Friday Night Wine Fight

We are three Melbourne girls who had nothing better to do than start a podcast while we were all Living La Vida Lockdown - and we have been in and out of lockdown ever since! So we take aim at one topic each week with a bottle or three of wine and try to make some sense of it.

A&B Edition: Misconstrued Phrases

This week the girls take aim at... Misconstrued PhrasesIn the seventh installment of the FNWF A&B Edition Bianca and Amy look at phrases and the variety of ways in which people can misconstrue them. For example, some people misconstrue a phrase by getting one or more words in the phrase wrong. Others misconstrue phrases by misunderstanding the meaning of the phrase itself. Amy kicked us off this week introducing the night's topic. She then discussed the origin story of the term basket case. Bianca was so shocked she dropped her monocle! Bianca then discussed three phrases that actually have meanings we knew nothing about. The second one was close to Bianca's heart as it is a saying used by Bianca's family for generations. It turns out the phrase was said backward however this shouldn't be an issue because they were not using the phrase as a basis for administering medical care to children right?Amy finished us off by discussing words in popular phrases that people say wrong. The message here is Google phrases you say all the time to make sure you are getting them right otherwise you look like an idiot. We say it every week however, if you have a topic you would like us to discuss, hit us up on our socials:FacebookTwitterInstagramTumblrOr email us at - fridaynightwinefight@gmail.comEpisode edited by AmySupport the show

A&B Edition: Gin Fest Recap

This week the girls take aim at... Gin FestIn the sixth instalment of the FNWF A&B edition, Bianca and Amy discuss their recent adventure to Gin Fest held in Melbourne on a sunny weekend in March.Bianca discussed the evolution of this festival in Melbourne Australia and what the festival looks like today. In 2022 the festival comprised 55 Australian and New Zealand Gin Distillers whose staff played host to gin enthusiasts like our girls. Tickets ranged from $73.72 - $182.65 AUD per person and the event was held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, colloquially known as Jeff's shed. The girls then discussed the lead-up to the event including the universe throwing everything at Amy to stop her from going. Little did the universe know that the hurdles Amy faced along the way just made her more determined to get there and drink copious amounts of gin! Bianca also had her dramas on the day which involved losing her sunglasses, forgetting her mask, making the uber driver wait so she could get her mask, disowning her sunglasses as they had betrayed her by going missing on an important drinking day, then reaffirming her love for her sunglasses when she found them in her jacket pocket.Amy then discussed the moment the girls entered the venue and the reality of 55 distillers in one place hitting her like a ton of bricks. Amy genuinely feared for their lives contemplating just how they were going to visit as many distillers as possible and still manage to be able to walk back to the train station when the event finished. Amy discussed the drinking strategies adopted,  then quickly abandoned and general shenanigans that ensued as well as highlighted some of her favourite distillers the girls came across. Bianca also discussed her favourite distillers and named all 55 distillers that were in attendance that day. If your favourite gin was at the festival let us know! For those interested, you will be able to find a list of the exhibiting distillers on our blog : https://fridaynightwinefight.blogspot.com/ .We say it every week however, if you have a topic you would like us to discuss, hit us up on our socials:FacebookTwitterInstagramTumblrOr email us at - fridaynightwinefight@gmail.comEpisode edited by AmyTheme music by Joseph McDade https://josephmcdade.com/musicSupport the show

A&B Edition: Adulting, pros and cons

This week the girls take aim at... AdultingIn the fifth installment of the FNWF A &B edition, Danni_hell joins Amy and Bianca in their discussion about the pros and cons of Adulting.Amy introduced tonight's topic and reminisced about all the time she spent as a child wishing she was an adult so then she could do whatever she wanted. Oh, how wrong she was! Amy then discussed how working as an adult is both a pro and a con. On one side you can work. In many countries, you have to be in your mid to late teens to earn money working so the ability to earn money is a pro. However, on the flip side, as an adult, it is expected that you pay your own living expenses and therefore you must work making it a con because you have no choice. Dani then discussed the access to adult money being both a pro and a con. Earning money as an adult is way better than getting given money as a kid because you get so much more right? What if you use your adult money to purchase unnecessary things? No one will stop you! Which is both a pro and a con. Bianca finished us up by explaining how the old you get the fewer "f**ks" you have to give. When we are children we have the propensity to care more about things. However, as we age our ability to care about things gets smaller and smaller. This is definitely a pro of adulting.Bianca also discussed a con of adulting being the random medical issue of the day. Why does my back hurt? Where did that bruise come from? Was that mole there yesterday? These are the things we face as adults because our bodies are slowly giving up on us. A&B Edition: Video Games with Danni_hell

This week the girls take aim at... Video GamesIn the fourth installment of the FNWF A &B edition, for a change in programming, Bianca and Amy invited Bianca's sister Dani, aka Danni_hell on Twitch, on the show to discuss the world of video games. Bianca gave us a quick history lesson in video games starting way back in the 1950s and 1960s right up to the point where Amy and Bianca started playing video games themselves. Neither of the girls is an avid gamer per se, although Bianca does like getting her nerd on every now and then. The girls then had a few questions for Dani regarding what drew her into gaming, what she loves to play, and her Twitch account. Amy was intrigued with Dani's Twitch usage and compared the running of a Twitch account to the running of a podcast. Lastly, Bianca and Dani discussed Dani's "rig" and "stats" leaving Amy distracted by something shiny as she had no idea what on earth was being discussed. A&B Edition: Easter

This week the girls take aim at... EasterIn the third installment of the FNWF A &B edition, Bianca and Amy take a closer look at the widely celebrated holiday of Easter! Amy kicked us off by explaining the origins of Easter and how her family celebrated the holiday when she was growing up.Bianca stumbled across an interesting Easter holiday tradition whilst researching this topic. An initial scan of an article Bianca unearthed thanks to Google, made her think that the humble country of Norway had a deep-rooted real crime tradition over the Easter period. Purge, anyone? On closer inspection, our Norwegian friends have a deep-rooted crime fiction tradition over the Easter holiday which involves holidays in log cabins and evenings watching or reading crime fiction. Sounds like bliss!Amy then finished us off by discussing the origins of both the Easter Bunny and the chocolate Easter egg. Amy also discussed how, as children, we never questioned the origin of either tradition even though it is quite absurd that a giant rabbit would appear in the night and leave you chocolate on a date that was ever-changing each year. A&B Edition: Am I The Asshole?

This week the girls take aim at...Am I The Asshole? In the second A & B edition of Friday Night Wine Fight, Amy and Bianca take a look at the popular Reddit thread Am I the Asshole. They then each discussed two situations on the Reddit thread.  Bianca discussed who should pick up the costs of a family vacation and if it's wrong to embarrass your sister at a family dinner (even though she started it).Amy discussed annoying co-workers and if it's wrong for a spouse to spy on their partner and other people in their own home. After much debate, it was determined in each scenario whether the author was Not The Asshole, is The Asshole or Everyone Is The Asshole. We say it every week, however, we really want to hear from our listeners. A&B Edition: Current Events

This week the girls take aim at...Current Events! In case you missed it, Sarah is taking a break so Amy and Bianca are continuing the tangent train and took aim at current events in the first episode of Friday Night Wine Fight - the A & B edition.Bianca was going to discuss the floods in Queensland and New South Wales, however since the situation is still ongoing she decided to leave it for another time. Instead, she discussed the recent tale of a Catholic Priest who mixed up his words and potentially left hundreds of churchgoers unblessed.Amy discussed the war unfolding in Ukraine giving a brief history into Ukraine's relationship with its invader, Russia. Amy went on to lighten the mood by discussing the upcoming Eurovision song contest which will take place in May. Australia recently held auditions for the contestant who will represent Australia and in true Aussie style, we made a bit of a spectacle of it.Lastly, Bianca and Amy discussed things that they had missed (or dismissed) in recent times and had a brief chat about how Kanye is not ok. Round 76 - Recast this Movie: Independence Day

This week the girls take aim at... Recasting Independence DayBianca opened the episode with a short discussion of how we came to decide to recast this particular movie. She also explained that we agreed to only recast certain characters in order to make sure this episode was not 84 years long. Then for entertainment purposes, she decided to use a random Disney character generator to assist her in her recasting assignment. Results did not disappoint!Amy also decided to take a different spin and changed the genders of the main characters we agreed to recast in the team meeting.   It turns out the genders of the main characters really do not play an important part in the movie! Sarah decided to ignore the brief on which characters to recast and recast the characters she wanted to discuss. Except of course Jeff Goldblum. In Sarah's mind (and heart) one simply does not recast Jeff Goldblum in any circumstances. We say it every week, however, we really want to hear from our listeners. Round 75 - Fake News!

This week the girls take aim at Fake News!...Amy introduces the topic by discussing how fake news has become so prevalent in our society that many people don't believe something is happening unless they see it for themselves. Amy then discusses the alleged kidnapping of Chloe Ayling in 2017.  Sarah decided she was not done talking about history after last week's episode and discusses fake news throughout history.  Bianca finished up the episode by chatting about fake celebrity death announcements that have occurred. The girls were quite shocked by how many times some celebrities have been reported dead in the press only to announce that they were, in fact, still alive.  FacebookTwitterInstagramTumblrOr email us at - fridaynightwinefight@gmail.comHead on over to the blog: https://fridaynightwinefight.blogspot.com/ for accompanying content.Episode edited by AmyTheme music by Joseph McDade https://josephmcdade.com/musicSupport the show

Round 74 - World History: 1700s Europe

This week the girls take aim at...World History- 1700s EuropeSarah opens this week's topic with the confession that she did not think this week's topic through very well and had trouble settling on a subject. In the end, she found a subject that she found entertaining. Stupid death of the 1700s.   Amy misread the week's topic and instead of the 1700s, she did the 17th century. With no time to redo her topic selection Amy apologized and jumped into her segment of fun and a little disturbing, events from the 17th Century.   Bianca last but not least and quite drunk, ends us with Sweden's 1700s coffee laws and how the consumption of coffee could result in you losing all your cups. Turns out coffee became the subject of Sweden's unofficial first clinical trial and killed off the tradition of breakfast beers. Bianca then explained some fashion trends of the era. This week the girls take aim at... Musicals From Our Childhood...Bianca opened the episode with what is a musical film and reeled off a few from our childhood, being the decades of the '80s and '90s. Then she openly and unabashedly declared Grease 2 is better than Grease 1.Sarah is a massive musical film lover and shared a few of her favorites; Singing the Rain, Kiss Me Kate, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, and GIGI.Amy finished us all off with her most favorite musical film (because she forgot about Blues Brothers and Annie), the Disney classic Mary Poppins.  We say it every week, however, we really want to hear from our listeners. Round 72 - Fact or Crap

This week the girls take aim at Fact or Crap...Amy kicked off tonight's show which is a game show like quiz. The rules are simple, each co-host takes turns in asking the other co-hosts if something she has just said is either Fact or Crap. Since Amy introduced the topic she decided that they would not keep score unless, of course, she won the game. Let's just say shenanigans quickly ensued and there was some creative scorekeeping by Bianca. The co-host who was victorious will be revealed to those who listen to the episode. Round 71 - OMG! I'm So Dumb

The week the girls take aim at... OMG! I'm So DumbSarah jumps straight into the night's topic by having her own OMG, I'm so dumb moment confessing that despite knowing she's dumb she couldn't think of a specific story to demonstrate the fact. Amy and Bianca came to her rescue and recounted many stories where Sarah was not at her brightest. Amy was the meat in the sandwich this week and discussed the time she went and got a tattoo. After showing it to her parents her father asked a reasonable, parent-style question. Amy's answer is a great example of how she is often "the most smartest". Bianca finishes us off by recounting a moment when she was out with friends and realised she was the dumbest person in the group. The saving grace was the friends she was with at the time were all quite intelligent so Bianca calls it her "Penny" moment after the character from the TV series Big Bang. We say it every week, however, we really want to hear from our listeners. This week the girls take aim at... True Crimes: random tales...Bianca opened the episode with links to a website that she discovered on Tiktok! The website is called Mapping the missing. Then Bianca eagerly got into her segment; The Great Butter Heist (Thank you to our biggest Canadian fan for the topic).Sarah discussed the fate of the Gruber family. The Grubers resided in Germany during the 1920s and were murdered rather mysteriously. Amy finished us all off with the very condensed (seriously there are so many moving parts to this story) timeline of Susan Powell's murder.  We say it every week, however, we really want to hear from our listeners. Round 69 - Hey Watch This Movie - the Disney + Edition

This week the girls take aim at... Movies on Disney +Amy opened tonight's topic by explaining that this week we decided to do another round of a topic we did last year called Hey Watch This Movie. The rules are simple. Each co-host picks a movie for another co-host which the viewing co-host has not seen. The viewing co-host will then report back on what she thought of the movie. This time around we decided to narrow the search to movies available on Disney +.Amy was required to review the movie Darby O'Gill and the Little People released in 1959. Much to Amy's surprise she really liked the movie, although it might have had a lot to do with a very handsome young Sean Connery who co-stars in the movie.Sarah was assigned Down Periscope and noted that it was "sufficiently funny".  The movie was released in 1996 and stars Kelsey Grammer and many well-known actors from the 90s.  Bianca finished us off by giving us a blow-by-blow of her thoughts through each part of the movie she was tasked with being Alien vs Predator. Bianca was so engrossed by the movie, many of her thoughts are not even sentences. It's like listening to her brain work. We say it every week, however, we really want to hear from our listeners. This week the girls take aim at...Fur Babies Sarah opens with bad audio that she is very sorry for and jumps right into opening the weeks topic with some of the more unusual products out there for your furry friends. These are things that you may, or may not have known existed. For example; Pet Cams or a Dog O'matic. Sarah unloaded a hatbox full of crazy to share with the girls and to get their opinions. Amy then discussed some statistics around exotic pet ownership before introducing; Hexxie the 5-meter Burmese python owned by an English family and Agee the polar bear owned by a Canadian couple. Amy then ended her segment with a couple of celebrities that own or have owned exotic pets. Bianca went in a different direction and just got drunk instead, she reminisced about her past pet birds her current pets, and her fur niece and nephew. This week the girls take aim at... Extraordinary Coincidences Bianca opened the episode by explaining what a coincidence is. After this, she threw in a fun tid bit about a coincidence theorist. Then on to the good stuff... Bianca asked "So ladies are you ready to play coincidence or conspiracy?" to which they obviously said yes.Sarah discussed coincidences involving a name on a bill of money and some terrible decisions made at sea. Amy finished us all off with some Abraham Lincoln-related coincidences and then embarrassed herself with her fantastic tale of the sun being the same size as the moon. We say it every week, however, we really want to hear from our listeners. Round 66 - Worlds Worst Decisions

This week the girls take aim at... World's Worst DecisionsAmy kicked us off tonight reminding us that sometimes poor decision-making is really only something that can be judged with the benefit of hindsight. Amy then went on to discuss two poor decisions, in her opinion, that whilst light-hearted had a pretty devastating impact on those involved. The takeaway from this segment is "own your wreckage".Sarah was the meat in the sandwich this week and discussed the time Mr John Sununu cast doubt on climate change setting the United States of America back many decades in handling the current climate crisis. Sarah finished up by telling us about the time the Scottish invaded England. Too bad there was a plague going on and all the Scottish soldiers had to bring home to their families was a few weird boils and a funky smell. Bianca concluded tonight's episode by telling us the story of what is known in history as the Great Leap Forward. This was actually three giant steps backward for the people of China who unfortunately paid the cost of a leader who didn't understand how things worked. Round 65 - Not So Christmas Movies

This week the girls take aim at... Not So Christmas MoviesSarah opens this week's topic with an explanation as to what a Not So Christmas Movie is.  These movies are also known as Christmas adjacent movies. These movies are set on or around the festive season but the storyline has little to nothing to do with the holidays and could be set at any other time of the year and the storyline would flow the same. Some examples of these types of movies are, Die Hard, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Batman Returns, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, In Bruges, and Ironman 3.Sarah then jumps into her chosen movie for the night, Gremlins. This movie was released in 1984 and has been entertaining kids and adults ever since. The storyline starts with small mutant green monsters tearing through the small town of Kingston Falls. Shenanigans ensue as a mild-mannered bank teller accidentally releases these hideous monsters after getting a new pet and violating two of three simple rules: no water (violated), no food after midnight (violated), and no bright light. It is then up to him with the help of his friends and new pet Gizmo to save the town and the people in it.Amy decided to discuss a movie that always gets a run at her house around the holidays. Lethal Weapon was released in 1987 and is set around the holiday season with many scenes of the movie featuring Christmas elements. She discovered that it is no coincidence that this Christmas action movie was set during the holiday season on purpose. Was it pivotal to the plot? No. Could the movie be set at any other time of the year without changing much to the plot? Absolutely. However, the writer of Die Hard the movie, Steven De Souza explained in an interview that the producer of both Die Hard and Lethal Weapon, Joel Silver, liked movies set at Christmas so they would be played on TV around the holidays. Bianca chose L.A. Confidential as her movie of the night and makes the argument that it should have won the 1997 best picture Oscar, instead of The Titanic. This terrific drama, based on the novel by James Ellroy, delves into police corruption and cover-ups in the LAPD in the early 1950s. It actually begins on Christmas Eve, with a violent police-station brawl, as several cops, juiced up on massively spiked eggnog, beat several Hispanic and black suspects in their cells. The headline splashed across the newspaper the next morning is “Bloody Christmas” (which happens to be the title of another movie that isn’t on this list). This leads us to the main plot: Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, and Kevin Spacey work to figure out who killed several people at a diner, including Crowe’s partner, who was involved in the Christmas Eve scandal. We say it every week however, we really want to hear from our listeners.
