In the final of three parts, Fashion: No Filter passes the mic to our guest editor Henrietta Gallina as we explore the role of mainstream media in the current climate. In light of the rallying cry for the fashion industry to put an end to ongoing systemic racism, Henrietta, Camille and Monica have been having some tough and candid conversations about the state of play and how they want to participate and show up in this moment. Their conclusion: Fashion: No Filter would share its platform in order to create meaningful dialogue and help foster understanding, learning and shared experiences in the most authentic way. In today’s conversation, Henrietta speaks to trailblazing fashion critic Robin Givhan who is a journalist at The Washington Post. Her work won her the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2006 which is incidentally the first time the award was given to a fashion writer. The Pulitzer Committee cited Robin’s “witty, closely observed essays that transform fashion criticism into cultural criticism”. Henrietta and Robin begin with a birdseye view on the state of the industry today and move on to cover a range of topics. Robin explains why she claims in a recent piece that the fashion system was broken long before the pandemic hit and why it needs a reboot. They also discuss the racial fallout, performative marketing and smoke and mirror optics of advertising and inclusivity, cancel culture vs accountability and the importance of equity and equal representation. In this episode of Fashion: No Filter, Monica and Camille sit down with French fashion documentarian Loic Prigent, who is known for his innovative insider documentaries, narrated in his famous humouristic tone which dissect the fashion world of today. Prigent's films feature fashion icons Jacquemus, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier, Tom Ford, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, Sonia Rykiel and Chanel -- there are lots more, but that makes for a very long sentence.It seems Prigent was always intended for the unique cross-section where fashion and broadcast journalism collide: his breadth knowledge of the industry and its history is profound, his witticisms are endlessly observant. Over the past decade Pernille Teisbaek’s name has become synonymous with a specific kind of pared-back, sophisticated Scandinavian chic. But the elusive “Look de Pernille” (as her successful blog founded in 2012 was titled) is not limited to local fame — Pernille’s style has inspired an army of international fans — and copycats. Since it’s always fashion week somewhere, the time has come to talk about the fashion show. If you’ve ever wondered how these unusual events come to life, this episode is for you. Perhaps you’ve stopped in your tracks (or feed scroll) at evidence of a particularly spectacular show or uniquely intricate set. At times these performance aspects can become even more memorable than the fashion itself. Well, chances are a man named Alexandre de Betak with a headphone backstage was calling the shots. De Betak's job is to travel the world year-round dreaming up the most extrordinary sets and parties, catwalks and choreographies.In fact, over the past 25 years, the “Fellini of Fashion” has orchestrated over 1,500 fashion sows from the helm of his international production company Bureau Betak. Not only does the producer come up with each universe to compliment his clients’ collections, he is also known for gaining access to some of the world’s most celebrated and protected landmarks in which to do so. This past summer there was the spectacular pink-carpeted Jacquemus show somewhere in a lavender filed in Provence (that could only be found by following an exact GPS location). Or a show by the same designer at Paris' Picasso Museum a few seasons back, an unprecedented feat that no doubt required a certain amount of arm-twisting among the Paris establishment. As Vestiaire Collective celebrates its 10th anniversary, bolstered by news that the resell industry is now growing 1.5 times faster than the fast-fashion industry, Monica and Camille sit down with the founders of the luxury second-hand website to unpack the workings of the booming circular economy.
