Maddy Anderson is the singer-songwriter from the Peach State of Georgia that you ought to know. Maddy is a modern songstress who was heavily influenced by 90s alternative music. We start the show with her cover of "Hand In My Pocket" by Alanis Morissette and that set the tone for the rest of the show. Maddy even had the Nashville philharmonic perform on one of her songs. This is a fantastic conversation and looking forward to having her on again.
Kelly Lang is a well know name in the music industry. From her appearance on Star Search with Ed McMahon which garnered her critical acclaim, to her collaborations/duets with incredible artists like the late great Olivia Newton-John, to her incredible marraige with country legend T.G. Sheppard, Kelly Lang uses music to bring joy to people. In this conversation, we go through some of her songs and collaboration. We get emotional talking about Olivia Newton-John. We talk about her cancer fight and how it has inspired so many people who are enduring the fight themselves. Kelly is humble yet strong and should be a role model to all of the young women who are making their way through this crazy world. We end on her collaboration with T.G. Sheppard on the great Frank Myers song "Just You and I" made famous by Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle and we also get into their new duet on Shania Twain's "You're Still The One".
Country music legend T.G. Sheppard joined us and we had an amazing conversation going through some of his songs including a deep track in his career as well as his latest duet coming up with his wife Kelly Lang of Shania Twain's "Still The One". We also talked about a duet T.G. and Kelly Lang did that was written by the great Frank Myers (who is also a friend to the show). T.G. shares many great stories including a special one regarding Elvis. During the interview, Dean commented that T.G. Sheppard's voice is like home. Listen to the discussion to find out why.
When the music conversation with a music icon starts with a song they wrote called "Magic Power" in their Triumph days, a song that is all about the power of music to a young person, you know this is going to be a tremendous discussion. Rik Emmett joined Dean Baldwin and The Don to talk about his definitive hits collected called "Diamonds".
Doug Gillard is the legendary guitarist from the iconic band Guided By Voices. Doug joined Dean Baldwin and The Don. Among conversation pieces were the day Mayor Bloomberg declared it Guided By Voice Day in NYC in 2004. We also get into a deep discussion about working with Ric Ocasek (The Cars) fame and how Ric was as a producer on their 1999 album "Do The Collapse"
PJ Farley of the legendary band formed in New Jersey named TRIXTER joined us to talk about the legacy of the band and his solo work. We talk about the lost year 2020. We also talk about the U68 channel that most of us from New Jersey watched as an alternative to MTV late at night. We also talk about the band Mr. Big.
Brian Wheat is a founding member and the long term bassist of the band Tesla. Brian joined us to talk about the upcoming Las Vegas residency in April 2024 at the House Of Blues inside Mandalay Bay. We talk about Phil Collen of Def Leppard being a producer on the "Shock" album. We talk about the challenges of touring for most bands but Tesla has a unique approach to touring. Brian also shares a special Paul McCartney story.
Trev Lukather and Nic Collins are the sons of iconic musicians. They do not lean on this when they are making their own music. This is the case with their band The Effect. The band is balanced out by Steve Maggiora on keys (tours with Toto) and Emmett Stang whose vocal range knows no bounds. We talk about how Trev and Nic met. We talk about how much their dad's had to do with them learning their instruments. We talk about how fluid Nic is on the drums. One of Nic's biggest influences is Danny Carey of Tool fame and we discuss this. We point out how Trev smiles so much when he plays guitar. Trev says that there are actually haters because he smiles so much. We also dig into their two new songs "Something Wrong" and "Unwanted".
Tony Cardenas-Montana is a Grammy nominated (Great White), certified multi-platinum Billboard charting writer and musician. We even played a clip from the Great White video "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" which features Tony throughout the video. Tony joined us and dove deep into several songs from his band Shadow and The Thrill. We also feature and talk about his cover of the song "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley and we hope Cee Lo Green catches wind of this version.
Rudy Sarzo is the iconic bassist in Quet Riot who also played formidable years with Ozzy and Whitesnake. Rudy joined us for another visit and we dug into the scene of the Sunset Strip when the influx of New Wave and Punk invaded Metal territory. We discuss the impact of Eddie Van Halen and the impact Quiet Riot/Randy Rhodes had on the Strip in more details. We talked about the fashion of the time. We also talked about Rudy's time in The Guess Who and how the members of that band revere Rudy. We also get into AI as a tool or a demise to music.
One month before her marriage would come to an end, she wrote the music and penned the lyrics to a song now called "While We're Still Friends". Countless people have been in this situation and this song will be completely relatable to those who have been through this. Even ones that have not in a marriage, sometimes friends can come to an end but the friendship should end on good terms. Allie gets deep and personal about this song which also features country superstar Lee Brice. Ashlynn joined us and we took a deep dive into three of the songs on this new record. The first track "Avalanche" starts with spoken word, as if it is getting played on an answering machine. Ashlynn's lyrical ability is truly refreshing and we are here to tell you that she is a REAL player on the music stage. The second track "Cool Girl" blew us all away! The album "Malia" should be up for ALBUM OF THE YEAR in 2024. it is that solid of a record. Graham also talks about technology when they were recording their hit songs (For example: the two inch tape machines) versus technology today. Grizz brings up the perception that for years men were not allowed to like Air Supply because that would not make them masculine enough. Graham shares humorous stories about this. We close the show with the wonderful vocal dynamics that Graham and Russell bring to each other in songs and Graham talks about "Lost In Love" as an example.
We started the show with Makenzie playing her cover of Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance". The rest of the interview showcases Makenzie's incredible voice and her songwriting prowess. Take a listen!
Christine (Lead Vocals), Colin (Guitars), Sean (Keys) make up the core elements of Southpaw. This New Jersey based band cannot be pigeon-holed into one genre.
