In today's episode we talk about Mélenchon's prime ministerial plans, his opinion of Bardella, and the far right's designation by the Interior Ministry.
Marlon gets a piece of mail from a shadowy figure from the past, and Olly goes deep on New Caledonian independence and fascists training in the woods.
Plus more polls: most people think RN will win.
And finally, a genuine apology to Édouard Philippe, we made a couple of jokes about his appearance while discussing his plans to reconstitute the center before getting egg on our face after reading that he has alopecia.
And a fact check: it was Sarkozy who raised the retirement age to 62, not Hollande. Marlon, you dunce!

France’s new Prime Minister is François Bayrou, a wiley operator who was a recidivist candidate for president until hitching his wagon closely to Emmanuel Macron in 2017. Since then he’s dreamed of the most powerful positions in the state, and now he has one of them.
Some parties on the left like the Communists, Socialists, and Greens are eschewing the anti-agreementism of more radical La France Insoumise, who are already promising to bring forward a new no-confidence vote against the Bayrou government. They say it’s just the same old product that Barnier was selling.
But the National Rally says they’re going to be vigilant, as they try to impose their line on Bayrou, who isn’t an unyielding opponent of Le Pen and her line.
Olly discusses pressure from within the Communist Party on their National Secretary Fabien Roussel, and Marlon talks about some politicians from MoDem, Bayrou’s party.

The government has fallen, and Michel Barnier is out. What comes next? Some people say presidential elections. Others say a rotating cast of soon to be defeated prime ministers, or government by decree.
Marlon goes over the scene where Barnier knew he was done, as well as the plans by France’s political forces to capitalize on the moment.
The goal? Winning in 2027 - or whenever the next election is.

With the backdrop of the American presidential election today, France’s parties are all making moves with an eye on the 2027 presidential election. Gabriel Attal is rallying the Macron wing as he takes control of the party, and the plucky Socialists want to eject what they see as the radical Mélenchon wing from the left.
The goal? Winning in 2027.

The left has passed a series of buzzy amendments over the past week, including 30 billion euros worth of new taxes on the rich, as well as a variety of initiatives that the New Popular Front campaigned on. Deputies on the right and the center aren’t even showing up to vote against the measures.
So will France be getting a redistributive budget that taxes and spends (which the right calls confiscatory) any time soon?
Don’t count on it.

Impeachment proceedings are barreling ahead, with the vote to get the LFI-led resolution out of the National Assembly’s political bureau winning. If the resolution gets to the Assembly floor, it’ll be the first time in the history of the Vth Republic that impeachment is voted on against a president.
Michel Barnier’s government is starting to take shape - and he’s got the same economic adviser as Gabriel Attal did. And Elisabeth Borne did.
Plus, a former Prime Minister’s name is circulating as the potential next Foreign Minister of France.
And even more: the Prime Minister’s office is still refusing to communicate budget planning documents to the opposition-led Finance Commission in the National Assembly. Tomorrow, their leaders promise to head to the Economy Ministry to get the documents.

Impeachment proceedings have officially been opened against Emmanuel Macron - and it looks like they’ll pass the National Assembly’s political bureau next. After that, a debate in the commission on constitutional law. The Socialist Party says they’ll vote the resolution, backed by La France Insoumise, through the Assembly’s political bureau but that they don’t support the process, which is “doomed to fail.”
Michel Barnier has pushed back the date when the budget will be presented, along with his political agenda, to October 9th. It was supposed to happen on the 1st of the month. Meanwhile, the LFI president of the Finance Commission Eric Coquerel hasn’t received all the documents he needs yet from the Economy ministry.
And in the EU, Thierry Breton resigns from a role on the EU commission.

Thierry Solère, the man who organized dinners between the National Rally and Macron’s camp, is back in the news. He reportedly, and not unpredictably, was the guy who negotiated RN’s tacit agreement with Macron to put Michel Barnier in the driving seat as Prime Minister.
And the Finance Commission president Éric Coquerel, and LFI deputy, still hasn’t received key documents from the Economy and Finance Ministry about the 2025 budget. If he doesn’t get them by the end of the day on Monday, he says he’s going to have to head over to the Prime Minister’s office to pry them out in person.

It looks like Michel Barnier's governing now - Macron's ministers are complaining that they can't even get a call with him or anybody close to him to approve their moves because...they don't have his phone number.
On the left, François Ruffin gets booed at the Fête de « L’Humanité » as he openly goes on the warpath against Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the LFI's strategy of trying to get votes from people who support the left.
It's autumn 3 years out and the presidential race is here.

Apologies for the degraded audio - the regular audio processing made my voice sound too clipped, so I've opted for the unprocessed audio. I talked too quietly into the microphone today, sore throat.
The finally, actually outgoing Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire was grilled today by the Finance Commission, who are taking the government to task for hiding just how big the deficit is.
Le Marie and the Ministry are blaming the deficit on reduced revenues - cuts are on the horizon.
Meanwhile, the man who’ll be making the cuts, France’s new Prime Minister Michel Barnier, is meeting with deputies from the presidential camp…and contemplating bringing back the Sarkozy-era Ministry of Immigration.

Michel Barnier's forming a new government as the National Assembly finally gets going again this coming Monday.
Barnier's looking for ministers from the right, the left, and the current center. There are plenty of familiar faces forecast to come back—it doesn't seem like too much will change with this government.
Meanwhile, France is fighting off a budget challenge from the European Union. If they can't get an extension, they say they'll have to make at least 110 billion euros in cuts by 2027.

A document from the Ministry of Economy and Finance reveals that France's deficit is exploding, and might require 60 billion euros worth of cuts to get it down to where the EU wants it. Macron hid the document for over a month and a half.
And Marine Le Pen reveals what she wants from the next government: a golden egg which might ensure the National Rally steamrolls the next legislative elections, which her party also hopes come as soon as possible.
Plus, another name in the rotation as a potential PM: Michel Barnier.
