Welcome back everyone it's Joe Hotai and Brian Osman Co-founders of Epich Aotearoa - Create a Better Future Podcast!
With a New addition to the team Mr Richard Fallow (Video editor/Producer/Good Dude). Going forward we'll be looking to improve our visual and audio content with Richards help, so please bear with us. In this episode Joe speaks with Phil 'Hoki' Hokianga Former New Zealand Special Air Service (SAS) Operator & Leader / Company Director about a number of topics including:
Phil's desire to serve in the military and the SAS, some of his upbringing, his strong whanau (family) heritage in the defence force, some of his regrets, challenges, learnings, observations, guidance and counsel to/for others, his acknowledgement/recognition and thanks for those who laid the foundations for the NZSAS unit in particular, his transition into the civilian sector, becoming a company director of @Vertical Horizonz New Zealand - his love for his wife and children, his battle with prostate cancer plus so much more.
Sadly, but gratefully for me, this was a one and done opportunity for me to have Phil on the podcast - His decision which he made very clear, and which I was eager to grab with both hands. Phil, is a very intelligent, reserved & humble man. I've wanted to have him on the podcast for a long time. Extremely grateful that he decided to take me up on the open invitation.
Phil was one of those Men you just didn't muck around with in the unit. I remember seeing him during my selection and his name being mentioned in 'hushed' tones by some of the senior soldiers on my selection. I could tell just from his presence and the way he carried himself he was someone who commanded and had the respect of those around him. What privilege this was for me to share some time and space with this incredible Man.
On behalf of Brian, Richard & myself we appreciate you stopping by and giving us some of your valuable time. We sincerely hope and trust that you will find value in this episode leveraging the lived experiences of our special guest today Mr Phil Hokianga or Hoki to those who know him best. Please be sure to leave us your comments, questions or suggestions that you'd like us to know about.

Welcome back everyone it's Joe Hotai and Brian Osman Co-founders of Epich Aotearoa - Create a Better Future Podcast! And in this episode Joe has the opportunity to speak with Gregg 'Pup' Johnson. Former NZSAS Operator/Team Commander. As part of the "In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins" My co-host/co-founder Brian couldn't make it today, but we didn't let that hold us back. During this conversation Pup speaks openly about some of his fears/concerns that were holding him back from applying to do the NZSAS selection in the first place. The catalyst which helped him follow through and ultimately apply. He speaks honestly about his decision to voluntarily withdraw from the British SAS selection course. Working in the private security sector, going back to the NZSAS and deploying on a number of operations whilst back in the unit. He shares some hardcase (funny) stories in typical Kiwi fashion and highlights some of the other SF units comments around "if it isn't nailed down the Kiwi's will take it" 😂.
Pup speaks about his transition journey, going back to school, going back to the infantry battalion and working in the training wing/department and his passion for helping veterans and others who may be struggling and needing help. He shares some heart warming stories about Dougie Grant and John McNut - 2 former NZSAS Operators who were/are still to this day "Highly Regarded, Respected and Missed" by ALL who knew these incredible Men. Disclaimer: He mentions a few well known characters within the unit either by first name ONLY or by INITIALS. Where possible I've tried to mute out those names and/or initials - however, I may have missed some at different points as I wasn't taking notes of when that happened. That aside I hope you enjoy hearing Pup speak about some of his journey and that if possible, you're able to take something positive away from it which might help you on your path.
Pup has a genuine respect and love for the unit and his desire is that hopefully through sharing some of his experiences (where he can) on a podcast like this, might help inspire the next generation of operators seeking to serve in the SAS.

This conversation took place at the end of a beautiful day in Whakatāne New Zealand at Willie Apiata VC's home. We spoke about Anzac Day with Willie and some of his Bro's. We particularly spoke about the events from the Day - Saturday 23rd April 2022. The day before (22nd April) Willie Apiata VC contacted some of his Brothers and invited them to join him in getting out in the community and handing out some poppies in preparation for ANZAC Day. ALL accepted - Hopefully this conversation helps you get a bit more of an understanding of what drives Willie to do what he does, and at the same time get a bit of an insight into some of the relationships and bonds that connect servicemen and Women and their families, regardless of where they served and/or for how long. We have a bit of a laugh at each other expense - but to be honest the biggest laughs were had when I didn't have the camera rolling. Kia ora Willie, Willie's Son Barton, (Willie's Mum - Mum), Hayley and her Mum, Karl or Carl 😂 Sorry bro didn't ask you how you spell your name, Aaron, and Mac. Also BIG Thank you to the Whakatāne RSA and to the incredible and generous people of Whakatāne. Your support and generosity was simply amazing to behold. Special thank you to Nikolao, Dion, Todd and Allan for their brief and personal messages on what Anzac Day means to them. We thank you so much for doing that. Next year we'll look to give more notice. 💯 👊 Much love and respect to ALL who are currently serving and your families - Thank you Likewise to those who have served and your families for supporting you to be able to serve. Thank you to all those who are preparing to serve 🙏 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them We will remember them. E kore rātou e kaumātuatia, Pēnei i a tātou kua mahue nei. LEST WE FORGET! Apologies - We couldn't use "The Last Post" without breeching copyright.

It's well overdue primarily because both Brian and I being time poor and myself personally lacking confidence in my ability to learn some of this stuff. Sorry I got excited when I learned a couple of new things lol - that's why the bits at the start of the video. It's probably normal to those who know how to do this sort of animation stuff - but it was a HUGE achievement for me 😂 😂 But, I just needed to push that to the side and punch on and get amongst it. This video is purely to express our thanks and appreciation to all of those who have been kind enough to support us through your comments, messages, emails and calls. THANK YOU ALL. We've said all along that we'll get better and we will continue to try and do that. Thank you for your patience with us to date - standby, we're just getting started. Apologies for missing all the other messages that have been sent - I just didn't have time to take and download all the screen shots, edit the relevant and then compile everything - so I just grabbed literally a handful and tried to create something that is hopefully semi-ok. Appreciate you ALL, Joe & Brian Epich Aotearoa - Create a Better Future Co-Founders WDW!

We take this opportunity to reflect on the things they have taken away from some of the wonderful experiences shared in the ‘In the Service of Others- Who Dares Wins’ series.
We explore things that we found insightful, surprising and challenging as well as share some messages from listeners that have engaged with our amazing guests. We also look at what the series is about and why it came to be and what we think are some take aways to help turn the series into something even more meaningful!

Ladies and Gentlemen - Aotearoa New Zealand the one and only Mr Dion Jensen....
During this episode Dion talks about "Coming out the other side of Military Life" Trauma - Transition and Evolution. But, don't be fooled into thinking this only applies to ex military personnel. Because it doesn't. There are so many positive take-aways from this episode regardless of your circumstances or position.
This episode can also be enlightening for spouses who perhaps have seen their significant others struggle with trauma, transition and/or trying to evolve.
Dion provides insights, solutions, resources and advice to help us recognise, acknowledge and overcome Trauma and PTSD. He speaks about our subconscious body-guards and explains the positive roles they play in keeping us and at times others safe.
He talks us through the transition processes and what that involves/looks like.
He describes what it means to evolve and the positivity that can create for not only ourselves but for others.
Dion also quizzes Joe with some questions to get his thoughts on a couple of scenarios (Which is quite funny to hear Joe default to treating a basic warning order he received from Dion on the fly, as though the hikers were somehow threats 😂).
Dion gives some real talk (Apologies and warning - there is some profanity involved as Dion addresses a number of important issues). He speaks about his love for his brothers and names a large number of them. A number of whom have gone on to serve within the special forces.
He acknowledges his parents and speaks about his upbringing, his own weaknesses and how he strived to turn those into strengths - plus so much more.
Ladies and Gentlemen - we invite you to take some time and have a listen to this incredible Man - and if you would like to learn and know more - please reach out to him through the links below.

Finally: We sincerely apologise for some of the audio quality in this episode. We're still learning the ropes in this space. Some small improvements are happening - but we realise we need to do better. We thank you in advance for sticking with us.
As promised, part of the new series "In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins" seeks to share the lived experiences from multiple perspectives.
Coming up this week, we have the opportunity to hear from one of these brave and courageous woman who have had to carry the weight and burden of maintaining the home, raising the children, feeling isolated and alone - plus so much more.
As the pattern has been so far - in order to try and help others, the founders of Epich Aotearoa understand the need to strive to lead by example. We can't expect others to allow themselves to be vulnerable and open to judgement and/or criticism if we're not prepared to go first.
It's not acceptable to us, to ask someone else to do something we're not prepared to do. So, Joe (Co-Founder) asked his wife Helen, if she would go first and share her unfiltered insights, perspectives, challenges and more from her side. She humbly agreed.
Helen brings an interesting view point in many respects as she met her husband before he went through the NZ selection & cycle - saw the disappointment when he didn't get badged in the NZ unit - Left her family behind and moved to Australia - Dealt with extended periods of time apart from her husband (isolated and without family or friends) - Faced the uncertainty of "will my husband come home" and "will he be different if he does" - The challenges for her and their children, post life in the SAS, plus so much more.
This conversation is raw, deeply personal and at times painful. But the intent and purpose behind it is to serve others and help them know that they're not alone and that there is life and light at the end of the tunnel - even when things appear to be at there darkest.

*Part 2*
Kia Ora Everybody - With the announcement of the new series "In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins" as part of the Epich Aotearoa - Create a Better Future Podcast, being communicated Friday 01st October 2021.
We thought it timely to air the first episode this coming Monday 04th October. You're invited to tune in, as Brian Osman (Co-Founding partner) of Epich delves deep into a conversation with Joe Hotai - about his time completing the NZ SAS Selection and Cycle of training, prior to moving to Australia and completing their selection and cycle, before being assigned to an operational squadron.
In this conversation Brian provides an opportunity for Joe to speak about topics that have otherwise been kept relatively private. The intent of this particular series and the aspirational outcomes, centre around striving to assist and support the individual who is willing to share "their" experiences in relation to their time in the special forces.
Extending beyond the aspirations of trying to help the individual, includes the additional hopes of reaching and potentially helping others. Whether they have served in similar units, or the defence force in general, or not at all. We feel that through their stories and lived experiences, there are valuable learnings available to help and support the broader community as a whole - thus providing another potential mechanism, in the pursuit of helping people, to Create a Better Future.
We felt it wouldn't be right if the Co-Founding partner Joe Hotai wasn't prepared to go first and allow himself to be vulnerable to judgement and/or criticism. It was therefore necessary that Joe be the first one interviewed. Nothing was out of bounds with Joe and he willingly opened up on a number of raw, sometimes painful and deeply impactful lessons.
During this warts and all conversation we find out and hear from Joe's perspective about:
- What drove him to want to join the SAS
- What challenges were involved in getting there and staying there
- Why he wasn't able to participate in the NZ Badging ceremony with his peers
- The move to Australia and going through everything again to join the Australian SAS
- The poor decisions Joe made based on his frame of mind at the time and his own ego and pride
- The value of his relationship and love for his wife and family
- The importance of a sense of humour
**There is a part around mid-way through of the conversation, where joe is by himself and speaking about Brian's interview etiquette - Crack up**
- The transition from special forces to civilian life and trying to fill that void
- The difficulties in letting go and moving forward
- The realisation of the effective transferable skills attained
- Plus so much more....
During the planning process for this series, we discovered our desire and "need" to hear the stories of the spouses/partners who are deeply tied and connected to these life events - in order to gain their insights and to hear, see and feel of their "equally" important experiences in the hope of helping others. Stay tuned for these stories from the amazing 'significant others.'
To those looking for help, guidance etc - we invite you to tune in - there just might be something here for you or for someone you know. Spread the word, if you think it will be of service and benefit for others and feel free to support us on the journey.
Finally - To those former or current serving members of the special forces (including your significant others) we invite you to come on our podcast, step into a non-judgemental environment, while feeling supported, respected, enabled and empowered to share your valuable lived experiences, in the hope of helping others and Creating a Better Future! Be bold, be brave Contact us - We will reply....Thank you for your service - Listen out....
