NOW it all makes sense - and it’s backed by science! ONE little hormone, or the lack of it has changed you. And that my friend - is it. Your lack of sleep, your lack- or seeming lack - of empathy, potential heart trouble - and that general feeling that everyone else can suck a lemon - because you're going to do what you want now. All explained. According to the Harvard article, What is oxytocin? "Oxytocin is a hormone that's produced in the hypothalamus and released into the bloodstream by the pituitary gland. Its main function is to facilitate childbirth, which is one of the reasons it is called the "love drug" or "love hormone." Oxytocin, like endorphins or serotonin, is a type of hormone in your body that promotes positive feelings.” And according to the Journal of Endocrinology, “Oxytocin is a neurohormone that regulates emotionality, social behaviors, and fundamental physiological systems. Localization of oxytocin receptors in the brain, reproductive tissues, bone, and heart support their role in mental health and potentially sleep, along with reproductive and cardiovascular functions.” Scientific references discussed: https://joe.bioscientifica.com/view/journals/joe/262/1/JOE-23-0396.xml https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/oxytocin-the-love-hormone Thank you for joining me today! Welcome to our marathon of 50 Over 50 Podcaster award winners! Today's episode is one of 19 story hosted by Cheryl Holling The guest, Christy Harst,(that originally aired in May of 2024), has been heard on the World Series, Monday Night Football, and the NBA Finals as one of the national voices of YouTubeTV. She’s also the national voice of John Deere, and has voiced dozens of television, streaming, and radio ads. Her career in voiceover began in college when she applied for a news internship at a local classical radio station. It was during her interview that the station manager told her she had a good voice, escorted her to the studio, recorded her reading the Star Spangled Banner and then suggested, “You’d do well in voice overs.” Two decades later, Christy is in fact “doing well” and continues to work from her home based professional studio. She loves and excels at what she does and it shows in her body of work. Plus, she’s the only one I know that has ever voiced about the dangers of Bed Bug Mating! Christy grew up in a rural town an hour outside of Cleveland, competed in cooking and public speaking as part of the 4-H program. After graduating college Christy experienced several terrifying situations, including being robbed in her first post-graduate job. And five years ago she suffered a mild stroke. Christy, by any measure, has been successful in the world of VO, and yet she is on a mission to change the sound of a genre of voiceover that for too long has been dominated by men in the world of sports promos. Her Building Doors campaign seeks to literally change the narrative of sports promos by demanding equal opportunities for female voice actors not just in sports, but in male centric brands as well. Her goal is that the door will be built and always remain open. She’s even curated a personal YouTube appeal to her beloved Cleveland Browns to be their secret weapon by being their “first female voice to break through the noise!” To give feedback or a story idea: 19stories@soundsatchelstudios.com To listen to Cheryl's demos or other podcast episodes: https://www.cherylholling.com/ Follow me on Instagram: @cherylhollingvo Thank you for joining us today! Welcome fabulous! Do you struggle with gratitude? What about gratitude for tough things today's guest is the perfect example of being perfectly imperfect on his quest for gratitude. He's incredibly open and honest about his journey. Let’s Talk Tough Stuff—And Grace Michael Herst’s background? It’s the stuff of movies. Retired police sergeant, injured in the line of duty, forced to reinvent himself after a career was yanked away. IHere’s the twist though: the journey became about finding a new purpose beyond the badge. “It allowed me to redirect my purpose in life,” he shares. And as casual as that sounds, the weight behind those words is real. Support Systems Aren’t Just Fluffy Self-Help Talk Michael doesn’t go solo on this journey. We’re talking family, friends, colleagues—an entire community intent on not letting him spiral. “They give you a positive atmosphere, which makes it easy to start working your way out of that,” he says. Yogi points out something so true: finding those people, those honest-to-goodness support systems, is transformative but so many struggle to reach out. And Michael nails it: in the digital age, we’re more “connected” but less truly close. Texting “I love you” isn’t the same as actually saying it, feeling it, living it. Cooking Up Memories—And Healing The also talk Italian feasts and the power of the dinner table. Michael’s fondest memories are simple: everyone around the table, food from every region, stories flying, laughter echoing. “It’s a chance for conversation and it’s a chance to relive those memories, which I think are important because it keeps the generations alive.” Cooking isn’t just about the food—it’s about connection, building bridges between past and present, healing by keeping family stories alive. Generational Trauma Is Real—But Doesn’t Have to Be Forever Michael goes all in, opening up about his own childhood with alcoholic parents and deep family dysfunction. The kicker? He made a vow to himself: he’d break that cycle. Forgiveness didn’t come easy, but understanding did as he dug into his family history during recovery. The huge takeaway? Healing yourself often means forgiving your past—and doing better for those who come after. Thank you for joining us today! What Susan Shapiro Taught Me About Forgiveness – Reflections from the Podcast Marathon If you’ve been listening along during our podcast marathon, you know how much I adore sharing episodes from our 50 Over 50 Podcaster Award winners. What a delight it’s been—especially today, as I got to highlight the wisdom of my friend (and all-around powerhouse), Maria Leonard Olson. Let me set the scene: Maria’s podcast, “Becoming Your Best Version,” shone in today’s episode. But what made it especially fascinating was the presence of Susan Shapiro, a specialist in forgiveness whose perspective genuinely caught me off guard. For me, “forgive and forget” has always been a sort of background music—something we’re taught from day one as little girls, almost like it’s non-negotiable. I thought I’d already exhausted this topic after decades of living and learning, but wow, was I in for a revelation. Not All Forgiveness is Created Equal Susan’s view is refreshingly real. She points out that forgiveness, especially the “radical” kind the self-help world is so fond of pushing, isn’t always the healthiest route. Sometimes we thrive precisely because we don’t let things go, using that fire to drive us forward. Can you imagine that? She actually shared stories of people who chose not to forgive—and found healing and strength in honoring their boundaries rather than endlessly turning the other cheek. Artificial intelligence has come a long way over just the past few years. It can hold conversations and manage social media, it can create art and edit videos, and it can even write blogs (though not this one). Every aspect of our lives has been touched by AI in one way or another, and that’s particularly true for sound. While many podcasters, including some of my guests, now use AI tools for research and sound editing, it’s also front and center in sound, from cloning voices to writing its own songs. Royalty-free music is already starting to give way to copyright-free AI music, and a variety of powerful audio content generation tools are scheduled for release later this year. But can computers replace human composers? Will listeners be able to tell the difference? And how did we get from vinyl records to virtual music? Where did this start, how is it going, and where will it progress into the future? For the full show notes including video examples of what's discussed, visit: https://voiceoversandvocals.com/blog/research-technology/uncanny-audio-is-ai-generated-content-music-to-our-ears/ And you'll find the Audio Branding Podcast at https://audiobrandingpodcast.cous Thank you for joining me today! There’s something magical about celebrating passionate, powerful, and wise people over 50. That’s why I founded the 50 Over 50 Podcaster Awards—to shine a spotlight on the phenomenal creators redefining what it means to be vibrant and influential in the second half of life. As the host of “Fabulous Over 50,” I’m constantly inspired by the stories my peers are sharing with the world. So, to honor this year’s outstanding winners, I’ve invited each one to showcase their favorite podcast episode right here on the show. Today, I’m beyond excited to introduce you to one of our award winners—Claudia Noriega Bernstein, the extraordinary host of the award-winning podcast, “Don’t Shrink to Fit.” Why This Episode Matters When I saw she had chosen her solo episode about growing up with a narcissistic parent, I felt a rush of anticipation. I knew her story and insights would resonate with so many listeners—myself included. “Mother’s Day just passed,” Claudia shares in her episode, “and while it’s a beautiful time to celebrate, it’s also a complicated, even triggering, time for those of us who didn’t get the nurturing we truly needed.” That single sentence had me hooked—and I know it will move you too. It takes courage to open up about the deep, lingering wounds that come from having a parent unable to give true empathy or unconditional love. Claudia’s vulnerability, honesty, and wisdom shine as she talks about the real-life impact of narcissistic parenting: the self-doubt, the endless “people pleasing,” and the yearning to feel truly seen and heard. Her message is profoundly healing—especially for those of us who have had to do the hard work of reparenting ourselves later in life. Thank you for joining me today! I'm having a blast creating Fabulous Over 50 & it would be an honor to have you share it with someone who would enjoy it. Thank you! Want more?
