Review: Margaret Qualley Sizzles In Ethan Coen's Moody, Unabashedly Queer Noir(~38:00) Geraldine Viswanathan interview(~52:34) Listener emailYiFeng from Boston wrote in, offering some more information about the conversation Bill and I had about physical media last week:1. The biggest jump in quality on disc vs streaming is audio! Currently, ALL streaming platforms are lossy. An average 2hr film is around 500 megabytes lossy for streaming (equivalent to crappy mp3s) vs 5 GIGAbytes lossless (basically identical to studio masters, with no loss at all). So if Wes has full range speakers, you can tell movie soundtracks on Blu-rays have 10x more information than any streaming platforms.2. As for video quality, bitrate-wise the most famous example is the Game of Thrones episode, “The Long Night,” which was a pixelated dark mess on HBO Max, but on 4k disc using a properly calibrated Dolby Vision display, you won’t see pixelization nor macroblocking but pristine high quality hdr image. The biggest selling feature of 4k is hdr!3. At the time of this email, Gemini Man (and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk) are the only two titles on 4k disc encoded with 60fps dolby vision. Every other 4k disc is 24fps. Currently, 4k discs do not allow for higher than 60fps but can potentially be updated to be variable or 120fps, but as of today, it tops out at 60fps.All the other stuff you need to know:You can find more about some of the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked in the show notes. You can subscribe to /Film Weekly on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Send your feedback, questions, comments, concerns, and mailbag topics to us at bpearson@slashfilm.com. On the August 20, 2025 episode of /Film Weekly, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by several people to talk about the latest film and TV news.(~00:33) In The News:Severance Season 3 Is Undergoing A Big BTS Shakeup Thanks To Ben StillerHundreds Of Classic Looney Tunes Have A New Streaming Home (For Now)HBO Max Has Made Itself A Streaming Destination For Anime FansA New World War Z Movie Might Finally Happen - And It Shouldn't Be A Sequelhttps://deadline.com/2025/08/zack-snyder-last-photograph-stuart-martin-fra-fee-1236492175/https://deadline.com/2025/08/guy-pearce-jack-odonnell-danny-boyle-rupert-murdoch-movie-1236490882/https://deadline.com/2025/08/duffer-brothers-paramount-deal-1236492061/https://deadline.com/2025/08/jason-momoa-david-leitch-pirate-amazon-mgm-studios-1236492399/(~14:01) Nobody 2 spoiler-free conversationNobody 2 Review: Bob Odenkirk Is Invincible In A Violent, Fun Sequel That Wastes No Time(~23:10) Listener emails:Lorenzo wrote in responding to our conversation about James Gunn’s Superman. “Lex’s employee with the mustache is a character named Sydney Happersen.  He was introduced during John Byrne’s post-Crisis Superman run, and he worked with Lex there in the comics too.  Coincidentally, he was introduced in the same comic book issue as Amanda McCoy, who is another associate of Lex’s who also recently made her live-action debut (during the final season of Superman & Lois).James Gunn has lamented having locked himself into using Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after setting him up in a credits scene in Vol. 2 and is therefore trying to move away from using credits scenes to set the stage for future projects. This, I think, explains why he opted to introduce Supergirl prior to the credits rolling on Superman. As for the way in which Supergirl is depicted in her cameo, her upcoming film is based on Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow series, which begins with Supergirl getting drunk on a planet with a red sun as alluded to in her cameo. With regards to Lobo’s role in the Supergirl movie, I don’t think we can really say with much certainty that Kara and Lobo will be “teaming up”. Lobo was not in the Woman of Tomorrow comics. While King initially planned to use Lobo in that run, Lobo didn’t wind up making it in when all was said and done. However, based on those comics I think it’s pretty easy to surmise how Lobo might be incorporated into the film adaptation, and it’s not as an ally to Kara. I think that Lobo will sort of be competing with Supergirl to get to Krem (the big bad of the comic and the movie) first to collect a bounty on him. Lobo is an antihero, so perhaps by the end of the film he will wind up on Supergirl’s side, but I think he will mostly be an antagonist in the movie.I was shocked to hear you guys weren’t fond of the song choice during the Mr. Terrific fight scene. I think that song is lovely. It feels like it could’ve come right off the 50 First Dates soundtrack.(~26:06) Wes from Dallas Fort-Worth wrote in and said:Just wanted to get some help with selecting physical media. I would like to get back into buying Blu-rays but this time, I plan to be very selective and get only the best quality versions. When shopping for them, I see that it has become a mess as there’s just basic movies on Blu-ray, there’s special feature Blu-rays, and then there’s those like the upcoming Tombstone re-release that is probably the best quality you’ll be able to find it in.So my questions are:1. What do I look for on the box to know that this is actually the very best version of a film and that I’m not just buying a standard copy that was out on Blu-ray.2. Could you do a ranking of the best Blu-rays that have the definitive versions of a movie?3. With bandwidth speeds increasing, do you think streaming from Netflix or iTunes will get to the same quality as these Blu-ray’s?4. Off topic - any chance we’ll ever get to see the 120 fps version of Gemini Man somewhere, especially since many TVs now support this? All the other stuff you need to know:You can find more about some of the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked in the show notes. You can subscribe to /Film Weekly on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Send your feedback, questions, comments, concerns, and mailbag topics to us at bpearson@slashfilm.com. Jeez what can I say.. It's one of my Favorite Podcasts to Listen to... When they leave the Politics at home. I'm not surprised they are asking for more listeners when you alienate half your listeners to leave when you preach your Hatred for someone so badly, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth, BUT I listen because I enjoy movies and the people you are. Hopefully you can keep this podcast professional so it doesn't Die a slow death because you won't reach anyone with Tribalism
