(Alexa, What is a "riddim? ... and say it loud for the 'yutes' in the back!") Riddim: the Jamaican Patois pronunciation of the English word "rhythm". In reggae, dancehall, calypso, soca, and reggaeton parlance it refers to the instrumental accompaniment to a song. These genres consist of the riddim plus the "voicing" (vocal part) sung by the deejay. Mi Patois nuh too gud and mi not sing too well.. so, skip that part of the deejay singing.. ("Deejay" also meaning Artist/Singer in Patois) but this episode is for one of mi FAVORITE dancehall riddims: Diwali Riddim It's a particular riddim that flourishes w/memories for myself and many others who remember this certain sound and all the music that has been influenced by this riddim, as well.. Freestyle, the subgenre of dance music that emerged in the early 1980's only to reach its peak popularity toward the end of the eccentric decade, it isn't a particularly easy sound to define. It's a plethora of styles; a dash of disco, a dose of electro, a dab of hip hop and a spoonful of Latin American influences intently wrapped up into one record!

To commence the series was this collection of tunes that I was able to grasp (while I not able to mix, but that's another story) and was now able to orchestrate them into a mix that sets up for the eccentric Bittersweet Harmony series.
