Description
Food Labels Revealed will shed some light onto the sometimes mysterious and inscrutable food ingredients label , which is found on all processed food containers. What are all those chemicals in our packaged foods? Why are they there? Can they be harmful to our health? Think of this podcast as a little mini-course in food science. If you listen to all the episodes of the podcast, and who knows how many of them there will be, you will learn a great deal about the compositional and the nutritional properties of processed foods.

The programs will continue to be available online, so please share them with your acquaintances, friends, and family to continue to spread the knowledge of how many of the giant food manufacturers have hijacked the American food system and robbed many people of healthy lives.

In this second episode that reviews toxic additives that wind up in our food supply, I look at three more examples. In California, these additives were banned in 2023 as part of the California Food Safety Act since the federal government was dragging its feet. Since then, the FDA has acted on several petitions to extend the bans nationally. Other toxic additives that have not been banned are briefly reviewed to expose the extent of the problems. Most of these dangerous additives have been utilized in the American food system for many years. Many of us have been exposed to them since birth. Lastly, I make a significant announcement about the Food Labels Revealed podcast.

Throughout both modern and ancient human history harmful ingredients, intentionally or unintentionally, have wound up in commercial foods. On the intentional side, that practice is called swindling or introducing improvements to make products better. Either way, the object is to make more money. On the unintentional side, the addition of poisons to foods is accidental. In this episode, a few examples of the former are examined taken from the early 20th century.

With this episode begins the first biographical podcast series highlighting the life and times of John Harvey Kellogg, the originator of corn flakes, the first all-American cereal that changed the way people ate breakfast. But John Harvey Kellogg was more than just an inventor of new food products. He tried to radically change the way Americans viewed their personal health by getting them to look at and change their personal habits. Although trained as a traditional medical physician, Dr. Kellogg introduced alternative health treatments to his sick patients, so they could heal their bodies in a more natural way. In Part 1 of this series, the highly charismatic doctor talks about his family history and the challenging life of a pioneer family trying to make a go of it in the Western territory of Michigan in the first half of the 19th century.

Since the beginning of the FLR podcast in 2016, I have focused my attention on the ingredients of industrialized foods and also reported on the nutritional content of those foods. A great deal of time was spent on examining and critiquing ingredient and nutrition facts labels as regards health implications. Although that job could never be completed given the continual release by food companies of new products with novel food additives, I have chosen to take a break from that podcast content and pivot towards historical developments that have led to the current state of our food system. How did we get to such an unhealthy food system that most Americans rely upon today? This episode introduces the pivot which will officially begin in the following episode.

We’re talking about food labels --- one of the greatest gifts provided to the American people by their government, i.e., the Nutrition Facts Label. Join Mel as he takes a deep dive into the arcane and murky world of the Code of Federal Regulation, a realm so obscure that only an expert speaker in governese can make sense of it. He tries … he fails … but still manages to deliver some useful information about that iconic, dense, and ubiquitous food label.
