Before oil and gas companies can start drilling, they are required to put money into a bond that will be used to pay for cleanup of abandoned wells or for failure to meet state mandates. However, these bonds are nowhere near the amount actually required for clean up and is costing Colorado taxpayers millions of dollars while enabling an exploitative and environmentally damaging industry.
