This Music Day Episode features three of Robert’s “Wordless Vocal” songs. These are hybrid songs with melodies but without lyrics. This style of song can sometimes capture the meaning and mood of a song better than if there were lyrics. See for yourself. When listening to “March Of The Diplomats” close your eyes and imagine a group of Diplomats like from the United Nations walking in unison like penguins. It’s Robert’s musical image of today’s world diplomacy. “Cousins” is a simple, playful, children’s song with a repeating melody that embellishes each time around. Robert wrote the song for his grandchildren. It’s one of his most streamed songs. And “African Nights (For Chick)” is Robert’s homage to keyboard genius Chick Corea, one of his all-time favorite musicians, written with a touch of Return To Forever in mind. “March Of The Diplomats”. Bert Berns and Nat Weiss are two giants of the music industry, yet both relatively unknown to the public. Bert Berns was one of the foremost songwriters and producers of pop and rhythm and blues in the ‘60s. His hits include “Twist And Shout”, which The Beatles took to international fame, “Piece Of My Heart”, Janis Joplin’s gigantic hit, “Hang On Sloopy”, the mega-hit for The McCoys, “Cry To Me”, a hit for Solomon Burke and later for The Rolling Stones, and “Tell Him”, a great early ‘60s song for the Exciters. His producer credits include “Brown Eyed Girl”, Van Morrison’s first smash hit, "Under The Boardwalk" by The Drifters, and "Cherry Cherry" by Neil Diamond. Nat Weiss was a lawyer by training. He became the U.S. business partner of Brian Epstein, the manager of The Beatles, and was Brian’s right hand man for the band in America, including sorting out all the merchandising opportunities coming their way. Nat parlayed this relationship into one where he would suggest artists for Brian to manage, including The Cyrkle. They formed a management company together and, after Brian’s death, Nat continued the business, managing artists like James Taylor.---------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries! For more information and other episodes of the podcast click here. To subscribe to the podcast click here.To subscribe to our weekly Follow Your Dream Podcast email click here.To Rate and Review the podcast click here.“Dream With Robert”. The tag line of this podcast is “Music and Much More”. Well this is a “Much More” episode. It’s a rant by Robert about American Football - the NFL (National Football League), which is going through the post season playoffs. Robert riffs on the billionaire owners who have taken over the sport, the new stadiums that are financed by the fans through mandatory Personal Seat Licenses, secondary ticket selling on StubHub and others to the point where there are no longer home games, the takeover of football and the other major team sports by gambling, and the NFL’s inadequate settlement of the players’ class action lawsuit seeking compensation for injuries sustained in the sport including CTE. The music in this episode has graciously been provided by Gilde Flores. Jimi Hendrix is one of the most iconic figures in all of rock music and was a hero to Robert and millions of people. So when Robert recorded his debut album "Miles Behind" in 1994 he decided to include a cover of one of Jimi’s songs. He chose to reimagine a “psychedelic jazz” version of Hendrix’s classic “Fire”. It features Al Foster from Miles Davis’ band on drums plus the amazing Ada Dyer on vocals. Twenty five years later, with his band, Project Grand Slam, Robert decided to re-record “Fire” but in a different style. This new, reimagined version of the song became the band’s closing number in concert. This episode features a bit of both versions of “Fire” - the studio version from 1994, and a “live” concert version from 2018 from the “It’s Alive!” album, featuring the wonderful Ziarra Washington on vocals. Listen to the passage of time. And thank you Jimi!Spotify links - “Fire” 1994 from “Miles Behind” click here; “Fire” live in 2018 from “It’s Alive!” click here---------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries! For more information and other episodes of the podcast click here. To subscribe to the podcast click here.To subscribe to our weekly Follow Your Dream Podcast email click here.To Rate and Review the podcast click here.“Dream With Robert”. Never thought a podcast would bring a tear to my eye, but the Lee Sklar episode--and Steve Katz before that--did just that. I'm fortunate to have been there at the beginning, and to be taken back to the making of "Dr. My Eyes" and "Sometimes in Winter" were revealing and wonderful moments. Give us more, Robert!
