He is one of the most inspiring stories in the National Football League. Adam Thielen was an obscure college football player at Minnesota State who landed a tryout with the Minnesota Vikings. He turned that into a spot on their practice squad. He turned that into a spot on the active roster. He turned that into a starting spot, and became a regular with the Vikings from 2014 to 2022. He was a Pro Bowler twice, and signed a multi-year contract with the Carolina Panthers this offseason. He's also a great golfer. He will play in the Invited Celebrity Classic in Irving, Texas this week.
Marty Turco played 11 seasons in the National Hockey League, and in 2002-'03 he set the NHL single season record for lowest goals against average by a goalie, 1.73. He was one of the best players to ever play at the University of Michigan and its power hockey program. Turco joined the Dallas Stars in 2000 as the backup goalie, and eventually became the No. 1 man a few years later. He was an All-Star several times, a member of Team Canada for the Winter Olympics, but Turco's legacy in hockey exceeds any statistics. When you look at the sheet of ice, and see those two lines extend from the back of the goal to the boards, they are there because of Marty Turco. His ability to handle the stick and puck was such it killed offense to the point that the NHL felt it had to change the rules, and the ice, to negate his skill.
In the mid 1990s, Dr. Jeffrey Wigand was a bio chemist working for a large tobacco firm in Kentucky. He went on to become one the world's most well known whistleblowers after he revealed "inside" information that America's tobacco industry deliberately manipulated cigarettes to be more addictive. His story, and specifically the struggle to air his interview on the CBS show "60 Minutes" was the subject of the 1999 Academy Award nominated film, "The Insider," which featured Russell Crowe and Al Pacino. Wigand joins Mac to talk about that experience as well as the state of the tobacco industry, whistleblowing, and the dangers he sees from legalizing marijuana.
Sebastian Junger is one of America's top journalists, and foremost war correspondents. He is known for his best-selling book, "The Perfect Storm." He has written other best-selling books, such as "War," and produced the Academy Award nominated documentary, "Restrepo." He talks with Mac about America's pullout from Afghanistan, his new book, "Freedom," and a near-death experience that you don't want to miss.
Roman Popadiuk was born in Austria to Ukranian parents who emigrated to the United States in the 1950s. He went on to build a successful career, with a speciality in foreign service relations for the U.S. government. After the fall of the USSR, he was appointed America's first ambassador to the Ukraine. In his conversation with Mac, Popadiuk estimates why Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine, and forecasts a bad ending for Putin. Also, because it's Christmas time, Mac gives a shoutout to all of the moms and dads who bring Santa Claus to life.
He's a college dropout whose career started in mixed martial arts when there was no money, and today Freddie Poole is a working Hollywood stuntman and stunt director. Mac also explains why the latest Taylor Swift album let him down.

In what will likely be part one of a two part interview, former Dallas Cowboys player Jesse Holley talks about his life growing up in New Jersey, and the path he took to get to the NFL, and the Dallas Cowboys. The path including transporting drugs, stealing cars, and how a trip to get a cup of hot chocolate changed his life while his friends got arrested. He was a 2-sport athlete and North Carolina, and used a random chance on a reality TV show to get a shot at making the Dallas Cowboys. Also, Mac recently traveled to North Dakota and he lays out the rules to say if you have visited a state.
In the fall of 2022, Mac's older brother, David Engel, completed a childhood dream when he rode his bike across the United States. A former professor of the classics at Penn State University, David left the profession to become a financial advisor. He currently lives in Philadelphia with his wife and their two daughters. David recounts his ride, and the specifics from what he ate to where he used the bathroom over his 41-day ride. Mac also expresses his thoughts on what "washed up" means after he took in a Metallica concert.
Long time journalist Jean-Jacques Taylor covered sports, and specifically the Dallas Cowboys, for much of his 19 years at the Dallas Morning News. A graduate of Dallas Skyline high school and Ohio State University, Taylor spent the last year with Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, and his then-Jackson State Tigers football program. Deion was in the final year of his coaching tenure at JSU, and Taylor had nearly complete access to cover the team for his new book, "Coach Prime: Deion Sanders and the Making of Men." Now in his first season as the head coach at the University of Colorado, everything Deion does draws a crowd. The man is a human lightning rod, and a team that had been awful for 20 years is winning. Jacques talks to Mac about Deion, myth versus reality, and why he believes Deion will never, ever go back to the NFL. Plus, Mac fights a major issue at home: His daughter's potential homecoming dress.
Edward Egros began his career in sports journalism as a reporter in El Paso and for a long time in Dallas-Fort Worth. While doing that he immersed himself in the expanding world of statistics and analytics in sports, which created an opportunity as an expert in the new world of legalized sports gambling. He currently serves as an analyst for BetQL, as well as Bally Sports West. He's also served as an adjunct professor at his alma mater, SMU; he currently lives in the Los Angeles area, and also works as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine. On this episode he talks to Mac about the growing world of legalized sports betting, advice on the best places to "win," and how to set your fantasy football team.
Tracy Walder worked for the CIA and FBI. The author of the book, "The UnexpectedSpy," which is being explored as a potential series for Netflix, also provides expert analysis on America's intelligence community for news shows. She's a college professor as well. She talks to Mac about the differences between the CIA and FBI, how these agencies are now so politicized, and what is the next threat to the United States. Her answer is quite scary. Also, Mac shares a story about trying to hit the standard of, "Would you say it to that person's face?"
