And, like so many things in life we long for, it didn't quite turn out - he shot the pier and dashed himself against the rocks of Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach, which just about killed him. Fortunately, for Hickey and for us, he survived, and continues to battle, decades into a career as one of America's foremost critical iconoclasts, a trusted, even cherished no-nonsense voice commenting on the all-too-often nonsensical worlds of art and culture. Perfect Wave brings together essays on a wide range of subjects from throughout Hickey's career, displaying his usual breadth of interest and powerful insight into what makes art work, or not, and why we care. With Hickey as our guide, we travel to Disneyland and Vegas, London and Venice. We discover the genius of Karen Carpenter and Waylon Jennings, learn why Robert Mitchum matters more than Jimmy Stewart, and see how the stillness of Antonioni speaks to us today. Never slow to judge - or to surprise us in doing so - Hickey powerfully relates his wincing disappointment in the later career of his early hero Susan Sontag, and shows us the appeal to our commonality that we've been missing in Norman Rockwell. With each essay, the doing is as important as what's done; the pleasure of listening to Dave Hickey's words lies nearly as much in spending time in his company as in being surprised to find yourself agreeing with his conclusions. Bookended by previously unpublished personal essays that offer a new glimpse into Hickey's own life - including the aforementioned slam-bang conclusion to his youthful surfing career - Perfect Wave is not a perfect book. But it's a damn good one, and a welcome addition to the Hickey canon. Cover copyright Sweet Ice Cream Photography. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

The Christmas carol is as popular now as it was when singers celebrated the birth of Edward III in 1312. But the journey it has taken is unique in music history. Here Jeremy Summerly follows that journey from medieval times to the present day. It's a story that sees the carol veer between the sacred and secular, in a tradition that has always had one foot in the pub and another in the church. The carol is an expression of seasonal joy in the coldest, hardest time of the year. However inefficient the heating system may be, the carol still generates warmth and positive nostalgia. Many favourite carols were actually written for children to sing, including "Once in Royal David's City". It famously leads off the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a service broadcast by the BBC from Kings College, Cambridge since the 1920s, commanding a worldwide audience of several million. But has it left an imbalance in the appreciation of our caroling tradition? And why do carols remain popular and familiar to so many? Illustrated with examples of carols obscure and familiar through the ages, and taking in numerous locations around Britain along the way, this is a history of the carol to bring comfort and joy. Playing was her father - Duane Allman, who would become one of the most influential and sought-after musicians of his time. Just a few short years into his remarkable career, he was killed in a motorcycle accident at the age of 24. His daughter was two years old. Galadrielle was raised in the shadow of his loss and his fame. Her mother sought solace in a bohemian life. Friends and family found it too painful to talk about Duane. Galadrielle listened intently to his music, read articles about him, steeped herself in the mythic stories, and yet the spotlight rendered him too simple and too perfect to know. She felt a strange kinship to the fans who longed for him, but she needed to know more. It took her many years to accept that his life and his legacy were hers, and when she did, she began to ask for stories - from family, fellow musicians, friends - and they began to flow. Galadrielle Allmans memoir is at once a rapturous, riveting, and intimate account of one of the greatest guitar prodigies of all time, the story of the birth of a band that redefined the American musical landscape, and a tender inquiry of a daughter searching for her father in the memories of others. Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Django Author: Michael Dregni Narrator: Christian Rummel Format: Unabridged Length: 15 hrs and 10 mins Language: English Release date: 12-17-13 Publisher: Audible Studios Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music Summary: Django Reinhardt was arguably the greatest guitarist who ever lived, an important influence on Les Paul, Charlie Christian, B.B. King, Jerry Garcia, Chet Atkins, and many others. Yet there is no major biography of Reinhardt. Now, in Django, Michael Dregni offers a definitive portrait of this great guitarist. Handsome, charismatic, childlike, and unpredictable, Reinhardt was a character out of a picaresque novel. Born in a gypsy caravan at a crossroads in Belgium, he was almost killed in a freak fire that burned half of his body and left his left hand twisted into a claw. But with this maimed left hand flying over the frets and his right hand plucking at dizzying speed, Django became Europe's most famous jazz musician, commanding exorbitant fees - and spending the money as fast as he made it. Dregni not only chronicles this remarkably colorful life - including a fascinating account of gypsy culture - but he also sheds much light on Django's musicianship. He examines his long musical partnership with violinist Stphane Grappelli - the one suave and smooth, the other sharper and more dissonant - and he traces the evolution of their novel string jazz ensemble, Quintette du Hot Club de France. Indeed, the author spotlights Django's amazing musical diversity, describing his swing-styled Nouveau Quintette, his big band Django's Music, and his later bebop ensemble, as well as his many compositions, including symphonic pieces influenced by Ravel and Debussy and his unfinished organ mass inspired by Bach. And along the way, the author offers vivid snapshots of the jazz scene in Paris - colorful portraits of Josephine Baker, Bricktop, Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, and countless others--and of Django's vagabond wanderings around France, Europe, and the United States, where he toured with Duke Ellington. Capturing the extraordinary life and times of one of the great musicians of the twentieth century, Django is a must-read portrait of a true original. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music Summary: While aware of their father's greatness, the younger Bachs were more sympathetic to new musical currents. Because of that, their own compositions generally abandoned the elaborate polyphony or interweaving of musical lines, which had been their father's guiding principle, in favor of the more emotive style of the emerging Classical period. The youngest of these three sons, Johann Christian, befriended the 9-year-old Mozart and exerted a direct influence on the young composer's musical values and, consequently, on the whole flavor of Classical-period music. As a result, the two generations of Bachs were in the forefront of musical developments for most of the 18th century. The Musically Speaking Conductor's Guides are your link to an appreciation of the greatest classical music ever performed. Let Maestro Gerard Schwarz enrich your classical music listening enjoyment by illuminating the great works of the Masters with revealing commentary and educational insight. Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Put Yer Rosary Beads Away Ma Author: Cahal Dunne Narrator: Cahal Dunne Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 59 mins Language: English Release date: 10-19-15 Publisher: Cahal Dunne Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music Summary: Cahal Dunne (ka-Hal Dunn), the ever-popular Irish songwriter, musician, and entertainer admired by his peers and audiences alike, has now added "author" to his long list of accomplishments. In his new book, he tracks the progress of a young man from Cork City: choir director, music teacher, and showband musician, to seminal Celtic rocker, Eurovision-acclaimed songwriter, and US-based solo performer since 1983. It's a salty tale of a young man struggling to make it in recessionary Ireland, and the "troubles" in Northern Ireland. It was a hell of a time to go for it, but that's exactly what he does. The musicians and girlfriends, love affairs and relationships, and broken hearts and mended hearts, are all described as only an Irishman passionate about his chosen career can do. He does this through a series of interwoven vignettes, some hilarious and some heart wrenching, but all vastly entertaining. The natural flow of his Cork brogue shines through in all his stories, as he tells about various band mates and their piccadillos, and some shady managers and agents (some decent and some not so decent.) Cahal spins wonderful yarns about the band's travels through Ireland and Europe in a beat-up old van which carried through their equipment from one booking to the next, and about their adventures and misadventures en route. Spoiler alert: there's a great tale of a Corkman's revenge on a reprehensible German club owner. Anybody who has ever played in or danced to the beat of an Irish showband has to listen to this book. Apart from that, however, it is a great listen in its own right and should appeal to anyone who likes a story of a young man's musical dreams and struggles. It's a universal tale, beautifully chronicled. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com
