Benjamin Hochman is a dual threat artist. He’s a pianist and a conductor. As a pianist he debuted at 24 as a soloist with the Israel Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall conducted by Pinchas Zukerman. He’s performed with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago and Pittsburgh Symphonies, and Prague Philharmonia among others. This SPECIAL EPISODE is a tribute to RICK DAVIES, who died this past week at age 81. Rick was the founder of, and one of the two lead singer-songwriters of, Supertramp, one of the greatest bands of the rock era. In 1979 the band hit their zenith with the album “Breakfast In America”, which sold over 20 million records.Rick played keyboards and wrote several of the band’s greatest hits. His songs had a blusier, edgier sound to them than those of Roger Hodgson, the other lead songwriter, who wrote more pop oriented songs which he sang in his high tenor voice. Together, however, these two guys provided the yin and yang of Supertramp which defined the band and made them a success.Rick’s first band, called Rick’s Blues, included Gilbert O’Sullivan on the drums. In August 1969 he placed an ad in Melody Maker seeking to form a new band, and Roger Hodgson auditioned and joined. Supertramp’s first successful album was 1974’s “Crime Of The Century”. It contained “Bloody Well Right”, Rick’s first hit.  The band’s breakthrough album was “Breakfast In America”, which contained another Davies hit, “Goodbye Stranger”. Like most rock bands, however, creative differences and jealousies eventually split up Supertramp. Tim Davis is an acclaimed studio singer, producer and arranger for film, TV and recordings. To quote his Bio: “If you’ve been to a Disney theme park, played a video game, bought a pop album, seen a tv show, commercial or film in the last 20 or 30 years, you’ve probably heard Tim’s voice, or one of his vocal arrangements, delivered by some of the world’s best singers.” Six seasons of the show “Glee”, and Lady Gaga’s 2017 Super Bowl Halftime show.  He’s recently been named music producer for The People’s Choice Awards and a new feature film musical. He’s done projects with Josh Groban and Seth MacFarlane. He sings with Jane Lynch. Peter Moore is a virtuoso Irish-British trombonist. He was Born in Belfast and brought up in Manchester, England, and he was part of the world renowned Brass Band culture in the North of England.  He came to international attention in 2008 when, at aged 12, he became the youngest ever winner of BBC Young Musician of the Year. He’s performed with a number of Europe’s leading orchestras, including the BBC and the London and Lucerne Symphony orchestras. Miist is a Chinese multicultural singer with multiple Billboard hits and international awards. She’s the first Chinese artist ever to land a Top 25 Billboard Pop/AC hit. She’s written over 80 original songs in English, Mandarin and Spanish. And she only got started at age 34. She was abandoned at age 5 and was a terminal cancer survivor at age 28. She now serves as an ambassador for Teen Cancer America.Her newest endeavor is called the Smile Project. It’s a global musical collaboration centered around the single "Could You Lend Me a Smile." Vicky Chow is a celebrated Hong Kong-Canadian-American pianist. She plays contemporary classical music, which is quite different from traditional classical. She is the pianist for the Bang On A Can All Stars, a terrific ensemble. The New York Times has described her playing as “brilliant”. She has collaborated and worked with artists like Meredith Monk, Philip Glass, John Zorn, Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane Dance Company, BBC Orchestra and LA Philharmonic. She has toured in over 40 countries and performed at venues like Carnegie Hall, Disney Concert Hall and the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Morgan James is a spectacular singer, songwriter and Broadway actress. On Broadway she has appeared in shows including Motown: The Musical, Godspell, and The Addams Family. Her singing runs from Joni Mitchell to The Beatles to her own songs, and she has collaborated with the band Postmodern Jukebox. Eric Andersen is a legendary Troubadour and singer-songwriter who first came to prominence during the 1960s folk music scene in Greenwich Village and Boston. He was a central figure in that era which included Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs and Richard Fariña.Some of his famous early compositions were “Thirsty Boots,” “Violets of Dawn,” and “Close The Door Lightly When You Go”. These songs were picked up by artists like Judy Collins, the Brothers Four, the Kingston Trio, the Blues Project, Sandy Denny & Fairport Convention, and Johnny Cash.  Eric’s songs have been covered by many artists, including Bob Dylan, Ricky Nelson, Janis Ian, Peter Paul and Mary, the Grateful Dead and Mary Chapin Carpenter. He is the subject of an award-winning 2019 documentary, The Songpoet. It is a collection of songs that I wrote over the years but never released. A few of them ended up on live albums but most of them were never recorded before. The songs do share a theme. It is about love in all its forms, including love for life itself and love for the planet.  The beautiful, difficult and dark aspects of love. I’m very proud of it. In the eleven years it took to make this album I didn’t sit still. I did bring out three literary albums, around the works of Byron, Camus and Böll. They were recorded in Germany. Tony Platt is a legendary UK recording engineer. He pioneered working in reggae with Bob Marley and with Toots and the Maytals, and he worked on rock sessions with Traffic, Free, The Who, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. He worked on AC/DC’s classic albums “Highway To Hell” and “Back To Black”. Ara Dinkjian is a master of the oud, an ancient Middle Eastern fretless lute. Ara is of Armenian descent. He and his band, Night Ark, have recorded four CDs and given concerts in 24 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. His compositions have been recorded by various singers in 16 different languages. His composition “Homecoming” was performed at the closing ceremonies of the 2004 Athens Olympics.                              My featured song is “Feeling So Good”, from the album Bobby M and the Paisley Parade by my band Project Grand Slam. Ariadne Trujillo Durand is a powerhouse Cuban-born, Grammy nominated, virtuoso pianist and singer, one of the world’s leading Latin Jazz musicians. She began performing at age 14 with Cuba's top symphonic orchestras. She’s worked with Paul Simon, Paquito D’Rivera, Wynton Marsalis and Esperanza Spalding. Her vocal technique ranges from opera to jazz. This past March she released her first solo album, “Legacy”, along with a live performance at Lincoln Center with her 10 piece orchestra.My featured song is my reimagined version of “The ‘In’ Crowd”, the 1960s hit by Dobie Gray from the album East Side Sessions by my band Project Grand Slam.
