Failure to launch

This is a podcast about ideas that made it to the launch pad but imploded before they left the ground. Lessons we learned, things we realized about ourselves, and reasons we don't follow through on our dreams.

I need your help - should we keep doing this podcast?

So, I haven't posted a podcast in almost two weeks. I'm losing interest. Maybe that means you are too. I'm not sure. Starting and leaving something to wither in the sun is a bad habit I have. Today I make some confessions about that, provide an update on my friend's podcast, and ask for your opinion.  Let me know if we should keep this thing going. If we do, let's figure out a format that works for you and works for me.  Connect with me on socials!! Time - who can master it

Goals are great but without a timetable for completion, they are nothing more than dreams. The last part of the SMART goals acronym is Time-bound. This is an essential part of measuring your goals, knowing if they are realistic and if they are attainable. Failure to establish a timetable can allow projects to run on endlessly. Time-bound goals will also help you cut out the non-essentials. There are often some items needed to launch while others can be attended to later. Defining the differences is key to moving forward. Time-bound goals will also help you identify problems in your process. If you consistently miss deadlines, there is a problem that has to be addressed. These can be hard conversations but are so important for the growth of yourself and your team.  Connect with me on socials!! Realistic - don't kid yourself

Aim high but be real about what you can accomplish. This can be a very difficult conversation, but knowing your limitations is the key to finding success. Often people don't want to admit where they fall short. They see this are a threat to their self-worth instead of an opportunity to improve. Being realistic about your goals also ensures you aren't investing time in the wrong area. If you have prerequisites, you'll need to address those first. If you were to skip those intermediate steps, you could end up wasting time which can be a huge setback. It's also important you have a good team around you to be honest about your abilities and workload.  Connect with me on socials!! Attainable - let's be real about our goals

You have to do more than believe to achieve. You have to ensure that what you are attempting to do is possible. Now, there are times where you truly attempt to innovate. This can often seem impossible. It's important to be able to distinguish between the two. The different aspects of SMART goals often overlap and you have to each one into account when discussing if something is attainable. Sometimes you may need to adjust smaller short-term goals to achieve the larger one. The main thing is to avoid pie in the sky goals without taking inventory of what it will take to get there.  Connect with me on socials!! Our greatest fear - a poem of hope

Don't be afraid to let your light shine. I first heard this poem quoted in the movie Coach Carter. It was an underlying theme in the movie and a powerful scene. The poem was only quoted in part and I later looked up the entire thing. I've often found it so encouraging. On this particular morning, I was sharing with one of my daughters the power she has as a leader with her peers. This poem was the perfect encouragement for this point. I hope you are encouraged as much as I am by it.  Connect with me on socials!! Twitter: https://twitter.com/Workshop_Joe Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/workshop_joe/ Website: coming soon?

Measurable goals - if you can't measure its not happening

Do a tree falling in the woods make a sound of no one is around to hear it? I always hated this because you can't prove one way or the other. The crux of the question is can the sound be measured and if it can't does it exist? That's what is essential to a SMART goal. You have to be able to measure you progress. If you can't, how do you know you are getting closer? Connect with me on socials!! Twitter: https://twitter.com/Workshop_Joe Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/workshop_joe/ Website: coming soon?

Specific - you can't hit a target if you don't know what it is

Letter "S" of smart goals is the word specific. You have to clearly identify what your target is. High level is good for brainstorming but if you want to actually achieve something, you have to define what it is first.  Connect with me on socials!! Talents - how many of us have them

How do you find your talents? Do some people just get lucky and find something they love or did they go and search for them? I think it's important to always be learning and trying new things. This week, go out and try something new. Connect with me on socials!! Twitter: https://twitter.com/Workshop_Joe Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/workshop_joe/ Website: coming soon?

You are special - just in case no one has ever told you before

My friend shared with me what an American idea success is. She had worked with young ladies in Eastern Europe and many of them had no concept of self-worth. No one had told them they were valuable or that they could accomplish anything worthwhile. She was often the first person to ever express that they were valuable and special. This is the lie that we are so often sold. I want to tell you that you are special and you were made with purpose. You have the ability to serve, create, and love as image-bearers of God. Hold onto this truth.  Connect with me on socials!! Twitter: https://twitter.com/Workshop_Joe Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/workshop_joe/ Website: coming soon?

Rest is not given enough attention. In today's works we to often glorify the rat race. Make sure to rest, relax, and work on your hobbies. Connect with me on socials!! Twitter: https://twitter.com/Workshop_Joe Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/workshop_joe/ Website: coming soon?

What if....

Today I wanted to share the poem If by Rudyard Kipling with you. I love this poem and read it often to remind me that uncertainty should not be feared. Our response determines the outcome. I hope this poem encourages you as well. Connect with me on socials!! Twitter: https://twitter.com/Workshop_Joe Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/workshop_joe/ Website: coming soon?

What is success - what are you aiming for?

I want to continue discussing success today. I was really spending some time thinking about our aim or purpose. So often we only look at the finish line but don't include the work it took to get there as part of our success. We've got to change this mindset. We have to define our progress as small wins on our way to the "big show". I share an example from my wife to illustrate this point. I also have an update on my friend's podcast. Hope you enjoy! What is success - we need to look at it differently

Failure can be defined as the lack of success, but what is success? How you define success has huge implications. I want to take a step back and recommend you look at success differently. We'll have to spend more time on this topic but I want to get your wheels turning today.  We also have a sponsor today! The fear of failure - an introduction

Before we dig deeper on failure and success, I want to discuss the fear of failure. I think that is the true reason we don't move forward with an idea. How that fear looks likely varies from person to person, but I believe it's this fear that often holds us back. Today we began to touch on this idea and I provide two examples of people who found success despite failure. Connect with me on socials!! Why are we doing this?

Why am I doing this podcast? Let me tell you why. There is a very specific reason and it's because I'm trying to help my friend. Sometimes you need a little nudge and that's what this is.  We are also going to talk about what holds us back. Today, I briefly go over the definition of failure. We'll dig into this deeper tomorrow.
