WE'RE BACK, BABY!

After an extended break brought to you by #2020 - we're back, baby!Watching footy this year has felt a little bit like sitting in an empty stand at the MCG singing Dave Dobbyn to yourself, but there have been some surprisingly enjoyable parts to the season. In this special episode we talk about things we missed and loved during the 2020 season. Brodie and Amy also drop a huge surprise on Sarah that seals the fate of her future daughter. Thanks to Friend Of The Pod Gemma who helped us concoct the perfect footy origin story.Audio note: The audio quality on this episode isn't as clear as usual as it was recorded using the magic of the internet, rather than in a radio studio. Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.Follow us on socials:Twitter @fangrrrlspodInstagram @fangrrrlspodFacebook @ fangrrrlsOr get in touch:Email fangrrrlspodcast@gmail.com

The calm behind the whistle

On this week's episode, AFL field umpire Eleni Glouftsis tells us about her zen approach to handling the heckles as she does her job – the aim of which is to be "unobtrusive and un-spoken about".Eleni made history in round 9, 2017 when she became the AFL's first female field umpire during a home and away season. She gives insight on that game and Brendan Goddard's words of comfort for her, talks us through the way umpires handle rule changes, shares her favourite footy moments (hint: it's the same as ours), and clues us in on on learning players' names. (If in doubt, call them Jack.)ICYMI, here's the moment Eleni's partner, boundary umpire Dillon Tee, popped the question at the 'G after the Round 19 clash between Adelaide and Carlton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGooudyOvuUOur artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.Follow us on socials:Twitter @fangrrrlspodInstagram @fangrrrlspodFacebook @ fangrrrlsOr get in touch:Email fangrrrlspodcast@gmail.com

THE ONE WITH RICHO

Matthew Richardson is an integral part of Sarah, Amy and Brodie's separate and combined footy origin stories, so you can imagine our delight (and very chill and normal reactions) when we heard he was keen to stop by Fan Grrrls for a chat.We did it, we hooked our white whale. And we got to ask him about 2017, we found out what he's got on his Discman and heard the horrifying story of a true footy curse. And, of course, we asked him the very special question we ask all our guests. It's Richo, bitches. Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.See special, behind the scenes content from Richo's visit by following us on socials:Twitter @fangrrrlspodInstagram @fangrrrlspodFacebook @ fangrrrlsOr get in touch:Email fangrrrlspodcast@gmail.com

Punk shows and the footy: the two places it's okay to spit in public.

Jack and Seamus O'Connel from the Melbourne band Picket Palace dropped by to chat to Brodie and Sarah about their surprise viral song named for and dedicated to Essendon's own Anthony McDonald Tipungwuti. Watch it here. These two diehard Bluebaggers chat about the lifetime of what they've only known as "Carlton humility", what it's like for them to be back at Princes Park for Carlton AFLW games, the saddest AFL record Jack's realised Kade Simpson might soon break, and Seamus's incredible promise to his former schoolmate Jack Silvagni. We also get to discuss some of our favourite topics, including the marriage of footy and music that abounds in Melbourne, and Richo, who the guys have written a song about! Hear it this weekend in Melbourne when they launch their Tippa single at the Curtin on Saturday July 13 (the Friday show is already sold out!) and play from their upcoming album, The Footy Record. Sport's never going to hurt you: Stephanie Convery talks concussion in athletes

It's a topic that's been on the minds of fans and officials in footy – and sports more widely – for decades, but only in recent years has become front-page news. Joining Sarah, Amy and Brodie to discuss concussion complexities is Stephanie Convery, who as well as being Deputy Culture Editor at the Guardian Australia, is the author of the forthcoming book, Who Killed Davey Browne? Following the inquest into the avoidable death of 29-year-old Australian professional boxer Davey Browne, Steph's book will be published by Penguin Random House in March 2020. Our chat covers footy (obvi) and why boxers – like Steph herself – keep chasing the adrenalin of the sport, despite the risks. We also ask what is concussion, how does it manifest, how do we identify it, and what are the long-term repercussions of head injuries, like concussion?Read the pieces discussed in this episode, and related to our chat:Stephanie's story on Davey from 2017The case of 17-year-old Canadian rugby player Rowan Stringer, and the law that her concussion-related death influencedWendy Carlisle on the AFL's concussion problemSt Kilda's Paddy McCartin opens up about the affects of multiple concussionsAnnie Nolan writes about her children's responses to their dad, Liam Picken's, on-field concussionsFOTD (Friend of the Pod) Konrad Marshall on the concussion class actionOur artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.Get in touch with us:Twitter @fangrrrlspodInstagram @fangrrrlspodFacebook @ fangrrrlsEmail fangrrrlspodcast@gmail.com

Is this anti-social enough? A conversation about being in footy crowds.

It's been a while between drinks for the Fan Grrrls, and today Sarah, Amy and Brodie are back with a chat about how we're feeling about this weird footy season for the tiges. We also talk through what the current conversations about footy crowd behaviour conjure up in us and how it feels lacking, what we agree to by being in these spaces, and how the behaviours of individuals and crowds differ (and compare).NB this conversation was recorded before AFL CEO Gil MacLachlan's press conference. The article we discuss is 'AFL barracking: Was I guilty of antisocial behaviour?' by Melinda Houston in The Age. Yolŋu Family Biscuit: discussing Dreamtime with Baker Boy and Leila Gurruwiwi

What a dream. Ahead of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round this weekend, Brodie, Sarah and Amy are joined on the podcast by two incredible guests – who happen to share a close family connection – Danzal Baker aka Baker Boy and his aunty, Leila Gurruwiwi, a long-serving panellist on the Marngrook Footy Show.Hear Baker Boy talk about what it means to perform his song 'Black Magic' at Dreamtime at the 'G and his lifelong long of Essendon. Then, Leila shares stories from her bone-deep connection to the Western Bulldogs and discusses the lingering pain of dealing with the treatment of Adam Goodes as a member of the footy media and an Aboriginal woman. Leila also shares an insight into the incredible spark that made her believe she could be and do anything – something we're all very grateful she learned early on.If you enjoyed this episode, we'd love it if you left a review! Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.Get in touch with us:Twitter @fangrrrlspodInstagram @fangrrrlspodFacebook @ fangrrrlsEmail fangrrrlspodcast@gmail.com

A FEW GOOD MEN: A CHAT WITH TITUS O'REILY

Sports satirist Titus O'Reily joins us this week to talk about the grim reality of letting a bunch of 20-year-olds determine if we're happy or sad. Just fun footy things!Titus tells us how he became both a footy fan and also one of our favourite satirical commentators. Together we dig into the darkness of the ‘good bloke’ and the culture that builds them up, backs them when they mess up, and condemns the rest of us for expecting more from them. We commiserate about how the S*m N*wmans of the world try to define what footy is for the rest of us, and the way footy media has tried or failed to keep up with changes in comedy and culture over the years. If you enjoyed this episode, we'd love it if you left a review!
