It's been a brutal week in esports and gaming. The FGC, and especially the Smash community, has had a myraid of allegations come out about prominent community members. Multiple major players have been dropped from teams and the biggest fighting game event in the world was cancelled because of allegations against EVO's co-founder and President. In this show, fighting game writer Danny Howard and I talk about the allegations, EVO's cancellation and the safety of FGC events for minors. In the show I rundown some of the major allegations. Here are the links to those stories: Warning: These stories are often graphic and touch on pedophilia, abuse, sexual assault and more sensitive topics. While we encourage reading the stories to properly understand the issues at play here we recognize that these stories can recall harmful personal memories for some people. Mikey "CrackPr0n" Pham on EVO co-founder Joey "Mr Wizard" Cuellar. (https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sra4k5) BunnyAyu accuses Mike "MikeZ" Zaimonthas of inappropriate texts and sexual advances. (https://imgur.com/a/EAHadqu) Captain Zack accuses Nairo of having a sexual encounter while he was a minor (https://twitter.com/CaptainZack_/status/1278574207207686144) Puppeh accuses Cinnpie of having a sexual relationship with a minor (https://twitter.com/PuppehSSB/status/1278335061243441157) Anonymous girl accuses Anti of telling her to lie about her age and hooking up with a minor. (https://twitter.com/shxvah/status/1278742023734870016?) There are a lot more allegations we didn't cover directly but there are tons of issues in the FGC, esports and gaming at large. We commend everyone who had the courage to speak out about these issues and hope that courage leads to true change in the community going forward. Special Guest: Danny Howard.
Daily Fantasy games capitalized on a loophole that allowed them to operate as defacto sports betting competitions even when sports betting was only legal in Nevada and New Jersey. Even though sports betting is opening to state after state due to a Supreme Court decision in 2018, daily fantasy giants like DraftKings and Fanduel set themselves up for success. But those aren't the only daily fantasy games. PrizePicks, another leading DFS site with a different format to DraftKings and Fanduel, was already in esports pre-pandemic and the lack of sports caused the company to focus in on esports as a key part of the site's offering. Adam Wexler, PrizePicks CEO, joins the show to talk about the expansion into esports, where bettors are putting money down and what makes PrizePicks unique. Esports betting is having a moment. As the sports shutdown continued on, sportsbooks began to take more meaningful looks at esports offerings. The result was a massive increase in wagers taken on esports and lasting reprecussion for the mainstreaming of esports betting. GameCo CEO Blaine Graboyes has been on the frontlines of the push of video games into casinos. On this pod, Blaine and I talk about the boom of esports betting, changing attitudes in leading sportsbooks and how his company is placing videogames in center spots on casino floors. As esports organizations progress, they are focusing more on player health. Doctor's are realizing this is an area where that is underrepresented in medical communities and gamers need doctors that understand the unique strains placed on the body by long hours of gaming. Dr. Corey J. Csakai is one of those doctors. He founded Esports Healthcare, a place where gamers can learn about unique problems that arise from their favorite hobby. Here are some of the guides they have created for gamers: Upper Crossed Syndrome (https://esportshealthcare.com/upper-crossed-syndrome/) Lower Crossed Syndrome (https://esportshealthcare.com/lower-crossed-syndrome/) Dexterity Routine for Fingers (https://www.youtube.com/esportshealthcare) If you enjoyed the podcast, please rate and subscribe, it helps us out a ton! Everyone in the gaming world has seen giveaways appear on their timeline. There's usually a few requirements like following a brand, a streamer and tagging a friend. In return, a person is entered to win a gaming product like a laptop or headphones. But you've probably also seen drama as sites are accused of not following through, accounts are inactive or processes aren't transparent. Vast, founded by former Halo pro Trey Christensen, is making sure giveaways are run correctly everytime. After he founded the company in 2017, one of his first clients was a former Halo pro who was gaining traction on a new game called Fortnite. You can probably guess who it was. Listen in to this podcast to learn how Vast is improving giveaways, how he partnered with Ninja and the ways to reduce potential issues related to the gaming staple. Jason Lake is one of the true founding fathers of western esports. Few companies can touch the run of Complexity Gaming from being founded in 2003 until now. Through that time, Lake has seen different eras of esports come and go. According to Lake, we are currently in Esports 3.0. Here's how he breaks down the history of esports and the lessons he has learned along the way. In the podcast the conversation refrences a few articles where I talked with Lake. Travis Mynard served as the liason between LCS players and Riot Games for over six years. Last summer, he felt he could do more good for players by becoming a third party talent agent. Now working with the United Talent Agency, one of Hollywood's biggest agencies, he's helping build esports players into individual brands. Key findings from UTA's recent poll that shows a dramatic increase in gaming content: Among other activities for filling the void, at least 40% of respondents say they’re consuming more video games, music streaming, and YouTube content. More than 8 in 10 within the key demo of 25-44, say that playing sports-related video games provides enjoyment as a replacement. 70% of those who say they miss watching live sports, and more than three-quarters of those under 25, say they will continue playing and watching more video games after live sports returns.
