES U.S. DESIGNATION FOR SOME ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES"Newer Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles will no longer be labeled as having some advanced safety features after the automaker said it was removing radar sensors to transition to a camera-based Autopilot system, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Wednesday." reports Automotive NEws: "The U.S. agency confirmed it updated its website to show that Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced on or after April 27 "do not have NHTSA's check mark for recommended safety technologies: forward collision warning, lane departure warning, crash imminent braking and dynamic brake support." We didn’t get a close look at it then because the unveiling didn’t go into exhaustive detail. Now, Cupra has finally given us close look we’ve been begging for, and it has revealed a familiar design with a cool twist." reports Jalopnik: "The slower of the two models will make about 148 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque. The second will make about 201 HP and the same torque. But there’s more: Cupra will offer an e-Boost performance pack that bumps up the output to around 228 HP. The e-Boost Borns will be available with either a 58 kWh or 77 kWh battery. When drivers configure their Born to include the e-Boost and come with the smaller 58 kWh battery, the Cupra can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds." As for charging, Cupra says: "The high-performance EV can add an additional 100km [62 mi.] of range in as little as 7 minutes using a 125kW charging point, making typical journeys as simple and easy as if using a combustion engine vehicle. And even if the battery pack SOC [state of charge] is only 5% it can be replenished to 80% in as little as 35 minutes." Going inside: "The steering wheel is one of the most striking features, having two buttons for switching between driving modes and selecting the CUPRA mode, and both have a great touch. The dashboard has a very good feel and the passenger side is topped with a similar inlay. The automaker's first batch of mass-market EVs largely relies on platforms adapted from internal-combustion models, or borrowed from other automakers. But its next wave of EV platforms will bring an electric Explorer, Ford confirmed Wednesday, along with the possibility of an electric Bronco." says Green Car Reports: "One of the Ford platforms will be a mid-size platform, supporting a wide range of rear- and all-wheel-drive vehicles ranging from crossovers to pickups, while the other larger platform will be designed for next-generation full-size pickups and SUVs." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1132383_report-ford-is-developing-two-dedicated-ev-platforms-for-debut-by-2025 TESLA PHASES OUT RADAR SENSORS, SHIFTS TO CAMERA-BASED AUTOPILOT"Tesla Inc. updated its website Tuesday to announce that Model 3 and Model Y cars built for North America and shipping this month will no longer be equipped with radar." according to Automotive News: "Musk has been famously opposed to lidar technology, which uses pulses of laser light to detect objects. He’s since soured on radar, which uses radio waves to do the same thing. Tesla’s sensor suite previously relied on radar as well as eight cameras. While Musk has said for several years he believes Tesla is on the verge of delivering Level 5 autonomy -- meaning its cars won’t require human intervention -- drivers have needed to keep their hands on the wheel when using Autopilot. Tesla raised more than $2 billion two years ago after Musk made several predictions about robotaxis that didn’t materialize. Many Tesla customers who have Autopilot say that the features get better over time as the company rolls out new software updates." Tesla posted a blog update:  We are continuing the transition to Tesla Vision, our camera-based Autopilot system. Beginning with deliveries in May 2021, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for the North American market will no longer be equipped with radar. Instead, these will be the first Tesla vehicles to rely on camera vision and neural net processing to deliver Autopilot, Full-Self Driving and certain active safety features. Customers who ordered before May 2021 and are matched to a car with Tesla Vision will be notified of the change through their Tesla Accounts prior to delivery. For a short period during this transition, cars with Tesla Vision may be delivered with some features temporarily limited or inactive, including: Autosteer will be limited to a maximum speed of 75 mph and a longer minimum following distance.Smart Summon (if equipped) and Emergency Lane Departure Avoidance may be disabled at delivery." And Elon Musk posted another updated timeline: "“Pure vision Autopilot is now rolling out in North America. There will be an update of this production release in 2 weeks, then FSD beta V9.0 (also pure vision) a week later.”"  So, mid June? https://www.autonews.com/technology/tesla-phases-out-radar-sensors-shifts-camera-based-autopilot https://www.tesla.com/support/transitioning-tesla-vision SABOTEUR ARSON ATTACK ON TESLA BERLIN"German police are investigating whether a fire that broke out overnight at the construction site of Tesla's first European gigafactory had a political motive, after far-left activists claimed responsibility." reports Reuters: "The fire at Gruenheide in the eastern state of Brandenburg early on Wednesday morning damaged several power cables leading to the Tesla site and an area of around 3 square metres, said a spokesman for the LKA state criminal investigation office. The spokesman said arson was not being ruled out and investigators were examining a letter that circulated on social media during Wednesday which claimed responsibility. The letter, which was published on a radical left platform, said it had cut the power supply to the Tesla site by setting fire to six high-voltage cables above ground." https://www.reuters.com/technology/german-police-investigate-possible-arson-tesla-site-2021-05-26/ FORD WILL SPEND $30 BILLION ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES"Ford Motor said on Wednesday that it would increase spending on electric vehicles by about a third from its previous plans and expects E.V.s to make up 40 percent of its production by 2030, a big increase in its commitment to the electrification of cars and trucks." writes the New York Times: "The company intends to spend $30 billion in the five years ending in 2025, up from the previous target of $22 billion. It also said it had accepted 70,000 reservations for the F-150 Lightning, the electric version of its top-selling pickup truck. The increase in spending reflects new investments in better technology and production. Last week, Ford said it would form a joint venture with a South Korean company, SK Innovation, to manufacture battery cells at two plants in the United States for future Ford and Lincoln vehicles." https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/26/business/ford-electric-vehicles.html BMW LAUNCHES BATTERY PRODUCTION FOR IX & I4"BMW has started manufacturing the high-voltage batteries and battery modules used in the iX and i4 at the Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing. The capacity for the production of the electric motors at the site has also been increased." says electrive: "The batteries for the iX will remain in Dingolfing, where production of the electric SUV is scheduled to start “shortly”. The electric sedan i4 is to be built at the plant in Munich from autumn. At the same time, capacities for the production of the fifth-generation electric motor will be increased. This generation of motors has been produced for the iX3 in Dingolfing since 2020 and is then transported to the vehicle plant in Shenyang in China. In future, motors from this modular system will also be used in the iX and i4 and installed in the vehicles in Germany." https://www.electrive.com/2021/05/26/bmw-launches-battery-production-for-ix-i4/ EVGO: CHARGING STATION USE RETURNS TO NORMAL"This trend is consistent with data related to retail, travel, and automotive sector activity, and is a welcome sign of recovery as we emerge from the pandemic." "Over the last 30 days, average daily throughput on EVgo’s network exceeded pre COVID-19 levels from late 2019 and early 2020. Further supporting the positive economic trajectory, EVgo recently announced achieving more than 250,000 customers on its charging network nationwide." NISSAN SAID TO BE IN TALKS TO BUILD BATTERY PLANT IN UK"Car giant Nissan is said to be in advanced negotiations with the UK government to build a huge electric car battery plant as part of an official push to make Britain the company’s largest electric vehicles (EVs) production hub outside Japan." says mining.com: "The potential factory, which would be built on the existing Sunderland site, is expected to support the production of 200,000 batteries a year and provide thousands of jobs,  FT reported." https://www.mining.com/nissan-in-alleged-talks-to-build-battery-factory-in-the-uk/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Do you have an opinion on hydrogen power for personal transport? The Ford F250 sounds like a hybrid bus, uses the electric when off throttle, at a standstill, and starting again on light throttle. Great for not polluting at bus stops. Ford will be great in busy cities, no benefit at all on highways, except maybe long downhills.
