Returning to the show for the fifth time (4 recorded episodes, 1 live show) is our old friend, Andy Amendola of Red Racer Books. Andy is here today to talk about his new book, "Josef's Big Dream" that he wrote in partnership with two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, Josef Newgarden and his wife Ashley. We talk to Andy about how he was introduced to the Newgarden's for the first time and his process of writing the book with Josef and Ashley. This was Andy's first biographical book and his approach was very different from the previous books. As part of his work with IndyCar and the Newgardens', Andy and his family attended the Indianapolis 500 for the first time in 2024. He shares his experience of the weekend and going on track to have his photo with back-to-back winner Josef Newgarden. Erik and D.J. are joined this week by Sarah Offenbach (@offey_on_track) on Instagram. Sarah is a motorsports content creator and influencer who has focused primarily on the IndyCar Series the last few years. As we've long promised, we finally sit down and look at the state of the IndyCar series. Why are they struggling with TV ratings? Why are a lot of general fans not familiar with the series drivers? How has the Roger Penske era of IndyCar really gone? Which current IndyCar driver sent her and her husband a congratulatory message for their wedding? Before we get too far into the show, we talk about the NASCAR Championship Weekend and D.J.'s +1200 bet for Joey Logano to win the Championship hit thanks to Alex Bowman's disqualification after the Roval. On this week's episode of Garage Talk, we wrap up the 2024 Wednesday Night Dash iRacing season with a discussion of what went well and what we're looking to update next year. The new season kicks off on January 8th and registration will be open soon. We also unveil the Wednesday Night Dash Season 11 Next Gen schedule and iRacing Indy Racing World Series Season 5 schedule. Erik's controversial take on stage racing gets called out as we debut our first-ever mailbag section of the show. After hearing the perspective of a younger audience member who likes stage racing and correctly points out why YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikTok videos are so popular as the same logic as stage racing, does Erik soften his stance? In our final segment, we recap the weekend in NASCAR and Formula 1. Tyler Reddick's incredible pass and win, which seemed unlikely before the late caution, are the topics of much discussion. Was Ryan Blaney's move to stick with his normal racing line open the door for Reddick? Oh, and Max vs Lando continued at the Mexican Grand Prix. Joey Logano is the luckiest man in NASCAR. One minute he's out of the playoffs, the next he's back in due to a disqualification. The following week he punches his ticket to The Championship 4 in Phoenix. D.J. took a +1200 odds from his sports betting app and has gone all in on Logano winning the championship. As we discuss the rumors of NASCAR renovating Homestead Miami Speedway with the possibility of shifting the championship race back there, we look at the costs of renovation, why building race tracks is a bad investment, and whether a "stadium district" (building residential, shopping, restaurants, etc.) would work for a racetrack. Would the traffic and noise be too much? Before we wrap the show we have to shout out to Hunter Hughes, Ian Miller, and Lucas Puntralli for the 2nd place finish in the LMP2 class during the iRacing Petit Le Mans. It's the first endurance podium for F-R Racing and a great momentum swing going into the Daytona 24 next year! Finally, Simagic released some new products to the market including the P500 load cell pedals which are meant to compete with the Logitech G Pro, and Fanatec introductory lines. We kick off the show this week unfortunately having to talk about another hurricane. We've had hurricanes hit two weeks in a row and cause major damage to the US directly impacting friends in our racing community. If you're interested in donating to the relief efforts of Hurricane Helene or Hurricane Milton, please see our links below. We'll also be posting these links during our weekly racing broadcasts for the rest of the 2024 season. Moving on to racing business, there was a lot to discuss from Talladega weekend. The weird start time for the truck race on Friday, and some accidents during the Xfinity race on Saturday, but we focus largely on the Cup Series race on Sunday. Large accidents, playoff contender Ryan Blaney being wrecked at a stage finish, Ford vs Chevy pushing, and a hole in Ricky Stenhouse Jr's door. As we kick off this week's episode, we want to share our thoughts on the horrific tragedy of Hurricane Helene, especially how hard it hit western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. These communities were not expecting this and the damage has been devastating. In fact, two drivers we race with were directly impacted by the storm and heavy flooding. If you're interested in donating to one of the many wonderful relief charities working on the long road to recovery, see the links below. We also talk a little about NASCAR and how Michael Jordan, Denny Hamlin, and Front Row Motorsports filed an antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR over the charter agreements. How far will this lawsuit go?Next, we talk about moving around the country and how that has impacted our accents over the years. We also dive briefly into the coke vs soda vs pop debate. On this edition of F-R Racing's Garage Talk, our old friend, Jeppson's Malört returns to cap off a bad week of racing on the iRacing platform. We talk about our iRacing IndyCar series with D.J. doing play-by-play for the first time and Erik getting a black flag exiting the pits, ruining his night. We move on to the Wednesday Night Dash Xfinity Series and D.J. discusses his lap 1 wreck that ruined his night and Erik's struggles with iRacing blinking and other wrecks. We move on and discuss Max Verstappen's fine and community service for swearing during the FIA press conference in Singapore and how the chaos agent himself responded to the FIA's action. Will we see Valtteri Bottas driving in IndyCar next year? D.J. is also planning a trip back to the Midwest for a wedding in 2025 so maybe we'll have to host our first show with a live audience at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. On this episode of F-R Racing's Garage Talk, D.J. discloses that last week's Weekend Recap show was his "Flu game" as he did it while having a 102-degree fever. In addition, we discuss fast food and Erik's surprising dislike for fast food in general, but we do get him to admit that there are certain foods he does enjoy. We do a quick recap of our iRacing league races (Long Beach on Tuesday, Indianapolis on Wednesday) and Erik gives his comments on the Indy 6-hour race from last Friday night where he and Lucas Puntarelli put together an impressive 5th place finish in the LMP2 class out of 12 in class. It was Lucas' first endurance event and he looks forward to many more.Next, we recap the IndyCar season finale at Nashville and briefly discuss Scott Borchetta's (Big Machine Records, Racing, etc.) comments about IndyCar needing to spend $100 million on advertising and promotion to "catch up" and bring back the sport. It's a staggering number, but we believe he's correct. Finally, we recap last week's Formula 1 race at Baku, Red Bull ditching a special livery due to car weight, and NASCAR's fun weekend at Watkins Glen. --------- Wednesday Night Dash airs most Wednesdays at 10 pm ET. On this week's Garage Talk, we spend a lot of time deep-diving into IndyCar's continued problems with marketing. A story broke recently about CEO Mark Miles' comments about Mexico City as a viable race location and wanting to visit "somewhere new". If you look at the list of tracks that IndyCar has visited but currently doesn't, that list is rather small. We look into some of the tracks they've visited previously and why they don't visit there anymore. Everything from attendance/marketing issues to driver and fan safety. The big news out of Formula 1 is the worst-kept rumor in recent weeks. Adrian Newey has a new gig and it's not at Ferrari. We discuss his role and the future of Lance Stroll at Aston Martin. Finally, we dive off topic as we remember the late great James Earl Jones who passed away earlier this week at the age of 93. We dive off into a Star Trek discussion as well (hence the Live Long and Prosper). --------- Wednesday Night Dash airs most Wednesdays at 10 pm ET. As we are coming up on the three-year anniversary of the first time D.J. and Erik live-streamed racing on Wednesday Night, we go back and discuss the history of Wednesday Night Dash and how a goofy one-on-one race turned into a 22-car broadcasted league in its 10th season with hundreds of people tuning in to watch each week. Wednesday Night Dash also was responsible for our second league, the Indy Racing World Series. We talk about how Wednesday Night Dash and the iRacing agreement with IndyCar ending created that series. As we move on to real racing news, we talk about our friend Andy Amendola's new book with 2x Indy 500 winner, Josef Newgarden being released and how Josef signed the first 500 copies of the book. Next, we discuss the controversy at Gateway with Will Power's involvement in David Malukas' crash, and then Power crashing out on the following restart. That led to Power being unhappy with Newgarden. We also discuss the growing voice of both fans and teams being upset with Roger Penske owning the series and owning the top-tier team.
