By definition, the nine Enneagram personality types are problematic, and issues related to the ego affect close relationships. It's easy to see how the other person brings problems into a relationship, but it's much harder to see how we bring challenges, too. Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes explain the challenges that each of the nine Enneagram types creates in close relationships. Bea and Uranio are giving a workshop called Art of Conscious Connection: Healing Through Dialogue in January and February of 2025. Participants will explore how styles of communication can help bridge gaps and help overcome challenges. Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes discuss how early childhood development is impacted by Enneagram types. As adults, if we make the connections between our current struggles to unattended needs that come from childhood, it can make behavioral changes easier.  This valuable theme is taught in the CP Enneagram Academy’s professional Enneagram Skills workshop, which is offered online each year.   They reference Sigmund Freud, Claudio Naranjo, Karne Horney, and many others who have paved the way to understanding this relationship between nature and nurture.  Beatrice Chesnut’s Paper about Object Relations Theory and the Enneagram https://cpenneagram.com/s/BChestnut_Object-Relations-Theory.pdf Like learning about the Enneagram from Bea and Uranio? Humility is an important concept in inner work according to many spiritual traditions. In some ways, it’s a key part of what the Enneagram is about, which is disidentifying with ego.  Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes will discuss how humility is commonly understood but also how we might understand it when we are using the Enneagram for inner work.  They discuss how pride shows up in all nine types and all three dominant instincts, and how humility can help us discern the difference between ego and our true selves.  Like learning about the Enneagram from Bea and Uranio? Our personality is a defensive coping structure to protect us from pain, including traumatic injury. This defense mechanism was necessary when dealing with trauma at the time, but afterward, we tend to have problems that flow from that defense that block our growth. It becomes like a wound that hasn’t been healed and creates challenges for change. Uranio Paes and licensed psychotherapist Beatrice Chestnut share specific cases they had with clients of each Enneagram type when healing trauma.  CP Enneagram Academy has Enneagram inner work retreats that use trauma healing to help students.  If you are working through trauma or know someone who is, go to https://cpenneagram.com/live-courses to learn more about our inner work retreats. Pulling from the theory of Claudio Narajano, Bea and Uranio share some common myths and misconceptions about Enneagram types when subtypes are not understood.  When referring to subtypes, they are not referring to Wings.  They use instinctual subtypes, which describe the mix of the passion of the type and dominant instinct, which is either self-preservation, social, or sexual. It is easy to think people of the same type are similar because they share a common passion. However, the dominant instinct influences the passion, and the subtype places a spotlight on the traits that make people different within each type.  For decades, Bea and Uranio studied the instinctual subtypes in-depth, but they also put the subtypes to the test by helping individuals and seeing subtypes work in practice. This is a great episode that can help prevent mistyping and guide people to their distinct growth paths.  Like learning about the Enneagram? It's easy to overlook the passion of each of the types when we are thinking in terms of instinctual sequences or cultural influences on personalities. But the fundamentals of the Enneagram are crucial to understanding ourselves, our motivations, and how we interact with others in relationships.  Today we are sharing our very first episode, Getting Started: The Nine Types. Most people use the heart center superficially, meaning they use reactive and conditioned emotions, like an emotional reflex. In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes go through each of the nine types and describe ways in which all Enneagram types can Activate their Heart Center and truly feel the four core emotions: fear, anger, sadness, and happiness. Activating the Heart Center is important for all types, including Heart types. It’s a sign of emotional maturity. It is when someone can deeply feel a range of emotions rather than disconnect from them, avoid them, or express them reactively.  Join a community of Enneagram enthusiasts and participate in live monthly webinars and Q&As with Bea and Uranio. Every Enneagram type has a head center. While types Five, Six, and Seven overuse this center, the Body and Heart types underuse it.  In this episode, Uranio Paes explains that the majority of people use the most basic part of the lower Head Center too often and during inappropriate times. It is the mechanical part of the brain that is used to memorize information without critical thinking or reasoning. In this mode, people are vulnerable to confirmation bias because anything that challenges the current way of thinking is avoided. Uranio describes the phases of developing the Head Center and how it can test our understanding of the world around us.  Also, this episode’s Top Five is light-hearted. It is the top five most interesting things that Uranio Paes noticed about Beatrice Chestnut. It's easy to look at the nine Types when trying to understand how people behave and react in relationships. However, considering the 27 Subtypes is essential to understanding relationships. Subtypes are not just about the instincts of the individual, but how the instinct interacts with the passion of the type. The alchemistry is what plays out In this episode, Beatrice Chesnut and Uranio Paes discuss both from the point of view of the person with a subtype and how another person may experience the person in a relationship. They even give tips on how to interact with each subtype in a relationship. Want to listen to our earlier episodes about Subtypes? Listen to: S1 Ep04. Why are enneagram subtypes so important? In the Enneagram, Arrows and Wings are central to understanding how the symbol can be used as a tool for personal development. In this episode, Beatrice Chesnut and Uranio describe the Enneagram not as a static symbol, but as a symbol in movement, using the teachings from the philosopher George Gurdjieff. There is an order that each type can take that eases the challenges the ego will face when evolving into a higher self. They explain how to discern between positive and negative movements towards wings and arrows, and why a balanced approach is necessary.
