This episode is one of those that tends to define the series. It perfectly captures everything that I love about Doctor Who while telling an impressive and compelling story—using science fiction to explore the human condition and try and help us see the value that we all have in the world at large.Series 5, Episode 10, Vincent and the DoctorHelping me navigate an emotionally fraught episode is the equally excellent Jenni Fay and Ashley Martin. To support the show, visit my Patreon site at:www.patreon.com/daniellevainYou can also support the show by checking out our merchandise at:https://www.cgbeast.com/first-time-lord-merchSubscribe to First Time Lord using your favorite podcasting software or use the links below:Apple PodcastSpotifyGoogle Podcast

Quite a mind-bending episode this turned out to be. It had me so perplexed that I’m thrilled I had an expert join me that not only knows what they are talking about but requested the episode. Otherwise, I would have come away from this episode with the completely wrong idea.Series 5 - Episode 7 - Amy’s Choice. The expert that set me straight in this week’s podcast is none other than the great Jon Soble.

What an exciting time. New showrunner. New Doctor. New companion. A new season of First Time Lord. For all things that begin, there must also be an end. This week's episode feels like an absolute end. The culmination of a story that started in 2005 and ended in 2010. The conclusion of the Tenth Doctor's storyline and the last episode of Russel T Davis soon to be First Run of Doctor Who. That's a lot of emotional weight for a single hour of television.New Years Special - The End of Time Part 2.Jon Soble returns to finish out this two-parter. But with everything that is happening and this exceptional climatic finish, I needed more than just one Whovian expert, so Ashley Martin joined Jon and me to wrap up the Tenth Doctor's adventures.
And so it came to pass that the 10th doctor’s time would come to an end. So let us celebrate this milestone by getting nerdy about the origin of the Time Lords, the planet of Gallifrey.Christmas Special 2009 - The End of Time Part 1.With so much to process, I lean heavily on the most senior of my Experts, Jon Soble.
The Doctor continues to adventure alone, and this week's adventure takes him to the red planet. He stumbles upon a base, the first to house humans on Mars. The events that transpire take the Doctor down a dark path that I don't like at all.2009 Special: The Waters of Mars.I need a well-grounded, solid expert to help me navigate the emotional toll this episode exerts, and Jamie Kern is more than up to the task.To support the show, visit my Patreon site at:www.patreon.com/daniellevainYou can also support the show by checking out our merchandise at:https://www.cgbeast.com/first-time-lord-merchSubscribe to First Time Lord using your favorite podcasting software or use the links below:Apple PodcastSpotifyGoogle Podcast
It's a special, but it has nothing to do with Christmas episode art that evokes a strong Indiana Jones vibe. In contrast, the episode doesn't push anyone's narrative forward, but what a fun ride it was.2009 Special - Planet of the DeadFor this first special, I'm joined by my original expert, the special in his own right, Eric Sweetman.
I still don’t know what to expect out of the Christmas special. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to them. It’s not always the introduction to a new doctor or a setup for the following Series plot. This unique, though, really captured me. There are lots of tonal references that spoke to me and a story that ties up some loose ends from the end of the Series.Series 4 - Episode 14 - The Next DoctorWith so many references to Doctor Who history, I asked Jon Soble to join me for this podcast.
After last week's big cliffhanger, this episode had a lot to live up to, but what a conclusion. This episode serves as an example of what happens when you have a plan and execute your narrative to tell that story well. I can't believe I've gotten here in one year of the podcast.Series 4 - Episode 13 - Journey's End.Ashley Martin joins me again this week to wrap up this colossal story ark with huge ramifications.
Here we are again, another Series finally, and this one feels like it’s going to be EPIC. When will I learn that the Doctor Light episodes will surprise me and emotionally get me right in the feels? This week we go thru Doctor Who’s take on “It’s a Wonderfull Life.” All I know is that Donna is one heck of a companion.Series 4 - Episode 11 - Turn LeftTo unravel the secrets held of this episode, I am joined by Jon Soble and his hefty tome of notes.
What a surprise this episode turned out to be. How can an episode that was written in 2009 be so relevant 11 years later? While the episode’s tone mirrors that of a classic Twilight Zone, it retains a very true to its self message of optimism at its core. It just goes to show you that Doctor Who wows you with an unexpected gut-punch of an episode just when you think the best episodes are ahead.Series 4 - Episode 10 - MidnightBecause this episode is so well written, I invited one of the best writers I know to join me for this week, and fortunately, Jamie Kern agreed to come on. Listen as we both use some “amazing” words to describe our experience with this episode.
