Everyday Eternal Podcast

We are Magic: the Gathering’s oldest podcast focused on the Legacy format, bringing you event results, new technologies & community news. Our hosts break down complex strategies in cosy atmosphere and analyze the competitive spirit it takes to succeed in the long run. Everyday Eternal is both your cutthroat Legacy grinder podcast, as well as the relaxed hangout of three format veterans who don’t take themselves too seriously.

Vintage Bootcamp with Justin ‘IAmActuallyLvL1’ Gennari – Get Ready For Eternal Weekend | EP.202

Julian is joined by the Vintage Ambassador himself, Justin Gennari, for a full guided tour of the current Vintage metagame. Justin breaks down why Vintage might be secretly the healthiest format in Magic, what really separates Esper and UB Lurrus, why Max Gilmore’s BUG Lurrus is both sweet and clunky, and how weird accidents like Kitesail Larcenist actually happen in Vintage. We dig through everything: Lurrus tempo, PO and Breach combo, Mono Black’s breakout performance, the three major Workshop variants, the sad state of Bazaar decks, Mono White Initiative, the Doomsday renaissance (or lack thereof), and Oath in 2024+. Justin also shares what he’s sleeving up for Eternal Weekend Europe and gives 10-second thoughts on the post-ban Legacy landscape.A must-listen if you’re heading to Bologna - or just want to know what the Vintage sickos are up to these days.00:00:00 – Cold OpenJulian introduces Justin “Vintage Ambassador” Gennari and sets up the two-part Eternal Weekend special.00:03:30 – Justin’s MTG World TourTravel plans, EW Europe, EW Japan, and why he’s skipping Legacy in Tokyo.00:06:00 – Is Vintage the healthiest format in Magic? Why Vintage is currently wide, balanced, and surprisingly “normal.”00:08:50 – What does “Lurrus” even mean in Vintage?Esper vs. UB Lurrus: matchup data, removal differences, and why blue decks have always ruled Vintage.00:14:20 – Max Gilmore’s BUG Lurrus Top 8Is it real? $50k on Magic a Year?! Anuraag Das Spills Everything | EP.201

We somehow convinced Anuraag Das to step away from his broadcast desk long enough to talk about… his broadcast desk. Once known as one of the pillars of Legacy, Anu tells us how a bit of "hey, someone's gotta stream this" spiralled into DreamHack contracts, 15 battery packs, and paying union fees that cost more than a playset of Underground Seas. We dive into his journey from everyday grinder to the person actually making Magic coverage happen, the disasters that nearly fried a whole event (and his power bank), and the moment he realised Twitch might not, in fact, be the promised land. Expect plenty of behind-the-scenes war stories, control-player micro-management confessions, and the eternal question: why is it always Reanimator on camera? 00:00:00 “I Spent $50,000 on Magic… and Lived to Tell the Tale”How Anuraag accidentally turned a hobby into a full-time production company (and a tax headache). 00:23:00 “My Biggest Mistake? Twitch.”Anuraag’s painful confession: the great content strategy regret that still haunts him. 00:33:30 “Coverage Should Make You Feel Like a Pro Wrestler”Why the stage matters, how the truss became a symbol of power, and making players feel like absolute legends. 00:44:30 The Ironing Board EraFrom bringing his own table to building Frankenstein setups in hotel rooms: the true behind-the-scenes horror stories of coverage. 00:50:30 Who Chooses the Feature Matches (and Why It's Always Reanimator)Pulling back the curtain on the most asked (and most cursed) question in Magic coverage. 01:15:00 The Last Time Anuraag Played LegacyThe moment the grind ended, the cameras rolled, and Miracles turned into a memory. https://www.youtube.com/anzidmtg https://x.com/anzidmtg Thank you for tuning in, Until next time! Sportsmanship is Dead… Or Maybe Just the New Tech? – EW Review With Max Gilmore | EP.200

This week on Everyday Eternal, the boys are joined by Max Gilmore, an Eternal Weekend champion who recently added yet another Top8 to his belt. Together they navigate their way through another episode that was definitely planned in advance. Between “serious” Vintage talk and questionable life advice, the crew dives into Eternal Weekend stories, commentary behind the scenes, and the eternal struggle of looking smart on camera while eating junk food in pajama pants. We also learn why Max’s Vintage deck secretly runs on frogs, how to lose your reputation faster than a Dark Confidant trigger, and why sportsmanship might actually be the new tech.00:00:00 Commentating EW & Cooking shark00:16:20 How Many Angles Would You Shoot?00:37:00 Max' Calculated Shot at Top801:15:00 Mindset Differences01:30:00 EW Legacy In The Bookshttps://mtgtop8.com/event?e=74965&f=VIhttps://mtgtop8.com/event?e=75011&f=LEhttps://mtgdecks.net/Legacy/2025-na-legacy-champs-card-titan-tournament-216884/winratesThank you for tuning in,Until next time!Julian

Kai’s Italian Misadventures @ 4Seasons | EP.199

Between tales of potato sponsorships, Magic tournament bans with nightclub-level secrecy, and an entrance through a life-sized Thomas the Tank Engine, the episode sets a new bar for “you can’t make this up.”From there, it’s a whirlwind of LEGO heists, nostalgic IRC trolling, and tournament breakdowns ranging from Burn taking down a 2.5k to Kai’s heroic attempt to metagame against a banned card. Bavarian brewhouses get overrun by Commander pods, and demons get mistaken for hotel reception bells. Somewhere in between, Callum is busy crash-testing LEGO cars at full speed, and the hosts start plotting their 200th episode — which may or may not feature the world’s first potato demon double feature.00:00:00 Quakenet, Sweet Potatoes & Julian gets Kicked00:18:30 Is LEGO the next MTG?00:34:30 NRG Trial 2.5k hits 100 Players00:48:00 UNICEF on Magic Cards?!00:49:00 BURN wins a Major Event!01:01:00 Kai DOMINATES @ 4Seasons01:15:30 Nadu Elves is Just Too Cool01:36:30 8-Player EDH Or Pol Pot?https://mtgtop8.com/event?e=73824&f=LEhttps://mtgtop8.com/event?e=73970&f=LEThank you for tuning in,Until next time!Julian

Kai and Callum return from Eternal Mania and the Legacy European Masters with plenty of stories and just a few bruised egos. From night bus journeys and questionable Belgian cuisine to the thrill of sitting across from some of Europe’s best Legacy players, they recount their experiences with equal parts honesty and deck choices that looked smarter on paper than they did in round three.Tune in to find out why Eternal Mania is one of the best community events in Europe, even if your record says otherwise.(No trophies were harmed in the making of this episode)00:00:00 Shuffling for Dummies00:17:00 Friday night in Hasselt01:12:00 Saturday - Legacy & Premodern01:19:30 Chill Out, Twitch Chat01:37:30 CEDH Tournaments Are An Insult To Your Intelligence01:47:30 Sunday - No Kais Allowed https://mtgdecks.net/Legacy/painter-decklist-by-callum-brownson-smith-2580400https://mtgdecks.net/Legacy/european-legacy-masters-2025-eternal-mania-hasselt-belgium-tournament-207436https://x.com/Sawatarix/status/1952712529798406631https://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=72365&f=LEhttps://www.youtube.com/@bazaarofboxesThank you for tuning in,Until next time!Julian

Goblins, Nightclubs, and the Man Who Broke Legacy | EP.196

In this episode, we bravely attempt to make our rambling sound structured by claiming it’s “about the community.” What it’s actually about is cardboard hoarding, arguing over whether Judge Tower counts as a real format, and trying to convince ourselves that a Ledger Shredder counts as a financial plan.Meanwhile, Johan Larsson strolls in fresh off his Eternal Mania win, dropping Legacy wisdom while the rest of us ramble about goblin collectors, nightclub encounters, and whether playing too many Tamiyos is a lifestyle choice.By the end, we’ve somehow managed to cover tournament prep, travel safety in Kenya, and whether it’s physically possible to fistfight a whale - all while proving that Magic is equal parts strategy, nostalgia, and absolutely unhinged side tangents.00:00:00 Sideboarding Advice @ Berghain00:13:50 Johan Larsson joins the band01:27:30 Listener Questions https://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=72365&d=748932&f=LEThank you for tuning in,Until next time!Julian

Glimpse Twice If You’re Winning – Combo ELVES Brakdown! | EP.195

Just in time for Eternal Mania to unleash a storm of Legacy degeneracy across Europe, a familiar green menace has crawled straight back into the spotlight: Jaime Vázquez Villares took down the Spanish National Championship and followed it up just the next day with a Top8 in the IMPACT Returns main event... with GLIMPSE Elves! Now, you might have heard it here first... okay, you almost certainly didn't. But Julian is vibrating with joy at the sight of Quirion Ranger once again doing actual, meaningful things in Legacy. After jamming dozens of matches, he's ready to unload his brain about why Glimpse Elves is suddenly a thing again - including a couple of subtle (read: completely overlooked) shifts in the metagame that are opening the door for our little green friends, plus two real problems the deck faces that aren’t named Orcish Bowmasters. Phage Against the Machine | EP.194

We regret to inform you that Kai’s Phage obsession has entered what experts are calling the "no-return phase.” Multiple sources close to the situation (i.e. us) report he's started referring to losses as “inevitable consequences of brilliance.” His entourage is pushing for an intervention, but Kai insists it’s all part of his visionary arc. We’ll see how that’s going.Meanwhile, Julian has returned to the MTGO grind with Painter, only to discover that (shockingly) the format has not undergone a spiritual awakening in his absence. Turns out, Legacy is still Legacy, and Painter still paints.Callum, now employed and therefore morally obligated to pretend he has less free time, predicts change is coming. Some new cards are arriving, and one of them might even achieve the sacred status of Ledger Shredder of the Set™ ; but let’s not kid ourselves, the rest will end up in binders or bulk boxes by the weekend.Actually, who still uses binders anyway?00:00:00 Is Kai the Lebron of EDH?00:28:30 Demon vs Treefolk00:38:30 Monday Monetary Modern Mothers 00:45:30 THERE BE NEW CARDS AND SOME GOODhttps://www.twitch.tv/impactreturnsThank you for tuning in,Until next time!Julian

In a bold and daring move, Wizards of the Coast decided to do... absolutely nothing. No bans, no unbans, just leading us on with a "we're thinking about it" and a firm shrug in Legacy’s direction. Naturally, we spend over an hour dissecting this non-event like it’s the Zapruder film.We were tempted to slap a “find out why!” on here like true clickbait professionals in training... but let’s be real: if you’re listening to this podcast, you probably already have a hunch.Still, sit back and enjoy us trying to make sense of the current Legacy metagame (spoiler: Reanimator still good) as we're wondering out loud if Eternal Weekend Europe is just going to be a Reanimator mirror match with cosplay.00:00:00 Is this a Riot or a Rave?00:30:30 Oath of Druids in Legacy00:32:00 No Changes for Legacy, You Serious?!01:06:00 New Big Results Are Inhttps://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/banned-and-restricted-june-30-2025https://www.mtgo.com/decklist/legacy-showcase-challenge-2025-07-0612801617https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/this-week-in-legacy-reanimator-lives-onThank you for tuning in,Until next time!Julian

Vegas Casinos Introducing ‘Legacy’ As New Crowd Favorite | EP.191

Las Vegas casinos have announced the addition of Magic: The Gathering’s Legacy format to their gaming options, highlighting the format’s recent surge in volatility as a major draw. Operators view this increased unpredictability as a positive feature, adding excitement and strategic depth that fits the city’s fast-paced gaming environment.Sources indicate that casinos are working closely with Wizards of the Coast to maintain and even enhance this trend, aiming to keep gameplay thrilling and engaging for competitive players. This partnership signals a new chapter in Vegas’s commitment to innovative and dynamic gaming experiences. In a related move, Wizards of the Coast is reportedly developing a Universes Beyond set themed around Las Vegas, promising to bring the city’s iconic sights and high-stakes energy directly into the Magic universe.00:00:00 Callum Wins An Award00:15:30 Kai Has Changed00:21:30 Saga Has Changed00:33:30 Eternal Weekend in ITALY!00:55:30 What's Hot In Legacy?https://magic.gg/news/announcing-upcoming-rcqs-spotlight-events-eternal-weekends-and-morehttps://www.mtggoldfish.com/tournament/legacy-showcase-challenge-2025-06-08#paperhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/19VFaQPBLqvZWkBN94g3fHgMV7YU0W3iEsqfW09Iz2xQ/edit?tab=t.0Thank you for tuning in,Until next time!Julian

Legacy has been around for over 20 years now - time for the boys to review the worst of the worst, the absolute bottom of the barrel of decks the community ever tricked itself into accepting into the format. Callum rejoins the crew and is immediately wrong - about Black Lotus, of all the cards. Something he turns out to actually have been right about is the return of everyone's favourite, most difficult-to-pilot archetype: 17-colour Midrange Pile. Turns out Rakshasa's Bargain is a real and showing up in playsets across Legacy now. Also, get your bodies ready for the GOLDEN TICKET for the next Impact Returns in Spain in July! Everyday Eternal has picked up one of those and we'll be giving it away to one of you soon! What it do? FREE ACCESS TO ALL EVENTS at Impact Returns throughout the weekend. THEY BANNED IT! – Reactions With Bob Huang | EP.187

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEAmnesty International Stands Firm in Support of Legacy Format Bans: A Call for Justice Against Mycospawn and Troll of Khazad-dûmMarch 31, 2025 – London, UK – In a bold and unprecedented move, Amnesty International has thrown its full support behind the recent ban of Sowing Mycospawn and Troll of Khazad-dûm from the Legacy format of Magic: The Gathering. While the organization has long championed the rights of prisoners and the abolition of unjust detention, today, Amnesty makes an exception: we stand united in the belief that these two cards deserve to be locked away in the deepest dungeons of the Magic multiverse, never to see the light of competitive play again. The decision to ban Sowing Mycospawn and Troll of Khazad-dûm was not made lightly, but with a sense of justice that resonates deeply with our core values. These cards, once staples of dominance in the Legacy format, have perpetuated toxic gameplay that undermines the integrity of the game. The endless cycles of resource recursion, unfair board states, and the total disregard for strategic diversity have only served to imprison players in a cycle of frustration. For far too long, these cards have silenced the voice of fair play and decency in Magic: The Gathering.Amnesty International believes that Sowing Mycospawn and Troll of Khazad-dûm represent an insidious form of "cruel and unusual punishment" for players who strive for fairness and challenge. No card, no matter how powerful, should be allowed to perpetuate such an oppressive reign over the creativity and joy that defines the Magic community. These cards have been nothing short of a tyrannical force, suffocating the fun and strategy that make the Legacy format a beloved playground for players worldwide. While our advocacy for human rights remains unwavering, we recognize the need to confront all forms of oppression – even when it comes in the form of card games. Let this serve as a warning to other cards that may follow: Amnesty International will not stand idly by while any force, real or imaginary, seeks to rob players of their freedom to enjoy the game in its purest form. We urge Wizards of the Coast to continue to exercise their power to ban cards that stifle creativity, fairness, and joy within the Magic: The Gathering community.Mycospawn and Troll of Khazad-dûm are now sentenced to the deepest dungeons of Magic history. May they rot there, forgotten, as a reminder that no card is above the law of fun.Contact:Amnesty International Press Officepress@amnesty.org+44 20 7413 550000:00:00 The Man, The Myth, The Legend  00:06:00 Buden Brawl Hamburg 202500:14:00 THEY BANNED IT!https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/banned-and-restricted-announcement-march-31-2025Thank you for tuning in,Until next time!Julian

Legacy Power Ranking – March ’25 | EP.186

I feel like for the last ~18 months, Legacy has near-constantly been in a state of suspense, anxiously anticipating the next big change. And I can't be alone in disliking it. I enjoy it when not just "the current meta" but the format as a whole settles, and actually allows for people to get deeper into their decks and find their place in the format. It's what initially "entrenched" me into the format, and what I think Magic as a whole could really use. Guess what I'm looking for is a break from the constant hype, change and even just anticipation of the next big thing that might just be around the corner. Note that I don't mean that in a sense of wanting bans to slow down; if anything, quite the opposite. I've always enjoyed Legacy for being somewhat decoupled from the fast pace of what Standard used to be. As such, we're trying to be the change we wanna see, and dive into the depths of not just the format but the meta as a whole to establish what's going on. Yeah, things might surely change again over the course of this year, but I really do enjoy taking a conscious step back and taking a good look at the status quo. Everyone's different, but I feel we haven't done that enough on a greater scale. Out of Control | EP.185

Spurred on by a recent chat on the Eternal Durdles podcast, the boys dive headfirst into the age-old lament: where have all the "real" Control decks gone in Legacy? And, more importantly—what makes one in the first place?Armed with ancient wisdom (a.k.a. some 2007 musings from venerable sage Adrian Sullivan), we attempt to unravel the mysteries of Control, why it’s been all but exiled from Legacy, and whether we’re all (read: not Julian) just hopelessly nostalgic for a bygone era—or, you know, actually onto something.00:00:00 AI Takes Over00:11:00 Strategic Archetype vs Role00:17:25 Adrian Sullivan: The Strategic Moment, 200700:40:30 WTF is going on with Control?!00:53:00 Control Can't Compete01:21:30 The Biggest Problem Nobody Talks Abouthttps://articles.starcitygames.com/articles/whos-the-beatdown/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-A6rU9pA3gwhttps://articles.starcitygames.com/articles/sullivan-library-distinctions-in-strategic-archetypes/https://articles.starcitygames.com/articles/sullivan-library-the-strategic-moment/https://articles.starcitygames.com/articles/sullivan-library-why-midrange-rules-todays-standard/Thank you for tuning in,Until next time!Julian
