Silva Kaputikyan (1919-2006): Soviet Armenian poet and political activist. She was one of the leading intellectuals of the 1988 Karabakh Movement. 2004 protests: During the 2003 presidential election in Armenia, opposition candidate Stepan Demirchyan was defeated by Robert Kocharyan in a second round of voting. Following a year of tensions, protesters regrouped in April 2004 with the objective of forcing Kocharyan’s resignation. After several days of protests, police forcefully dispersed demonstrators using water cannons and stun grenades. Passage of Nikol Pashinyan’s speech: “I will go, I will enter the area of the National Assembly to negotiate with the parliamentarians and political forces about overcoming the current political situation. And we will do it in an atmosphere of love and solidarity. Istanbul Convention: Opened for signature on May 11 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey, the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence has led to divisions in Armenian society. Pulpulak: a public water fountain. Artur Vanetsyan: the current head of the National Security Service of Armenia. Aram Khachaturyan (1903-1978): World famous Soviet Armenian composer. Author of the famous “Gayane” and “Spartacus” ballets, three symphonies, piano, violin and cello concertos, as well as many other musical compositions. Khachatryan’s house-museum is located in Yerevan, Armenia. Glossary of Terms Alexander Tamanyan - an Armenian neoclassical architect who drew up the first general plan of the modern city of Yerevan, which was approved in 1924. Among famous buildings and projects of Tamanyan are the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Government House at Republic Square, the State Medical University as well as Freedom Square and Republic Square. Karen Karapetyan - Armenia’s former Prime Minister (2016-2018). Hovik Abrahamyan - Armenia’s former Prime Minister (2014–2016) , and former President of the National Assembly (2012-2014). Victory Park- a public park located on Аzatutyun Street, in the Kanaker-Zeytun district of Yerevan. The construction of the park began in the 1930s and was named Arabkir City Park, however after WWII it was renamed to Victory Park. It contains a memorial and a museum dedicated to the soldiers of WWII and a part of it serves as an amusement park. Mother Armenia - a statue of a woman holding a sword symbolizing Armenia. The monumental statue was installed at Victory Park in 1962, replacing the statue of Joseph Stalin. The sculptor is Ara Harutyunyan. Pulpulak - a public water fountain. Gerard Cafesjian - a US-Armenian businessman and philanthropist who founded the Cafesjian Family Foundation, the Cafesjian Museum Foundation and the Cafesjian Center for the Arts. Glossary of Terms Karen Demirchyan Subway System - The subway was opened in 1981 and currently has a single line with 10 stations. It also has a short and separate line that serves the Shengavit-Charbakh branch. The construction of the subway was initiated by Karen Demirchyan, who was then the First Secretary of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. Gortsaranayin subway station - A subway station in Yerevan that was opened in 1983. The station is located in an industrial part of Yerevan that is known for its numerous factories. Some of those have been abandoned after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Garegin Nzhdeh Square - Formerly known as Suren Spandaryan Square, it is the second largest square in Yerevan, located in the Shengavit district. The statue of Suren Spandaryan is in the middle of the square. Suren Spandaryan - An Armenian literary critic, journalist and a Bolsehvik. In 1912, he was arrested and then was sentenced to exile in Siberia where he died four years later. Third Mas - One of the urban areas of Yerevan, a part of Shengavit district. Rabiz culture - A musical genre in Armenia formed during the Soviet Union. Back then the culture was associated with workers and the word rabiz was an abbreviation of Russian “Rabochee Iskustvo” meaning “art of laborers.” Other theories state that the word has Turkish origins: “rab” meaning a creator, and “aziz” meaning darling. Rabiz music sounds like a mixture of Arabic and Turkish melodies and Armenian words. Qyart subculture - A type of people in Armenia who are known for wearing black, listening to rabiz music, speaking in criminal terminology and being conservative. Gyumri - The second largest city in Armenia, famous for its arts and crafts. The city was largely affected after the 1988 Spitak earthquake that took the lives of 25,000 people. Trolley - An electric bus using an external source of electricity and one of the transportation means in Yerevan. Glossary of Terms Mher Mkrtchyan - One of the oldest streets of central Yerevan named after famous actor Mher Mkrtchyan. Gold Market - the main gold market in Yerevan located on Khorenatsi Street. Rossia Mall - a newly built shopping mall located on Tigran Mets Street. The name of the mall comes from the building located next to it, the movie theater “Rossia” (previously “Ayrarat”), an example of Soviet modern architecture. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the building was transformed into a shopping center. Saint Gregory the Illuminator - One of the key figures in Armenian history and the first head of the Armenian Apostolistic Church. In 301 AD, thanks to his efforts, Armenia adopted Christianity as its state religion. Vernissage - a large open-air market near Republic Square. The market is famous among tourists and locals for its traditional Armenian rugs, handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, clothing, as well as musical instruments, paintings and antiquities. Glossary of Terms Lift - [лифт] Russian term for elevator. Most elevators in highrise buildings in Armenia are Soviet manufactured and have an average lifespan of 20-25 years. There are 4666 registered elevators in Armenia, most Soviet manufactured and in need of replacement. Replacing elevators in the capital is currently one of the priorities of the Yerevan municipality. Sakharov Square - Named after Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov, a Russian nuclear physicist, dissident, Nobel laureate, and activist for disarmament, peace and human rights. Sakharov was one of the few public figures in the Soviet Union to condemn the pogroms of Armenians in Soviet Azerbaijan. Sakharov’s bust was installed at the square in 2000. Today’s Sakharov Square was previously named after Meshadi Azizbekov and featured the bust of the Azerbaijani Marxist, one of the 26 famous commissars of the Soviet Union. Saryan Street - Named after Martiros Saryan, a famous Armenian painter whose house museum is also on the street named after him. Saryan is considered to be the founder of modern Armenian national school of painting. Bodyezd - [подъе́зд] Russian word meaning approach, access. Glossary of Terms Nor Geghi - A village in the Kotayk province, located 22 km north of Yerevan. Komitas Chamber Music Hall - A concert hall in Yerevan, Armenia. The building was designed by architect Stepan Kyurkchyan and opened its doors in 1977. Yeritasardakan Subway Station - A subway station in Yerevan that opened in 1981. It gets its name Yeritasardakan - meaning youth - because of its location near several universities. The architect was Stepan Kyurkchyan. Friendship Statue - A statue of two holding hands installed at Circular Park, near Teryan Street. The statue was a gift from the city of Carrara, Italy to Armenia. It is also known as the “Hands of Christ” because the hands are replicas of the famous “Christ the Redeemer” statue in Rio de Janeiro. Paplovok - [поплавок] Paplovok/Aragast is one of the most famous cafes of Yerevan. It was built in Soviet times and was quite popular in 1990s Yerevan. Khachatur Avetisyan (1926–1996) - Armenian composer famous for his arrangements of national Armenian melodies and compositions for Armenian folk instruments. Armenian Radio Archive - The archive of Armenia’s Public Radio is currently being digitized by Artur Ispiryan. Alexandr Harutyunyan (1920-2012) - Armenian composer, known for his trumpet Concerto composed in 1950. Martiros Saryan (1880-1972) - Armenian painter, founder of the Armenian school of modern painting. Hovhannes Shiraz (1914-1984) - Armenian poet. Azat Sherents (1913-1993) - Armenian actor, one of the founders of Armenian cinematographic comedy. Frunzik (Mher) Mkrtchyan - Armenian stage and film actor. Glossary of Terms Andrey Sakharov (1921 – 1989) - Russian nuclear physicist, Nobel laureate, and human rights activist. During the Karabakh conflict, he spoke against the violence committed against the Armenian population in Azerbaijan. Meshadi Aziz-bey oghlu Azizbekov (1876- 1918) - Soviet revolutionary of Azerbaijani origin, one of the 26 Baku Commissars. Vladimir Lenin’s Statue - Lenin’s statue, erected by Sergey Merkurov was placed in Republic Square, which was called Lenin Square in November 1940. After Armenia's independence, the statue was removed and is currently kept in the backyard of the National Gallery of Armenia. Glossary of Terms Tzhvzhik - A traditional Armenian dish made from beef liver and onions. Michael Avgustovich Ernst von der Nonne (1838-1919) - Colonel, the head architect of Yerevan, known as the Yerevan province in the 19th century. Architect of several buildings in Yerevan. Kara Bala (Stepan Harutyunyan, 1900-1970) - A flower seller in Yerevan in the 20th century, one of the symbols of Yerevan. According to legend, he was in love with actress Arus Voskanyan and one day he got in a fight with a man who was following her. Kara Bala ended up killing him and was jailed. He stayed in the same prison cell with poet Yeghishe Charents who dedicated a poem to Kara Bala. After being released from prison, Kara Bala found his garden destroyed and his family gone. He continued selling and giving away flowers until his death. His statue is located on Abovyan Street and passersby sometimes place flowers in his basket. Rafael Israelyan (1908-1973) - An Armenian architect. Among his famous works are Union of Artists of Armenia (1956), the Sardarapat Memorial (1968), Ararat Wine Factory (1937–1961) and many others. Glossary of Terms Nikoghayos Buniatyan (1878-1943) - An Armenian architect, the first general architect of Yerevan. Buildings by Buniatyan include the Grand Hotel Yerevan, Margaryan Maternity Hospital, N1 School named after Stepan Shahumyan and the Yerevan Agricultural Bank. Mark Grigoryan (1900-1978) - Soviet Armenian neoclassical architect, author of several buildings such as the Presidential Palace, the National Assembly of Armenia, Matenadaran, the building of the Constitutional Court of Armenia and many more. Grand Hotel Yerevan - The first hotel in Yerevan that opened in 1928. During the 1920s it was a popular meeting spot for Armenian intellectuals of the time. 1990s Armenia/"Cold and Dark Years" - In the beginning of the 1990s, newly independent Armenia was at war with Azerbaijan and experienced an energy crisis and shortage of basic consumer goods. The years became known as the cold and dark years. Northern Avenue cases at ECtHR - In the early 2000s, the Armenian Government under the guise of eminent domain, expropriated private property of people living in that area without providing proper compensation. Many people took their cases to the European Court of Human Rights. Narek Sargsyan (1959- ) - Former Minister of Urban Development of Armenia and also former Chairman of the State Committee on Urban Development. He also served as Yerevan's Chief Architect from 1999–2004 and 2011-2014. He was the chief architect of the Northern Avenue urban development project from 2004-2008. Dr. Suren Manukyan, Head of the new UNESCO Chair on Education and Prevention of Genocide and Other Atrocity Crimes at Yerevan State University (YSU) speaks about the establishment of the chair, the goals and objectives in raising awareness about genocides and contributing to the formation of global policies aimed at condemning and preventing genocides. Each year, UNESCO selects a number of projects in various countries to establish chairs that promote international inter-university cooperation and networking to enhance institutional capacities through knowledge sharing and collaborative work.  Since 2017, Dr. Manukyan has been the head of the Department of Genocide Studies at YSU, Institute for Armenian Studies, as well as head of the Department of Comparative Genocide Studies of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute (AGMI) since 2018. He served as Deputy Director of AGMI from 2007-2018 and is an adjunct lecturer at the American University of Armenia.

A new exhibition by the History Museum of Armenia entitled “Costume: Fragments of Identity” recently opened in downtown Yerevan. The curator of the exhibition, Vigen Galstyan speaks to EVN Report about how in the conceptualization of the temporary exhibit, it became clear how little scholarly research has been done on traditional Armenian costumes from a theoretical, political or social perspective.

Moving from one country to another can be a daunting exercise, not least of which is the cultural dimension. Entrepreneurs and social development practitioners Hiroki Tachiiri and Taiji Notsu, originally from Japan, made that move to Armenia. They talk to EVN Report about their latest venture, which includes a new company that will explore possibilities in the food, tourism and consulting industries, even a manga on Armenia which will be introduced in Japan.

In the early hours of July 28, 2021, Azerbaijani forces launched yet another attack against Armenian positions, this time in the Gegharkunik region, leaving three Armenian soldiers dead and a number of wounded. Tatevik Hayrapetyan, an expert on Azerbaijan, speaks to EVN Report about the intentions of Baku following the end of the 2020 Artsakh War, the Armenian response and the psychological toll of constant aggression.
