Welcome to Friendly Fire, the war movie podcast that - if it accomplished nothing else - made you watch Come and See. I’m show producer Rob Schulte…here to announce that this is the end of the line for Friendly Fire. We’ve seen a lot of great movies together, and we’ve also seen USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage. But no matter what war movie we talked about, all of us who work on the show are going to miss these conversations, and we’d like to take this moment to express our gratitude to everyone who listened, supported the show, bought merchandise, and came to see the show live. If you’re a MaxFun member who supports the show, you can update your membership at maximumfun.org/manage Thanks for a few great years of podcasting. This is Friendly Fire signing off. Expend all remaining ordinance inside our perimeter.

John's intro made me tear a little as my backlog of FF episodes is getting smaller and smaller. oh, I freaking love this movie as a proud 90s kid who will never grow up.

Some disturbing foreshadowing of what would happen to John here. oh, General John Gavin was 36 in 1944, so casting Ryan O'Neal wasn't stunt casting, just miscast.

ok, I realize this pod is no more. but the James Bond connections go further. The director Guy Hamilton, directed a few Bond films, at least two with Connery. Oh, here is the most baffling. Both Carl Weathers and Richard Kiel were in Happy Gilmore, may they both rest in peace.

I've listened to this podcast religiously since it aired. and it is hilarious that it turns out John's "offensive, prickly old asshole" schtick has come crashing down around his ears. turns out his hatred of the "uncivilized mudpeople" from Palestine isn't just because he fetishizes jewish women and loves imperialism. turns out all his defenses of imperialism and nazis on this podcast wasn't a "both sides" thing done in fairness. for anyone who doesn't know, john roderick has been outed as not only a shithead of a father but also an anti semite and racist. so maybe the friendly fire gang about "both sides" stemming from Roderick getting yelled at for his comments after the Charlottesville nazi rally isn't just because some annoying libs overreacted. I think maybe his real opinions about white supremacy probably had a larger impact on that than he let on.

25:10 Fans of the books know that Jack Aubrey is the biggest slut in the Navy and has women in every port! 🤣 I think that scene was the director trying to nod to that aspect of his character. Anyway, this is one of my favorite movies and it was fun listening to the guys talk about it. ❤
