Sean turned to alcohol at a young age to numb pain and escape trauma, beginning a 30+ year cycle of addiction. By 15, he was involved in gang life on Chicago’s South Side, searching for acceptance he couldn’t find at home. He witnessed friends murdered, lost his brother to suicide, spent nearly 10 years incarcerated, and lost two marriages and his children to addiction. On September 6, 2019, Sean got sober and his life began to change. Today, his focus is God, recovery, and giving back. He’s pursuing the dream his mother always had for him—to become a preacher or drug and alcohol counselor—and using his story to show that redemption is possible, no matter how far someone has fallen. https://www.thechristiancenter.org/
Jesse Courtney grew up in rural Madison County, where alcohol was a daily presence despite an otherwise good childhood. By age 12, he was smoking weed, drinking by 14, and living on his own by 16—already caught in a cycle of daily alcohol abuse. The next decade was marked by addiction, playing music in bars, repeated jail time, and escalating substance use that included pills and meth. Jesse’s life spiraled into suicidal behavior and homelessness, leaving him broken and desperate. Everything changed after a powerful encounter with God, which became the turning point in his recovery journey. Today, Jesse shares his story to bring hope, healing, and faith to those struggling with addiction and despair.
In this raw and deeply personal episode, Dan Watson, a father of three, shares his experience with addiction and recovery. Dan lost his oldest son to a fatal drug overdose and has lived through years of heartbreak as his daughter battled addiction. He knows the hurt, the anger, the helplessness, and the lasting pain that addiction leaves behind for families. This conversation pulls back the curtain on the parental grief of overdose loss, the emotional toll of loving a child through addiction, and the complicated reality of hope when the outcome is uncertain. Dan speaks honestly about what it means to survive the unthinkable—and keep going anyway. This episode is for parents, families, and anyone impacted by addiction, incarceration, overdose, and recovery. It’s real. It’s heavy. And it matters.
