Wolves in sheep's clothing will come into the church and not spare the flock. How can we discern between them and good shepherds of the Good Shepherds?
In Acts 20: 28-30, Paul urges the Ephesian elders to watch over the flock to protect against wolves that will come into the church - even from among the elders themselves.
What's more, it can be hard to discern between such a wolf in sheep's clothing and a genuine wounded sheep in the church.
Sharing personal experience and reflecting on Jesus' teaching in John 10:1-21, Brian Croft shares five ways to identify good shepherds of the Good Shepherd.

Jesus the life-giving Shepherd reveals the glory of God as he brings dead people to life.
The raising of Lazarus in John 11: 1-44 is a sign that points to a greater, spiritual reality, made "so that you may believe".
Jesus, the resurrection and the life, reveals the glory of God as his powerful word brings physical resurrection. And we see the glory of God again in every man or woman who believes and endures in faith.

Jesus is the bread of life who nourishes and sustains his people so that they will never hunger or thirst.
Our longings in life and in ministry are often misdirected because we are blinded by our immediate needs over our eternal need. In John 6: 22-59 we read that Jesus came not to give bread but to be bread.
We must feed on the bread of life to be nourished and satisfied, then share the bread of life to others.

We should pray that Jesus, the Light of the World, would shine ever more brightly in our churches and out into the world around us.
Jesus, the Light of the World, is a light that guides, a light that pushes back the power of sin, and a light that transforms people's lives as they move from darkness into light.

What does it mean to come to the Father through Jesus, and how does the Holy Spirit help us live in relationship with him?
We are empowered to be faithful shepherds by the sending of the Holy Spirit to dwell with us and in us.
Therefore, the power of our ministry comes with how we walk with God, how we look to Christ, how we rely on the Spirit to do the work in us and through us.

Abraham rejoiced at the thought of the coming of Jesus, the divine shepherd. We can share the joy of Abraham as we look to Jesus.
Jesus' claim that "before Abraham was born, I am" (John 8: 48-59) draws different responses: from joy to fury.
As we look to Jesus:
We must revel in the glory of Jesus' divinity.
We must resign our self-glorying that blinds us to the glory of Jesus.
We must remain in his word, the way to eternal life.

Jesus, the Good Shepherd, models the pattern for ministry for us as we serve in the church.
Jesus is the true shepherd who alone can lead the sheep. He is the gate that leads to life and salvation. He is the good shepherd who shows his goodness in how he lays down his life for his sheep.
Now, as we seek to shepherd God's sheep in the church, we must see and appreciate Jesus as our model. He calls them, he knows them, he cares for them, he values them, he gives himself up for them.

We know the truth of justification by faith in our heads, but how does it drop to our hearts?
In Galatians 2:11-21, Paul challenges Peter about his behaviour; his concern is that Peter is not "walking in line with the gospel".
The gospel of justification by faith sets the path of life and Peter is deviating from it (in this case by not eating with Gentiles). So, Peter is not denying the gospel with his words but with his life; he’s not a heretic but a hypocrite.
In our Local Conferences this year, we applied that to ourselves asking: how might we deny the truth of justification in our living? Specifically, how might we try to ‘prove ourselves’ through our ministry, when there is nothing to prove?
We examined how this might show itself in everyday areas, for example, how we respond to criticism, how we respond to success and failure, and more.
To help us, we showed an interview with Glynn Harrison thinking about how we might grasp the truth of justification more deeply. We know it in our heads, but how does it drop to our hearts?

The Bible tells us that God loves justice (Psalm 99:4). But is it intrinsic to his very nature? Can we be sure?
In this seminar, Paul Mallard, FIEC Director for the West Midlands and chair of the FIEC Theology Team, and Sarah Allen, a pastor's wife in Huddersfield and member of the FIEC Theology Team, explore the topic of God's justice.
They explain how John Owen changed his mind on the subject and why it has massive theological and pastoral implications for us today.

How should we live and minister in the world as we wait in expectation for the coming return of Christ?
If we want to honour the Lord Jesus and know his welcome when he returns, we need to live out the life he's given us as we fully expect his return.

There is an intensity to Christian ministry that we must hold in tension: the cost and the joy; the privilege and the pain; the blessing and the burden.
Adrian Reynolds (FIEC Head of National Ministries) speaks from Hebrews 12:1-3 on the nobility of Christian ministry and the costs to Christian ministry: two sides that church leaders must hold in tension.

There are reasons for optimism when we look at the growth of the gospel in FIEC and its churches over the past year.
In 2023, we find ourselves in a post-Christian context with a declining institutional church, making Christians in an ever-decreasing minority.
Yet evangelical churches - that faithfully proclaim Christ, provide a warm welcome, and connect with their communities - are growing in a significant way.
In the past year, we've seen how FIEC churches, our help for churches, and our staff team are all growing.

Much of what passes for the pursuit of justice can be tinged with a hint (or more) of cultural superiority. How can we serve people well without becoming paternalistic or colonial?
In this seminar, Inonge Siluka, founder of Restored Hope Zambia, will help us see how actions and words can often be unwise and misunderstood and how we can serve others thoughtfully, wisely and carefully, following in the footsteps of our Master.

What place does the church have in bringing healing to a fractured world when it comes to race?
In this seminar, Jason Roach, Director of Ministries at London City Mission, explores how the church can both lead the way in how it relates to all its members but also speak clearly and winsomely into a debate which is often divisive and sometimes bitter.
The seminar was introduced by Johnny Prime (FIEC Director for Pastoral Support).
