Marcellus Buchheit, President and CEO of Wibu-Systems USA, spoke with Scott MacKenzie, host of the Industrial Talk podcast, at the Q1 meeting of the Object Management Group in Reston, VA, USA. Marcellus offered interesting insights into subscription-based services, drawing a parallel between consumer-based subscriptions like those presented for products at the Consumer Electronics Show and similar business models in the industrial and medical world. For example, Marcellus pointed out the advantages of a subscription service for an expensive medical device, which allows the healthcare provider to avoid the heavy upfront costs of the system and pay only on a monthly basis or a usage basis. He also noted that it is advantageous for both parties to maintain ongoing engagement to keep the system up and running as it should for the service provider while continuing the revenue stream for the manufacturer.

Marcellus Buchheit, Wibu-Systems USA’s president and CEO, is interviewed by Scott Mackenzie, host of the popular IndustrialTalk podcast series, at the Q4 2022 Industry IoT Consortium (IIC) meeting held in Austin, TX. Marcellus is the co-chair of the IIC’s Trustworthiness Working Group, dedicated to exploring the five aspects of trustworthiness – safety, security, privacy, reliability, and resilience – relevant to IIoT and the IIC's vision of an IIoT ecosystem. In this episode, Marcellus sheds some light on how trust and trustworthiness are crucial elements to ascertain confidence in the proper operation of industrial systems, particularly those that can have detrimental safety and environmental impact on people and society at large if mishandled. Baden TV ist vor Ort und hat mit verschiedenen Repräsentanten aus Karlsruhe gesprochen. Seit 50 Jahren ist Karlsruhe eine Pionierregion für IT-Entwicklungen, so Dr. Frank Mentrup, Oberbürgermeister der Stadt Karlsruhe. Der IT Security Club ist ein schönes Sprungbrett für Start-ups, um mit der Entwicklung zu beginnen, sich zu vernetzen und dann ein marktfähiges Produkt anbieten zu können. David Hermanns, Geschäftsführer CyberForum, sieht Wibu-Systems als ein Ankerunternehmen. Mit dem CyberLab werden Unternehmen aus dem Bereich IT-Sicherheit während der Gründungsphase unterstützt und danach können sie im IT Security Club ihre nächsten Schritte gehen. Professor Dr. Jörn Müller-Quade, Leiter Kryptographie und Sicherheit am KIT (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie), stellt fest, dass IT-Sicherheit wichtig für Unternehmen ist, die sich bisher nicht mit diesem Thema befasst haben, und dass IT-Sicherheit ein kreatives Moment hat, denn man muss manchmal wie ein Angreifer denken. Eine Begegnungsstätte wie dieser Club bietet exzellente Chancen. Dirk Fox, Initiator KA-IT-Si und Geschäftsführer Secorvo Security Consulting GmbH, betont die lange Tradition von IT-Sicherheit in Karlsruhe, denn bereits in den 1980er Jahren wurde der erste Lehrstuhl für IT-Sicherheit in Karlsruhe gegründet und blickt auch in die Zukunft. Es gibt die Chance, dass der IT Security Club einen Schub erzeugt und dass Firmen entstehen, die IT-Security in Deutschland gestalten werden. Im CyberForum konnte die Innovationsmanagerin Dr. Tamara Högler bereits acht Jahre Erfahrung gewinnen, denn sie hatte damals proaktiv Kooperationspartner zusammengebracht und sowohl bei Projektanträgen und der finanziellen Unterstützung an Innovationsvorhaben gearbeitet, was jetzt eine besondere Dienstleistung des IT Security Clubs angeboten wird.

Excerpt from the talk of Guenther Fischer, Wibu-Systems' Sr. Consultant, Licensing and Protection, at SD Association Global Workshop Europe 2021 This live event was designed to educate leading European technology vendors about SD frameworks and specifications, market trends in a very competitive ecosystem, and memory card security best practices. The SD Association featured presentations from some of its members - Smile Electronics, Tuxera, Western Digital, and Wibu-Systems. In our segment, we illustrated how hardware containers for software licenses include not just the traditional USB dongles, but also ASIC chips and memory cards in different form factors, including SD cards, microSD cards, and CFast cards. We covered their design and the security components that were added for this specific scope and showed a number of success stories; companies like Rockwell Automation / Allen Bradley, Rohde & Schwarz, Maroxx, Fritz Stephan, and Metrohm are using them in all sorts of application fields, ranging from industrial contexts, to gambling, medicine and life science.

This is why we are particularly proud that one of our company’s founders, Marcellus Buchheit, was chosen to be a co-chair of the Industry IoT Consortium’s Trustworthiness Task  Group. The task group was set up to take charge of one of the most pressing issues in modern connected industry: the trustworthiness of digital systems. On 15 July, the efforts of the group members were rewarded with the publication of a foundational new document, the IIoT Trustworthiness Framework Foundations, in which they outline the five essential qualities of trustworthiness − safety, security, privacy, reliability, and resilience − and what they mean in practice. To accompany their publication, the Trustworthiness Task Group has reassembled its co-authors for a special panel discussion.
