With mental illness affecting roughly 1 in 17 Americans, this 8-week series targets the way our nation and its churches confront the conversation surrounding mental illness and is designed to clarify broad misperceptions and shed a new light on the topic - Biblically and psychologically. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that one in four adults, approximately 57.7 million Americans experience a mental health disorder in a given year.
The series includes professionals who discuss such topics as the six stages of grief, chemical imbalances, the effects of mental health disorders on a child's education, and suicide. Additional discussions include pastors, leadership and members within the church who suffer from mental illness. The workshop is hosted by Pastor Seneca who leads the discussion utilizing Biblical references of mental illness. Reference John 9.
The workshop series also includes featured guests, psychiatric doctors, therapists, couples, teachers and families that have encountered and live within mental illness circumstances.

Wrapping up our "Hidden Gifts" Series will be Ms. Kaye Brown & Mrs. Lois Howard. Our discussion will focus on parents, their spiritual and natural role within their child's development, and how God intends for challenging situations (a developmentally disabled child or other challenge) to be meant for our good. Hidden gifts God shares with us are more than just material things or personal tools to us. People that pour into our lives can be valuable resources that God has given to us as precious gifts. Mrs. Lois Howard discusses her involvement in her son's life, how it impacted him positively, and how it intensely changing her life.
We all have unique talents, gifts, and challenges. But within our challenges, we can discover a world of hidden gifts and personal experiences God has tailored just for us. If we never look, we’ll never experience the hidden beauties God has for us.
We have had a powerful time recently, and we just want to review and discuss some of the tools that we can take from our discussions. We've pulled some clips from our episodes to share tools on how to break barriers in our lives.
Over the past month, we've discussed intellectual disabilities, Borderline Intellectual Functioning in particular, and overcoming our challenges. We will have a lively discussion on discovering intellectual disorders through the eyes of the diagnosed and the social/societal restrictions and challenges those persons face and feel throughout their lives. We will also discuss overcoming challenges and disabilities we personally face.

Although living with Borderline Intellectual Functioning may pose challenges, one of the major things I faced was not seeing myself beyond my current situation. I allowed my limitations to say who I was to become - even though my destiny said I was so much more. Your hard work will beat your limitations. We will discuss how to move past personal and social limitations, discover our uniqueness, and live life without limitations.
Sometimes finding "intellectual beauty" can be challenging. As individuals diagnosed with Borderline Intellectual Functioning or another Intellectual Impairment, how do we build upon what we know to find the beauty within ourselves to excel? What tools, resources, support groups and structural guidelines have and are we currently putting in place to build a place of excellence for ourselves, and/or loved ones affected by this diagnosis? I have lived this life for 26 years, and although it is a daily challenge, there are also many successes - I am a living testament. This is an open forum, and although I am not a medical expert - I am an expert in my functional social position. Please listen in, ask questions, and let's support each other!
