In a press conference ahead of this weekend's Turkish Grand Prix, Max stressed that losing the championship to Hamilton would not have any real impact on his life, saying… "I always do my best and I know the team is always doing the best they can… "If that's going to be enough, at the end of the year first, then that's an amazing achievement and that's what we work for, right? "But I think even if we finish second we will have had a great season, and at the end of the day, it's not going to change my life! “I enjoy what I'm doing and I think that is also very important! “For me, there is not much to worry about, really... "You just have to work well and work hard together and then we will find out at the end of the season where that will put us...  “Is it first, or is it second? “We don't know!" I’m not sure sis, I feel like winning a World Championship would change every drivers life! Lewis Hamilton has also spoken about the pressure of this championship battle, saying… “It's not a case of ignoring the pressure, as it's there, but it's the understanding that what will be will be… “All you can do is prepare the best way you can, all you can do is give it 100 per cent and what's coming up is coming up! "I just don't worry about those things...  “I'm very fortunate in the past I've had lots of ups and downs but had an amazing time, a lot of growth, I don't worry about 'what if', that's up ahead... "I try and prepare for now, that means making sure I've done the work with the guys back at the factory, with Bono and the team, and that ultimately we enjoy it!  “We've got to enjoy it! "What an amazing season it's been so far, it's been super exciting for fans, massively engaging with Netflix around the world, new people coming in, we finally see two teams neck and neck which is amazing, and of course we want to win...  “But you've got to learn to let that not overtake everything in your life!" It’s starting to sound as if Lewis is gaining a mental edge in this battle… There has been some drama just before the start of the Turkish Grand Prix weekend, with the medical crew testing positive for Covid and needing to be replaced!  Formula One and the governing FIA said the pair had not travelled to Istanbul and a team from the all-electric Formula E championship was standing in for them... Formula E's Safety Car driver Bruno Correia will drive the medical car, while the Formula E medical delegate Bruno Franceschini will replace Roberts... South African van der Merwe and Briton Roberts helped former Haas driver Romain Grosjean make a 'miracle' escape from a fiery Bahrain Grand Prix crash last year and were hailed as heroes after the drama… Finally, Lando Norris is ready to put his Sochi heartbreak behind him, and is eager to get back in the car this weekend in Turkey… Norris said… “I’m very energised and excited for this weekend, we’ve come off the back of two very good weekends, both from Italy and of course Russia, especially with how Russia ended I just want to get back in the car and try again! “It’s not going to be a guarantee or anything that we’ll be able to do as well, we might not score another pole position or be able to get on the podium necessarily but we can still have a good weekend, get some points on the board and that’s the aim for this weekend! “I don’t know what kind of places we’ll be really strong at, what places we won’t be… “I would say I don’t think we were expected to be quite as good in Russia as what we were as well so for us it’s just waiting and seeing... “The anticipation is a nice thing in a way, but we’re not in a situation where we can say: here we’re going to be really good, here we’re going to be very good! “We have a rough idea but just going out and driving, things can always change and the confidence of a driver can always change massively, we’ll see this weekend if we have another good one...” All the best Lando, I think everyone will be wishing you well this weekend... That’s it for today, I’ll be back next week to look at all the action from the Turkish Grand Prix... We’re powered by the F1 Chronicle! The new complete power unit will take Sainz over his quota of engine and hybrid components for the year, meaning he will have to start the race from the back of the grid… Speaking before the race, the team said… "As was the case for Charles Leclerc in Russia, in Turkey Carlos Sainz will take a completely new power unit fitted with the new hybrid system... "Therefore, he will start from the back of the grid with the aim of climbing up the order to try and score some points! "Mattia Binotto will not attend the Turkish Grand Prix, but as was the case several times last year, the team principal will be based in the Maranello factory to focus on the development of next year's car… “He will, of course, follow all sessions and the race from the Remote Garage, with a permanent link to the team at Istanbul Park… That’s disappointing news, vamos Carlos. Speaking of changes for Turkey, Red Bull will be turning Japanese this weekend, at what would have been Honda’s last race in F1 in Japan! Red Bull will run a special livery, with team boss Christian Horner saying… “We had all been looking forward to giving Honda’s Japanese fans a chance to celebrate our extremely successful relationship in Formula One, on home soil at Suzuka...  “With the race falling victim to the pandemic, we just couldn’t let the weekend pass without paying tribute to Honda and its amazing home fans by bringing a little bit of its heritage to Istanbul! “The livery chosen for our cars pays homage to Honda’s remarkable F1 journey, and hopefully we can give fans another victory in those legendary colours this weekend… As is becoming tradition on this podcast, we can’t hear from Red Bull without also hearing from Mercedes! Toto Wolff has said his team are buzzing ahead of the Turkish Grand Prix! Speaking before the race, Wolff said… ‘There’s been a brilliant buzz in the team over the last week or so...  ‘Being back on the top step of the podium was an incredible feeling for all of us, and particularly after such a dramatic race weekend! ‘It was obviously made even more special by being Lewis’ 100th race win in Formula One!  ‘In the moment, milestones like this are exceptional, but I think it will take time for us to all realise just how remarkable this period of time is, and how privileged we all are to be part of this journey with him... ‘The final moments of the last race in Russia proved that anything can happen in F1 and fortunes can change in the blink of an eye! ‘This season is keeping all of us on our toes and that’s something we’re enjoying immensely, but it also means we have to be aggressive with our approach to the season, in order to maximise the points available... ‘That’s our focus for Turkey and beyond! ‘I know Lewis, Valtteri and the entire team are fired up for the battle that lies ahead, and we look set for another exciting race this weekend at Istanbul Park, where there are still many unknowns for us because of the track surface and weather conditions in 2020... ‘It’s an exciting track layout and a good one for racing, so I think we’ll be in for another spectacular twist in this brilliant F1 season… Finally, Fernando Alonso has credited his teammate Esteban Ocon with his resurgence, saying…  “It has been very close this year... “At the beginning of the year, it was not even close! ‘I was not up to speed, for sure...  ‘So, it was very helpful to have Esteban on top of his game! “To try to get up to speed with a very fast reference was a good thing for me...  “I could make my adaptation a little bit shorter thanks to Esteban as well, to have that reference. “He has helped make a really good environment in the team now, a good atmosphere... “I cannot ask for anything more at the moment! “Let’s try to push together to help Alpine in the constructors’ championship, it's going to be very tight with Aston, with AlphaTauri as well... “So we need the best of both in every weekend!" Speaking before the weekend, Norris said… “I’m looking forward to getting back to the track after a disappointing end to the last grand prix! “Since then I’ve been spending a lot of time in the simulator, learning from the experience in Russia, and I’m ready to go again... “The Turkish circuit is a real driver’s track and I’m glad we’re heading back there again after an exciting race last year! “The fans out there are really passionate too, so it’ll be great to see them all again!  “As always, we’ll be working hard to keep up the fight in both Championships...  “We know how important every race between now and the end of the season is, so we’ll be pushing hard to score as many points as possible!" That’s my boy, we believe in you Lando! Fernando Alonso could be forgiven for getting all nostalgic this weekend as he returns to Turkey, the scene of his famous 2006 battle with 7-Time World Champion Michael Schumacher... Although Schumacher’s Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa took the win, all eyes were on the battle for second, as Alonso just managed to hold off Schumacher in a pivotal moment in their battle for the 2006 World Championship! Speaking about his return to Turkey, Alonso said… “I have some nice memories of the Turkish Grand Prix! “It’s a circuit with a good mix of high-speed corners and overtaking opportunities...  “Turn 8 is a unique challenge and I look forward to tackling this corner in a modern-day Formula 1 car!  “I had a fun battle with Michael Schumacher there in 2006!  “He was right behind my gearbox exiting the final corner on the last lap...  “That was just one of a number of on track battles we had that season...  “We’ve had some good races this year and importantly we’ve been consistent! “We need to keep up this consistency and score more points for the team to finish the season on a high! After scoring points in Russia. Alfa Romeo are hoping for a Turkish Delight this weekend! Yes, I went there, deal with it… Ahead of the weekend team boss Frédéric Vasseur said… “Scoring points in Russia was a big confidence boost, finally bringing home a reward for all the hard work of the team! “We were able to make the most of the circumstances in the closing laps of the race...  ‘The conditions were difficult, but we achieved a good result!  ‘Now we have to keep up this level of performance, ready to make the most of the chances we may get! ‘Last year we did really well in qualifying in Istanbul, that will be a basis on which to build as we return to Turkey aiming to have another positive race...” Can they bring home the chocolates?  Boom tish, oh yeah baby, I’ll be here all week… Finally, another driver looking to bounce back after Russia is Pierre Gasly! The Frenchman missed out in Russia, and wants to make amends this weekend… Gasly said… “We missed a great opportunity in Russia, as we did not make the best of the chances we had...  “We have worked since then to understand what we could have done better in order to be as well prepared as possible and back near the front again, starting this weekend in Turkey! “Last year was my first ever time driving at Istanbul Park...  “It’s a layout I really liked! “It’s quite unique with interesting corners, a very technical track, complicated when it comes to the driving and I very much enjoyed it last year!! “I’m looking forward to it, because it was a really cool track to drive with several different and interesting lines to take through the corners, so I hope we can be competitive and close the gap to Alpine, who are currently in front of us...” That’s it for today, I’ll be back tomorrow with more news ahead of the Turkish Grand Prix... Hello and welcome to F1 News Today with Tillie!  Let’s take a look at what’s making news in the world of Formula 1 today… 1) A Third Of 2022 Season Could Feature Sprint Races 20 2021 Turkish Grand Prix Tyre Compounds 3) Lando Norris was 'depressed a lot of the time' as an F1 rookie  4) Wolff says DNFs are a ‘no-go’ if Hamilton is to win record 8th crown We’re powered by the F1 Chronicle, make sure you visit f1chronicle.com for more news, and subscribe to the F1 Chronicle YouTube channel so you never miss an episode of F1 News Today.  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visit the Grid Talk store ►  https://f1chronicle.com/store/ Subscribe ► https://www.youtube.com/c/Formula1GridTalk  Follow ► Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/F1ChronicleOfficial/  Twitter – https://twitter.com/F1Chronicle  Tumblr – https://f1chronicle.tumblr.com/  Artwork ► Avatar by Chereverie Twitter: @mewdokas Tumblr: chereverie Instagram: chereverie.art ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Transcription ► Hello and welcome to F1 News Today with Tillie!  Right, let’s take a look at what’s making news in the world of Formula 1 today… While it’s still all to play for in 2021, looking ahead to 2022, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has said there will be 23 races and up to a third of races next year could have sprint qualifying races! Domenicali said… “I can anticipate that, for sure, the calendar will be done with 23 races...  “Of course we will be very respectful towards the Covid regulations issued around the world from the different governments...  “But that is our aim that F1 can give this sign of hope and to go to normal things to enjoy! “The idea is to make sure there is the right rhythm to the calendar...  “There are of course considerations related to periods to make sure logistically the flow has to be right.” “One thing I can tell you, without discovering too many things is that next year the season will start in the middle of March and will finish in the middle of November… “We said at the beginning of the year there would be three sprint tests this year to make sure we have the right plan for the future… “The vast majority of the comments we received were super positive!  “Promoters are super happy because there is something new and important on Friday and Saturday and Sunday!” Well sis nobody asked me, did they?? I for one don’t rate the sprint qualifying races at all. For me, pole is there to be won with the best lap time on a Saturday! There, I said it… Ok, and moving on! For the Turkish Grand Prix, which was added to the calendar to replace Singapore this year, the three tyres in the middle of the Pirelli range have been nominated… C2 is the P Zero White hard, C3 is the P Zero Yellow medium, and C4 is the P Zero Red soft… This is one step softer than the nomination made for the Turkish Grand Prix last year, which was held in November after a nine-year absence from the calendar. Speaking of the compound selections, Pirelli head of F1 Mario Isola said… “Turkey was one of the most dramatic and unpredictable races of last season, mostly due to a very slippery track as a consequence of low grip from the new asphalt! “The slipperiness of the circuit, exacerbated by the rain, caught many people by surprise, and that’s why this year we’ve opted for a softer tyre nomination...  “Also, with the race taking place more than a month earlier, this should result in higher temperatures… “Following our tyre nomination, the track has undergone a high-pressure water cleaning process, which should lead to greater roughness and more grip, so there’s also the possibility that with softer compounds we will face higher wear levels compared to last year! “That’s something we will only find out when we get there, so the work done in free practice will be very useful… “Because everything was so new last year, we took the conservative option of coming with the hardest tyres...  “Going a step softer this weekend will probably open up the possibility of a few different strategies as well! Speaking on breakfast TV in the UK, McLaren’s Lando Norris has opened up about the mental health issues he has been dealing with in F1...  As a rookie in 2019, Norris battled depression and anxiety, and is now sharing his story to hopefully help others going through similar struggles…  On the ITV show This Morning, Norris said… "I guess people, from when they just watch TV, they don't realise many things that a driver goes through... "And it's a bit of shame, but there are more programmes now where you get to see what the driver is like behind the scenes, and the amount of pressure and stress that they have to cope with! "Especially at my age, coming into Formula 1 at 19, there's a lot of eyes on you. So, dealing with all these kinds of things, took its toll on me... "Feeling like I don't know what's next?  “If this goes wrong, if I don't go out in the next session and perform, what's going to happen? "What's the outcome of all of this? Am I going to be in Formula 1 next year? What am I going to do because I'm not really good at many other things in life? "So, just all of that, and then just feeling depressed a lot of the time that if I have a bad weekend, I just think I'm not good enough and things like that... "When they start adding up over the season, and then the social media side of it all, that can just really start to hurt you..." I’m so happy to see Lando has come out the other side, and has the courage to stand up and be a voice for others… Great work Lando! Finally, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has said Lewis Hamilton can’t afford to have a DNF if he wants to win the championship this season.  This gives the team some tough decisions to make on whether or not they change Hamilton’s engine, and take the penalty that will bring…  Wolff said… "Definitely we are in a phase of assessment, how to continue this season in terms of power units… "I think we haven't only made the cautionary engine change for Bottas because we felt we wanted to stockpile, but also because we want to understand the engine's performance, and that has given us some question marks... “At the moment, we're just taking it one race weekend at a time and we will reassess the performance of the power units and then take decisions… “I think neither driver and neither team can have any comfort in the current situation, because there is just no gap in terms of points and I think that this is going to go very long! “Reliability versus performance is always the fine line that you need to get right, and as I said before, DNFing obviously is a no-go for the championship, and nobody, neither us nor our competitors can afford a zero-point race weekend... Something everyone has loved to see in recent years is the resurgence of McLaren, with the team battling from the back of the grid up to third in the Constructor’s Championship...  However, Andreas Seidl feels his team are still behind Mercedes and Red Bull in every area! Seidl told The Express… “Despite what happened at the end of the race in Russia, we have a team that is most of the time spot on with the strategy, with tyres and so on during a race, so I am very happy with the progress we are making! “But of course, compared to the teams that are ahead of us in the Championship, we still have deficits, I would say, in all areas... “That is why it is important after a weekend like Monza, for example, or after the pole position in Russia, that the first thing you have to do is analyse what you could have done better because there is always something you can do better! “The moment you are satisfied with what you have achieved is the start of the decline so that is how we approach it...” After years in the doldrums, it’s beautiful to watch this new approach from McLaren… Jost Capito believes signing Alex Albon proves Williams aren’t a B-team, but says that’s not why he was chosen. Speaking with The Race, Capito said… “It shows and confirms that we are not a B-team... “It’s not important for us to send this message to anybody, it’s just that it shows that we really do what is best for the team and we decide it within the team! “We are not driven by anybody else than ourselves... “That this message goes then outside it’s obvious, but we did not do that because of the message!” “As a B team, you will never be world champion...” “And if you make yourself dependent on any other company or any other team, then you will never win the world championship and you will not be credible within the team with having this message! “With that, you give up on being world champion, and you just say you want to be part of the show...  “That’s it!” Finally, with the Constructor’s Championship battle going down to the wire, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez has vowed to turn his season around, saying… “There is still a long way to go! “I have been in this position before and I will turn things around. I have no doubts... “Every weekend it can turn around so I am looking forward to the rest of the year and we are in a big battle in the Constructors’...” “I think the pace has improved quite a bit in the last few weekends...  “We just have to make sure we get the final bit together to transform the results! “We have done it before and I am sure we can do this again...  “I fully believe in the team, there is still a long way to go!” We’re powered by the F1 Chronicle! That’s right, Qatar will fill the last open spot on the calendar with a race to be held there from the nineteenth to the twenty first of November this year...  But wait, there’s more! A 10 year deal has also been reached for Qatar to host a grand prix from 2023 on, with just the venue to be confirmed.  When the deal was announced, President and CEO of Formula 1 Stefano Domenicali said… “We are very pleased to welcome Qatar to the Formula 1 calendar this season and for the longer term from 2023! “The Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation and Authorities have been incredible, and have moved at great speed to ensure the race can take place this season at the Losail Circuit, famous to many as the host of MotoGP... “We have shown that we can continue to adapt, and there is huge interest in our sport and the hope from many locations to have a Grand Prix!  “The huge effort from all the teams, F1 and the FIA has made it possible to deliver a 22 race calendar, something that is very impressive during a challenging year and something we can all be proud of!” Hmmmm, first Saudi Arabia, now Qatar… Well sis, it seems we really do race for money!  Sighhhh…. In more melancholy news, Lewis Hamilton has revealed that Valtteri Bottas is the first teammate he has really been able to communicate with!! Asked during an interview with Sky Italia which driver he felt he had encountered the biggest rivalry with, Hamilton answered with a discussion about his teammates... Lewis said… “Honestly, it depends on the moment of my life I was in... “When I was just a kid I met Fernando Alonso...  “I was enthusiastic and talented but I didn’t know how to handle everything! “Then I found myself in different positions with Heikki, with Jenson and with Nico...  “I learned different things from each of them... “Each one was a challenge! “You can never ignore your teammate because you will learn from him or vice versa...  “You can make mistakes...  “I wouldn’t change anything about my journey alongside them, for better or for worse! “I recently commented about my current teammate and said he was the best teammate, but you have to see what that definition means... “We are in a sport where we try to win two different championships – we both try to win the Drivers’ title, but our job is to win the Constructors’ title too, so we have to work together! “For the first time, I had a teammate with whom I really communicated... “You know, ‘I felt this…’, ‘I had this feeling’...  “Without hiding anything from each other, trying to improve each other, helping each other to be our best version! “It had never happened with other drivers before. It’s something unique! “And as a human being, it’s fantastic! “Once we get off the track we talk like gentlemen. No tricks...” I’m not crying, you’re crying!! I really feel for Lewis, and hope he can have a similar relationship with Russell next year… I’ve been talking a lot about everyone’s favourite Russian this week, but this one did give me a chuckle…  Nikita Mazepin has said his dad could turn an F1 team into gold if he were to buy one… Speaking with Sport Bild, Mazepin said… “That would be an interesting option for him. He made gold out of everything he started!! “But I am very loyal to Haas...  “So if he were to buy a team it would be exciting to see how they duel, and hopefully beat him! “I’m currently part of a team that is 10th out of 10 places in the Constructors’ Championship...  “But, I said I am loyal!!  “I want success with Haas.” “I have my place because I’m a racing driver and the team see me as an asset... “The reason for the sponsorship is the company sees Formula 1 as an opportunity for new business.  “I’m the only Russian driver, and of course a Russian company will always want to invest in a team that has a fellow countryman!!” Seems there would be a tough decision for Mazepin Senior to make then…  Turn a team into gold with a proper driver, or languish at the back with his own son behind the wheel!! This could get interesting… Finally, Alfa Romeo boss Fred Vasseur believes Lando Norris should have received a penalty after crossing the pit entry white line during the Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix. Speaking with motorsport dot com, Vasseur said… "I'm very sad for Lando, because he did a fantastic weekend in Sochi... "But then it's not because you like the guy and he deserved to win that we have to change the rule!! “The rule is crystal clear, that if you cross the line, you have to be penalised... "It was the case on tons of occasions, for 10 times less than this, with Yuki in Spielberg, with Kimi last year in Mugello, and exactly the same condition with Lewis in Hockenheim in 2019!! "I will say that it's even worse in these conditions, because when Tsunoda put a wheel on the white line in Spielberg, it was not a safety issue, it was not a gain of time, because like when you are at the pit exit you go straight if you touch the white line, you are not faster. But he got penalised! "And nobody complained about this that day, because the rule was clear, you put the wheel on the line, you are penalised... "Last week, the advantage for Lando was mega!!  ‘Because in this situation either you take five seconds or you do another lap in the wet on slicks, and you're losing perhaps 25 seconds. "And probably the five-second penalty is not enough...  “I perfectly remember that when Lewis took the penalty in Hockenheim, 99% of the paddock complained that it was too small!! "Now we are starting to find let's say, not reasons, but the explanation around the incident, and we are looking stupid!!  “The rule is crystal clear...  Let it go Alfa! The close battle has led Wolff and Horner to engage in a war of words through the media at times this year -- Wolff called Horner a windbag at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix -- but Horner insists he is enjoying the personal battle with his opposite number! Horner told Channel 4… "Of course this is the first time Mercedes, and the first time Toto has even been in a situation where he has been challenged... "He's been in a situation where he came into the team, the drivers were already signed, the engine was already in place! "He's done a great job to keep that team winning, but there has been no real competition...  “So this is the first time it's a true scrap, a true competition! "And there is a respect I think between the teams, but I think we operate in very different ways...  “I very much want to be on the front line!  “I sit on the pit wall with the strategists and the engineers, Toto will sit in the garage next to the press guy... "So they are different functions, they are different roles, they are different outlooks...  “But of course, the competition is fierce!  “I think that's the key thing about this championship... "We are loving the competition and the more Toto gets wound up, the more fun it becomes! Well sis, things between these two iconic teams sure are getting spicey! Speaking of iconic, Mick Schumacher has said he would love to revive the iconic Schumacher Ferrari relationship one day… Speaking on the ‘In the fast lane’ podcast, Mick said… “I wouldn’t call it pressure… “I think it’s nice to be able to call or just say I’m a part of that family!  “To be part of that whole company is great... “Then obviously, with all the history, where people combine with Ferrari and Schumacher, I think it’s a very special combination and I think hopefully something that can be revived in the future!!” “Obviously I know what I have to do to prove myself, so they have always been keeping a very close eye on me and helping me in very different ways...” Well you know, it’s something we would all just love to see! Speaking of Ferrari, Mattia Binotto was reluctant to put a number on the time gain made by Ferrari with its upgraded Formula 1 power unit, but said it offered “a step” in performance… Ferrari debuted an upgraded hybrid system for its power unit on Charles Leclerc’s car at the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi last weekend... The updated power unit was understood to be worth less than 10bhp, but Ferrari made clear prior to its introduction that its greater purpose was to help lay the foundations for 2022 and beyond! After the race, Binotto said… “I don’t want to quantify it... “I think that is a fact of our confidentiality! “It is a step in terms of performance, but as Charles and Laurent Mekies said already, more importantly for us, certainly it has pushed forward as much as we could with that new technology! “It will certainly help in the view of 2022 in terms of the experience we can do... “But I’m happy now that Charles has got it and got it for the rest of the season, which still is a step!” If Ferrari keep making steps, can you imagine a four-team battle for the championship next season? I’m excited already! Finally, yesterday we spoke about Nikita Mazepin getting a slap from Michael Masi over his amateur driving in Sochi.  Today Williams driver Nicholas Latifi has come out in defense of the Russian, saying he doesn’t feel his driving crosses the line! Latifi said… “He was always moving very late, nothing that was worth me coming on the radio… “But that’s kind of Nikita’s style, the way he drives! “It didn’t seem like anything over the limit for me, but he does always leave it until the last minute which isn’t the best, but that’s how he is...” Well, Latifi may accept it, but I sure don’t! There is no need to drive like a knob when you’re so far off the pace every week... We’re powered by the F1 Chronicle! Breathe in… breathe out… Lando will be ok… Right, first up, F1 managing director Ross Brawn feels that with at least two more seasons in the sport Lewis Hamilton has at least 20 more wins in his locker! Brawn said… ‘It’s a milestone no one thought anyone would ever reach! ‘Michael’s tally of 91 was so far ahead of what anyone else had ever done at that point that it never seemed conceivable that anyone would get near it... ‘But then Lewis beat it – and now Lewis has 100 wins...  ‘There is nothing stopping him! ‘Who knows where it’s going to end up? ‘He’s with us for another couple of years at least – and he will win races every year...  ‘I don’t think we could predict 200 wins, but I think we could certainly predict 20 more as he’s still massively competitive and motivated!  ‘It’s just staggering and congratulations to him, as it’s a centenary that no one ever thought would be achieved! Hmmmm, I’m not sure it’s possible. With the new regulations coming in, anything could happen next season! What do you think sis? Further down the grid, it was great to see Kimi Raikkonen back on the weekend!  The Flying Finn had a strong race, though despite his best finish of 2021 he expected more!  Sorry I can’t do the relaxed Kimi drawl, you will have to imagine Kimi saying... “I’d much rather be a bit higher up...  ‘We had a good start and got some positions and then followed the Alpine most of the race!  ‘I felt the car was behaving well, but we were a bit too slow to really make progress… “And most of the race we were behind him and…  ‘I felt we had more speed but when the straight opened up, I had no chance to overtake him! ‘Luckily we made the correct call, felt it was too wet already, and we were one of the early ones to come in to change tyres and it paid off in the end! “For sure our tyres were not the best in the wet conditions but we pitted in the right moment and then we had some decent speed in the last couple of laps and managed to pass some cars...  “Not too bad! Another thing we love to see is the Williams resurgence! After years in the doldrums, team boss Jost Capito feels Williams’ major recent improvement is down to a more “proactive and aggressive” approach, saying… “We have changed our organisation, we have changed communication, we have changed responsibilities... “We work more as a team, we have changed our strategy and approach at the weekend and we have become a bit more proactive and aggressive – not just defensive! “We have brought more pride into the team and said we can do things differently... “We can try something that maybe others can’t try because they are in front and that would be risky... “We took the risk a few times and it worked! “It shows how much we have improved as a team in terms of communication...  “I’m surprised how much faster you can make the car without really improving it! Could Williams snag another podium in 2021? We sure hope so! Finally, everyone’s favourite Russian Nikita Mazepin has been warned his unsportsmanlike conduct won’t be tolerated after another of his amateur moves nearly put Yuki Tsunoda into the wall on Sunday.  He was shown the black and white flag, with race director Michael Masi saying… “Going through Turn 12, it was just the move that he came across so late with Yuki, who was overtaking with DRS! “It’s one of the things that we’ve said a few times and that we’ve issued black-and-whites for before. “It’s unsportsmanlike conduct and not something that we would tolerate! I’m not sure why any of us have to tolerate Mazepin being on the grid to be honest! Oh, money, that’s why... We’re powered by the F1 Chronicle! He’s still in his feelings too, telling ESPN… “Obviously unhappy... devastated in a way..."  "I guess we made a call to stay out and we stand by that call, of course, it was the wrong one at the end!! "I made the decision as much as the team...  “More they thought I should box and I decided to stay out! "My decision, I thought it was the way to go..." "I had the confidence beforehand... “I've felt capable of doing it for a while, but just a bit of heartbreak you know... "I felt like I did everything I could even when it got tricky! "I made a couple of mistakes and still kept Lewis behind me...  “The laps I was out, before Lewis boxed, it was perfectly fine for the tyres I was on... “I got told the rain would be the same amount, but it obviously got a lot wetter than we as a team expected!" Chin up Lando, everyone in F1 wants to give you a big hug… From tears to cheers now… Red Bull boss Christian Horner feels as if Max Verstappen’s second-place finish in Russia was like a victory, saying… "Today was like a victory for us… "To come from 20th on the grid to second, I think if anybody had offered us that... we would have bitten your arm off." "Max got the call right to go on the inters and it worked out well for him!"   "The rain the last five laps came at the right time..." "To come away from two Mercedes strongholds with only a two-point deficit in the drivers' championship is hugely encouraging! "I don't think there's any circuit that stands out as strongly as Russia and Monza for Mercedes...  “You could say it's 50-50 in what's left on the table!" Looking across the pit lane, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff would most likely agree with Christian Horner that the battle is fifty fifty, which is much too close for comfort for Wolff, who looking ahead to the Turkish Grand Prix, said… "I think neither driver or team can have any comfort in the current situation because there is just no gap in terms of points..." "I've stopped trying to anticipate whether Turkey is a historically strong race for us or not because with the new regulation everything has changed so much!" "But definitely, we knew that Monza and Sochi would be coming more towards us and the reality is that we are where we are..." An unusually downbeat Wolff went on to talk about an impending engine change for Lewis Hamilton, which would see the 7-time champion have to start from the back of the grid… On the engine situation, Wolff said… "We are in a phase of assessment how to continue this season in terms of power units..." "Reliability versus performance is always the fine line that you need to get right!" "Nobody, neither us nor our competitors, can afford a zero-point race weekend…” Well that concludes this episode of F1 News Today with Tillie.  We’re definitely approaching squeaky bum time in the 2021 Formula 1 season, aren’t we? Lando Norris was on course to take his first-ever win in F1! Then, the heavens opened, and washed away his dreams… We could only watch as Lando slipped and slid back to the pits, as he eventually finished seventh! After the race, a dejected Norris said... "It wasn't the race or the result we wanted in the end!  “I made a good start and we had a good first stint.  “Right at the end when the rain started, we made the call not to box and that cost us everything!!!  “We made the decision that was right at the time for the conditions at the time. “It was my call, along with the information from the team, and together we need to review what we could've done better!  “It's incredibly disappointing of course, because we've been strong all weekend, and I felt comfortable with the pace and the car today...  “The team has done a great job and I want to thank them for all their hard work!  “Of course, the result is not a reflection of our weekend, but there are a lot of positives we can take, and now we need to analyse, reset and bounce back in Turkey!!” Hugs Lando, there will be better days ahead! Now onto a piece of F1 history… 100 grand prix wins for Lewis Hamilton! The milestone victory also put the 7-time champion into the lead of the Driver’s Championship as that battle looks set to go down to the wire!!! After the race, Hamilton said ‘Wow... 100!  ‘It's taken a long time and I wasn't even sure the 100th would come!  ‘Going to bed last night I wasn't the happiest with the job I did yesterday...  ‘I watched the replay over and over again... they were subtle mistakes but I was so determined to put things right when I woke up this morning!! ‘Today was tough...  ‘I lost a lot of ground at the start, just trying to stay out of trouble.  ‘I was patient and at the end, when the rain came, I didn't want to let Lando go by boxing! ‘Of course, I didn't know what the rain was doing, it was just my feeling but I'm incredibly grateful to the strategy team for the job they did today!!  ‘Getting anywhere near 100 victories wouldn't be possible without the hard work of the men and women here and back at the factory, I'm so grateful to them - it just feels so special!!! ‘Lando did an amazing job today, he had incredible pace and he's doing such a great job for McLaren. ‘It was bittersweet to see my old team ahead, they're doing so well powered by Mercedes and it's good to see them united again...  ‘Max did a good job to come up from second to last, the battle continues and we know we need to be on top form over the remaining races!!’ Speaking of Max, the Dutchman put in a superb recovery drive to move all the way from 20th to second, and also managed not to hit Lewis!! After the race, Max was well pleased with his podium finish, saying... “Wow, we will definitely take that result!  “Of course to come from last to second is very good and when I woke up this morning I definitely didn’t expect this result!  “To finish where we did with the penalty we had, we didn’t lose as many points as we could have so as a Team we did a really good job...  “It was a crucial call to change to the inters, it was really slippery on track and we made a great decision with the timing and took the right lap to pit...  “A lot of things can happen when you’re starting from the back of the grid, especially on the first lap when other cars are fighting each other, but we stayed out of trouble, kept it clean, and managed our race very well...  “The race itself was not very easy, it was difficult to pass other cars and once you got stuck it was easy to damage your tyres, but luckily, in the end the rain helped us make the last jump in positions!” Finally, it was great to see Carlos Sainz make the most of a strong weekend, as the Spaniard rounded out the podium.  It was a bitter-sweet result for Sainz, who after the race spoke about wanting more... "This was a tricky but positive weekend for me, with a good quali and a strong race where I gave absolutely everything!!  “We made a perfect start from the dirty side, braking late into turn 2 and risking it on the outside of Lando to get into the lead...  “Unfortunately, we suffered from graining and couldn’t hold P1 for much longer and had to pit early... "After the first stop, we had a very good stint, managing the Hard tyre in traffic and then pushing in clean air, on course for a reasonably comfortable P3 before the rain came and made everything a lot trickier!!  “With the used Hard it was clear to me we needed to box for Inters and together with the team we made the right decision at the right moment, regaining P3! "It’s a happy podium but I think as a team we need to keep analysing what we can do better to make sure next time a Ferrari is leading we are less vulnerable... “We’ve got some time before the next race so we will keep pushing!!” Well that concludes this episode of F1 News Today with Tillie! First up, in a move that surprised absolutely nobody, Haas confirmed Nikita Mazepin will continue with the team in 2022. I’m shocked… The team also confirmed Mick Schumacher will stay with the team next season too, squashing rumours of a potential move to Alfa Romeo.  Speaking about the driver pairing for next season, team principal Guenther Steiner said “We knew we wanted continuity behind the wheel in 2022, and I’m happy to confirm exactly that with Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin competing for Uralkali Haas F1 Team next year. “2021 has afforded both drivers the opportunity to learn Formula 1 – and as rookies – they’ve done a lot of that this year. “It’s been a tough season for sure with the package we’ve had, but at the same time, they’ve both embraced the challenge and worked closely with the team, to learn our processes and adapt to the rigours of a Formula 1 campaign, and all that brings – both internally and externally. “Now as we look ahead to the 2022 season, we’re confident we can move forward as a team and give Mick and Nikita a competitive race package to make the next step in their Formula 1 careers.” Next up, in news we love to hear, Kimi Raikkonen has overcome covid, and will return to the cockpit of his Alfa Romeo in Russia this weekend. After missing the last two races, the Flying Finn is happy to be back to work, saying “I’m pleased to be back in the car after missing two rounds. “Obviously, nobody wants to test positive, but it happened and we had to follow the rules. “But that is all in the past, and now my focus is on Sochi. “The team has shown some potential in the last few races, now we need to convert that into a good result. “I don’t think being back will feel any different, I just want to get on with my job and hopefully have a good race." Looking now to the title fight, Max Verstappen has hit out at 'hypocrites' who said he walked away from Lewis Hamilton after the pair came together at Monza two weeks ago. After the incident, which took both drivers out of the race, Hamilton said he was surprised Verstappen did not check to see if he was OK. Max, who has a three-place grid penalty to serve at this Sunday's Russian Grand Prix for his role in the collision, was annoyed at the implication that he had walked away. When asked what he made of the suggestion he had not checked on Hamilton, Max said: "I mean, there are a lot of hypocrites in the world that's for sure. "I jumped out of the car, I looked to the left and he's of course still trying to reverse, shaking the wheel, trying to get out from under my car so I think he was absolutely fine. "Also, flying to America on Monday or Tuesday to attend a Gala, I think you only do that if you feel fine so I think already there, everything was all under control." My word, things are really starting to heat up between these two. Finally, master of the mind games Lewis Hamilton is turning the screw on his title rival, stating he empathises with the intense pressure Max must be feeling as the two battle for the championship. While it is the first time the Dutchman has been involved in a title fight, it is not Hamilton’s first time at the dance, that’s for sure. We have seen the seven-time champion prove to be mentally tougher than most of his opponents over the years, and the Brit is ramping up the pressure on his rival, saying "Naturally, we are battling for a championship. "I remember what it was like battling for my first championship, and obviously I'm fighting for something like my 10th battle. “I remember what it was like, and the pressure and experiences that you go with, so I empathise with that. "I think what is important is that we continue to race hard, but fair. “I have no doubt that we will both be professional and learn from the past. "Obviously Max won't admit to it and I'm not going to make an assumption, but I'm just saying I remember what it was like when I had my first one, and it definitely mounted up. “It was difficult, it was intense, I was going through a lot of different emotions, I didn't always handle it the best and that's to be expected. "There's a lot of pressure, you're working in a big team, there's a lot of self-expectation and pressure because the desire to win is huge. “So I'm just saying I empathise and I understand that, but I know that we will continue to grow from this." Well here’s hoping the duo can keep it on the track this weekend, and give us a thrilling final eight races of 2022. I’m tipping a Valtteri Bottas win in Russia, the Finn has been flying after the weight of his contract situation was sorted. Who are you tipping? Ferrari said they would be introducing an updated hybrid system in Sochi, mainly to gain experience with it for the 2022 car project. A spokesperson for the team said… "A great deal of effort has gone into this... both technically and logistically... and so as to be able to use it as soon as possible, its introduction will be staggered between the drivers. "Charles will be the first to have the new hybrid system.  “This decision is a precautionary measure relating to the potential risk of using the battery pack damaged in his Hungarian GP accident. "In Sochi, Leclerc will have a brand new power unit and will therefore start from the back of the grid." Speaking of engines, Honda has revealed they have released their final major upgrade to their engine for the season, as the team looks to beat Mercedes to the 2021 Constructor’s Championship. Honda's final season in Formula 1 has seen them bring forward their 2022 engine by a year in a bid to help Red Bull win a first championship title since 2013. Yasuaki Asaki, Honda F1's head of Power Unit development, explained: "This new E.S has been developed in a project that has taken several years, with an aim to combine improvements in energy efficiency, with significant reductions in weight. "In what will be the company’s final season in the sport, Honda F1 has managed to introduce the new E.S – fitted with a lighter, low-resistance, highly efficient and ultra-high power battery cell – just in time for the start of the second half of the season. "In order to achieve the ultimate goal of defeating Mercedes and winning the championship before leaving F1 at the end of the 2021 season, we recognised the need to enhance performance. “As such, the development plan for the new E.S was brought forward substantially from the original goal of 2022, to introduction during the 2021 season." Moving on to McLaren ace Daniel Ricciardo, the Monza winner was thrilled to get his first win in three years as he led the team to a 1-2 finish in Italy. However, the affable Aussie insists he has turned the page and has his sights set firmly on further success in Russia. Speaking ahead of the Sochi weekend, Ricciardo said “A week on from Monza, it still feels good thinking about being back on that top step of the podium. “We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect way to end a triple-header. “I loved competing at the front of the grid and having the chance to fight for the win. “The one-two finish is a product of hard work throughout the team and from myself. “Since the start of my journey with McLaren I’ve been working through the challenges that come with adapting to a new car, but the team has been really supportive throughout. "It’s great to have a result that completes that picture, and to have the team back in the winner’s circle has been a ride and I’ve only been a part of it for six months. “It’s been the boost we all needed. “I’ve definitely taken time to enjoy the moment but now it’s time to focus on Russia. “I want to build on my Monza performance this weekend and will be pushing to score important points to keep up the fight with our competitors. “Sochi can be a tricky circuit to make a move, so it’s important to make the most of qualifying to give us the best chance for points come Sunday!” Finally, Renault have admitted to scoring an own goal in recent years, and that their self-made problems mean they do not currently supply any engines to other teams on the grid! Speaking to Auto Motor und Sport, Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi said “It is a sign. “Apparently, we no longer have any credit on the scene. “You have to look at it soberly. “Our engine was no longer attractive to customers. “In the past, we often scored an own goal from a technical point of view because we adapted our drive units too closely to the wishes of the customers for their chassis. “This has led to friction losses and tied up capacities. “If then the customer was not satisfied, we developed in two directions, with which we harmed ourselves. “In an ideal world, you should build an engine and customers have to live with that. “Then the factory team also has a benefit because it receives more data. “Right now we benefit from focusing on ourselves. “Once everything has worked out, it would be interesting to have one or two customers again.” That concludes this episode of F1 News Today with Tillie. Ahead of the Russian Grand Prix weekend, Wolff said 'After a demanding and intense triple-header, we are re-energised and ready to go.  ‘Last time out in Monza was bittersweet - a commanding performance and strong result for Valtteri but a feeling of missed points for Lewis, who had the potential to fight for the win.  ‘The pleasing thing is that the W12 looks competitive and with just eight races to go, now is the time to use our experience and focus on the details and processes which will get us over the line. 'We're looking forward to racing again in Russia, it is a circuit we've gone well at over the years and both our drivers have enjoyed great results in Sochi.  ‘We're hoping to continue our run of success in Russia but know that this year is an entirely different beast, and we're expecting another intense weekend. 'Last year, this race was one of the first to welcome fans back to the grandstands and it was incredible to feel the passion and buzz of the crowds again.  ‘We've just been treated to fantastic support in Spa, Zandvoort and Monza, and this weekend will be no different. 'Our aim is to pull together a strong weekend, starting in FP1 and building one session at a time.  ‘Lewis is in the tenth championship battle of his F1 career, and he is laser-focused on what he needs to deliver in the next eight races.  ‘As for Valtteri, he's driving better than ever, like we saw in Monza - and he will be flat out every weekend.  ‘There's a calm determination about the team right now and the business end of a season, fighting for championships, is exactly what we enjoy the most.' With two weeks between Monza and Russia, the collision between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in Italy has been replayed and dissected over and over by media and fans alike.  One man who is looking forward, not back, is Verstappen, who insists the best way to keep making progress is to keep pushing. In his pre-race comments, Max said 'I think you can reflect all you like but it’s important to look forward and keep pushing.  ‘I still believe it was a racing incident, but we have been given a three-place grid penalty and we just have to work with it now.  ‘The race in Monza definitely wasn’t our day for many reasons, but now I just plan to look forward to Sochi. 'It was great to finish second there last year in Sochi especially as it has never been a good track for us as a team.  ‘We have been more competitive this year and we have a better package at the moment so it will be interesting to see how competitive we can be there this year.  ‘It will be of course completely different to Monza and it looks like there might be some rain this weekend.  ‘The track itself and the layout is completely different to the previous races so I’m definitely looking forward to going back there and seeing what we can do. 'The penalty is of course not ideal but nothing is lost, that’s how I look at it.  As for the Drivers’ Championship, we still have a lot of races ahead of us and it’s a very tiny margin. ‘We will try and make the most from the weekend and work with the package we have.’ One team making moves ahead of 2022 is Aston Martin, with the announcement that former McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh is set to join the team in the new role of CEO of Aston Martin Performance Technologies from October 1. The new position means Whitmarsh will oversee the strategic director of the Aston Martin Formula One team as well as setting up a new arm of the company that will use its experience in F1 to provide engineering and manufacturing services. Speaking about his appointment Whitmarsh said "I am delighted to have been appointed by Lawrence to the position of Group Chief Executive Officer of the new Aston Martin Performance Technologies, from October 1st 2021. "I have known and admired Lawrence for many years, and I have always been extremely impressed by his formidable business acumen and his seemingly inexhaustible ambition.  “Equally, I have always respected 'Team Silverstone', if I can call it that, which has often punched above its weight under its various previous incarnations, and which now has the weight with which to punch harder than ever before. "Lawrence intends for Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team to win Formula One World Championships, plain and simple, and I would not have joined him in that endeavour unless I was utterly convinced that it was an entirely achievable aim.  “I know what it takes to win in Formula One, and, inspired by Lawrence's leadership and backed by the skill, passion and resolve of the workforce, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure that our team becomes the winning operation that Lawrence is determined that it should be. "Last but far from least, I am very enthused about the formation of the new Aston Martin Performance Technologies, under which corporate umbrella Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team will sit, and I am excited about the prospect of developing and applying our technical capabilities and intellectual property as a successful and profitable new business." Another team looking to 2022 is Haas, as the American team made a controversial call to bypass any development of their 2021 challenger, while also hiring an all-rookie line-up of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, with the aim of focusing on a return to form under the new 2022 regulations. It was a risky move to make, especially considering the teams slide down the pecking order in recent years, but team boss Guenther Steiner is confident that their owner was pleased with what he saw after the pair made a recent visit to the Maranello design hub to see how the VF-22 was taking shape. Steiner told motorsportweek.com “These are the things that keep me and the whole team going – the future. “Going there with Gene, he hasn’t been in Italy for three years, due to COVID-19 he couldn’t come for the last few years. “I showed him around and how we’ve changed over, how we’ve organised ourselves and how Simone Resta is leading the group. “I think he was happy with what he saw, and again he looks forward to 2022 like all of us. “I think we will be ready. Where we end up, I don’t know yet but for sure we will make steps forward.” That concludes this episode of F1 News Today with Tillie. Hello and welcome to F1 News Today with Tillie!  Let’s get straight into it, and take a look at what’s making news in the world of Formula 1… 1) Pirelli announce tyre selection for Russian Grand Prix 2) Williams concern over helmet cam privacy 3) Prost says ‘no’ to reverse grid races 4) Max Verstappen’s ‘yield or crash’ philosophy We’re powered by the F1 Chronicle, make sure you visit f1chronicle.com for more news ahead of the 2021 Russian Grand Prix, and subscribe to the F1 Chronicle YouTube channel so you never miss an episode of F1 News Today.  See you tomorrow for the next update!  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visit the Grid Talk store ►  https://f1chronicle.com/store/ Subscribe ► https://www.youtube.com/c/Formula1GridTalk  Follow ► Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/F1ChronicleOfficial/  Twitter – https://twitter.com/F1Chronicle  Tumblr – https://f1chronicle.tumblr.com/  Artwork ► Avatar by Chereverie twitter: @mewdokas tumblr: chereverie instagram: chereverie.art ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Transcription ► First up, Pirelli has announced they will be running the three softest compounds in their range, with C3 as the P Zero White hard, C4 as the P Zero Yellow medium, and C5 as the P Zero Red soft.  This is the same nomination that was made in Russia last season, when the event was held at a similar time of year. Speaking about the selections, Pirelli’s head of F1 Mario Isola said: “We’ve seen in the past that there’s been quite a lot of different strategic thinking, with all three compounds on the grid at the start of the race and varying tactics during the grand prix.  “Last year, the soft C5 performed better than expected and graining levels were reduced over all compounds between free practice and the race, due to high track evolution.  “In the past, some drivers have even tried a very early switch to the hardest compound and attempted to run all the way to the end, but last year this wasn’t quite possible as these days the asphalt has matured and is not as smooth as it was in the past.  “With the extra rubber on track from the very full schedule of support races this time, track evolution and grip should be further enhanced.” Moving on to helmet cams.  We first saw them introduced at Spa, with stunning footage coming from Fernando Alonso’s point of view as he sped around the iconic circuit.  The helmet cams were then in action again at Monza, as we rode on board with George Russell.  However, the new tech has caused data concerns at Williams… Head of vehicle performance, Dave Robson, telling GP Fans “It’s not ideal really I suppose from our point of view.” “But then again, if people find it interesting and entertaining then that’s all part of the sport, isn’t it. “It’s probably not where I would choose to put the camera for us but if people like that view, it’s okay I think.” Speaking of changes in F1, while the sprint race format has spiced things up in 2021, the spectre of reverse grid races still looms.  However, former World Champion Alain Prost feels if reverse grid races are introduced it would be time for him to walk away from the sport.  Prost said "Formula 1 has to keep a certain level of tradition in terms of technology. "However, you have to understand that the best team should win because it is the best.  “That is the spirit and purpose of Formula 1.  “The reversed grid I hate. "If they introduce the reverse grid in Formula 1, I think I will leave the sport.  “That's the worst thing you can do for the principle of Formula 1.  “I would rather have the dominance of one team because it has done the best job than reverse grid.  “I am open minded, but also traditional minded." And finally, as the title fight between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton reaches fever-pitch, F1 journalist Mark Hughes feels Verstappen is pushing the battle into territory not covered in the rule book.  In his column for The Race, Huges said "It’s a very raw, intense competition and Verstappen’s unambiguous binary approach in close combat – perhaps best summarised as ‘yield or we crash’ – and Hamilton’s refusal to always yield, is pushing them into dangerous territory which the rulebook doesn’t adequately cover. "Ever since F1 car braking zones became blink-brief decades ago, and in the subsequent massively increased safety of cars and tracks, the dividing line between a legitimate challenge and a more bullying ‘yield or crash’ move has become paper-thin. "But Hamilton treads that line rather than crosses over it.  “Verstappen simply stakes his claim with no ambiguity, taking full advantage of there being no specific rule which says you are not allowed to place the decision on the other driver about whether there will be contact or not.  “So it then falls upon the ‘other driver’ –  Hamilton usually – to decide if they will avoid him or not.  “Usually they do, but not always. "It’s not a new thing, this niggle between Verstappen and Hamilton on this very point.  “But it’s the first time it’s counted in the destiny of the title." That concludes this episode of F1 News Today with Tillie.
