What if the most powerful tool to fight everything from chronic disease and climate change to social injustice was already on your plate? In this profound episode, Nicolette sits down with Mitali, the founder of The Vegan Publisher. With insights from working with over 40 authors, Mitali reveals that veganism is not a restrictive diet but a powerful, unifying lens through which we can address the world's most pressing issues. We explore her journey from a general publisher to an ethical entrepreneur, the hard truths about becoming a successful author, and why she believes the only way to end human oppression is to stop the exploitation of animals and the planet. This is a conversation about deep compassion, meeting people where they are, and how a single, powerful shift can be the key to healing so much of what feels broken. Welcome to today’s podcast episode, where we dive into a critical and often misunderstood subject with survivor-expert Alexandra Ford. Alexandra shatters the stereotypical image of a trafficking victim, sharing her journey from a "normal, boring, middle-class" childhood to being trafficked at age 20. As a former child advocate and high-achieving student, her story reveals how master manipulators exploit universal human needs for love and belonging, not just overt vulnerabilities. In this episode, we’ll hear about the complex path that led her there, including a history of childhood sexual assault and a brutalizing experience with the justice system that left her feeling disempowered and seeking control. Alexandra provides a chillingly clear explanation of the psychological coercion traffickers use, describing the "survival mindset" where the choice isn't between right and wrong, but between one risk and a worse one. She breaks down the moment she was trafficked—not by a stranger in an alley, but by a partner she loved and feared—and explains why screaming for help never even crossed her mind."I'm on stage at a strip club. There's no gun to my head... and the thought to scream for help never even crossed my mind. The only thought that crossed my mind was how can I please him? How can I do the thing that he wants me to do in the best possible way so I don't get hurt afterwards?"— Alexandra FordWe’ll also explore the crucial, proactive steps we can all take to prevent trafficking. Alexandra provides actionable advice for parents, including how to have meaningful conversations about consent that go beyond "no means no," the critical importance of discussing what happens after a child makes a mistake, and essential online safety tips. This episode is a powerful reminder that this is not just a "women's issue," but a community one that requires bringing boys and men into the conversation to address the roots of predation. Welcome to today’s podcast episode, where we dive into the transformative journey of living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and exploring unconventional therapies. Our guest today, who was diagnosed with CF later in life at 37, opens up about her personal battle with the disease and the incredible healing path she embarked on after the diagnosis. At the time, she was a healthy yoga teacher and integrative nutrition expert, raising a one-year-old while struggling with her health. After years of hospital stays and a life expectancy pegged at just 37, she found the courage to explore alternative treatments, including Gerson Therapy, which became a life-changing catalyst in her healing process. In this episode, we’ll hear about her decision to embrace Gerson Therapy, a controversial and intensive approach that goes against the typical CF treatment recommendations. With daily enemas, juicing, and detoxification, she began a journey that not only supported her physical body but also deeply impacted her mental and emotional health. As she shares, the process wasn’t just about the physical detox—it was a spiritual awakening. From the emotional weight of living with an invisible disease in an able-bodied society to the deep connection between mind, body, and spirit, her experience highlights the importance of tuning in to your body’s true needs and finding the courage to break free from conventional medical frameworks. We’ll also explore how somatic healing, a therapy focused on body-centered trauma release, played a pivotal role in her recovery. Somatic experiencing, as developed by Peter Levine, helps address the trauma stored in our bodies, making it a perfect complement to her physical healing journey. Through this, she was able to not only manage her chronic illness but also reclaim her mental clarity and emotional resilience. This episode is a powerful reminder that healing is not a linear process—it’s a blend of courage, fear, trust, and community support, all of which have become vital elements in this brave woman's ongoing recovery. Jane McLelland is a chartered physiotherapist who worked extensively in both the NHS and the private sector. After being given a terminal diagnosis with only a few weeks to live, Jane embarked on a desperate search for answers, uncovering research — some of it decades old — in her quest to survive. Rather than focusing on curing cancer, which is often unachievable, her strategy was to stop the disease from growing. Remarkably, her approach not only halted its progress — the cancer disappeared altogether. Using herself as a human guinea pig, Jane devised a pioneering protocol: a cocktail of low-toxicity, repurposed drugs not typically used for cancer, combined with a low-glycaemic diet and powerful supplements. This regimen effectively “starved” her cancer of its essential fuels — glucose, glutamine, and fat. She later captured this groundbreaking method in her ingenious and easy-to-follow “McLelland Metro Map,” which continues to guide patients and practitioners worldwide. In her work, Jane shares her deep exploration into cancer treatment and management. She highlights the profound impact of diet — particularly the benefits of a low-glycaemic approach, eliminating dairy, and reducing meat consumption. She also demonstrates how lifestyle changes can influence health outcomes, including how carefully calibrated, low-dose chemotherapy can bolster, rather than suppress, the immune system. Her journey through a wide spectrum of treatments — from natural supplements to rigorously researched drug combinations — offers invaluable insights into alternative and integrative cancer management strategies. Throughout, she provides practical advice on strengthening the immune system, supporting gut health, and tailoring treatment plans to individual needs. Jane’s story is not just about survival against impossible odds; it is about thriving, inspiring, and empowering others to take charge of their health. Through her research, personal experience, and innovative thinking, she continues to illuminate new pathways of hope in the fight against cancer. Dr. Dominic Brady, an award-winning plastic surgeon, was diagnosed with incurable Multiple Myeloma in 2017. Determined to augment his conventional treatment naturally, he did a deep dive into extensive cancer and nutrition research. As a result, Dr. Brady adopted a whole food, plant-based diet, regular exercise, and targeted supplements. His remarkable remission has surprised his oncologist, and he’s now on an extremely low dose of immunomodulators, with a goal to completely eliminate medication—something previously thought impossible for myeloma patients. In this episode, Dr. Brady shares his journey from being a cancer patient to helping others navigate their own cancer treatments. He highlights the critical role of nutrition, which is largely neglected in medical training. Inspired by Dr. Michael Gregor’s book How Not to Die, Dr. Brady embraced a diverse, plant-based diet to support his microbiome, aiming for 30 different foods per week. He also discusses fasting, calorie restriction during chemotherapy, and the power of fiber and healthy fats. Dr. Brady covers various health practices like infrared saunas, detoxification, and water purification to support healing. Mixalhítsa7 Alison Pascal is a passionate Indigenous community leader, educator, and advocate based in British Columbia, Canada. She is a member of the Sk̲wxwú7mesh Úxwumixw and the Líl̓wat7ul Nations, and her career is focused on advancing the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples in her community and beyond. Alison is particularly interested in language revitalization, land stewardship, and cultural preservation and has worked extensively in these areas throughout her career.Mixalhítsa7's leadership and advocacy work have earned her several awards, including the Order of British Columbia and the Indspire Award, which recognizes outstanding Indigenous achievement in Canada. She has also served on several boards and committees related to Indigenous issues, including the First Peoples' Cultural Council and the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre. Through her tireless work and dedication to Indigenous rights and cultural preservation, Mixalhítsa7 has become a respected and influential voice in her community and beyond. The podcast with Alison Pascal was a heart-wrenching conversation about the historical and current struggles of Indigenous communities in Canada. Pascal spoke about how the Canadian government's intervention in the lives of Indigenous people has caused them to suffer from alcohol consumption, drug use, and poor food management. It was not an accident, but a deliberate choice that resulted in intergenerational trauma affecting their physical and mental health. Pascal shared a story about how immigrant families were starving and freezing, but Indigenous nature helped them survive by teaching them how to farm. However, the Indigenous people were forced to side with the British to fight the French and Spanish, resulting in the loss of their land, which is now a commodity that can be sold. Today, Indigenous people are conditioned to stay inside and are denied access to gathering and foraging, leading to a loss of culture and spiritual connection to the land. The residential school system, which separated Indigenous children from their parents and land, led to a truth and reconciliation diet where children worked on school farms but were not allowed to eat the food, resulting in malnutrition and chronic diseases. Pascal questioned if it is possible to reprogram our bodies to not have chronic diseases and suggested the use of ancient medicines to maintain good health. The podcast also highlighted the issue of mental health stigma in Indigenous communities, which is exacerbated by the social aspects that white people see in Indigenous people, such as domestic violence, drug abuse, alcoholism, and gambling. Pascal spoke about the importance of a sustainable program to get kids onto the land to foster their interest in culture and the need for parents to be involved. Indigenous people are part of the land, and the land is part of them, but the spiritual loss has led to an autonomic economy that is split into unfarmable land, affecting their drinking water. Overall, the podcast highlighted the interconnectedness of intellectual, physical, mental, and emotional health, and how the wellbeing of Indigenous communities in Canada is essential for all living beings and the land. Pascal's emotional testimony left a lasting impact on listeners, calling for immediate action to address the long-standing issues affecting Indigenous people in Canada. Dr. Marie Mihalicz is a respected researcher, consultant, and founder of White Lightning Consulting, an organization committed to community-based healing and wellness retreats. She completed her Ph.D. at Royal Roads University, where her dissertation focused on Indigenous methods of healing and their potential for addressing the high rates of suicide and mental health issues in northern Saskatchewan communities. Her research findings have been used to influence policy change, with the aim of supporting sustainable, culturally relevant mental health services for Indigenous youth and families. Dr. Mihalicz and her team at White Lightning Consulting offer evidence-based healing and education programs that combine Western science and Indigenous healing methods. Through their collaborative community-based approach, they aim to empower Indigenous youth and families to pick up their knowledge bundles in today's world, strengthening and mobilizing community processes from the inside-out. In the face of the challenges posed by the pandemic and the complex intergenerational trauma experienced by Indigenous communities, Dr. Mihalicz and her team continue to work towards enhancing sustainable counseling supports and delivering effective leadership training workshops. In this 8th podcast of a nine part series, Marie Mihalicz discusses the importance of decolonizing trauma and healing the soul. She highlights how traditional ways of knowing are not recognized, and there are gaps in the mental health system that need to be addressed. Mihalicz emphasizes that trauma is passed down through blood, but so is healing, and it is essential to understand the historical links to trauma. She suggests that healing is in our DNA and that the delivery of mental health needs to change to include outdoor therapy, such as art therapy, breathwork, and hands-on ceremonies. Mihalicz believes that the biggest barriers to healing are the spiritual loss and the fact that traditional healing methods are not recognized by the current system. She emphasizes the need for protocols and boundaries around ceremonies, as well as space to sit down and talk about how we are doing. Mihalicz advocates for the use of traditional Indigenous practices in mental health treatment, such as prescribing ceremonies and mentorship through ceremony. She encourages people to learn about their history, stories, and intergenerational trauma, to talk about it and create safe spaces to heal. Finally, Mihalicz emphasizes that healing starts with the self, and one needs to heal oneself first before helping others. Dr. Milton Mills, MD is a practicing urgent care physician in the Washington DC area, with a focus on the use of nutritional measures to reduce the risk of major chronic diseases. He is an Associate Director of Preventive Medicine and a member of the National Advisory Board for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), where he has been a major contributor to position papers presented to the United States Department of Agriculture regarding Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Dr. Mills has published several research journal articles dealing with racial bias in federal nutrition policy and has been the lead plaintiff in PCRM’s class action lawsuit that asks for warning labels on milk. He is also a frequent volunteer at free medical clinics and travels widely, speaking at hospitals, churches and community centers throughout the country. Dr. Mills was featured in the documentary “What the Health” and will also appear in the upcoming film “The Silent Vegan”. He is a strong advocate for plant-based eating and addressing cultural disruption in the food system, particularly in communities of color. Through his work, Dr. Mills aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and to promote the use of sustainable, plant-based diets for both personal and planetary health. Dr. Mills discusses the impact of cultural disruption on plant-based eating and health in the BIPOC community in Nicolette’s seventh PhD Podcast. Dr. Mills explains that BIPOC communities have become dumping grounds for agricultural excess, leading to food scarcity and a lack of access to nutritious food. He advocates for the use of core crops, such as the Three Sisters (corn, beans, and squash), which provide good calories and adequate nutrition while also being sustainable and renewable. Dr. Mills highlights the historical impact of Western culture on the diets of POC, including the use of commodity crops, and how it has resulted in systemic and structural racism. He argues that Western medicine operates from a disease model and must change the way it practices medicine, as band-aids will not cure diseases. Dr. Mills emphasizes the importance of decolonizing our diet, mindset, and way of relating to the world to protect the planet and ourselves. He advocates for narrative medicine to address trauma and abuse and for doctors to unlearn bad habits and become part of the solution. Suzanne's upcoming YA book, Killing the Wittigo: Indigenous Culture-Based Approaches to Waking Up, Taking Action, and Doing the Work of Healing, is set to be published in June 2023. In her interview on Nicolette’s Fourth PhD podcast episode, Suzanne offers insights that go beyond the conventional risk factors cited by the government and scientists for disproportionate rates of diabetes and chronic disease in BIPOC communities. She provides a nuanced perspective on the impact of colonization, control, complex PTSD, voicelessness, intergenerational trauma, brain fog, monoculture, the credentials barrier, and multinational corporations' control over food security and inputs for growing. Suzanne debunks commonly held beliefs about poverty and the "thrifty gene" and explores the opportunities for creating a better future through re-learning, knowledge-sharing, consulting with those who hold cultural and ceremonial knowledge, and taking care of marginalized people. She emphasizes the importance of sharing stories and seeing to address the challenges faced by Indigenous communities. Suzanne's extensive experience in advocacy and direct-service positions at Indigenous-led organizations, including the Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto, the Anishinabek Nation (Health and Environment Program), the YWCA Elm Centre, and West Neighbourhood House, underscores her commitment to serving community members healing from intergenerational trauma and reclaiming culture while facing racism, poverty, homelessness, health issues, addictions, mental-health challenges, crime, and victimization. Dr. Breeze Harper, also known as Sistah Vegan, is a highly experienced diversity, equity, and inclusion expert with a PhD in the social sciences. Her work focuses on the intersections of food and racial and nutritional health justice, drawing on her background in cultural food geography and black feminist perspectives. In her interview with Nicolette on the third PhD Podcast, Dr. Harper shares her personal story of growing up with a master gardener father who taught her the importance of growing their own food, despite the loss of land around African Americans. Nicolette and Dr. Harper discuss the impact of monocultures and colonization on both people and soil in the United States, leading to a colonized microbiome and chronic disease. They delve into topics such as white supremacy, enslavement, industrialization, and the medical system's treatment of black people. Dr. Harper shares her journey of curing her fibroid tumors with a whole food plant-based diet and expresses her disappointment in the lack of BIPOC voices in the vegan community, as well as the contribution of capitalism in veganism to people's health and the fast-paced society we live in. Both Nicolette and Dr. Harper agree on the need for pure vulnerability from these voices and moving away from the individualism and monogamist nuclear family lives we live in. Dr. Psyche Williams-Forson is a distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland College Park. With a passion for material culture, Dr. Williams-Forson focuses her research on African Americans' lives in the United States from the late 19th century to the present. She is a multidisciplinary academic, serving as an affiliate faculty member of the Theatre, Dance, and Performing Studies, the Departments of Anthropology, African American Studies, The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and the Consortium on Race, Gender, and Ethnicity. Her extensive research in this area employs cultural studies, intersectionality, and popular culture to inform our understanding of historical legacies of race and gender representation. In Nicolette's second PhD interview, Dr. Psyche discusses her doctoral research on the association between Black people and chicken, which turned into just one chapter of her broader research. Their conversation explores the foodways of Black people, Southern food, and the legacy of slavery, which resulted in African slaves' agricultural knowledge. The discussion also touches on the complexity of factors contributing to Black people's health, including trauma and violence, and how food choices are not solely responsible. They highlight the importance of understanding that choosing what to eat is a middle/upper-class conversation, and food shaming should be avoided. Instead, we need to consider factors such as taste, access, availability, affordability, and knowledge of how to prepare food. Dr. Psyche emphasizes that eating is a necessity, and we need to help people where they are. Dr. Xavier's appearance on Nicolette’s first PhD podcast was a tour-de-force. She shared her insights on a range of issues, including the root causes of disease, food sovereignty versus food security, and the impact of colonization on access to nutritious foods that are part of one's heritage. She also touched on the ways in which racism acts as a barrier to food and disease, and how trauma can cause disease. Dr. Xavier underscored the importance of listening to our bodies and the foods it craves. She passionately believes that educating the next seven generations of people about food and history is vital, and that even social media can play a role in influencing the kinds of foods people are exposed to. Dr. Xavier’s upbringing was centered around whole foods, as her mom grew everything or traded for other foods and she reflects on how this all changed when they moved to Canada. As a well renowned fitness expert, John Lewis has spent over 2 decades in the health and fitness industry and played Division I College basketball. John is highly passionate about not only his own health and fitness, but that of others as well. Today, John has taken his passion for health and is now directing his first feature length documentary focused on food and social justice. John has teamed up with the maker of the award winning “What The Health” to create their joint venture “They’re Trying To Kill US”. The film follows co-director John Lewis from his beginnings as an adopted child from a crack-addicted birth mother, growing up as an overweight kid in the violence of Ferguson, Missouri, to becoming a prominent health and wellness advocate promoting compassion.Audiences journey with John as he crosses the country seeking answers to why Americans of Colour suffer from disproportionately higher rates of chronic disease than their European American counterparts, while examining the intersections of food, disease, race, poverty, institutional racism and government corruption. Through interviews with cultural influencers, doctors, researchers, politicians, attorneys, professional athletes, activists and experts in the field of food justice, John begins to unravel a story of collusion that has kept millions of US Americans sick, while the industries responsible make billions of dollars.Today, Nicolette engages in a conversation with John Lewis, delving into his remarkable journey from playing basketball to finding a new path towards wellness and purpose. The journey commenced in 2004 when the passing of a close friend compelled him to seek solutions for his own health issues, including IBS. By adopting a plant-based diet, he experienced a remarkable transformation within a mere two weeks, shedding inflammation and gaining newfound energy. However, the pivotal moment arrived when his mother was diagnosed with colon cancer, sparking his research into the link between lifestyle choices and diseases such as hypertension and heart disease. Through personal experiences and learning from the mistakes of others, he uncovered the ancient roots of veganism in Jainism, realizing that indigenous cultures had long embraced plant-based lifestyles. Along his path, he encountered pre-packaged vegan foods, which prompted him to transition towards whole foods, expanding his palate and understanding of diverse culinary traditions. Embracing his role as a catalyst for change, he founded the Badass Vegan movement, advocating for the planet, social justice, and personal well-being.With a focus on providing answers and promoting inclusivity, John tackles various topics, ranging from the disproportionate impact of food-related issues on Black communities to the manipulative tactics employed by insurance and fast-food companies. Through his film, "They're Trying to Kill Us," and his book, "Badass Vegan," his aim is to empower individuals to fuel their bodies, challenge the system, and live authentically. Join us on this transformative journey as we explore the history of veganism and discover how embracing a plant-based lifestyle can foster healing for ourselves and the world we inhabit. Remember, your "why" will serve as your guiding force on this path of transformation. Get ready to effect positive change and unleash your inner badass.
