Did you know that Portland has the third largest puppet population in the country? Well, I found out that and much, much more from my next guest. From entertaining friends with his marionettes when he was a kid to entertaining all ages as an adult.
Steve over 10 now owns an incredible puppet museum in this Elwood neighborhood housing over 2,600 puppets. But the journey he took to get there was pretty fantastical.

Season 2, Episode 1 of Finding My Own Weird. This episode started out as a recap of what I have been doing for the several months (spoiler alert...it involves finding my own weird) but the first 2/3 of the video is some fun with my best friend, Mark Risinger, who has seen me through many re-inventions in our 20 year friendship.

I go about town in a giant chicken suit. I try finding work this way and I socialize this way. What in the world could possibly drive me to do this? That might be the fairest question of the day. And to be honest, in answering that question, I could discuss details on any level, from my own personal story to the complicated state of the world. With a unique upbringing and a colorful career in costume performance behind me, I relocated to Portland to study sociology at PSU. As anyone would naturally expect, the intersection of my entertainment background and my sociological viewpoints lead me to my ultimate destiny of becoming a giant chicken. That tracks, right? The “guy in a chicken suit” is a classic comedy cliché. In choosing to embody such a ridiculous visage, I hope to not only bring laughter to people, but perhaps, just perhaps, cause them to pause and consider just how seriously they might be taking themselves. Such messages have the potential to go far, potentially unlocking doors to perspectives never realized, promoting self-love and ultimately the love and acceptance of others. In short: by anyone’s measure (and that’s always relative!), I’m about as weird as a person can get, so if you’re going to accept me, you’d better darn well accept every other person on this earth.

Of all of Portland’s colorful characters, none are as easily recognized as The Unipiper, with his fire-breathing bagpipes, colorful costumes, and unicycle, reports of Unipiper sightings stretch back over a decade. The origin of The Unipiper is shrouded in mystery, but reportedly stems from an incident with local-resident Brian Kidd involving a bite from a radioactive unicycle incurred while playing the bagpipes, granting him the power to make people smile. Ever since, he has roamed the streets of Portland, protecting its citizens from all that is normal and standing up to those that would seek to silence the weird. Internet fame soon followed when eyewitness videos of The Unipiper went viral, winding up on such websites as CNN and the front page of Reddit. Youtube commenter kjun13 calls The Unipiper "the most internet-y thing on the internet." The Unipiper has earned his place as the city’s unofficial ambassador of weird, having represented Portland in a variety of foreign lands from Scotland to Japan. For three years running, The Unipiper has been crowned ‘Best Local Celebrity in Portland’ by the Willamette Week and with recent appearances on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, ‘America’s Got Talent’, and ‘The Gong Show’, The Unipiper has solidified his position as a true Portland icon. When asked about the enduring appeal of The Unipiper, Kidd says, "don’t think too hard about it. If you don’t understand The Unipiper there’s a lot you probably won’t understand about Portland. Keeping Portland Weird isn’t a one-person job, but as they say, with great volume comes great responsibility.”

Professional Mermaid, Water Priestess, & Activist
Una is passionate about social justice and have been a longtime activist and advocate in her community for restorative justice, racial equity, and violence reduction. She strongly believes creativity is the key in cultivating cultures of peace. She also believes imaginative endeavors can help initiate the brave and often uncomfortable conversations needed to help raise awareness on issues that matter. Una integrates restorative values and practices into everything she does.
She is also a water priestess and mermaid oracle. A water priestess is one who is dedicated to serving the element of water, both physically and in archetype. The role of the water priestess is to serve as a living reminder of the sacredness of water and to help cultivate personal and spiritual healing for self and others. This work also includes water justice, stewardship, and preservation. Water is not merely an element; it is a life force and a living heritage of the Earth and all of its inhabitants. As a mermaid oracle Una is deeply in tune with the spiritual lessons and wisdom of the waterfolk, and enjoy getting to share this knowledge with others.

He might be 3'6" but he has very large personality.
My interview today is with entertainer and artist Nik Sin.   He played football and wrestled, but it wasnt until he got noticed by his theater teacher that he found his calling, being on stage. From his first play Titanic, to his straight jacket escape act, he followed wild rabbit holes taking him across the country and thru bizarre and fascinating experiences.

A couture wedding dress maker and an online sewing instructor, you would never know the badass journey Brooks Ann took to get where she is now.
My guest today is my high school friend Brooks Ann Camper
From Sesame Street to Broadway to the WWE, Brooks Ann followed a very serendipitous path to get to where she now. She never knew that not knowing how to iron would lead to a Yale costuming internship that would lead her to making veils for Mama Mia and hats for John Lithgow, Bernadette Peters, and the Undertaker. She followed unexpected paths and met amazing people who were the top of their field, every step of the way. Now she uses the knowledge she gained along the way to teach other.

Seeing his first black drag queen show changed his life forever.
Emcee, Entertainer, Activist and alter ego of Poison Waters, Co-hostess of Darcelle XV Showplace, or guest today is the amazing Kevin Cook.
Too light skinned for the black communities, too dark skinned for the Mexican community, and living in primarily white communities most of his life, Kevin struggled to find his place. From growing up in extreme poverty, to being bullied for his race and effeminate ways, he forged friendships in leadership around him. It wasnt until he started community college where he found a group of charismatic and welcoming gays that he finally found the community he had been searching for. Now he is one of the busiest, most sought after drag queen performers in the Pacific Northwest.
