In this deeply personal and eye-opening episode, I share the story of my late mother, whose delayed diagnosis and treatment reveal the devastating consequences of being invisible in a healthcare system that too often fails Black women.Drawing inspiration from Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez, we confront the dangerous myth that Black women feel less pain—a lie rooted in historical racism and perpetuated in modern medicine. I share my own lived experience of becoming a mother and navigating a system where being seen, heard, and believed isn’t always a given. This episode is both a tribute and a call to action. We're often told that education is the great equaliser, the key to unlocking opportunity for all. But what if that very system is instead a mirror, starkly reflecting the deep-seated inequalities of our society? Join me as we delve into the UK education system, armed with ONS data, to expose the uncomfortable truth: the profound disparities rooted in wealth and class. From the chasm in resources between private and state schools to the undeniable overrepresentation of the privileged in coveted high-status careers, we're dismantling the myth of a level playing field. And in doing so, we'll confront a difficult question: is it time we had a more honest conversation with our children and young adults, acknowledging that sometimes, no matter how diligently they strive, some doors may remain stubbornly closed?Episode Resources:1. Welcome to Series 1 of Debunking the Lies That Bind. In this opening episode, we take a bold step into the deeply rooted narratives that have shaped women's lives — the ones passed down through education, culture, and even the silence of history. We’ll challenge the myth that a woman’s value lies in how she conforms, not in how she contributes. We’ll revisit powerful moments like Charles Moore’s lens on injustice and Katherine Switzer’s defiant marathon, asking: What else have we inherited without question? This is the beginning of unlearning — and of finding truth in our voices.Episode Resources:1. We Should all be Feminist: A personal and powerful essay from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the bestselling author of Americanah and Half of a Yellow Sun.‘I would like to ask that we begin to dream about and plan for a different world. A fairer world. A world of happier men and happier women who are truer to themselves. And this is how to start: we must raise our daughters differently.3. Charles Lee Moore (March 9, 1931 – March 11, 2010) was an American photographerknown for his photographs documenting the Civil Rights Movement. Probably his most famous photo is of Martin Luther King Jr.'s arrest for loitering on September 3, 1958. It is this photo that sparked Moore's involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.4. Kathrine Virginia Switzer (born January 5, 1947)[1] is an American marathon runner, author, and television commentator.[2]In 1967, she became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as an officially registered competitor.[3] During her run, the race manager Jock Semple assaulted Switzer, trying to grab her bib number and thereby remove her from official competition. After knocking down Switzer's trainer and fellow runner, Arnie Briggs, when he tried to protect her, Semple was shoved to the ground by Switzer's boyfriend, Thomas Miller, who was running with her, and she completed the race.[3]As a result of her run, the AAU banned women from competing in races against men.[4] It was not until 1972 that the Boston Marathon established an official women's race.[5]

Affirmations are statements (powerful words put together) that are meant to affect your behaviour and the course of your life in a positive way. The goal of repeating affirmations is to change your way of thinking (go from being negative to positive), change your habits, and create a better life. Depending on yourself is necessary, but depending on God is life-changing. Why? God is not human to fail, disappoint, or mislead you. God cares about you (after all, he created you!). Your own strength is not sufficient. God has the power to change your life. Whenever we depend on God, He shows up and takes charge of everything, we see His power in full display, and He changes every bad situation, turning worse challenges into testimonies. Whenever we put our total dependence on God, He strengthens us, He becomes the power that influences our actions, and we have an extraordinarily fruitful result. We don't need science to know there's power behind our thoughts-how our thoughts influence our lifestyle. We don't need science to know self- criticism has the power to hold us back in a multitude of ways. What we need is a solution to fight back. This is why biblical affirmations are more powerful than regular affirmations. They don't depend on your strength, but on God's strength. These affirmations are powerful biblical affirmations that I hope will help you: Believe, repeat and confess God's truth in a more personal way Dig into scripture and dive into prayer more Confess victory in your life Proclaim God's word with authority Remain faithful to God during victories and battles

No matter what you do, you’ll never make everyone happy. Considering other people’s feelings and treating them with kindness is something we should all strive to do. But sacrificing our wellbeing to make others happy is not. When you compromise who you are and what you need, people-pleasing has crossed the line from kind and generous to self-abandonment — not being your authentic self because you’re afraid others will disapprove, criticise, or reject you. In this episode, I touch on people pleasing signs and offer practical solutions to help you stop people pleasing. According to Psychologists, the following 15 signs indicate you’re a people-pleaser How many signs of people-pleasing do you recognise in yourself? You want everyone to like you. You over-apologise. You crave validation. You let people take advantage of you. You feel guilty or mean when you set boundaries. You’re afraid of conflict. You’ve always been a “good girl” (or guy); a rule-follower. You think self-care is optional. You feel tense, anxious, or on-edge. You expect yourself to be perfect and hold yourself to high standards. You put yourself last and don’t know how to ask for what you need. You’re sensitive to criticism. You think your feelings, needs, opinions, and ideas aren’t as important as other people’s You're a "fixer"; you hate to see anyone hurt, afraid, sad, or uncomfortable. You resent always being asked to do more and wish people would consider your feelings and needs. Remember, you can’t make everyone happy. You can fool yourself for a while, just like I did. But at some point, what you really want and who you really are will catch up with you. If you give yourself permission to pursue what you really want, you can be more at peace with yourself and your life!. The best way to boost your self-confidence is to open yourself up to positive new experiences and allow yourself to succeed. If you have low self-confidence, you probably don’t like taking risks—whether those risks involve physical activity, going for a new job or promotion, talking to someone you like, or just trying a new activity. It is a classic catch-22: your low self-confidence encourages you to avoid doing the exact things that would help you build up your self-confidence. If uninterrupted, this can lead to an ever-deepening spiral of low self-confidence; you don’t have any exciting new successes, so your self-confidence is even lower, so you feel even less like trying new things. Of course, the most important thing you can do to build your self-confidence is to get some success experiences under your belt—no matter how small—In this episode, I discuss other things you can try as well. Are you dark skinned? She tells you what she’s seen and what she feels as a dark-skinned Black woman. And after making it out of a life of poverty and into a successful career against the odds, she realises she doesn’t know how to really love romantically, or how to be intimately loved. So, then she faces that. It's a great read that gives hope, encouraging readers to look back and embrace childhood dreams or failures, let go of shame, and move forward to become the best version of ourselves. If you have the opportunity to listen to it as an audiobook, I highly recommend! It is narrated by Viola herself and she is a phenomenal voice actor, as you would expect.
