Ever considered that the key to a longer, happier life is not what you eat, how you move, or even how much sleep, but rather... your social circle? In this episode, we speak to Dr. Robert Waldinger, a Harvard professor and director of the longest study ever conducted on human happiness. As the author of The Good Life, Dr. Waldinger revealed the profound impact of relationships on health and longevity. We discuss the surprising connection between well-being and... well... connection. How does the quality of our relationships influence not only our mental health but also our physical health? It turns out that the most important health resolution you make this year is not your new diet or workout plan, but rather that weekly phone call you promised your parents.  To kickstart your exercise habit with daily episodes all of January, come join the Foodie Fam! https://www.patreon.com/FWNTT Check out our book: https://read.macmillan.com/lp/food-we-need-to-talk/ Chat with us on IG! https://www.instagram.com/foodweneedtotalk/?hl=en Be friends with Juna on IG and Tiktok! https://www.instagram.com/theofficialjuna/ https://www.tiktok.com/@junagjata
There are a few things nutrition researchers agree on: Plants are "good" for us. Processed meats are "bad." But plant-based meat alternatives...? They raise some important questions: Are plant-based meat alternatives ultra-processed foods? Are processed meats any worse than processed meat alternatives? With the rise of Impossible Meat, the Beyond Burger, and growing concerns about the climate emergency, we tackle a complicated topic: if or when meat alternatives should replace meat. With Professor Christopher Gardener from Stanford University, we get to the meat of the issue. How many times have you heard that we need to cut down on salt? But... do we actually? What does the science say about salt, our health, and who needs to worry about it? Is pink salt healthier than white salt? Is there such a thing as too low-sodium? In this episode, we chat with Dr. Robert Hunter, a nephrologist and researcher at the University of Edinburgh, to demystify the world of dietary salt. This is everything you need to know about sodium and the real challenge of reducing intake when it's hidden away in the places you least expect it. Sugar is often among the first things people ditch in the New Year, and the most common replacement? Artificial sweeteners. But what if replacing sugar with its calorie-free counterpart is actually doing more harm than good? For this episode, we speak to Dr. Jotham Suez, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Johns Hopkins University, all about artificial sweeteners. How do they work? What are the metabolic effects of artificial sweeteners vs. sugar on our bodies? How do these sugar alternatives potentially negatively affect our microbiome, blood sugar control, and even cause weight gain? Turns out artificial sweeteners might not be so sweet after all. In this episode, we talk to Margaret Moore about the emerging field of health coaching. It's exactly what it sounds like: someone coaching you through achieving your health goals, except it's much more than that. As Margaret discusses in this episode, health coaching delves into the core of who you are – your identity, the reasons behind your health goals, and what brings you fulfillment. One of the topics we cover is how identity is deeply ingrained from an early age and can play a pivotal role in shaping your beliefs, but it's also something that can be changed. Towards the end, we even have a live coaching session. I am very fortunate in that I had only one hot flash. My mother was the same way, and so was my sister.

Adding an unusual story of mine. TW: ED. In the year 2000, my restrictive eating disorder started. Because it was way before social media and "clean eating" hashtag, I was scared not of carbs, fat or sugar, but of any foods that I subjectively perceived as hard to digest. By 2003, graduating from high school, I ended up weighing 32 kg, still not having menarche, freezing all the time, having dry skin and memory problems - you name it. I ate very little - didn't count calories, but I guess hardly over 1000 kkal per day - but my meals contained disproportionate amount of fast carbs and sugar. Why? they were easy to digest! So I was both underfed and undernourished. Very sad, ruined youth. Eating disorder xan look very different depending on the individual, historical moment, economic situation and the degree of availability of information.

Loving the fresh take on talking about diet and health.. I hate the word diet and I feel the more we can focus on health and not the latest DIET... The better we will all be.. Thank you and keep it up.

I appreciate the theme of this podcast. Juna is a lively, engaging host. She is also a 0.05 percenter. I do not mean that monetarily. I mean that about her amazing gifts and talents. She is brighter, more ambitious, and more disciplined than about 99.95% of us. Why she is even legally blind but has found ways to work through it. So how are the rest of us supposed to achieve "lifestyle change"?
