Stories of a Caring and Sharing Canada
Is Canada still a substantially and sufficiently caring and sharing country, at home and abroad? This year has brought unprecedented needs for Canada to be one. Its governments, corporations, communities and people have responded in generous and innovative ways, based on the democratic values they have shown in the past and cherish today. But they are increasingly strained and stressed by the new economic and other difficulties that they now face and those that lie ahead. What has and can be done to meet the enormous Canadian and global need for a compassionate Canada today?
The cadence, causes, constraints and needs for a strongly caring and sharing Canada can be seen in our commitment to converting compassion into action, in the broad, multifaceted and effectiveness of our international development cooperation and partnership, and, in particular, in critical cases, notably, the historic story of South Africa and the current story of Canada’s and Canadians global leadership in supporting vulnerable people equally devoted to a sovereign, independent, democratic, safe Ukraine and in saving children on the front lines of war-torn regions in the world.

Addressing Mental Health in Young Adults: Implications for Workplace Leaders
Young adults are reporting mental health issues at a significantly higher rate than older adults. In fact, two thirds of women aged 18-34 report living with a mental health condition, according to a recent poll commissioned by the Ontario Association of Social Workers.
Workplace leaders must confront these changes in order to recruit and retain young employees.
Our speakers will share their experiences in advancing mental health in the workplace, give tips on addressing the changing needs of young workers, and discuss the importance of building cultures that support mental health at work.
The panel discussion will shed light on the urgent need to address mental health in young adults, including racialized individuals, in the workplace. The discussion will provide workplace leaders with actionable solutions to destigmatize and improve mental health in the workplace, and provide relevant resources to employees, which will ultimately lead to better recruitment and retention of young employees in this new working environment.

Sowing the Seeds to Our Low-Carbon Future
Partnerships and ‘system-wide’ solutions are key to reducing emissions from Canada’s transportation sector. More than ever, our country’s world-class agriculture sector, refining expertise, and infrastructure are collaborating to unlock the potential of low-carbon fuels and help position Canada as a world leader in clean transportation energy.
Fighting climate change and growing the economy go hand-in-hand. Already well established in terms of technology, infrastructure, and availability, Canada’s transportation fuels sector continues to innovate and leverage new feedstocks, improving biofuel quality while their overall emissions intensity declines. By leveraging our collective value chains and innovative solutions like waste-to-fuel technology, we can help put Canada ahead of the curve as we continue Driving to 2050 and decarbonizing transportation to help reach our climate goals.

Critical Race Theory: The Case For Evaluating What We “Know” and How We Teach
Critical Race Theory (CRT) challenges us to understand and address the social, economic, political, and legal conditions that contribute to racial power disparity and inequality in our society. Yet, despite being in an era where we know we must think critically about what we hear and what we’ve learned, a basic lack of agreement on its scope and purpose has caused a questioning of CRT’s value in Canadian classrooms, and society generally. Further, debates around this topic that filter to us from the United States bias our judgment about the role “race” plays in Canadian society.
Join us on February 21, 2023 for a moderated discussion on Critical Race Theory, where our panelists will challenge us to reconsider what we “know” about Canada and its values.

The Empire Club of Canada Presents:
Opportunities and Challenges in the Era of Polycrisis
We are living through a new era of ‘polycrisis’ and uncertainty:
A climate emergency.
The socio-economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The highest levels of conflict since WWII.
One hundred million displaced people.
A rising cost of living.
The war in Ukraine.
Despite this uncertainty, the future of people and the planet is not predetermined.
The world’s population will pass the eight billion mark for the first time in November 2022. It is a moment to reflect on the remarkable development and progress our global community has made – from lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty to expanding access to quality healthcare and education. If we have the power to create a new geological era- the age of humans- then we can harness humanity’s immense collective power to slow the climate emergency in its tracks, the defining challenge of our times.
Mr. Achim Steiner will explore what CoP27 achieved and critically analyze if it is enough. He will attempt to define what “leave no one behind” means and outline the opportunities and challenges in our complex and ambiguous environment. Finally, he will discuss a framework of potential pathways for a new form of development through decarbonization and review why the United Nations, including UNDP, still must achieve these overarching objectives.
